Her interest grew stronger when one of her friends picked up a meteorite in 2013. Over the years, Yang walked more than 100,000 kilometers across Xinjiang and has found more than 600 meteorites with a total weight of 400 kilograms. In 2017, Yang went back to her hometown and opened the meteorite store. There she shows more than 300 of the meteorites she has found, along with things made from them. I had just delivered a memorable speech, and I was about to learn how the judges decided my performance. The audience leaned forward and a period of silence fell across the room. I felt the drum rolled in my heart.
The third-place winner was announced. The name was not mine. Then the second-place winner, still not me. At last, the moment of truth came. I was about to either enjoy the warmth of victory or regret the months’ preparation. My heart felt closer to the latter.
Losing is a part of life, and I have dealt with it on more than one occasion. However, it was an indescribable feeling to drive a 200-mile round trip, get up very early on a freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of four competitors in my group. After Lincoln lost the 1858 Illinois Senate race, he said, “I felt like the 12-year-old boy who kicked his toe. I was too big to cry and it hurt too bad to laugh.” Oh yeah, I could relate.
I had spent many hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial Speech Contest. After not placing in the first year of the contest, I really wanted to compete again. Lincoln had many failures, but he never allowed them to defeat his spirit or ambition, so I was not going to give up on a second contest! I reworked my speech for the following year, but again I did not place.
I couldn’t accept the fact that I failed twice in something that I had worked so hard on, until I thought about my hero. Never mind the lost prize money and praise—through learning stories about Lincoln, I discovered that I can fail successfully.
    24. How did the author feel after finishing his speech?
    A. Annoyed. B. Nervous. C. Confused. D. Hopeful.
    25. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
    A. He was regretful about his not being fully prepared.
    B. He felt upset for getting up early on a chilly morning.
    C. He once kicked and hurt his toe when he was 12 years old.
    D. He turned out to be the last one of his group in the contest.
    26. Which of the following can best describe the author?
    A. Tough and strong-willed. B. Determined and talented.
    C. Enthusiastic and generous. D. Hardworking and attractive.
    27. What is the main idea the author wants to convey to us?
    A. Never mind others’ judgments. B. Don’t rely too much on others.
    C. Stand up from where we tripped over. D. Learn to appreciate the highlight in life.
B 25. D 26. A 27. C

根据文章第一段“I felt the drum rolled in my heart. (我感到心跳得像打鼓) ”以及第二段“At last, the moment of truth came. I was about to either enjoy the warmth of victory or regret the months’ preparation. (最后,关键时刻来了。我要么享受胜利的温暖,要么后悔几个月的准备。)”可知,在演讲比赛结束等待结果的时候,作者非常紧张。故选B。
    【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Losing is a part of life, and I have dealt with it on more than one occasion. However, it was an indescribable feeling to drive a 200-mile round trip, get up very early on a freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of four competitors in my group. (失去是生活的一部分,我不止一次经历过。然而,开车往返200英里,在寒冷的周六早上早早起床,仍然在我们组的四名竞争者中获得第四名,这是一种难以形容的感觉。)”可推断,作者在所在小组中排名最后一位。故选D。
    【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“I had spent many hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial Speech Contest. After not placing in the first year of the contest, I really wanted to compete again. Lincoln had many failures, but he never allowed them to defeat his spirit or ambition, so I was not going to give up on a second contest! (我花了很多时间在电脑前和图书馆里为林肯两百周年演讲比赛做研究。在第一年的比赛中没有获得名次后,我真的很想再参加一次比赛。林肯失败过很多次,但他从不让失败击败他的精神和雄心,所以我不会放弃第二次比赛!)”可知,作者经历一次失败之后,仍然全力以赴参加第二次竞赛。由此可推断,作者是一名坚忍不拔,意志坚强的人。故选A。

B“Don’t rely too much on others. C“Stand up from where we tripped over. D“Learn to appreciate the highlight in life. 。故选C。
    C
Normally giving food to wild animals is not allowed, but the situation in Florida with over 1,000 manatees (海牛) dying from hunger leads officials to consider a plan to feed them. “We’ve never done such a thing with any wildlife, but the situation has become such an emergency that it has to be considered,” said Patrick Rose, the Executive Director of Save the Manatee Club. “This is a necessary but temporary measure. But I believe the impact is lasting.”
