Horseback riding might not seem like a typical New York City activity, but one program has several horse farms throughout the city’s busy districts. GallopNYC provides lessons to veterans(老兵) and people with disabilities — horseback riding is their therapy(疗法).
Olivia Diver visits the GallopNYC location in the Howard Beach neighborhood in Queens. Diver has only been riding horses for a few months, but says she’s already felt the benefits. “It helped me come out of my comfort zone and be less shy and less in my shell,” she said. Trying something new shows her she can accomplish other things as well.
James Wilson, executive director at GallopNYC, says there are many ways horses can be therapeutic. “The horse sees the world in the way somebody with post-traumatic stress disor-der (PTSD) might see the world, in a really guarded, sort of anxious way,” he explained. “So, somebody with PTSD and a horse can sort of partner together and see the world in the same way and kind of take care of each other.” Horses can also help with physical disabilities. After two years of therapeutic riding, a teenager, who had so little core strength that his mother had to be in the bathtub with him, had enough core strength that he could be in the shower by himself. Wilson said, “The movement of the horse will loosen up muscles that might be really tight. And the movement helps stimulate other body parts and other muscles that you might not use. ”
“CallopNYC has about 1,000 people on is waitlist for lessons, but prioritizes people with disabilities and veterans. We believe that everybody benefits from the time on a horse, so if you want to ride a horse, come on, let’s go,” Wilson said. Lessons are $55, but the non-profit fundraises to help cover or lower the cost for customers who may need support.
24.Why does GallopNYC offer the lessons?
A.To make horse riding typical in NYC.
B.To provide part-time jobs for veterans.
C.To promote disabled people’s incomes.
D.To offer a cure to special groups.
25.What can we infer about Olivia Diver?
A.She has learned new life skills.
B.She has found her comfort zone.
C.She has gained much confidence.
D.She has changed her attitude to horses.
26.What does paragraph 3 intend to show?
A.GallopNYC’s leader. B.The effect of the therapy.
C.Profit James Wilson has got. D.Ways of guarding people’s anxiety.
27.What does Wilson think of the program according to the last paragraph?
A.It is well received. B.It is highly profitable.
C.It needs to be more creative. D.It takes ages to see the results.

According to the Solar Energy Industry Association, the number of solar panels installed(安装)has grown rapidly in the past decade, and it has to grow even faster to meet climate goals. But all of that growth will take up a lot of space, and though more and more people accept the concept of solar energy, few like large solar panels to be installed near them.
Solar developers want to put up panels as quickly and cheaply as possible, so they haven’t given much thought to what they put under them. Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.
“Solar projects need to be good neighbors,” says Jordan Macknick, the head of the Innovative Site Preparation and Impact Reductions on the Environment(InSPIRE)project. “They need to be protectors of the land and contribute to the agricultural economy.” InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to “low-impact” solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land. One of the easiest low-impact solar strategies is providing habitat for pollinators(传粉昆虫).
Habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change have caused dramatic declines in pollinator populations over the past couple of decades, which has damaged the U.S. agricultural economy. Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use. Conservation organizations put out pollinator-friendliness guidelines for home gardens, businesses, schools, cities—and now there are guidelines for solar farms.
Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction. “These pollinator-friendly solar farms can have a valuable impact on everything that’s going on in the landscape,” says Macknick.
28.What do solar developers often ignore?
A.The decline in the demand for solar energy.
B.The negative impact of installing solar panels.
C.The rising labor cost of building solar farms.
D.The most recent advances in solar technology.
29.What does InSPIRE aim to do?
A.Improve the productivity of local farms.
B.Invent new methods for controlling weeds.
C.Make solar projects environmentally friendly.
D.Promote the use of solar energy in rural areas.
30.What is the purpose of the laws mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To conserve pollinators. B.To restrict solar development.
