    Unit 4  Do it yourself Task

    设计说明

    首先通过观看一段视频并听一首英文歌导入新课,然后学习一些有关制作DIY生日卡片的词汇,学会用一些单词和短语来描述DIY过程,由此开展写作。最后通过练习来复习本课时的内容。

    教学目标

    通过本单元的教学,让学生达成以下目标:

    1.知识目标

    掌握词汇:secret, wrong, spell, balloon, stick, cover, complete, paint, keep it secret, plan to do, have fun doing, go wrong, cut out

    2.能力目标

    (1)学习如何写日记,包括段落分布、句子衔接等。

    (2)学会围绕本单元话题,写一篇关于自己DIY的日记。

    3.情感目标

    了解人物性格特征以及喜欢的工作,培养良好的个人品质。

    重点难点

    重点:课文朗读;新学知识点的掌握和运用

    难点:相关的书面表达

    教学过程

    Step 1  Lead-in

    1. Watch a video.

      Play the video called Welcome to the DIY World, and then let the students listen to the song called A Wonderful World.

    2. Show some pictures and ask:

      What do you decide to do if your mum’s birthday is coming?

    I decide to ...( a birthday cake/ a birthday card... ) if my mum’s birthday is coming.

    Then students practice in pairs.

    Step 2  Presentation  

    1. Show them some pictures and present some new words.

      (1) secret   (2) keep it secret 

    2. Free talk

    Do you want to make the present at home with the help of your mum?

    Can you make it by yourself?

    Who will help you make it?

    3. Pair work

      A: What do you decide to do if your mum’s birthday is coming?

    B: I decide to ...

    A: Do you want to make the present at home with the help of your mum?

    B: I..., because...

    A: Can you make it by yourself?

    B: ...

    A: Who will help you with...?

    B: ... will help me with...

    A: Great! You will have fun working together.

    Step 3  Listening

    1. T: Suzy’s mum’s birthday is coming. What did she do for her mum? Lets listen carefully.

    2. Listen carefully again and answer the questions.

    (1) Why didn’t Suzy make the card at home?

      Because she wanted to keep it secret.

    (2) Did Sandy help?

      Yes. Sandy helped her with the drawing.

    (3) How long did Suzy and Sandy spend making it? 

      Two hours.

    (4) What mistakes did Suzy keep making when working on it?

      She kept spelling the words wrong because she was too excited.

    (5) What colour did she use for the roses?

      She coloured them red, blue and pink.

    (6) Did they make a mess in the house?

      Yes. There was paint on everything.

    Step 4  Practice

    3. Retelling

      Paragraph 1:

      Suzy’s mum’s birthday is coming, so she decided to make her a birthday card by herself. She went to Sandy’s home to make the card because she wanted to keep it secret.

      Paragraph 2:

      She planned to make the card with some roses on it. Sandy helped her with the drawing. They had fun working together. It took them two hours to finish. Lots of things went wrong during that time. She made some mistakes when she wrote the sentence “Happy Birthday, Mum”. She kept spelling the words wrong . She was too excited!

      Paragraph 3&4:

      Finally, she coloured the roses red, blue and pink. She also cut out a picture of colourful balloons and stuck it on the cover. When she completed the card, there was paint on everything: the table, Sandy’s books, her clothes, her hands and face!

      This is the first card she made for her Mum. She hopes her mother will like it.                            

    Step 5  Language points

    1. Mum’s birthday is coming, so I decided to make her a birthday card by myself. 妈妈的生日要到了,因此我决定自己为她制作一张生日卡片。

    (1) Mum’s birthday is coming.

