Although sisters Carmencristina Moreno and Rosemary Selzer were born 14 years apart, they both have vivid memories of growing up surrounded by music.

Their dad was very fond of music and there was always music in the house. Dad composed his own songs. He would sit in the back seat of the white station wagon(旅行车)with a sheet of paper and a pencil. He would say, “Well, this is the only place I can get some peace and quiet to write.” Their father would write lyrics onto whatever paper he could find, however unconventional. “No blank cardboard was safe,” said Carmencristina.

In the 1940s, music promoters invited their dad to tour South America. Carmencristina was a young child, and Rosemary wasn’t yet born. But their dad, who was orphaned (使成孤儿) at an early age, never wanted to be away from his daughter for too long. So he refused.

When their dad had a pause in his music career, he picked up another job as a farm irrigator (农场灌溉工). He would come home with burst blisters. It must have been hard for him because he had to do what it took to feed the family.

Their father Luis died in 1974. Rosemary wondered where her dad’s music career could have gone if he hadn’t sold his music to support his family. “He composed approximately 300 songs in his lifetime, but he gave away the songs or sold them for $50 a song,” she said. “So, I could imagine that as he got older and heard his music on the radio and all of these people getting famous, it must have been painful for him.”

She asked her sister how she thought their father would want to be remembered. “Aside from being a good family man, he wanted people to know that he composed music, beautiful music,” said Carmencristina.

    1. What does the underlined part “No blank cardboard was safe” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Ordinary paper was unfit to be used.

    B. Dad composed using diverse kinds of paper.

    C. Dad preferred writing lyrics on blank cardboard.

    D. Blank cardboard was not a guarantee of a writing tool.

    2. Why did Dad give up his tour in South America?

    A. To prevent his daughters being orphaned. B. To stay with his wife for her safety.

    C. To make sure his child didn’t suffer. D. To avoid living a tough life.

    3. What do we know about the father?

    A. He had little expectation of fame. B. He tended to write songs while traveling.

    C. He went into business in the 1940s. D. He gave up a lot to support the family.

    B

The technology that connects us has revolutionized the world over the past decade, changing how people interact and in many ways changing our lives for the better. However, some say the most significant development in tech is its unexpected consequences.

Robert Scoble, the chief strategy officer at the spatial computing agency Infinite Retina, said that the “biggest change over the last decade is how technology has appeared in almost every part of our lives.” Everything from smartphones to TVs to daily items like barbecue grills has become available with the Internet connected. But with many of our devices “always on”, a certain mistrust of technology has appeared. The FBI just issued a warning about smart TVs, saying there is the potential that “TV producers and app developers may be listening in on and watching you” via an internet-connected TV.

Meanwhile, over the past decade, a new social rule has been formed that remains almost impossible to escape: If you participate in most of the online world, your activity and data will most likely be monitored and stored somewhere, by someone.

“It’s a fact of our digital life now, that everything we do online now is monitored and someone will find a way to make a profit on it,” said Santo Domingo, a reporter.

As more people become aware of not only the benefits but also the threats of new technologies, Scoble said he has noticed “there’s much resistance to new technology now”. One example is the resistance many are putting up to facial recognition technology.

Some big tech companies have started to make changes after being faced with criticism, although some critics say it’s still not enough, including lawmakers who blamed Mark Zuckerberg at a recent hearing for Facebook’s ad policy. The major tech giants like Facebook, Google and Twitter have also strengthened their security and content moderation teams in recent years and do more to cooperate with each other about threats than they did before.

    4. Why do some people refuse to accept technology?

    A. It changes their lifestyles. B. It affects their life quality.

    C. It may disturb their privacy. D. It will break with tradition.

    5. Why does the author mention Santo Domingo’s words in Paragraph 4?

    A. To show people’s attitudes to new technology. B. To further explain the side effects of technology.

    C. To encourage people to use technology smartly. D. To make a list of the limitations of technology.

    6. What can we infer about the unexpected results of technology?

    A. They have been kept in control. B. They are ignored around the world.

    C. The survival of humans is under threat. D. Some measures are being taken to avoid them.

    C

New genetically modified (转基因) apples designed by a biology company are being released this fall but won’t be labeled as GMOs (转基因生物). They’re called Arctic apples, whose genes have been changed from their original Golden Delicious state to make sure that after the fruits are cut open and exposed to the air, their flesh won’t turn brown in color.

The development company, Okanagan Specialty Fruits, says the apples may be on sale as bagged slices in up to 400 stores this season throughout the Midwest and Southern California. The fruit won’t bear the standard “produced with genetic engineering” label because of a 2016 law allowing codes to be visible on the packaging that link to a website with information on how the fruit was made.

The apples were made using a technique called gene silencing. The Okanagan team engineered the fruit’s DNA to produce less enzyme () that causes the white, inner flesh to brown so that the new and improved slices will stay fresh for up to three weeks. Although there are only about 250 acres of Arctic apple trees currently planted across the US, the team hopes GMO fruits can reduce waste and increase apple sales overall.

While some experts believe that the Arctic apple’s GMO status isn’t harmful, groups opposing GMOs have started protesting the apples. An organization called Friends of the Earth claims that they’re “understudied, unlabeled and unnecessary.” Right now, apple slices treated with calcium and vitamin C can be purchased off Amazon with the promise of not browning before they arrive on the customer’s doorstep. And, a little bit of lemon juice is an easier and more natural way to prevent cut apples from turning color for a few hours.

    7. The Arctic apples will not be labeled “GMO” because ________.

    A. actually these apples are not genetically modified food

    B. the fruit will be sold as bagged slices in up to 400 stores

    C. there is not enough space for the label on the packaging

    D. information of their apples can be checked on the Internet

    8. How do Arctic apples stay fresh according to the Okanagan team?

    A. By changing the fruit’s DNA to reduce relevant enzyme.

    B. By decreasing the percentage of engineers in the team.

    C. By treating apple slices with calcium and vitamin C.

    D. By adding a little bit of lemon juice to the slices.

    9. What is the Friends of the Earth’s attitude to Arctic apples?

    A. Disapproving. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Cautious.

    10. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. A Novel Way to Keep Arctic Apples From Turning color.

    B. Protest against Apples Entering US Markets due to the label.

    C. GM Apples That Don’t Brown to Reach US Shelves This Fall.

    D. Apples That Can Stay Free of Browning as Long as Three Months.

    47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In the first and second grades,I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn’t very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong.

So in our school’s annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded (僻静的) corner to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes.

One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, “Oh, Mary, you’re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny!” But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, “Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and 1 could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you. It’s your choice.”

My mind was spinning faster than the windmill (风车) on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role. She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, “If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon.” I looked into Mrs. Sally’s shining blue eyes and said, “Okay, I’ll try.” I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was.

In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered my lines and songs.

    注意:

    1.所续写的短文的词数应为 150 左右;

    2.至少使用 5 个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;

    3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

    4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。