The plan will be carried out in one specific Florida location to test how it works. It will be an experiment involving lettuce, cabbage, and other greens delivered in a controlled manner. “Under no circumstances do we want people feeding manatees. It’s illegal, and remains so,” Rose said.
Manatees have long struggled to survive with humans, whose activities bring many harmful effects. Hundreds of the slow-moving animals are struck by boats every year. However, they just account for a small part of the loss of manatees. The hunger threat has led to a record of 1, 017 manatee deaths as of Nov. 19, 2021, according to state figures. That has been caused mainly by man-made pollution, which promotes growth of blue-green algae and other harmful organisms. They block light needed by seagrass, destroying the main food source for manatees.
“Actually, saving manatees is part of saving the ecosystem. If we take care, manatees will grow well. If we don’t, they won’t,” Rose said. “We’re in the most critical position.” Manatees were listed as endangered when the government started to protect them in 1967. Increased protections helped manatee numbers increase from around 1,000 to 8,000 by 2017 enough to have their position to be downgraded from “endangered” to “threatened”.
    28. What can be learned about the plan to feed manatees?
    A. It is the first of its kind. B. It is a long-term strategy.
    C. It is carried out across Florida. D. It is aimed at saving the ecosystem.
    29. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in paragraph 3?
    A. The boat accident. B. The hunger threat.
    C. The growth of blue-green algae. D. The destruction of ecosystem.
    30. Why does the author mention the figures in the last paragraph?
    A. To explain challenges faced by manatees.
    B. To prove manatees’ value in the ecosystem.
    C. To show the necessity of humans’ protections.
    D. To encourage people to feed manatees actively.
    31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Severe Consequences Caused by Human Activities
    B. Increasing Ecological Crises Threatening Manatees
    C. Manatees Suffering from Serious Starvation in Florida
    D. A Special Feeding Plan for Starving Florida Manatees
A 29. B 30. C 31. D
根据文章第一段““We’ve never done such a thing with any wildlife, but the situation has become such an emergency that it has to be considered,” said Patrick Rose, the Executive Director of Save the Manatee Club. “This is a necessary but temporary measure. But I believe the impact is lasting.”(“我们从未对任何野生动物做过这样事情,但情况已经变得如此紧急,必须加以考虑,”拯救海牛俱乐部的执行董事帕Patrick Rose说。“这是必要但暂时的措施。但我相信这种影响是持久的。”)”可知,这种计划是首次出现并实施。故选A。
根据划线词上文“Hundreds of the slow-moving animals are struck by boats every year. However, they just account for a small part of the loss of manatees. The hunger threat has led to a record of 1, 017 manatee deaths as of Nov. 19, 2021, according to state figures. (每年都有数百只行动缓慢的动物被船只撞击。然而,它们只占海牛损失的一小部分。根据该州的数据,截至2021年11月19日,饥饿威胁已导致1017头海牛死亡。) ”,可知,划线单词“that”指的是饥饿威胁。故选B。
    【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““Actually, saving manatees is part of saving the ecosystem.
