Twelve years ag, Danny called me frm a dark, damp subway statin. “A baby!” he shuted. “Get dwn here,
and flag dwn a plice car r smething.” By nature, Danny is a very calm persn, s when I culd almst feel his
heartbeat thrugh the phne line, I ran.
When I gt t the subway statin, Danny was hlding a light-brwn-skinned baby, abut a day ld. The baby
had been wrapped (被包裹) in an versize black sweatshirt and left n the grund in a crner behind the gate.
What neither f us knew, r culd have assumed, was that Danny had nt just saved an abandned infant; he
    had fund ur sn.
Three mnths later, Danny appeared in family curt t tell the stry f finding the baby. Suddenly, the judge
asked, “Wuld yu be interested in adpting this baby?” The questin surprised everyne in the curtrm, except
    Danny, wh answered, simply, “Yes.”
“But I knw it’s nt that easy,” he said.
“Well, it can be,” said the judge befre giving rders t allw me t be a parent-t-be.
My first reactin, when I heard, went smething like, “Are yu crazy? Hw culd yu say yes withut asking me?
In three years as a cuple, we had never discussed adpting a child: I was an devted playwright ( 剧 作 家 )
wrking as a part-time wrd clerk. Danny was a respected yet wildly under-paid scial wrker. We had a rmmate,
wh slept in ur living rm, t help pay the rent.
We knew hw many challenges cuples usually faced when they want t have a baby. And while Danny had
    patience and selflessness, I didn’t knw hw t change a diaper ( 尿 布 ), let alne nurse a child. I didn’t trust the
scial system and was sure there wuld be difficulties. Als, I culdn’t handle parenthd. S I prmised myself I
    wuldn’t devte t it.
The caretaker held the baby and then placed him in my arms. But when the baby stared up at me, with all the
inncence and hpe he shwed t me, I, like Danny, cmpletely fell fr him.
    24. Why did Danny call the authr?
    A. Because he fund their lst sn.

    C. Because he had a heart truble.

Sil creates life frm death. The prductin f mre than 95% f the fd we eat relies n sil. But this
precius resurce is erded (侵蚀) at a glbal average f 13.5 tns per hectare per year. Instead f nurishing crps,
fertile tpsil is washed and blwn away, ending up in incnvenient places such as ditches and ceans.
J Handelsman and Kayla Chen try t make readers care abut sil in A Wrld Withut Sil. Their prlgue
( 前 言 ) takes the frm f a letter t the gvernment. With the letter, they hpe t make sil management a federal
pririty. The fllwing chapters cver the basic science f sil as well as the causes and cnsequences f its ersin.
In the last part f the bk, the authrs turn t pssible slutins—many f them simple, and sme centuries ld.
They describe abut traditinal sil management techniques, including planting diverse crps in rtatin ( 轮 种 ),
increasing rganic cntent, plughing as little as pssible, etc. With these techniques, farmers are able t prduce
rich agricultural prductin while maintaining deep banks f fertile sil.
Why, then, is fertile sil being allwed t be washed and blwn away? The answer, nt surprisingly, rests in
glbal capitalism. Farmers' prfit is thin, frcing farmers t plant the highest-prfit crp frm field t field every
seasn. T ensure fd security, Handelsman and Chen urge the wrld t demand a real tp-dwn change in hw
agricultural prductin is managed. "The burden f prtecting sil cannt be shifted t farmers and envirnmental
activists," they nte. Gvernments must begin t mve twards a mdel in which farmers are less independent
business peple grwing and selling fd, and mre gvernment-supprted land wrkers managing bth fd
prductin and sil prtectin. This shuld be the cre f agriculture.
Our land and sil are t precius t be destryed by the market price f crps. We must invest deeply and
thughtfully in ur farmers s that they can invest deeply and thughtfully in the land. This is the future f farming.
    28. What is the functin f paragraph 1?
    A. T begin a stry. B. T intrduce the tpic.
    C. T warn peple f a danger. D. T mentin a fact. 29. What are the main cntents f the bk A Wrld WithutSil?
    A. A letter t the gvernment. B. The future f farming.
    C. The basic science f sil and the causes and cnsequences f its ersin.
    D. Sme pssible slutins.
    30. What d Handelsman and Chen advise?
A .Farmers shuld invest in the mst prfitable crps.
    B. Only envirnmental activists need t take up the burden f prtecting sil.
    C. The whle wrld just needs t make a few pssible changes in the management f agricultural prductin.
    D. Farmers shuld wrk the land with the help f gvernment
    31. What’s the type f the passage?
    A. Bigraphy B. Bk review
    C. Planting guidelines D. A tale

Chinese astrnauts have successfully grwn rice seedlings( 幼 苗 )abard the Tiangng space statin and this

said n Mnday. This experiment is the first t prduce the cmplete life cycle f the plant, which begins with a seed

The breakthrugh was cnducted in the Wentian space labratry, which was launched int rbit n July 24,

“The astrnauts will keep mnitring the plants, and if it is successful, they will cllect the newly prduced seeds
and bring them back t Earth fr further studies,” she nted
The flwering stage is crucial fr plant reprductive develpment. “We want t investigate hw micrgravity
can affect the plant flwering time and whether it is pssible t use the micrgravity envirnment t cntrl the
    related prcess,” she said.
Since the 1980s, China has been taking seeds f rice and ther crps t space t help them mutate and prduce
higher yields nce they were planted n Earth. But grwing rice in rbit is a different challenge due t the tugh
cnditins f space such as micrgravity and lack f air.
Rice has been a main fd fr astrnauts since the early days f space explratin. Freeze—dried chicken and
rice was the menu fr the Apll 11 missin, which carried the first humans t land n the mn in July 1969.
“But if we want t land n and explre Mars, bringing fd frm Earth is nt enugh t prvide fr the
astrnauts’ lng jurney and missin in space. We have t find a fd surce fr lng term space explratins,”
    Zheng added.
    32. What’s the significance f Chinese recent space rice experiment?
    A. It enables human beings t mve t anther planet.
    B. It helps peple get a better idea f the human life cycle.
    C. It inspires mre ther cuntries t d space explratins
    D. It makes it pssible t carry ut lng—term space missins 33. What des the underlined wrd “it” in paragraph 3 refer t?
    A. The mutatin. B. The experiment.
    C. The explratin. D. The space missin. 34. Why have crp seeds been brught t space since the last century?
    A. T prmte genetic changes and increase crp harvest.
    B. T figure ut hw t create an earth—like envirnment.
    C. T study the impact f micrgravity n crp grwth.
    D. T develp new crp species with strng ability t adapt.
    35. Where is the text mst prbably frm?
    A. Amedical reprt. B. A fashinmagazine.
    C. A science newspaper. D. A histrybk.
