Miraculous (神奇的) StrengthOne chilly, December evening, I was preparing dinner. Suddenly, while setting the table, I heard a tremendous crash from the second floor. It was the kind of rare, heart-stopping noise that instantly struck fear into a mother’s heart. Even the dishes in. the kitchen cupboard rattled (发出咔嗒声)!My seven-year-old son began screaming for help, and I raced up the stairs without even stopping to put down the dinner fork I held in my hand. Entering my son’s room, I found my frightened toddler (学步的儿童)trapped under a five-drawer wooden dresser (衣橱). It had been torn from its wall anchor. I could hear crying as I ran toward him. As I leaned over, I saw his small, bloody face and the terror in his eyes. I pulled the large dresser off him. At that moment, I felt I could move mountains. I was fearful to look but quickly tried to assess how badly he was hurt. Begging him to stay still, I dialed 911 and began to pray. I prayed for the mercy that spared him and the healing he would need, given that I wasn’t sure of the extent of his injuries. In those minutes before the ambulance arrived, although I was in a chaotic situation with both my sons in tears, an inner calm kept me focused and controlled. I felt a strong presence keeping me steady. After the ambulance workers conducted a brief assessment, it was agreed that he should have a more extensive examination since this was a possible chest or head injury. A moment of pause forced me to process what had just happened. I recalled dashing up the stairs with a sense of fear as t0 what 1 would find. In only a few seconds, a lifetime of tender memories replayed in my mind. I had asked myself, “Is he still breathing?” “Are bones broken?” One moment. I was simply preparing dinner; the next. I was tearfully praying for my son’s life. On the way to the emergency room, I tried to keep him calm. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Back at the house, I found the miraculous strength that protected my son’s life-a small, hand-carved elephant. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】On the way to the emergency room, I tried to keep him calm. His parents disagreed at first, but Romeo finally talked them into letting him make the trip. With his folks’ blessing, Romeo turned his plans into action. “I drew a map. I would walk and take boats,” he told the Times. “And I’d take Dad. It would be handy to have an adult.”Handy indeed, since Romeo’s father, 46-year-old Phil Cox, is a retired journalist and filmmaker whose rich experiences gave him invaluable knowledge about making the way in less than ideal conditions.Romeo and Phil set off on their journey on June 20. The pair trekked (跋涉) across Italy, Switzerland, and France. Paragraph 1:While travelling, the two did meet some hardships or danger.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:On September 21, father and son finally made it to Grandma Rosemary’s home in London.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】Paragraph 1:While travelling, the two did meet some hardships or danger. With a burning sense of responsibility, Mike loved his job so much that he always went the extra mile. In the very early morning, Tim could always see Mike busy with breakfast for him. Later on, they went to school together to accompany the students to greet a new day of learning. At table, Mike exchanged what he knew in school with Tim. Typically, Mike would always wear a shiny smile for the funny moments; frown for his students’ problems or challenges. At that moment, Tim did feel his father’s passion for the class. Having finished the housework and said goodnight to Tim, Mike, eventually, sat at his desk peacefully and buried himself in what he enjoyed. In the delicate light of a lamp, he made preparations for the next day, trying to make what students found boring in the textbook come to life. Sometimes, Mike worried Tim might be envious of the attention he gave to other children. However, Tim didn’t complain about it. Instead, he admired his dedication and love. It was one of the qualities that made Mike such a fantastic father. Tim liked making videos of activities in daily life, and kept his camera handy in case there was any opportunity to capture footage Also, he captured some of Mike’s. One weekend, Tim approached Mike’s room, hoping to get advice on making videos for the next class meeting themed Love, only to find Mike staring at the photos of his students on the wall, a little upset. “What happened?” Tim asked as he stepped into Mike’s room. “You know, some of your classmates recently have been rebellious (叛逆的). Despite discipline and heartfelt communications, they’re still breaking rules, skipping classes and complaining about my strictness. Though I could be demanding sometimes, I’m concerned about them. ” Mike sighed. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world. While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel. We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait—and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother—we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order. More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds. To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong. Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild. His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material. One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】 One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels. But the family was none too happy about his visit. They scolded and swatted at him. At first Squirt was so unhappy that he avoided them. And then he quickly learned some social skills. He would take some snacks to meet them. For several days he played all day in the trees surrounding our house but came down at bedtime. One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard. Our girls fretted. They wanted to seek Squirt. We prevented them because it was too dangerous. But when the sun rose the next day, there was Squirt, begging for food. And that remained the pattern for weeks. The experience was entertaining and heartwarming for our family. In the wild and somewhat silly moments of raising an orphaned baby squirrel, our children learned to value and appreciate life.【语篇解读】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作者一家一天看到一只幼小的迷路的松鼠,他们决定收养它,看着这只小松鼠从瘦弱幼小,慢慢变的健康活泼,让作者一家感觉既有趣又温暖。1. 词汇激活行为类①责骂:scold/blame/rebuke②拍打:swat/slap/hit③寻找:seek/find/look for/search for④阻止:prevent/put a stop to/head off情绪类①高兴的:happy/delighted②有趣的:entertaining/delightful/engrossing四、(2023·重庆·统考模拟预测)It was in 1959, one week before my 10th birthday, my mother announced we were taking a trip to Niagara Falls when summer vacation started. Reservations had been made for a hotel and a Maid of the Mist Boat Tour trip. It all sounded incredibly good until Mom said we would drive to Canada.Driving in the car meant I’d share the back seat with my 3-year-old sister. “Sitting in the back seat all day is dull,” I thought.“Hey, can we take a plane there instead?” I asked between mouthfuls of hamburger and French fries.“Sorry, honey, maybe next time,” my mother replied as she and my father exchanged glances.“Dad, how long a ride is it to Canada?”“It’s about nine hours, pal.”This was an excellent chance to get one parent on my side. “That’s not fair to you, Dad. You’ll be too tired to have fun after driving so much.” I crossed my fingers. “Then you’ll have to drive all the way home too! Being on a plane would be very relaxing for you because you won’t be driving so much.”My father smiled and patted my back. “Thanks for being so concerned, but I’ll be fine. No need to worry.” Then he looked at my mother and winked.Parents can be so frustrating. Didn’t they get it? I’m in desperate need of a plane ride, and I need something cool to talk about with my friends when we get home. I lost control. “Sitting in the back seat of the car sucks,” I blurted out, then rapidly covered my mouth with a hand to prevent any other forbidden words from escaping.“Jay!” My mother shouted. “Watch your mouth!”“I don’t want to hear that type of language again,” my father said, slapping the table angrily.“Ok, sorry, but I really wanted to go by plane.”“This conversation’s over.” My father said. “If you have finished eating, go to your room.”On Saturday morning, We loaded all our luggage into the car. My father turned the key and started the engine.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Then I was surprised to see a sign that read “Airport Parking”.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】My father turned the key and started the engine. There I was, stuck in the back seat with no hope of having great tales of adventure for my friends. The most exciting thing that might happen in the car would be my sister throwing up in my lap. Not exactly the kind of story I’d want anyone to hear. I sighed with disappointment and stared at the road ahead with a blank expression. Bored, I rolled down the window, spitting into the air to see how far my saliva would travel. Suddenly, I noticed a large plane flying overhead. It looked as if it was coming in for a landing. Then I was surprised to see a sign that read “Airport Parking”. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We were heading right into the airport! Why were we here? What was going on? Despite all my rapid-fire questions, I was told to wait until we reached the terminal. It seemed to take forever for us to park and check in all our baggage. “Happy Birthday, Jay,” my father said as he bent down to kiss my head. “We were planning this as a birthday present for you all along,” my mother explained, “despite your bad language the other night.” Hearing this, I was overwhelmed by a sense of guilt with tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes.【语篇解读】本文以事件为线索展开,讲述了作者因为想要乘坐飞机旅行,没有得到家人的同意所以与家人产生争执,在旅行的当天发现他的家人为了他的生日秘密地准备了乘坐飞机旅行而深受感动的故事。1. 凝视:stare at/glare at②.注意:notice/take notice of③.到达:reach/arrive at情绪类①.失望地:with disappointment/disappointedly/in despair②.