Some polyglots, who can speak quite a few languages, may seem especially talented. Zhao Yuanren, a Chinese-American linguist (语言学家), could speak seven languages and more than 30 dialects (方言). England’s Queen Elizabeth I could speak about 10 languages. A famous Italian named Guiseppe Mezzofanti was reported to have been able to communicate in 30 to 40 languages. Polyglots are indeed amazing, but American teenager Tim Doner is living proof (证据) that anyone can try to be one.
As a child, Tim studied French and Latin at school, but he found it difficult to be interested in just words and grammar rules. When he was 13, Tim started listening to Hebrew rap music. One day, he looked up the words in a dictionary and realized he could put them together to make sentences! By then, he had fallen in love with learning languages. He started looking for people who spoke Hebrew so he could practise, and then, he decided to sign up for a summer Arabic class. One evening, just for fun, he posted a video of himself speaking Arabic and another of him speaking Hebrew. Hebrew and Arabic speakers wrote nice comments (评论) on his videos and gave him advice. Tim loved it. He could actually communicate with people! After that, Tim started looking for new languages to learn and posting more videos of himself speaking new languages, including Chinese. Tim also began to use many other methods to make learning fun.
Tim wishes everyone would learn more than one language and not just as a school subject. “Knowing a language is a lot more than knowing a couple of words out of a dictionary,” Tim says.
Languages are for communicating with people, learning about their culture, and understanding how different people think. “Open up your mind to the fact that language represents (代表) a cultural world view,” says Tim, “You can translate words easily, but you can’t quite translate meaning.” Or, as Nelson Mandela said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
4. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. Introducing the topic.
B. Comparing different languages.
C. Talking about some famous people.
D. Raising problems that will be solved later.
5. How did Tim Doner first become interested in learning languages?
A. By creating Hebrew rap music.
B. By signing up for a winter Arabic class.
C. By posting various videos of himself speaking old languages.
D. By succeeding in making sentences with words in Hebrew rap.
6. What are languages used for to Tim?
A. Opening up your mind to translating words.
B. Representing an unclear world view of culture.
C. Communicating, learning about culture, and understanding different thoughts.
D. Knowing a couple of words out of a dictionary and translating them into Chinese.
7. What can be inferred from Nelson Mandela’s words?
A. Speaking native languages can bring speakers closer.
B. The effect of going to heart can be the same as that of going to head.
C. Talking to a man in his language can be of great benefit to translating words.
D. Talking to a man in a language he understands is most helpful to communication.

As teenagers grow up, it can be easy for some to form bad habits. To prevent harmful habits from dominating a teenager’s life is necessary. They must learn to recognize bad habits early and make proper changes. To change bad habits isn’t easy, even with many tries.
According to modern psychology(心理学),we must first learn about the “habit cycle”, which works like this:Firstly, there is a “cue”, an action, event, or situation that acts as a signal to do something. Secondly, there is a “routine”, the regular action you take in response to the cue. Thirdly, there is the “reward”, the good thing or feeling we get from the routine. For example, when we feel unhappy (cue), we eat lots of unhealthy snacks (routine) which makes us feel happy (reward). The reward makes us much more likely to continue the cycle, and the bad habit of depending on unhealthy snacks is formed.
To help a positive change in our bad habits, we must first check our bad habit cycles and then try to adapt them. We can do this by applying habit cycles with our own positive ideas. For example, we could try to replace a negative routine with something more positive. So, when we feel unhappy again (cue), rather than eat snacks, we could listen to some favourite music instead (routine), which will make us feel relaxed(reward).
Besides changing bad habits,we can also use the habit cycle to create good habits. For example, when we come to a lift (cue), our normal routine is to ride it,but we could change this routine into something more positive by taking the stairs instead.
Although changing bad habits takes time, yet by showing some self-control and taking many small steps repeatedly we will build a happy and healthy life full of good habits!
8. Which word can best replace the underlined word “dominating” in paragraph 1?

A. How “habit cycle” works.
B. Why “habit cycle” should be carried out.
C. What benefits “habit cycle” can bring to us.
D. When and where “habit cycle” should be used.
10. How can we changing our bad habits?
A. By putting our own positive ideas into habit cycles.
B. By checking our bad habit cycles and getting used to them.
C. By listening to some favourite music and relaxing ourselves.
D. By replacing a positive routine with something more negatives.
11. Which is the right routine in the habit cycle when you feel stressed and want to get energetic?
A. Eating much junk food.
B. Staying up to watch football matches.
C. Playing basketball with friends.
D. Playing computer games for a long time.