    用现在进行时表示马上要发生的动作或事情。

    The bus is coming. 公交车要来了。

    (2) decide to do sth. 决定去做某事; decide not to do sth. 决定不去做某事

    I decided to do a DIY job at the weekend. 我决定周末做个手工。

    Tom decided not to play with matches. 汤姆决定不玩火柴了。

    (3) make sb. sth./ make sth. for sb. 给某人制作某物

    类似的短语还有:

    buy sb. sth. = buy sth. for sb.为某人购买某物

    cook sb. sth. = cook sth. for sb. 为某人烹饪……

    2. …because I wanted to keep it secret ……因为我想保密。

    keep it secret 保密

    He tried to keep it secret.他尽力保密。

    3. I planned to make the card with some roses on it. 我计划制作一张上面有些玫瑰花的卡片。

    plan to do sth. 计划做某事; plan not to do sth. 计划不做某事

    She plans to go to the library this weekend. 她计划本周末去图书馆。

    4. We had fun working together. 我们一起工作很高兴。

    have fun doing sth. 做某事很快乐

    We have fun playing basketball after school. 我们放学后一起打篮球很高兴。

    拓展:have a great time doing sth.

    Look! The students are having a great time playing on the playground.

    看!那些学生在操场上正玩得很开心。

    5. Lots of things went wrong during that time. 在那段时间很多事情出错了。

    go wrong出错

    Everything seemed to go wrong.

    =It seemed that everything went wrong.

    似乎所有事情都出错了。

    6. I also cut out a picture of colourful balloons and stuck it on the cover.

    我也剪出一张有彩色气球的图片, 并把它贴到封面上。

    (1) cut out剪出

    They are cutting out some squares. 他们正在剪出一些正方形。

    (2) stick 粘住, 粘贴

    stick sth. on/to sth. 把某物贴到某物上

    Please stick the timetable on the wall. 请把这张时刻表贴到墙上。

    7. When I completed the card, there was paint on everything. 当我完成这张卡片时, 所有的东西上都有颜料。

    complete= finish完成

    I have completed my homework early today.我今天很早就完成了我的作业。

    Step 6  Analysis

    1. Analyze how Suzy made her mother a birthday card.

    Step 1  She made a birthday card with some roses on it.

    Step 2  She coloured the roses red, blue and pink.

    Step 3  She cut a picture of colourful balloons and stuck it on the cover.

    Pay attention to the four words: made, coloured, cut, stuck.

    2. Analyze the structure of the passage.

    There are four paragraphs in the passage. What’s the main idea of each paragraph?

    Para. 3: What happened at last?

    Para. 4: Suzy’s hope/feelings.

    3. While-writing.

    Para. 1:      Introduction (介绍)

    Para. 4:      Conclusion (结果)

    Step 7  Practice

    . Play a game.

    1. Show them six DIY courses. (make a salad, make sandwiches, make a bookshelf, make a card, make a pizza, make a pumpkin lantern) and say :Welcome to the DIY course. There are six DIY courses today. Each group can choose one of them to attend.

    2. Game rules:

    (1) Discuss (讨论) how to do your DIY job with your group members and try to remember the DIY steps (步骤) on the paper.

    (2) Each group will choose one student to show how to do the DIY job.

    3. Show time.

    Choose some groups to share their DIY diary in front of the classroom and remind them to use what they learnt just now in DIY courses to write their own DIY diaries and try not to make mistakes.

    (1)Tips:

    Ask the students to write the DIY story in different paragraphs and avoid the following mistakes.

    word usage mistake(用词错误) 

    punctuation mistake(标点错误) 

    wrong tense(时态错误)

    spelling mistake(拼写错误) 

    missing word(漏词错误) 

    (2) Useful expressions:

    1 Why   I decided to … by myself/with… I … because …

    2 How   …helped me with …We had fun working together. It took me… minutes/hours to finish.I made some mistakes when …

    3 What  Finally/ at last/ in the end, … When I completed …, …

    4 Hope  I hope …

    Let the students write their own DIY diaries in class. They can use the useful expressions above and avoid mistakes.

    (3) Sharing time.

    T: Exchange(交换) your DIY story with your partner. Check your partners DIY story and give him/her final score (最后得分). Give them the writing evaluation table (评价表).

    (4) Some advice about DIY.

    Do things by yourself !

    It is meaningful and interesting !

    You can enjoy yourself !

    You will improve your skills!

    You can have fun with your family!

    You will be more confident!

    Step 7  Homework

    1. Write your own diary entry about one of the DIY jobs you did.

    2. Revise what you have learned.

    3. Get ready for the next period of class.