根据文章第一段“Normally giving food to wild animals is not allowed, but the situation in Florida with over 1,000 manatees (海牛) dying from hunger leads officials to consider a plan to feed them. (通常情况下,给野生动物喂食是不允许的,但佛罗里达州有1000多只海牛死于饥饿,这让官员们考虑了一项喂养它们的计划。)”以及第二段“The plan will be carried out in one specific Florida location to test how it works. It will be an experiment involving lettuce, cabbage, and other greens delivered in a controlled manner. (该计划将在佛罗里达州的一个特定地点进行,以测试其工作原理。这将是一项实验,包括生菜、卷心菜和其他绿色蔬菜,以一种可控的方式运送。)”及全文可知,本文主要介绍了一项特别的喂食计划,以拯救饥饿的海牛。所以“A Special Feeding Plan for Starving Florida Manatees(饥饿的佛罗里达海牛的特殊喂养计划)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选D。
    D
With nearly a quarter of global greenhouse gas coming from all types of transportation, can we keep ourselves off gas-powered vehicles to avoid the worst effects? As more governments push for urgent action on climate change, quite a few companies are betting their future – that millions of consumers are finally ready for electricity-powered vehicles. Modern battery-powered cars are selling fast and zero- emission ( 排放) planes are coming. These changes, both leading to a more sustainable future, are reinventing how we get from here to there.
Cars and trucks are undergoing their greatest improvement since the automobile’s (汽车) existence more than a century ago. Almost overnight, the era of the electric car has arrived. Electricity has the advantage that it works without smell and with less noise. Global annual sales of electric vehicles are expected to soar from just over 3 million today to 14 million by 2025. Just a month after Ford unveiled an electric version of the popular F-150, customers had reserved more than 100,000 of them. The price is about $10,000 above the gas-powered one, but Ford says the electric model will cost much less to maintain. Everything creating a green revolution on the ground is of limited help in the sky for the time being.
High-storage batteries are useless at present when it comes to the technological challenge of launching a few hundred people into the sky and carrying them thousands of miles. No battery yet invented can power, say, a Boeing 747 from New York to London. Promising improvements, however, do add up. Developments with zero-emission, battery-powered electric engines are already happening in commercial flight, involving trips of limited duration and distance. Airlines specializing in short journeys with small planes will lead the way to electric flight.
Our planet’s health depends on zeroing out carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, and yet, by the timetable needed to address the climate challenge, the shift away from gas-powered vehicles remains far too slow. Nevertheless, the train has left the station. Someday, electric-powered transportation will be as common as air.
    32. Why are many companies switching to electricity-powered vehicles?
    A. To reinvent the way we travel.
    B. To cut the costs of car production.
    C. To improve the quality of products.
    D. To pursue sustainable development.
    33. What do we know about the electric car?
    A. It came into use a century ago.
    B. It enjoys increasing popularity.
    C. It sells better than the traditional one.
    D. It costs less than the gas-powered one.
    34. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
    A. To show the disadvantages of battery power.
    B. To emphasize the significance of short flights.
    C. To stress the future prospects of electric planes.
    D. To state the developments of commercial flight.
    35. What does the author mean by saying “the train has left the station”?
    A. Train transportation has improved.
    B. Green transportation is on its way.
    C. The electric train is running regularly.
    D. The gas-powered train has become the past.
D 33. B 34. C 35. B

根据文章第一段关键句“As more governments push for urgent action on climate change, quite a few companies are betting their future – that millions of consumers are finally ready for electricity-powered vehicles. Modern battery-powered cars are selling fast and zero- emission planes are coming. These changes, both leading to a more sustainable future, are reinventing how we get from here to there.”(随着越来越多的政府推动对气候变化采取紧急行动,相当多的公司押注他们的未来——数百万消费者终于准备好使用电动汽车了。
根据文章第二段关键句“Almost overnight, the era of the electric car has arrived.”(几乎一夜之间,电动汽车的时代已经到来。)及“Global annual sales of electric vehicles are expected to soar from just over 3 million today to 14 million by 2025. Just a month after Ford unveiled an electric version of the popular F-150, customers had reserved more than 100,000 of them.”(预计到2025年,全球电动汽车的年销量将从目前的300多万辆飙升至1400万辆。
根据文章第三段关键句“High-storage batteries are useless at present when it comes to the technological challenge of launching a few hundred people into the sky and carrying them thousands of miles.”(目前,高容量电池在将数百人发射到天空并携带他们飞行数千英里的技术挑战方面毫无用处。)及“Promising improvements, however, do add up.”(然而,有希望的改进确实增加了。)
根据文章最后一段关键句“Our planet’s health depends on zeroing out carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, and yet, by the timetable needed to address the climate challenge, the shift away from gas-powered vehicles remains far too slow.”(我们星球的健康取决于到2050年消除二氧化碳排放,然而,按照应对气候挑战所需的时间表,从汽油驱动的汽车转向天然气驱动的速度仍然太慢。)及“Nevertheless, the train has left the station. Someday, electric-powered transportation will be as common as air.”(然而,火车已经离开了车站。
Your alarm goes off on the first day of January. You force yourself out of bed and steadily walk toward the bathroom, where you catch sight of a pale-faced, sleepy-eyed “monster” in the mirror. ____36____ However, after a moment, you think. “Wait, it’s okay because today is New Year’s Day, time to get back in shape!”