D
In 1878, when Margaret Wolfe Hungerford wrote “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, she was saying that there was no fixed view on beauty. Standards of beauty change over time and cultural groups.
Traditions and fashions, like society itself change and adapt with time. So it is reasonable that our ideas of beauty change as well in 19th-century Europe, women used to wear corsets (束身衣) to achieve a body shape that is no longer considered healthy. Men would wear woolen shawls (披肩) across their shoulders. It is hard to imagine that they would be seen as attractive in the 21st century.
Nowadays culture remains a major part in determining our ideas of beauty. In some countries, young women follow slimming diets to lose extra kilos in preparation for their wedding day. In other cultures, looking thin for a husband-to-be is not what a woman desires at all—rather, looking a little overweight is considered more attractive.
With the influence of history society and culture, there are no fixed standards which can be used to judge what is beautiful. Lifelong efforts and the development of society itself depend on people seeing beauty in difference and depth. The human race would soon die out if we could only see beauty within a set of limited standards.
Physical beauty must also be closely related to an attraction to something deeper within a person. This special kind of attraction is found in a wide range of personal qualities, e.g. kindness, warmth, etc. Judging the attraction of a person’s inner beauty is much more subjective (主观的). It takes more than a quick look to admire and it is much more important than physical beauty.
Beauty, therefore, is shown in different forms. We are influenced by our culture, our biology and our time in history to notice physical beauty quickly and easily, but it is inner beauty that requires us to truly see. Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder.
12. How does the writer present his point of view in paragraph 3?
A. Listing numbers.
B. Using examples.
C. Comparing standards of beauty.
D. Using famous sayings.
13. What does the writer intend to tell us in paragraph 4?
A. People often see beauty in difference and depth.
B. Fixed standards should be made to judge beauty.
C. Human beings will die out without limited standards.
D. Many elements contribute to different standards of beauty.
14. What can we learn about physical beauty?
A. Physical beauty matters most.
B. Personal qualities determine physical beauty.
C. Physical beauty is less important than inner beauty.
D. Physical beauty has nothing to do with inner beauty
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Beauty is power.
B. Beauty is nowhere to be found.
C. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
D. Beauty can only be found in hard work.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. C 15. C

Amy and I had been best friends since primary school and spent almost every day with each other. Sometimes, other children said we were no fun because we were both very academic(学术) and liked to study, but we liked it that way. Both of us were very hard-working and always got good grades at school.
I thought we would be like this forever, however, our friendship was on the rocks recently.
One Monday, we had a surprise math quiz. I thought it was quite easy and was not worried about the results.
I must have sounded very proud of myself after the quiz, saying how easy it was and how I was sure to get a good grade. And many classmates looked at me with admiration.
The next day after class, my math teacher told me that I had the lowest grade in the class! I felt so ashamed and couldn’t believe it; I must be really stupid to fail a simple math quiz!
Afterwards, I pretended to be cheerful and greeted others with a smile as usual, but Amy sensed something was wrong.
We went to wash our hands in the girls’ washroom before lunch. She patted me on the shoulder and asked me what happened. Seeing her concerned look, I had to admit how badly I had done in the math quiz. I begged her not to tell anyone else, and couldn’t help sobbing (啜泣). She held me tightly, saying she would keep my secret, and cheered me up.
However, the next day, I noticed that my classmates were staring at me as I came into math class, when I went to sit down, I was shocked to find a piece of paper on my desk that said, “...Stupid Sarah got a D!” I was so upset that I felt like crying.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Then I began to cry, wondering who let out my secret—was it Amy? Yes, it must be her since I didn’t tell anyone else. I was so angry that I went straight to Amy and told her we weren’t going to be friends any more because she couldn’t keep her word. She was really upset and swore (发誓) that she hadn’t told anyone. I didn’t believe what she had said and began to avoid her. Several days later, another classmate Alice told me that it was another girl who let out my secret after overhearing (偷听) our talk that day.
When hearing the truth from Alice, I was shocked and couldn’t wait to find Amy to apologize. My mind quickly raced back to the happy moments when Amy and I were together. I couldn’t deny how I missed her these days when I struggled to ignore her. How I wished I hadn’t said such words to her. My heart was pounding when I approached her. “Could you forgive me, Amy?” Dropping my head, I dared not see her. A warm hand held mine and her familiar smile appeared again. With tears streaming down my face, I felt a wave of happiness flooded me. Mutual trust is the secret to lasting friendship.
