For many of us, asking for help is a difficult concept. We may feel as if we are admitting a weakness that world would not have known about, had we not asked for help.

However, people who are able to deliver well-positioned requests for help are often seen as very strong individuals. When they demonstrate the humility (谦卑) to ask for help, they earn the respect of others. People who receive a heartfelt request for help are usually honored by the request. In turn, we are strengthened by the very help that is provided.

One of my clients named Kira recently made a shift in how she was interacting with her boss. When asked to prepare presentations, she assumed that she was expected to develop the content, deliver it at the required meeting and then wait for feedback from her boss. However, Kira recognized that she had not yet made use of her boss's support. She could learn far more about creating attractive presentations by walking through a draft with her boss and obtaining feedback earlier in the process rather than at the back end. So she made the request for his support.

The outcome? Her boss was delighted to coach Kira and was enthusiastic about teaching presentation skills to her. By taking the time to work together on presentation for a number of Kira's key presentations, she benefited from her boss's thought process and thus improved her own presentations. Kira's presentations now have punch!

Some of us are uncomfortable asking for help because we believe that our request places burdens on the other person. However, we may miss an opportunity to show others how we value and respect them. People who know you and think well of you are often highly motivated to help. Furthermore, the more specific you can be about what you need from them, the easier it is for them to assist you.

    24. Which of the following may the author agree with?

    A. Weak people often need more help.

    B. Helping others is helping oneself.

    C. Well-positioned requests for help are welcomed.

    D. Asking for help means admitting weaknesses.

    25. What can we learn about Kira's request for help?

    A. It turned out rewarding.

    B. It led to her promotion.

    C. It was turned down.

    D. It benefited her boss in return.

    26. What does the underlined sentence "Kira's presentations now have punch" means?

    A. Her presentations are forceful.

    B. Her presentations are controversial.

    C. Her presentations are positive.

    D. Her presentations are motivating.

    27. What's the purpose of the passage?

    A. To illustrate how to ask for help.

    B. To call for attention to others' requests.

    C. To show the importance of mutual help.

    D. To encourage people to ask for help.

    C

Every time I feel a buzz from my smartphone, a voice comes up inside of me, "Oh, there is something for me that needs attention."

If I were to look in my brain, I'm sure I'd see a surge of dopamine (多巴胺)the pleasure-seeking chemical that drives us toward addictive substances. Now, I'm a promoter of technology, but the following story can show you exactly where it gets in the way and how we can turn it around and use it for good.

A while ago I was on a walk with my little boy and found myself checking my email and responding to a colleague. My colleague learned that I was on a walk with my son, he responded, "That is great; now get off the phone, AND BE PRESENT!"

She was right. I was on autopilot, caught in a habitual cycle of engaging with this little machine. For me, I noticed it was starting to take away from my experiences of being present with the world around me, and with my family.

This has actually become more dangerous as people are feeling forced to engage with these machines while driving not only at stop lights, but while actually driving.

If you do not have one of these little machines yet, at some points, it is highly likely that you will, so maybe this can help preempt the addictive behavior from occurring. What can we do to break this cycle once we're in it? We can actually use the machines to help us. I have begun to schedule little reminders that pop up with a link to a short video that helps me take a minute to be present.

Yes, using the technology for good. In doing this practice, we can become aware when we are on autopilot with our phones, ground to the present moment, and then choose how we want to proceed. We actually create opportunity to have more choices in our lives over what we really want to be doing. Moderation can be so difficult, but this can support us.

    28. How did the author introduce the topic of the passage?

    A. By telling a funny story.

    B. By raising an interesting question.

    C. By analyzing a problem.

    D. By describing his addiction to smartphones.

    29. Why did a colleague ask the author to be present?

    A. He was not interested in the walk.

    B. He should focus on the walk with his son.

    C. He should focus on his phone.

    D. He was absent from his work.

    30. What does the underlined word "preempt" in paragraph 6 probably means?

    A. Give up.

    B.Pick up.

    C. Promote.

    D. Prevent.

    31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?

    A. Use the Smartphone Wisely

    B. Live in the Present Moment

    C. Be on Autopilot with Phone

    D. Be Moderate is the Best Policy

    D

A cap and trade system is a method for managing pollution, with the end goal of reducing the overall pollution in a nation, region, or industry. Many supporters of pollution control are in favor of the concept of such systems, arguing that well-designed cap and trade systems are extremely effective, and that they make sense economically as well.