C.To diversify the economy. D.To ensure the supply of energy.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Pollinators: To Leave or to Stay B.Solar Energy: Hope for the Future
C.InSPIRE: A Leader in Agriculture D.Solar Farms: A New Development

The expression“a thirst for knowledge" may soon have a new meaning for millions of people who have no way to get clean water. Researchers have developed a book with specially treated pages that can turn dirty water into clean and drinkable water. They say their invention could improve the lives of many in the developing world.
About 700 million people around the world are at risk of disease or even death because their drinking water is not clean. The water is polluted by harmful bacteria.
The book contains 25 pages. Each page is about one millimeter thick. The pages contain very small particles (微粒) of silver. The pages can be used as filters(过滤器)to remove harmful microorganisms(微生物) that can pollute drinking water. The filter kills the organisms that pass through it.
Pictures on the pages show the dangers of dirty water and how to use the book for those unable to read. The pages are made of filter paper. They are designed to be torn from the book. Water can be poured through the paper to be cleaned.
Ms. Dankovich, the inventor, says each page can treat up to 100 liters of water. She recently presented her invention at the meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston, Massachusetts. She was asked whether she had considered adding classic literature on the book's pages.
"The idea of classic texts—that's of interest maybe later. We have discussed a little bit more exciting text. But we really haven't had the time to go through that part," she says.
Teri Dankovich and another researcher tested the drinkable book in Bangladesh, Ghana and South Africa. The tests proved to be successful.
Water for Life, a non-governmental organization, has provided financial support for the project.
32.What do we learn about the book from the text?
A.It has pages with several functions. B.It is about environment protection.
C.It sells well around the world. D.It can treat about 100 liters of water.
33.What does the underlined phrase "that part" in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A.Classic texts. B.Exciting discussion.
C.Invention presentation. D.Financial support.
34.In which country did not the researchers test the drinkable book?
A.Ghana B.Bangladesh.
C.South Africa. D.America.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Researchers have found a way to save those being ill.
B.Book pages could provide safe drinking water.
C.Knowledge is as important as drinkable water.
D.Millions of people are in great need of drinkable water.
第二节 (其5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How much time do you spend doing research before you make a decision? There are people who go over every detail exhaustively before making a choice. ____36____ Psychologists call this way of thinking a cognitive bias (偏见), a tendency toward a specific mental mistake.
To study “jumping”, we examined decision-making patterns among more than 600 people from the general population. We found that jumpers made more errors than non-jumpers on problems that require thoughtful analysis. ____37____ In a quiz about US civics, they overestimated the chance that their answers were right significantly more than other participants did—even when their answers were wrong.
So what is behind “jumping”? Psychological researchers commonly distinguish between two pathways of thought: automatic system, which reflects ideas that come to the mind easily, spontaneously and without effort, and controlled system including conscious and effortful reasoning. Jumpers and nonjumpers are equally influenced by automatic thoughts. ____38____
It is the controlled system that helps people counter balance mental biases introduced by the automatic system. As a result, jumpers were more likely to accept the conclusions made at first blush without further questioning. A lack of controlled thinking is also more broadly connected to their problematic beliefs and faulty reasoning.
____39____ A method called metacognitive training can be used to target their biases, which can help people think more deliberatively. In this training, participants are confronted with their own biases. They can learn about the missteps and other ways of thinking through the problem at hand. It helps to chip away at participants’ overconfidence.
In everyday life, the question of whether we should think things through or instead go with our gut is a frequent and important one. ____40____ Sometimes the most important decision we make can be to take some more time before making a choice.
A.Happily, there may be some hope for jumpers.
B.Also, jumpers had problems with overconfidence.
C.But a fair number of individuals are quick to jump to conclusions.
D.It is certainly possible for them to overthink things to take a decision.
E.We plan to continue the work to trace other problems introduced by jumping.
F.The jumpers, however, did not engage in controlled reasoning to the same degree as non-jumpers.
G.Recent studies show that even gathering just a little bit more evidence may help us avoid a major mistake.
