Talk about Tan Dun and his music. 2. Show a question and ask them to answer. Question: Why did Tan Dun know very well about the sound of flowing water? Answer: Because he grew up near the Liuyang River. 3. Lead in today’s grammar. Step 2 Grammar A 1. Show a question and ask them to answer it by using because. Why does Tan Dun like the sounds of the rushing water and the blowing wind? Because he thinks the best music comes from nature. 2. Give them other examples to show why and because. A: Why do you love Michael Jackson? B: Because he was the King of Pop. 3. Show them the grammar rules and give them some explanation. because表示直接原因,其语气最强。常用来回答why引起的疑问句。 I stayed at home because it rained. 因为下雨我待在家里。 Because Lingling was ill, she didn’t come to school. 玲玲因为生病了,没有来上学。 — Why is she absent? 她为什么缺席? — Because she is sick. 因为她病了。 4. Practise why and because. A: Why are you wearing a raincoat? B: Because it’s going to rain. I am wearing a raincoat because it’s going to rain. It is going to rain, so I am wearing a raincoat. Exercise: ______ her daughter hadn’t come back, _____ she looked worried. A. Because; / B. Because; so C. /; so D. So; / Stress the rule: We never use the conjunction so in sentences with because. Answer: AC 5. Do the exercises on Page 70. Questions about Tan Dun. Answers: 1 Because he is a world-famous composer. 2 Because he thinks the best music comes from nature. 3 Because he has successfully brought Chinese and Western music together. 4 Because he has created a new type of music—music without boundaries. Step 3 Grammar B 1. Talk about Tan Dun and his music. Show the sentences. Since he had no musical instruments then, he made music with common objects like stones and paper. As he likes the sounds of nature, Tan uses them a lot in his music. 2. Present the sentences with since and as. Tell the students that since and as are used to give reasons for something. Usually the reasons are already known. Their tone is weaker than because. 3. Give them some explanation. (1)since表示显然的或已为人知的理由,常译为“因为;既然”,语气比because稍弱,通常置于句首。 Since he asks you, you’ll tell him why. 既然他问你,你就告诉他为什么吧。 Since everyone is here, let’s start. 既然大家都到齐了,咱们就开始吧。 Since I understood very little Japanese, I couldn’t follow the conversation. 因为我日语懂得不多,所以我听不懂谈话。 (2)as表示的“原因”是双方已知的事实或显而易见的原因,或者理由不是很重要,含义与since相同,但语气更弱,没有since正式,常译为“因为,由于”。 We all like her as she is kind. 我们都喜欢她,因为她善良。 As I had a cold, I was absent from school. 因为我感冒了,所以我没去上学。 As Xiaoming was not ready, we went without him. 由于小明没有准备好,所以我们没带他去。 4.
