As a teenager, what do you think all the problems mean for your future and for the future of the planet? For our October 2016 writing contest, we want you to really consider what you think about environmental problems.
Use these questions to help focus your essay
● What environmental problem do you think should cause the greatest alarm and action?
● Do you think that you have a personal responsibility to help solve environmental problems or do you feel helpless against the struggle?

George Turner, 48, owner of Penuel Bicycles in Inglewood, California, talks with respect about his childhood BMX dirt bike. “I was mad keen on cycling.” he says. “I did whatever it took to get on that bike, as long as I was home before dark.” Home meant housework, homework and annoying brothers. But a bike meant escapes.
In 2010, George transformed his childhood love into a livelihood, and opened his bicycle shop, Penuel Bicycles. The shop fulfilled a lifelong dream. Before that, he had worked for years delivering boxes for FedEx while selling bike accessories online.
“Bicycles kept me out of trouble,” George remembers. “They were part of my life.” He figured that was still true for kids when he opened Penuel Bicycles. George expected parents to crowd inside, eager to buy shiny new bikes for their kids. He looked forward to helping boys and girls discover the joy of riding — and stay out of trouble — just as he had.
None of that happened, however.
George found that kids these days lead a different life. Usually, they don’t want a bike for their birthday. And most of them ever don’t know how to ride a bike. Instead of getting out and riding, they prefer spending their time on their phones indoors. As kids don’t ride, it is impossible that parents crowd in his shop to buy new bikes. Nine years after opening his Penuel Bicycles, George feared that he had to close the shop.
Then in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic swept the nation. Surprisingly, the pandemic saved George’s business. During the pandemic, many American people found that cycling was a good way to exercise and also a safe way to get around. The demand for new bikes kept growing and people in George’s neighborhood pulled out their old bikes and wheeled them to Penuel Bicycles to get repaired. Now he is trying his best to meet his customers’ needs and hopes that his customers can really discover the joy of riding.
4. What did the bike mean to George in his childhood?
A. Taking up sports. B. Getting away from daily routine.
C. A precious birthday gift. D. A convenient vehicle.
5. What is George’s lifelong dream?
A. Making a big fortune. B. Being a member of FedEx.
C. Opening his own bicycle shop. D. Helping people pursue riding pleasure.
6. Why was George’s bike business once in a tough situation?
A. The lifestyle of kids changed.
B. He wasn’t good at management.
C. Bikes were not as charming as before.
D. His business was affected by the pandemic.
7. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Joy of Wheel B. Passion for Exercise
C. Improvement of Bike Business D. Increasing Demand for New Bikes
C
A picture may be worth a thousand words, but thanks to an artificial intelligence program called DALL-E 2, you can have a professional-looking image with far fewer.
Open Al researchers built DALL-E 2 from an enormous collection of images with captions. They gathered some of the images online and licensed others. Using DALL-E2 looks a lot like searching for an image on the web: you type in a short phrase into a text box, and it gives back six images.
But instead of selecting pictures from the web, the program creates six brand-new images, each of which reflects some version of the entered phrase. Nearly all of them could probably pass for professional photographs or drawings.
It’s easy to imagine this tool transforming the way people make images and communicate, whether via memes, greeting cards, advertising – and, yes, art.
You might say there’s little artistic merit in an image produced by a few keystrokes. But this line of thinking echoes the classic take that photography cannot be art because a machine did all the work. Today the human authorship and craft involved in artistic photography are recognized, and critics understand that the best photography involves much more than just pushing a button.
Some artists, like Ryan Murdoch, have advocated for prompt-based (基于提示的) image-making to be recognized as art. ‘They argue that the art, in using a system like DALL-E 2, comes not just from the final text prompt, but in the entire creative process that led to that prompt. Different artists will follow different processes and end up with different results that reflect their own approaches and skills.
It’s too early to judge the significance of this art form. The first films by the Lumiere brothers in the1890s were novelties, not cinematic masterpieces; it amazed people to see images moving at all.
Al art software develops so quickly that there’s continual technical and artistic novelty. It seems as if, each year, there’s an opportunity to explore an exciting new technology – each more powerful than the last, and each seemingly ready to transform art and society.
8. What can DALL-E 2 do for you?
A. It edits your photographs.
B. It reproduces your paintings.
C. It collects images from the web.
D. It turns your words into pictures.
9. Why does the author mention photography in Paragraph 5?
A. To explain a rule. B. To illustrate a point.
C. To present a finding. D. To define a concept.
10. What does the author think of Al art software?
A. lt is promising. B. It is risky.
C. It is unreliable. D. It is superior.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. DALL-E 2 Has Arrived. Are Artists in Trouble?
B. DALL-E 2: What Exactly Is“ AI-generated Art”?
C. DALL-E 2 Can Produce an Incredible Image ---- But Is It Art?
D. DALL-E2: Why Is the AI Program a Revolutionary Invention?
D
Tetraplegia (四肢瘫痪) patients are prisoners of their own bodies, unable to perform the slightest movement. Researchers have been working for years to develop systems that can help these patients carry out some tasks on their own. “Assistance from robots could help these people recover some of their lost abilities, since the robots can perform tasks in their place.”