For many people, the start of a new year signals the end of a period of overindulgence (放纵). During December, it is often justified by the planning of New Year’s resolutions to turn oneself into a fit and healthy human being. However, the fact is that around 80% of New Year’s resolutions are abandoned before February. Regarding why this happens, the answer is likely related to self-discipline. ____37____ But actually we are not making ourselves any more disciplined.
____38____ One idea is to think small rather than big. Many people’s plans involve extreme measures, while in reality, change is likely easier in smaller steps, which allows for greater success. ____39____ 30 minutes of TV time for two hours at the gym can be rewarding in motivating someone to work out every day.
Finally, set concrete goals. ____40____ For example, “I’m going to go running every day to train for a half-marathon in April” would be far more powerful than “I’m going to get in better shape this year”. Most importantly, remember that despite their names, New Year’s resolutions should be for life. Change takes time and effort, but with suitable strategies, there is no reason why you cannot stick to your resolutions permanently... or at least until June.
    A. Suddenly you seem to be on cloud nine.
    B. Almost instantly, you step back in horror.
    C. So, how can you make yourself more disciplined?
    D. We typically tend to make some unrealistic resolutions.
    E. We may have good intentions when making resolutions.
    F. Instead of making a vague resolution, make a specific one.
    G. Another helpful strategy is to design a personal reward system.
B 37. E 38. C 39. G 40. F
根据上文“You force yourself out of bed and steadily walk toward the bathroom, where you catch sight of a pale-faced, sleepy-eyed “monster” in the mirror.(你强迫自己下了床,慢慢地走向浴室,在那里你在镜子里看到了一个脸色苍白、睡眼惺忪的“怪物”。)”可知,此刻的自己状态极差;再根据下文“However, after a moment, you think., “Wait, it’s okay because today is New Year’s Day, time to get back in shape!”(然而,过了一会儿,你觉得,“等等,没关系,因为今天是元旦,是时候恢复身材了!”)” B“Almost instantly, you step back in horror. (你几乎立刻惊恐地退了回去。)”中的“in horror”相对应。故选B。
    37题详解】
根据上文“During December, it is often justified by the planning of New Year’s resolutions to turn oneself into a fit and healthy human being. However, the fact is that around 80% of New Year’s resolutions are abandoned before February. Regarding why this happens, the answer is likely related to self-discipline.(在12月,人们通常会制定新年计划,把自己变成一个健康的人。然而,事实上,大约80%的新年决心在2月份之前就被放弃了。至于为什么会发生这种情况,答案可能与自律有关。)”可知,人们会制定很好的新年计划,但是却不能坚持下去。选项E“We may have good intentions when making resolutions .(我们在下决心的时候可能有好的意图。)”
根据下文“One idea is to think small rather than big. Many people’s plans involve extreme measures, while in reality, change is likely easier in smaller steps, which allows for greater success.(一个想法是小计划而不是大计划。许多人的计划涉及极端的措施,而在现实中,改变可能更容易在更小的步骤,这允许更大的成功。)”和“30 minutes of TV time for two hours at the gym can be rewarding in motivating someone to work out every day. (30分钟的电视时间在健身房两个小时可以激励某人每天锻炼。)”可知,下文主要讲述的是如何让自己坚持自己的计划。选项C“So, how can you make yourself more disciplined?(那么,怎样才能让自己更自律呢?)”
本段一共介绍了两种方法,方法一为“One idea is to think small rather than big. (一个想法是小计划而不是大计划。)”;选项G“Another helpful strategy is to design a personal reward system. (另一个有用的策略是设计一个个人奖励系统。)”则是第二种方法,其内容与下文“30 minutes of TV time for two hours at the gym can be rewarding in motivating someone to work out every day.( 30分钟的电视时间在健身房两个小时可以激励某人每天锻炼。)”
而下文“For example, “I’m going to go running every day to train for a half-marathon in April” would be far more powerful than “I’m going to get in better shape this year”. (例如,“我打算每天跑步,为4月份的半程马拉松训练”会比“我今年要保持更好的身材”更有说服力。)”也是举例说明具体的目标更有说服力。选项F“Instead of making a vague resolution, make a specific one.(与其制定一个模糊的计划,不如制定一个具体的计划。)”

Dario and his mother loved their new apartment. In fact, the moment they stepped into that apartment, they had fallen in love with it — the light was so cosy, and the windows were so clear. More importantly, compared with the previous one back in New York, the living room here was large enough for their piano! That night, the two of them sat side by side at the piano. They played jazz music to celebrate their new home. The loud music filled the room. No matter how painful the past experience was, they had left it behind and opened a new chapter for their life here. The mother and son were so absorbed in playing one piece after another that they totally forgot how late it was.
The next morning, however, their happiness disappeared. Someone had left a note under their door during the night. One of their neighbors had written to complain about the sound of the piano. Dario’s mother asked the building manager if he knew anything about it. But he said that they were all nice people and he couldn’t imagine any of them had done that. They did not intend to make neighborhood relations rigid. Neither did they want the piano to become a decoration.
Later that morning, Dario suggested that they write a letter to their neighbors and apologize for their playing.
“Maybe we could go and visit everyone in person,” his mother said.
But the time-consuming and troublesome idea was quickly denied. Suddenly, a flash of inspiration went across Dario’s mind. Nothing could serve as a bridge to remove the distance between them and their new neighbors better than a party. They both loved the fantastic idea. Over the next few days, they sent out invitations and prepared desserts for their guests. They decorated the apartment with streamers and party lights. A smile of expectation could be seen on their faces as they held a strong belief that it would be a perfect beginning of their new life in the new neighborhood.
Finally, the day of the party arrived. Some guests brought presents. Others brought flowers. Some even brought desserts to share.

One possible version:
One neighbour, Mrs. Gilbert, presented Dario’s mother with an old but well-preserved book of piano music by Chopin. At the sight of this special gift, Dario and his mother seemed to figure out who the writer of the note was. “I heard you playing the other night,” she said. “The sounds woke me out of bed. I worried that you might play like this every night. So I wrote a short note. I hope you don’t think I disliked the playing.” Dario’s mother smiled at Mrs. Gilbert. She thought maybe they truly owed her a sincere apology. And she explained that they hadn’t realized how late it was when playing. “Maybe we should play some quieter music at night,” Dario’s mother said in an apologetic tone.
“You play, you play!” Mrs. Gilbert said. “I like what you play! Just not so loud at night.” “Welcome to our beautiful neighborhood.” Mrs. Gilbert considered the book as a welcome gift, “wish you a better life!” “These songs are beautiful music. And we won’t play so loud or late!” Dario said excitedly. Everyone smiled happily this time. He was already looking forward to practicing the new music. More than that, he was happy to see the big smile on his mother’s face. It gave him a feeling of warmth and made him feel that they were home at last. Soon a soothing and soft piano music flowed and lingered the house. Everyone present was immersed in it.