感激:gratitude/appreciation五、(2023·河北·校联考模拟预测)At five years old, my youngest daughter Lisette should have been way too young for me to be talking to her about guardian angels. But here I was, standing next to an adult-sized stretcher(担架), as her child-sized body lay in a huge white sheet. She was about to be wheeled in for her second brain surgery. Born with hydrocephalus (脑积水), Lisette had her first brain surgery at seven months old. Little did we know then that this would be the first of many corrective surgeries to come, and that she would spend a lot of time at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. I took hold of Lisette’s hands. As we locked eyes with each other, I held her tiny hands in mine and asked her if she could feel her guardian angels around her. She looked around as if she could see and feel each angel, and she responded, “Yes, I can feel them.”As I had hoped, this became an instrument of faith we could both rely on every time we faced another challenging procedure. We would hold hands, and I would introduce her to her guardian angels. Once she acknowledged their presence, she would be ready to let go and face what came next. Then and only then would I allow them to take her away. Months later, Lisette and I stopped by my mother’s house for a routine visit. For some unknown reason, as we entered my mother’s house, we stopped right in front of the first door in the hallway, which led to my mothers bedroom. This particular room was usually off-limits to the grandchildren, as there were many breakables on display. Before I could register what she was up to, Lisette made her way quickly and boldly into her grammy’s room. As I rushed to lead her out of the bedroom, my mother decided to make an exception since Lisette wasn’t touching or disturbing anything. “Let her be,” my mother insisted, and we made ourselves comfortable right there in the door frame(框) so that we could keep an eye on Lisette while she explored the room. As my mother and I chatted away about our day, I was distracted by Lisette’s little voice in the background. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________I pulled down the photo. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】As my mother and I chatted away about our day, I was distracted by Lisette’s little voice in the background. Her clear little voice made me reminded of my own childhood. Just as we were talking about the happy moments when I was Lisette’s age, Lisette let out a cry which drew both of our attention. She pointed at a photo in an album on the wall and said: “Mom, That is my guardian angel, I see her! ” A second look confirmed me that it was a photo of me dressed like an angel taken when I was Lisette’s age.I pulled down the photo. Lisette hold it all her way home as if she found something priceless. The photo was put up on her bedroom wall. Every night when I finished the bedside story she would inform me the same words: Mom, that is my guardian angel. The smile on her face melted my heart and I knew that I also found my own angel, my daughter Lisette.【语篇解读】本文以情感发展为线索展开,讲述了作者的女儿小时候被诊断出脑积水,经历了数次手术,作者引导孩子感受守护天使的存在,孩子从一个照片中看到了守护天使并找到了安全感,也让作者感受到了她自己的守护天使就是女儿。1. 分心:distract/disturb②意识到:knew /realize③看见:see/spot/catch sight of 情绪类①使……想起了:make… reminded/cross one’s mind/②发出尖叫:let out a cry/ release a cry 一、(2022·全国·统考高考真题)It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest. I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run. What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event! I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward. David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination. We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.【语篇解读】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作者是一名特殊教育教师,在大型越野赛跑那天,发现患有大脑疾病的大卫独自站在一旁。 词汇激活:行动类:①深呼吸:with a deep breath/breathe deeply②坚持做:insisted on doing/be stick to doing情绪类:①热情:enthusiastically /with great passion②骄傲:be proud of/take pride in二、(2021·全国·统考高考真题)A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISEThe twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up. With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me. When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty? As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away. Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight. During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.” A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from the spider’s web. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how it was getting on now. Had it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to survive? I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, its beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away.【语篇解读】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作者被邀请去一个农场野餐,发现一个房子里有只蜂鸟被蜘蛛网困住了,作者把蜂鸟救了,把蜂鸟带出去的时候它迟迟不肯走,当作者走到一条布满黑莓的小路时,它开始动了,但是却不肯飞走,徘徊着,后来终于飞走了,当作者准备离开时,蜂鸟又飞到作者面前,好像是在和作者告别。1. 词汇激活行为类①思绪回到……:thoughts drift back to/thoughts return to②匆匆回到:rush back to/hurry back to③盯着:eyes locked on/eyes staring at情绪类①宽慰:feel a surge of relief/feel relieved②感激:grateful/thankful