Professor Billard carried out a study with Professor José del R.Millan. They have developed a computer program that can control a robot using electrical signals sent out by a patient’s brain. No voice control or touch function is needed, patients can move the robot simply with their thoughts. This involved developing an algorithm (运算法则) that could adjust the robot’s movements based only on a patient’s thoughts.
To use the system, all the patient needs to do is to look at the robot. If the robot makes an incorrect move, the patient’s brain will send an “error message” through a clearly identifiable signal, as if the patient is saying “No, not like that.” The robot will then understand that what it’s doing is wrong. The process goes pretty quickly — only three to five attempts are usually needed for the robot to figure out the right response and achieve the patient’s wishes.
“The robot’s AI program can learn rapidly, but you have to tell it when it makes a mistake so that it can correct its behavior,” says Professor Millán. “Developing the detection technology for error signals was one of the biggest technical difficulties we faced.” Iason Batzianoula, the study’s lead author, adds, “What was particularly difficult in our study was linking a patient’s brain activity to the robot's control system — or in other words, ‘translating’ a patient’s brain signals into actions performed by the robot.”
12. What’s the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To attract more researchers. B. To introduce the topic of this text.
C. To state the research of tetraplegia. D. To show sympathy for the patients.
13. How do the robots perform their task?
A. By sensing the touch. B. By monitoring computers.
C. By reading people’s thoughts. D. By following voice commands.
14. What did Iason Batzianoula think of the robot’s AI program?
A. Challenging. B. Cost-effective.
C. Fruitless. D. Time-consuming.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The development of mind-controlled robots.
B. The sufferings of the tetraplegia patients.
C. The complexity of the algorithm.
D. The promising future of robots.

Dogs, more so than almost any other domestic pets, are desperate for human eye contact. ____16____and according to a new study, that pull on the heartstrings might be exactly why dogs can give us those looks at all.
____17____ Studying the two animals is a bit like cracking open a four-legged time capsule. A paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that dogs’ faces are structured for complex expression in a way that wolves’ aren’t.
For the study, a team looked at two muscles (the RAOL and LAOM muscles) that work together to widen and open a dog’s eyes, causing them to appear bigger and more lovely, which we read as distinctly humanlike. The muscles for two short, straight lines, which connect the ring of muscle around a dog’s eye to either end of the brow above. ____18____ Therefore, they concluded that the origin of these complex facial expressions is after dogs splitting from wolves. Research has also shown that when dogs work these muscles, humans respond more positively. This isn’t simply a coincidental love story, in which the eyes of two species just so happen to meet across a crowded planet. ____19____
For a species to change quickly, a pretty powerful force must be acting on it. ____20____ .We connect more deeply with animals capable of making humanlike facial movements, so dogs have evolved to look like our own human babies to be selected for adoption.
A. Dogs are similar to wolves.
B. And that’s where humans come in.
C. It’s hard for most people to resist the shining eyes of a little dog.
D. But in the four gray wolves the researchers looked at, neither muscle was present.
E. Like the other best partnerships, this one is more likely the result of years of evolution.
F. Researchers have long been interested in the ways dogs make eye contact with humans.
G. Dogs split off from their wolf relatives — specifically, gray wolves — as many as 33, 000 years ago.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was mid-December, and the temperature was a chilly minus 20-degree Celsius. I walked with my head down, passing the homeless beggars and ignoring all of them as usual. Then I saw him, sitting against a building, wrapped in thin cloth, holding a white cup in front of him. I heard his shaky, pitiful voice target me as I sped past him.
“Spare some change?” he asked. “I’ll appreciate it.”
I didn’t even bother looking up at him. In my mind, I briefly pictured him walking into the closest pub and drinking whisky with whatever money he managed to get. Or, maybe he needed another shot of cocaine. See, like most people in the city, it took me only moments to pass judgement on his life.
“I have no money on me.” I said quickly.
Looking back, I feel as though fate had set out that day to teach me a lesson. And it succeeded. Just a few feet past him, I slipped on a piece of ice on the sidewalk! I landed square on my right knee. The acute pain passed throughout as I lay on the ground. Then I heard a familiar voice only inches above me.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
I knew immediately this was the man I had just rushed past. Before tears welled up in my eyes, I saw the smooth, sympathetic look in his eyes.
I held his hand as I struggled to get to my feet. He held my arm as I limped (一瘸一拐地走) to the nearby bus stop and sat on the bench.
“My name is Mike,” he said with concern. “That was quite a fall you took, and you really need to see a doctor.”
“This bus goes past the hospital,” I said quickly, pointing to the bus sign above me.
Mike paused, and a look of sudden realization crossed his face. He pulled out his small white cup and dumped all the change into his hand.
“I know you don’t have any change on you” he said, “I think this is just enough for you to take the bus.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was overcome with guilt as I remembered the lie I had told him only a few minutes earlier.
