Ice. Snow. Water. Penguins. The attraction of Antarctica. This cold, southernmost continent is an increasingly popular tourist destination. Its vast landscape of ice and snow,as well as its wildlife population, attracts nature-loving vacationers and some tourists who enjoy activities like cross-country skiing. Others simply float through the area on board a cruise (乘船游览). Whatever the reason people come to Antarctica, they're coming. And it's causing some controversy(争论).
But before we get into that, let's look at some facts about Antarctica.
Antarctica is a landmass located around the South Pole and it has more ice than any other place on Earth. In fact,99. 5 percent of its landmass is covered with ice. During arctic winter, the ice sheet covering the continent gets even bigger. Its shape is roughly round, with one arm reaching out toward South America. That is why many trips to Antarctica are via Argentina.
Even during its warmest period,Antarctica's temperatures mostly stay below freezing. During the winter, they can drop to as low as minus 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The continent has little rain and its snow is dry and powdery(粉末状的).
Antarctica wasn't even formally explored until the 19th century. Today, though, many scientists and researchers call Antarctica their temporary home, living in special facilities when they study the ecosystem and native life.
Since Antarctica has no human inhabitants, many nations have laid claim to it. However, the terms of the Antarctic Treaty state that the continent is reserved purely for scientific research. This also keeps Antarctica a war-free and nuclear-free zone. Currently,53 parties have signed the treaty.

Some houses are designed to be smart. Others have smart designs. An example of the second type of house won an Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects.
Located on the shore of Sullivan’s Island off the coast of South Carolina, the award-winning cube-shaped beach house was built to replace one smashed to pieces by Hurricane(飓风)Hugo 10 years ago. Before Hugo, many new houses built along South Carolina’s shoreline were poorly constructed, and enforcement of building rules wasn’t strict, according to architect Ray Huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. Soon after Hugo, all new shoreline houses are required to meet stricter, better-enforced rules. The new beach house on Sullivan’s Island should be able to withstand a Level 3 hurricane with peak winds of 179 to 209 kilometers per hour.
At first sight, the house on Sullivan’s Island looks anything but hurricane-proof. Its redwood shell makes it resemble “a large party lantern (灯笼)” at night, according to one observer. But looks can be misleading. The house’s wooden frame is reinforced with long steel rods to give it extra strength.
To further protect the house from hurricane damage. Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings-long, slim wood pieces anchored deep in the sand. Pilings might appear insecure, but they are strong enough to support the weight of the house. They also raise the house above storm waves. The pilings allow the waves to run under the house instead of running into it. ‘These waves come ashore at terrible speeds and cause most of the damage done to beach-front buildings,” said Huff.
Huff designed the timber pilings to be partially hidden by the house’s ground-to-roof shell. “The shell masks the pilings so that the house doesn’t look like it’s standing with its pant legs (裤腿) pulled up,” said Huff. In the event of a storm, the shell should break apart and let the waves rush under the house, the architect explained.
32.After the Hurricane Hugo, new houses built along South Carolina’s shore line are required .
A.to be easily reinforced B.to meet stricter building standards
C.to look smarter in design D.to be designed in the shape of cubes
33.Why is the award-winning beach house strong and hurricane-proof?
A.It is in the shape of a shell. B.It is made of redwood.
C.It is strengthened by steel rods. D.It is built with timber and concrete.
34.What’s the purpose of Huff raising the house 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings?
A.To anchor stronger pilings deep in the sand.
B.To prevent water from rushing into the house.
C.To withstand peak winds of about 200 km/hr.
D.To make the house look more hurricane-proof.
35.According the last paragraph, the main function of the shell is .
A.to give the house a better appearance
B.to strengthen the pilings of the house
C.to protect the wooden frame of the house
D.to slow down the speed of the big waves

With 17 million residents and 23 million bicycles, the Netherlands already has more bikes than people. 36 .
The Dutch government recently announced that it will invest $ 390 million in cycling infrastructure to get 200,000 more people commuting(通勤)by bike in three years’ time. Fifteen routes will be developed into “cyclist freeways”,25,000 bike parking spaces will be created and more than 60 bike storage facilities will be upgraded.
“ 37 ,”says Stientje van Veldhoven, state secretary for that department, who is spearheading the project.

39 .The Netherlands currently rewards commuting cyclists with tax credits of $0.22 per kilometer. Companies and employees would agree on the distance of a person’s cycling route.
However, this is currently a little—known benefit not supported by many employers, according to the infrastructure ministry. That’s something the government is hoping to change by better promoting the scheme and getting more companies on board. 40 .The government is urging employers to provide better facilities for commuting cyclists, such as showers at the office, according to the ministry.

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
Dear David,
I’m happy to hear from you. As for what I have experienced during the winter holiday, here’s something I’d like to share with you.
When travelling with my parents on a customized tour, I’m amazed at the changes and convenience brought by artificial intelligence. Wherever and whenever we went, we could use mobile payment. More interestingly, unlike the previous years when we had to get into tourist attractions with the ID card, we did it through a face recognition app, which really saved time. What an amazing experience!
I do hope you can come to China and experience all of this when you have spare time. Looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua
