As a parent, you might never guess all the ways a good imagination benefits your child. It helps a preschooler.
Develop social skills
As children play pretend, they explore relationships between family members, friends and co-workers and learn more about how people interact. Playing doctor, they imagine how physicians care for their patients. Playing house, they learn more about how parents feel about their children. Imaginative play helps develop empathy (同情) for others. If children can imagine how it feels to be left out of a game or to lose a pet, they are better able to help those in need. They become more willing to play fair, to share, and to cooperate.
Build self-confidence
Young children have very little control over their lives. Imagining oneself as a builder of skyscrapers (摩天大楼) or a superhero defending the planet is empowering to a child. It helps them develop confidence in their abilities and their potential.
Boost intellectual growth
Using the imagination is the beginning of abstract thought. Children who can see a king’s castle in a mound (堆) of sand or a delicious dinner in a mud pie are learning to think symbolically (象征性地). This skill is important in school where a child will have to learn that numerals symbolize groups of objects, letters symbolize sounds, and so on.
Practice language skills
Kids who play pretend with their friends do a lot of talking. This helps boost their vocabulary, improve sentence structure and promote communication skills.
Work out fears
Playing pretend can help children work out their fears and worries. When children role-play about the big, bad monster under the bed, they gain a sense of control over him and he doesn’t seem quite so big or so bad. Imaginative play also helps kids vent (发泄) confusing feelings they might have, such as anger toward a parent or compete with a new sibling (兄弟姐妹).
To encourage your youngster’s imagination, read to him every day. Books offer children the opportunity to visit other worlds and create new ones of their own.
For generations children have enjoyed reading the story of Peter Pan because Peter takes them on fascinating adventures. Reader’s Digest Young Families offers a beautiful typical Disney edition of Peter Pan, which is an iParenting Media Awards winner. Click here to find out how you can get this classic story along with 2 free books-Bambi and Pinochio.
21.What’s NOT the advantage of children having a good imagination?
A.Understanding the other people’s feelings and problems
B.Expressing their feelings like anger.
C.Having a strong faith in their own abilities and potential.
D.Helping them form a good habit of reading story.
22.What does the underlined word “Boost” mean?
A.Improve.
B.Limit.
C.Push.
D.Praise.
23.What’s the purpose of writing the article?
A.To tell readers the benefits of encouraging children’s imagination.
B.To introduce some wonderful Disney stories to readers.
C.To provide ways of helping make kids more imaginative.
D.To persuade parents to buy the Disney edition of Peter Pan.

The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching, and I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt: "The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view?" I shook my head stubbornly — and felt the ache in my tooth.I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable.I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally, at about lunchtime, I got lucky.
"If you come by right now," the receptionist said, "the dentist will fit you in."
I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car.But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn’t he as busy as the others?
In the dentist’s office, I sat down and looked around.I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice-cold one.
When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, "Don’t worry. The dentist is very good."
"How long do I have to wait for him?" I asked impatiently.
"Come on, he is coming.Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork," the assistant said.
"The artwork?" I was puzzled.
The chair went back.Suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment, I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.
What a relief!

This Mother’s Day will be the 7th year I have spent without my own mother. She passed away less than a month before Mother’s Day in the year 2008. She had been ill for almost two years, and I didn’t cry when she died, or at her funeral, until that first Mother’s Day without her. On that day, I realized that this person I loved and depended on was gone forever.
She still lives in our memory, in the thoughts of her friends and co-workers, in the values she had instilled(逐渐灌输) in her children, and in the lovely flower gardens that she had so carefully tended.
She loved her gladioli(剑兰)and irises(鸢尾花). Each fall she would dig the bulbs(鳞茎) out of the soil and carefully wrap them in paper. The bulbs would be stored until the following spring when they would be replanted. It seemed like a lot of effort to me, but each year her flower garden was more glorious than the year before. She put the same hard work into caring for her
family, instilling in her children a sense of justice and fair play, compassion and strong moral values so that we blossomed.
Share stories about your mother’s life at your Mother’s Day party. Too often, we avoid speaking of those loved ones who have passed away, fearful that we will unearth sad feelings. It doesn’t have to be that way. Sharing fond memories and stories of the life we shared with her can be a healing process that binds(捆绑)the family together.
My mother passed away when her oldest grandchild was only eight years old. Children will enjoy sharing pictures and stories of their grandmother they may have never known or have little memory of. Sharing stories to pass on to the next generation will give children a feeling of family history and continuity, and it may be one of the best ways to honor our mothers and grandmothers who have gone before us.
28.On the first Mother’s Day after Mum died the author realized .
A.Mum had been dead for a long time

C.it was true that Mum had been dead
D.it was impossible to depend on Mum
29.From the third paragraph we can infer that Mum .
A.loved her gladioli and irises
B.showed kindness to all her children
C.taught the children to plant patiently
D.had a good influence on the author
30.At the Mother’s Day party people don’t mention their lost mums only because .
A.they are simply afraid of causing sad feelings
B.they have forgotten their mums completely
C.they don’t love their mums any longer
D.they think their mums have passed away
31.In order to show honor to our mothers and grandmothers we can .
A.spend Mother’s Day with our children
B.share the stories of them with the children
C.hold the Mother’s Day party every year
D.plant beautiful flowers in the family garden

