I was born in Karachi, Pakistan. After completing my bachelor's degree in MBBS, I got a scholarship in 2016 from China Scholarship Council to do a master’s in Neurosurgery at Southeast University Nanjing, China. I couldn’t wait to start my postgraduate study in China. In my first year, I learned the Chinese language, and passed the HSK level 5. It helped me a lot as a volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic (流 行病).
In February 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic was on peak, the school chose me as a volunteer, which was a great honor for me. It was challenging to decide whether I should stay here or go back home because my family forced me to return home. At that time, I thought I must stand out in this critical moment so I was handed a lot of responsibilities related to the students’ daily needs.
Every day, I had to take an order from students for their dinners and brought food for them. Besides, I had to record their temperatures three times a day, for which the universities had given a thermometer (温度 计) to them all. Sometimes if a student felt sick, it was my responsibility to accompany him to the hospital. Also, I had to go to the supermarket to bring groceries for them, for which I had to ask every individual the daily necessities they needed. I provided psychological assistance, emotional comfort, and advice to them. As the pandemic was getting better, I must stay at the dormitory gate to ensure that the students were wearing masks, having the permission cards to go out, and request them to come back on time.
It has sharpened my skills in becoming a better defender and developed a sense of pride in contributing to community.

27. What message does the author convey in the text?
A. Two heads are better than one. B. It’s easier said than done.

Public libraries are an excellent resource for research, literacy (读写能力) education, and reading-centered events. Most towns have one or share library services with other towns through a mobile library, and the use of a public library is free to people who are willing to apply for a library card.
There are several primary sources of library funding, starting with national funds which are distributed to states or provinces. These regions send the funds on to public libraries. Local governments also play an important role in providing funding for libraries, and most librarians apply for grants (拨款). Finally, private donations help to maintain libraries — most libraries have an association of Friends of the Library which organizes fund-raising sales and pays annual dues to help maintain the library.
Grants and private donations can also be used to provide a large amount of funding for public libraries, and some large libraries maintain a separate staff member to increase the amount of funding that they can obtain through these sources. Grants include technology grants which allow libraries to install and upgrade computer systems, grants which focus on a particular topic such as science, fiction, children’s books, or local history, and education grants which support locally-based community efforts such as after-school reading programs. Many private donors are pleased to support their local public libraries by donating funds or including some library in their wills, and libraries reward their donors with treats like after-hours visits or privileged access to special collections.
By combining multiple resources, creative librarians can keep their libraries useful, informative, and fun for browsers. When it comes to supporting public libraries, every little bit counts: if you cannot afford to donate to a local library, think about volunteering time to help shelve books, lead after-school programs, or organize fund-raisers. Being active with your public library is a very important way to contribute to your local community.

The ruins of a huge Maya city have been discovered in Guatemala with the help of the remote sensing technique LiDAR, according to the National Geographic on Thursday.
This breakthrough was possible thanks to LiDAR sensors, which can survey landscapes in 3D by reflecting laser pulses off the ground from unmanned air vehicles and others. LiDAR is exceptionally useful for detecting archaeological sites, as it gets through jungles and other features that hold up exploration on the ground. The technique has been the activator (催化剂) of many discoveries in recent years. For instance, major finds at Angkor, Cambodia and Caracol, Belize can explain what it did.
This large lost city envelops sites like Tikal, Holmul, and Witzna — known for their temples and pyramids — but shows that these famous heritage areas are the tip of the iceberg of this lost urban network.
Hidden under the jungles of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, more than 60,000 human-made features — homes, canals, highways, some of which can even reach the modernized standard — have been identified by an international cooperation of researchers headed by the PACUNAM Foundation, a Maya cultural and natural heritage organization. Those have experts rethinking the outlines and complexity of the Maya empire.
These ancient people obviously established these imaginative cultures based on their known relics, but the new research has shown that the scale of this lost society is far beyond what experts had imagined. The findings will be explored in an hour-long documentary called Lost Treasures of the Maya Snake Kings, premiering (首映) Tuesday, February 6 on the National Geographic Channel.
“There are entire cities we didn’t know about now showing up in the survey data,” said Francisco Belli, one of the lead archaeologists on the project. “There are 20,000 square kilometres more to be explored and there are going to be hundreds of cities there that we don’t know about, and we will push the frontiers,” he added.
32. What can we know about LiDAR?
A. It’s a breakthrough in archeology. B. It’s major equipment in air forces.
C. It was first used in discovering a Maya city. D. It’s a remote sensing technique using laser pulses.
33. What does the underlined word “Those” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The jungles of the Reserve. B. The outlines of the Maya empire.
C. The researchers of the organization. D. The man-made projects of the Reserve.
34. Which of the following words can best describe the Maya empire?
A. Famous and dangerous. B. Vast and highly developed.
C. Mountainous and aggressive. D. Enormous and traditional.
35. What do archaeologists hope to do next?
A. Restudy the history of Maya. B. Use the LiDAR sensors as usual.
C. Continue to explore the unknown. D. Study the documentary more carefully.

During the recent COVID-19 breakout, grown-ups themselves are surely having a hard time maintaining social distancing, let alone making sure their “little ones” are also safe.
___36___ So, how can parents let children understand what social distancing means and how important it is? Here are some tips that might turn out helpful.
• Read educational children’s books to your little ones. This is a great way to introduce the topic to young ones without making it seem too serious. ___37___You can remind your kids that social distancing is similar to standing back when an ambulance or fire truck goes by.
• ___38___Tell your young children that they’re superheroes and that they can “save” the world by keeping their distance from the people around them. To make the game more appealing, offer points and rewards for your child’s actions. For instance, you can give your kid a “point” for sneezing into their elbow, or running to avoid someone on the street.
• Encourage younger kids by turning face masks into something fun. You can purchase fun-looking cloth masks that your kids will really enjoy wearing. This can help your children really look forward to staying safe when they go outside. ___39___
• Explain social distancing in more details to older kids. Chances are that your grade school children won’t be as interested in games and stories that explain the basics of social distancing. ___40___You can say something like: “COVID-19 is kind of like a cold, and it spreads really easily from person to person. When we stand apart from other people and keep our distance, we lower the risk of getting sick, as well as spreading the virus to anyone else.”
A. Older kids can understand you better.
B. Connect social distancing to your kids’ dreams.
C. Turn social distancing into a game for really little kids.
D. For instance, you can get a mask with a dinosaur design.
E. Teenagers would love to watch some educational videos.
F. Remember to explain with the things they are already familiar with.
G. Most parents complain that their children don’t pay much attention to it.

第二节 (共10小题; 每小题1.5分, 满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Rainbows are often seen 56 signs of hope. And we are likely to see more of them due to global
warming, according to a new study in the journal Global Environmental Change.
The research team 57 (gather) 121,558 rainbow pictures from the Internet taken between 2004
and 2019 and then used the photos to form a database which made it possible for the researchers 58
(learn) the patterns of how rainbows occur.
Rainbows, only appear with a 59 (suit) angled position of the sun, rainfall, and fewer clouds.
Due to the emission of greenhouse gases, there will be more rainfall and fewer clouds, 60 (lead) to
more rainbows in the future.
The team also predicted that global rainbow 61 (occur) might increase by 4 to 5 percent by
2100. However, some places in the world may witness fewer rainbows. For example, the climate in tropical areas in Africa and South America may be 62 (dry) with less rainfall.
The researchers also called on more studies about 63 people’s lives can be affected apart from
the changes we are already familiar with. “ 64 (shift) in intangible (无形的) parts of our
environment — such as sound and light — are part of these changes and deserve more attention from researchers,” 65 lead author of the study Kimberly Carlson said to Science X Network.

It was a privilege for Eloise to have her grandson Josh living with her while he was attending college away from home. Eloise had struggled to keep herself busy since her husband’s death three years ago. But having Josh around was motivation for Eloise to stay active. Now most of her days were spent baking bread and cookies or with friends and neighbors.
When Eloise returned from a get-together with her friends one evening, Josh pointed to a black-and-white picture lying on the table, and said, “Hi, Grandma. 1 found this in my closet. Is that you and Granddad?” Eloise looked at the picture and laughed quietly. “Oh, that was a long time ago. I must have overlooked it when I was cleaning to make room for your things.”
“That’s your granddad and me before we were married. We met at a party. I loved to dance, and he was a good dancer,” Eloise smiled, enjoying the memories that came flooding back.
“After we got married, we rarely had time to go dancing. But every once in a while, after the children went to bed, we’d pull out the record player and dance in the backyard under the stars.”
Leaning back in his chair, Josh appeared to be enjoying the story. “Wow, Granddad was quite a romantic guy!”
“Yeah. He was very romantic. I still miss him dearly.” Eloise shook her head, attempting to get rid of the lonely feeling that was beginning to form. “Well, it’s getting late now. Let’s get some sleep.” “I’ve really enjoyed hearing the story about you and Granddad,” Josh hugged his grandma. Then he went back to his room.
Two hours ago, Mom called to tell him that the next day would be Grandma’s birthday. He eagerly wanted to give a special present to Grandma, but he was short of money. After hearing Grandma’s words and knowing their story, he got a brilliant idea in his mind.