Under a cap and trade system, a government authority first sets a cap, deciding how much pollution in total will be allowed. Next, companies are issued credits, essentially licenses to pollute, based on how large they are, what industries they work in, and so forth. If a company comes in below its cap, it has extra credits that it may trade with other companies.

For companies that come in below their caps, this system is great, because they can sell their extra credits, profiting while reducing their pollution. For companies that cannot get their pollution under control, the system punishes them for their excess pollution while still bringing overall pollution rates down. In a sense, the need to purchase credits acts as a fine, encouraging companies to reduce their emissions.

By creating a cap, nations make it clear that they want to reduce overall emissions, rather than just fining companies for excessive emissions or trying to force all companies to reduce their emissions by a set percentage. Cap and trade systems allow for flexibility, which usually benefits the market. Some people view the concept as preferable to a taxation or fining system, because it is easier to administer and it results in a pollution reduction. These systems are most commonly used for carbon emissions, leading people to refer to it as carbon trading", and there is a potential for a global carbon trading market, in which more efficient nations could trade credits with other countries.

    32. What can be inferred about the cap and trade system?

    A. It can greatly promote economy in a nation.

    B. It will soon be welcomed by all companies.

    C. It is well-designed and extremely effective.

    D. It is environmentally and economically friendly.

    33. What kind of companies can trade their extra credits?

    A. Those who always have more extra credits.

    B. Those whose overall pollution is below their caps.

    C. Those who have never been fined for overall pollution.

    D. Those who help other companies reduce their pollution.

    34. What do we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. All the pollution will be reduced by the cap and trade system.

    B. Carbon trading is likely to be conducted among countries.

    C. Carbon trade is more effective than the cap and trade system.

    D. The taxation and fining system now is out of use.

    35. What is the passage mainly about?

    A. The use of credits in reducing pollution.

    B. Efficient ways to manage overall pollution.

    C. An introduction of the cap and trade system.

    D. Potential application of the cap and trade system.

It won't sound like a big surprise when I tell you that kindness plays an important role in a person's well-being. It can lead to changes like higher self-esteem (自尊心) and lower blood pressure. Even just witnessing acts of kindness can make us happier.

__36__ From giving away a cup of hot chocolate in a park to giving away a gift in the lab, those performing an act of kindness consistently underestimated how positive their receivers would feel, thinking their act was of less value than receivers considered it to be," states a study.

__37__ Yet, why is there this difference between what we think someone will feel from an act of kindness and what they do feel? Why do we underestimate the impact we have on others?

Many of us don't have a real sense of our value. It's been estimated that as many as 85 percent of people struggle with low self-esteem. __38__ This voice" tends to shift our focus inward, assessing our every move, and having bad effect on our relationships.

Unlike a conscience (良心)this inner critic doesn't motivate positive behavior. _39_ It encourages us to hold back, feeding us thoughts like, "Don't stick your neck out"; "No one wants to hear from you'"; and "You're going to make a fool of yourself."

One wonderful way to fight against our critical inner voice is through acts of being kind to others. __40__ We must also try to see ourselves through the eyes of the people we affect. The degree to which we're able to do that will help determine our own happiness along with the happiness we light up in others.

    A. However, the work doesn't stop there.

    B. People may lower the value of their own kind comments.

    C. We all carry around a critical inner voice" that tends to put us down.

    D. Instead of seeing what we have to offer, we may think of ourselves as a burden.

    E. This misunderstanding suggests that people devalue their own actions in relation to others.

    F. Instead, it turns us against ourselves, making us underestimate our beneficial effect on others.

    G. Yet, people may not truly know the impact that even the smallest of kind acts can have on another

As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier, and on Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.

In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when I was a boy it was such fun to stick your fingers through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck on your fingers.

On Dad's final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one member from each family was waiting at their mailboxes to thank him for his friendship and his years of service."Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route," he used to say, "and a story at every one." A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so she left a few buttons on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps. On cold days Dad might find one of his customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate.

A dozen years ago, when I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad's death, the mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn't the case.

As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. When my dad was around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green, and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.

While Mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank Townsend, Dad's postmaster and great friend for many years. So we all sat down at the table and began to tell stories.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Frank asked my mother, "What are we going to do about the letters this Christmas?"

I remembered Dad was busy delivering piles of letters before Christmas each year.