A shop wholly run by a robot has been set up in downtown Tokyo, capital of Japan. The shop was set up by a Japan-based company.
When a customer comes to the shop, he will be given a pencil and a piece of paper. When he is looking at the shelves for goods, he can write down the number of each thing he wants to buy. Then he may come to a machine, which looks like a bank ATM(Automatic Teller Machine), and press the buttons to tell
the machine the numbers and some other information about the goods. The machine will soon give the customer a bill. It means that a customer can do shopping through mail or even an international computer network without facing the shop owner. The right pair of exercise shoes can do a lot to prevent discomfort and injuries, personal trainers say. Here are some shopping tips:
36 Depending on your workout, shoes designed for walking, running, tennis, cross-training or another specialty will provide the best support for your feet.
Shop when you normally exercise. Feet actually get bigger throughout the day, sometimes swelling up as much as a half-size by nighttime. 37
Try them on. Never grab a pair of exercise shoes based only on the size of footwear you normally buy. Bring the type of socks you’d wear to work out and go for a walk through the store.
38 You should be able to spread your toes out comfortably. Make sure there’s about a half-inch of space between them and the front of the shoe. The back should fit snugly (warmly and comfortably) against your heel and not move up and down. If your feet are different sizes, buy based on the larger one.
Talk to an expert. Shoe salesmen and personal trainers can study your stride (步伐) and the shape of your feet. 39
40 Many trainers recommend switching footwear every three to five months, if possible, to maintain proper cushioning and support.
One tip: if you have to tie your shoes very tightly to feel a good amount of support, they may be ready to go.
A. Think about how much you can afford to buy the workout shoes.
B. Consider your type of exercise.
C. Focus on fit.
D. So don’t shop first thing in the morning if you often work out in the evening.
E. Pay more attention to new style shoes.
F. Replace worn shoes regularly.
G. Usually they can recommend the best shoes to guard against injuries.

71.Our school has regularly rest hours for students. However, we can often see many students do their lessons or other things before bedtime. They usually stay up until midnight.
Teenagers need enough sleep daily. Stay up late may not only do harm to their health, but also make students later for class or sleepy in class. Thus, they miss everything they should have learned.
It is blameless to stay up once in while if we do have to take up our rest time for some urgent things, so don’t make it a habit. It is advised that young people had better not stay up late, that we should bear in minds. Early

M: Well, to be honest with you, I fell asleep during the lecture.
W: Was it that boring?
M: No, it wasn’t the teacher’s fault. The problem is that I can’t stay awake for a two-hour lecture. I have been working in the evening at the hospital.
W: Isn’t that going to affect your grades?
M: Probably. But I need to work to pay my school fees.
W: Maybe you should talk to the financial aid office. There’s no point in working so hard to make money if you are just going to fail your classes.
M: But they are going to try to offer me a bunch of loans. I am trying to avoid going into debt. That’s why I’ve been working!
W: OK, then I have a better idea. Why don’t you go to the student employment office and see if they can help you find another job? Even if you have to work, there’s no reason why you should work at night.
M: That’s a great idea. I actually have a break before my next class, so I’ll go there now.

【备注】Here I'll give you some advice on how to bring family members close together. Well, I feel it is very important for families to have regular meals together. Because my husband and I both work and our two children are busy with their studies, we seldom have a chance to get together as a family. But we thought it would be possible for us to sit down and enjoy meals together every week. First we tried setting three fixed days: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. But almost everyone was unhappy. Then my son had the idea that
everyone told me his or her most convenient days and I would choose the two best days. For a while, the children were still unhappy with the idea. They said they would rather spend the time with their friends playing sports. Gradually, though, they began to see these evenings together as interesting and helpful time. We loved each other a lot. We made plans for trips. We discussed each other's problems. After a couple of months, anyone who had to miss a family meal felt regretful.

71.Dear Sam,
Thank you for your concern. Now, I am writing to share with you the experiences in taking the final examination.
The exam was to begin on the morning of the 27th, January. The required subjects in the exam are Chinese, English, math, physics, chemistry and biology. In order to get satisfying grades in all subjects, I worked very hard to achieve my goal. Therefore, I had made a full preparation for it.
In spite of this, I first felt a little nervous because of some knowledge I was not familiar with. But after a deep breath, I told myself that I could make it and I was able to. After a while, everything went smooth for me. Once again, I regained my confidence, and it worked out well. So I am confident that I will get my ideal grades.
I am glad to receive your letter and thank you again for your concern. And I am expecting your experiences in the study and exam. Wish you a happy day!
Yours,
Li Xia

72.It was a sunny day last Sunday. I went fishing by a lake not far away from my home. Many parents brought their children there, playing around and having fun on the grass near the lake. A girl was running after a beautiful butterfly and trying to catch it. Her mother was looking at her with delight. Suddenly, the girl missed her step and fell into the lake. She struggled in the water and cried out for help. Her mother was shocked and terrified, not knowing what to
do. Seeing this, without hesitation, I threw away my fishing rod and dived into the water. I swam to the girl as fast as I could. Hardly had I got to her when I seized her tightly and took her to the bank. Fortunately, the girl was all right. Her mother thanked me with tears in her eyes. Though I didn't get a single fish that day, I felt proud of myself.
