Fancy Dress High School
Many American schools don’t have a dress code(规范). Sometimes students can dress in the wildest ways you could imagine!
I noticed this during my first term as an exchange student at Macon High School in Missouri. One day, I saw all the students at my school were dressed up in strange clothing. The girls were wearing bright-colored shirts and mini-skirts. The boys were wearing old-fashioned black suits. Later my friends told me that they were dressed up in the fashion of the 1900s.
“But why?” I asked, surprised.
“Because it’s the homecoming week, a time when former(以前的) students of the school come back and meet each other again. There are parties and sports events. The school encourages us to wear 1900s clothes on Monday, pajamas(睡衣) on Tuesday, orange clothes on Wednesday, clothes inside out on Thursday, and socks that do not match on the last day! Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?”
I’d never imagined students wearing anything so crazy at school before. The next day, I plucked up(鼓起) my courage and went to school in blue pajamas. There was no embarrassment(尴尬) since everyone was in pajamas, even the teachers! It excited us when we noticed that Mr. Lewis, our American history teacher, who always has a straight face and never makes jokes, was wearing pajamas too! It made class that day such a lot of fun.
The rest of the week was also amazing. But I realized that homecoming week was not just about fun, but a chance to be creative and try out new things.

B.students forgot all about their studies and had fun
C.teachers dressed as they did every day
D.teachers paid more attention to their teaching styles
C
“I'm going to fail !"My best friend cried. She and I had this conversation almost every day while we were in high school.
The truth was that my friend never failed in any subjects. I just think that she can't accept failures because she lives her life as a perfectionist (完美主义者). What she fails to understand is that a lot of good can come from failures.
For example, failure can help build relationships. Once was cooking dinner for a friend. I was tired, and several dishes I tried to make turned out bad. I grew more and more upset until my friend told me that I shouldn't worry. She cared more about our friendship than the dishes. That day, I learned that failure doesn't always make people dislike you. In fact, after she said those words to me, I grew closer to her.
Failure can make success ever more exciting. Every few years, there would be an important test in the PE class at our school. Students had to run a mile within eight minutes. I was never good at running, so I failed every time until the third year at school. Then I began working out regularly, and yet I still failed that year. A few days later, however, the teacher gave me and some other students another chance to run and I got a pass finally! You can 't imagine how excited I was after that. I felt the memory of the success was as sweet as honey, because I had to overcome failure to reach it.
Now its clear to see that failure can teach us good lessons. It's not an end—it can be a beginning.
18.What can we learn about the author's best friend from the first two paragraphs?
A.She liked taking tests.
B.She was afraid of failures.
C.She often failed in study.
D.She knew how to be perfect.
19.What did the author finally get from a failed cooking?
A.Bad feelings. B.Worries. C.A closer friendship. D.More experience.
20.Why did the author feel excited after the running test?
A.Because she could work out regularly.
B.Because she received honey as a reward.
C.Because she got another chance to take the test.
D.Because she achieved success after many failures.
21.The author wrote this passage________.
A.to show the negative effects of failures
B.to point out her best friends fear of failures
C.to encourage the readers to face failures bravely
D.to introduce different types of failures
D
About one million years ago, the Ice Age began. The Ice Age was a long period of time in which four great glaciers (冰川) pushed southward to cover almost all the upper half of North America, and then melted away. Each glacier was a thick sheet of ice and snow that spread out from a center near what is now Hudson Bay in Canada. The winters were long, and the cool summers were too short to melt much of the ice and snow, The ever - growing sheet built up to a thickness of two miles at its center.
As all glaciers do, these great glaciers slid. They pushed down giant trees in their paths and scraped (刮, 削) the earth bare of soil. Many animals moved farther south to escape. Others stayed and were destroyed.
When winters of little snow came, the summer suns shone into the edges to the ice sheets. As the glaciers melted, rocks, soil and other things that had mixed with the ice and snow were left. New hills, lakes and rivers were formed.
The last of the great glaciers began its melting about 11000 years ago. Its melting formed the Great Lakes. These lakes are today little changed from their early sizes and shapes. The largest of the North American river systems Was also influenced by the glaciers. This is the Mississippi - Missouri - Ohio system. These rivers were miles wide a first. Through the years they settle into their present channels.
22.The main idea of this passage is ________ .

B.great glaciers covered North America many years ago

C.are a million years old D.move and slide
24.From the information in this passage we know that ________ .
A.the sliding of glaciers are usually destructive
B.all glaciers in the world move southward
C.the Mississippi - Missouri - Ohio system is larger than it was before the ice Age
D.the Great Lakes are now smaller than they were before the ice Age

故填a。

What’s more, you’d better spend half an hour reciting words every morning because vocabulary plays an important part in English learning.
