Bilinguals (双语者)are smarter, says science. But the idea is relatively new. Up until the 1970s, mst educatrs had believed that learning tw languages at the same time wuld cnfuse children and slw their cgnitive (认知的)grwth.
Science disagreed with these pinins, says Ellen Bialystk, a prfessr f psychlgy. The arrival f new technlgy in the 1970s allwed scientists a new way t investigate hw different brains prcess language.
Bialystk has been researching the bilingual brain fr decades. She firmly believes bilinguals aren't smarter than the single-language learners, but bilingual brains differ in their use f executive (执行)functin-a system that bth helps the brain access particular regins r memries and allws a persn t switch between tasks.
Cntrary t media reprts, executive functin is nt the same as intelligence, Bialystk adds. Even if the relatinship between bilingualism and actual intelligence is unclear, executive functin can help peple d a lt f things that may make them seem smarter, such as ding mre things at the same time and cancelling ut things that take their attentin away.
Many peple believe that knwing at least ne ther language makes it easier t learn a new ne, and cgnitive functin may play a part in that-the equivalent (等同物)f gd study habits fr yur brain. But Bialystk thinks cgnitive functin has less impact n language learners than the similarities between languages' structure and vcabulary. "In learning thse patterns, yu can get a bit f a free ride in learning a new language, ” she says. Despite the verall cgnitive benefits, bilingualism may present sme disadvantages. When children learn vcabulary, mnlinguals (单语者)can spend mre time remembering wrds in ne language, while bilinguals have t cnstruct tw different vcabularies.
“The biggest advantage in being bilingual is the same as having great internatinal friends: It allws a persn t understand a different way f thinking, with unique philsphies and assumptins abut hw thers see the wrld, " Bialystk adds.
    28. What did mst educatrs think f children's bilingualism befre the 1970s?

    C. It shuld be taught separately.

    29. What can make learning a new language easy accrding t Bialystk?
    A. Executive functin.
    B. Cgnitive functin.
    C. Similar language patterns.
    D. Gd study habits.
    30. What is Bialystk's attitude tward bilingualism?
    A. Skeptical.
    B. Cnservative.
    C. Tlerant.
    D. Objective.
    31. Which culd be the best title fr the text?
    A. Are bilinguals really smarter?

    C. Why d bilinguals have an advantage?
    D. What factrs affect language learning?
    D
Humans have always assumed that there is a huge gulf between animal behavir and human develpment. Hwever, recent research int animals shws that animals are cntinuusly designing innvative methds t finish their tasks. Examining the nature and results f their creativity can help us understand evlutin.
Research shws that animals can als be creative. By inventing new behaviral patterns and adjusting their behavir t new cntexts, as well as t changes in scial and eclgical envirnments, researchers shw that animal innvatin can als be diverse. Fr instance, chimpanzees (黑猩猩)use tls such as sharp spines and stalks t remve the hearts f palm vegetables frm trees. Herring gulls (鸥)find ut quite a cruel way f killing rabbits-drwning them in the sea.
Innvative species tend t survive when they enter new places, but nvel behavir cannt be recgnized unless “nrmal” behavir is studied. Researchers can nw cunt and dcument the innvatins that have been created by species, which wuld help them t quantify their creativity. Studies als shw us that all animals are nt equally inventive, with primates (灵长 类)tending t be mre innvative due t their bigger brains.
The greatest scientific significance has been the innvatin shwn by animals such as apes, capuchins and macaques amng primates. These species f primates pssess the biggest brains cmpared t their bdy sizes. They are als heavy tl users. Their brad diets and cmplex frms f learning are als insightful. They shw an evlutinary strategy that gives them new slutins t life's challenges.
Hwever, even if these animals shw innvativeness, they d nt have the ability t im- prve upn the slutins f thers. Unless they share infrmatin accurately and cpy each thers' inventins, their creative inventins are likely t disappear befre they can be innvated further. This ability can be managed nly by humans, fr we are able t build n shared knwledge.

    B. Cnflict.

    A. T explain a rule.
    B. T supprt a viewpint.
    C. T explain a natural phenmenn.
    D. T cmpare the tw species.
    34. What aspect f animals des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
    A. Their failure t share infrmatin accurately.
    B. Their unwillingness t learn frm each ther.
    C. Their inability t take creativity frward.
    D. Their ability t cperate effectively.
    35. Where is this text mst likely frm?
