1I thught I knew a lt abut Hamlet. As a high schl student with English literature as ne f my main subjects, I have t! Shakespeare’s Hamlet is prbably the mst imprtant play by the mst imprtant writer in English. Almst everybdy knws “T be, r nt t be”, right? Having seen quite a few prductins f Hamlet and read the play many times, I was full f cnfidence—until the Peking Opera came t twn!
2Dating back t the 18th century, Peking Opera has ver tw hundred years f histry. Des this mean it’s easier than a Shakespeare play t understand? T find ut the answer, I just had t g and see The Revenge f Prince Zidan—the Peking Opera versin f Hamlet.
3Starting with an rchestra playing traditinal Chinese instruments, the pera brught a cmpletely new sund t my Western ears. At first, I thught what I heard was a vilin, but later I learnt that it was an instrument with tw strings called jinghu. Then, seeing the main characters cme n stage, I was surprised! The cstumes and masks were amazing.
The perfrmers f curse sang in Chinese, but the music, exaggerated mvements and mime helped get the meanings acrss t the audience. The vices themselves sunded really unique—sme f the female vices were s high that I was sure they culd break glass!

sing-sang-sung
And the stage was really simple: a decrated whip represented a hrse, and a screen with Chinese characters, a study. Using such techniques, the pera had transfrmed a small stage int the whle universe.
4Easily my favurite part f the shw was hw the characters mved n stage. I had never seen Prince Hamlet d a backflip befre! That was simply incredible. It was s dazzling and energetic that I wasn’t sure if the characters were perfrmers r athletes! Everyne was clapping.
5Befre experiencing The Revenge f Prince Zidan, I wasn’t sure if I wuld enjy it. But, in fact, I was n the edge f my seat! Feeling the strng emtins f lve, anger, fear and grief in the perfrmance, I culd easily recgnise the theme f Hamlet. S, if yu want t see a shw that cmbines music, singing, drama, petry and cstume design with explsive effect, The Revenge f Prince Zidan ticks all the right bxes!