读后续写参考范文:
The next morning, Josh started to prepare his “present from the past” secretly. Picturing the scene where Granddad and Grandma once spent time together under the stars in his mind, Josh got down to carrying out his plans in the backyard. To his great delight, he managed to borrow several paper lanterns and an old record player from neighbors. Songs to Grandma’s taste and a vase of wild flowers were also prepared. With everything ready, all he had to do was wait for the starry night to come.
After finishing dinner that night, Josh invited and led his grandma to the backyard. Eloise was astonished at what came into view — paper lanterns glowing against the sky, an old-fashioned record player and a vase of beautiful flowers. Her thoughts flew back to the past days when her husband was alive. Hearing Josh’s “Happy Birthday, Grandma!”, she hugged him tightly with tears rolling around her eyes. Then Josh held out his hand and asked gently, “Would you like to dance, Eloise?” Though a little surprised, Eloise replied delightedly, “I’d love to, Josh!” What an unforgettable birthday party!

W: It’s very nice of you to say so. My mother chose it for me.
M: Your mother has really good taste.
(Text 2)
W: What time does Jack’s train arrive?
M: Well, it was supposed to arrive at five, but he called to say it was late.
W: How come?
M: The bad weather. It’s leaving at seven, so he won’t arrive until nine.
(Text 3)
M: There are a variety of animals to see here. What would you like to see first, the tigers, the monkeys or the bears?
W: Well, I prefer to see the lions. It’s almost their feeding time.
(Text 4)
W: Hi, could you lend me the bike, Tom?
M: Hi, Rose, I’d like to, but it belongs to Joan.
W: Well, in that case, I’ll borrow one from Mary.
(Text 5)
M: Shall we go to school together tomorrow?
W: I think I’ll go by myself. I have to get to school early.
M: But it’s more fun if you come with me. We can chat on the way there.
W: But we’re often late because you walk slowly. I like chatting, but we can walk home after school.
(Text 6)
M: We need to decide what to get as a present for Ann at the end of our course.
W: Yes, she is such a great teacher. How about chocolates?
M: That’s not exciting. We could get something to wear, like a scarf.
W: She seems to have lots of those already. What about flowers?
M: But she told us she had a garden full of them! Let’s go with your first idea and buy her the largest box possible.
W: Great! Let’s do it now.
(Text 7)
M: I like your shoes, Sara.
W: Thanks. Mum took me shopping at the weekend. They’re great, aren’t they? They’re quite cheap, too. We only paid £ 15.5 for them. They were £ 27.5 before.
M: That's really good. I’ll get one pair for my sister's birthday. I,ve still got £ 12 left of my pocket money and I’m sure mum will lend me some.
W: You need to hurry. There weren't many left. They're really popular.
M: I will. By the way, have you finished the math homework? I found it really hard. I have no idea how to start it.
W: I've finished. I can help you with it.
M: It's kind of you. Thanks.
(Text 8)
W: Hi, Andy! Have you been running here for a while?
M: Yeah. I come here every morning.
W: Are you trying to lose weight?
M: Not really. I love starting the day with some exercise. It gives me more energy, and I just feel calmer all day long. So, what's new with you these days, Sarah?
W: Well, I've taken up a new hobby. I'm in a school to learn yoga.
M: I've never done yoga. My doctor told me it might help one sleep better, though.
W: It certainly will. Hey, you should come to the school. The teacher gives lessons for free on Mondays and Wednesdays.
M: Free? Wow! It is Tuesday today. I can go tomorrow.
(Text 9)
M: It's too bad this living room is so small. I'd buy a sofa bed ifwe had more space.
W: I wouldn't spend money on furniture. I'd get a big-screen TV and put it in the corner!
M: Let's look at the kitchen. I think there is some yellow paint in our old house. I'll paint the walls here.
W: Great idea. Your sister is good at handwork. What ifwe ask her to make us new curtains?
M: I hope she'll make them for free.
W: Now,… what about the bathroom? We must buy a new shower curtain and a new small carpet.
M: Look at this place. It's so dirty.
W: You're right. Maybe the bathroom would look better if we cleaned it.
(Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. My name is John. Today I want to say something mainly about my daily life. First I want to say my life has changed a lot. When I was a child, I had a lot of time to play. But now I have to study all day. I used to play baseball and basketball with my classmates, but now I just stay at home and do my homework. I seldom watch TV these days, for I’m often busy preparing for my tests. Books were my good friends. I used to read a lot of cartoon books and storybooks instead of reading textbooks all day like now. I enjoy doing homework with my friends. But parents don’t allow me to do that, because they think we will talk instead of studying. I disagree. We can learn a lot from each other. My mother is a doctor and my father is an engineer.
