(2022·西藏拉萨·拉萨中学校考一模)One day, Vinod Menon, the head of the physics department at the City College of New York, who had to face the unpleasant task of going through almost a year of COVID-lockdown office mail, opened a 9-month-old package, only to find it contained $180,000.
Piled notes in 50s and 100s wrapped in paper bands, a letter, and a return address to an alias were all that accompanied the parcel addressed to “Head of the Physics Department.” “I’ve never seen this kind of money in real life in cash form except in movies,” Menon told CNN. “That really floored me, so I just did not know how to react.”
The sender evidently had unshakable faith in the US postal system, and desired to send the cash to poor students looking to pursue physics and other sciences. City College of New York is one of the most-productive public university systems, and the physics department is particularly outstanding. Three Nobelists in physics received their education there, and in 1921 Albert Einstein gave one of his first lectures at the campus.
“Assuming that you are a bit curious as to why I am doing this, the reason is straightforward,” the letter read, continuing to explain that its writer had, many years ago, taken advantage of the “excellent educational opportunity” available at City College to study physics, earn a master’s, and pursue a “long, productive, rewarding scientific career.”
The alias return address was to Kyle Paisley, a name absent from the university’s graduation logs, at a house in Pensacola, Florida, whose owners apparently had no idea of the donation. After a two-month long investigation revealing nothing linking the money to criminal activity, the Board of Trustees held a vote and decided to keep the money. Dr Menon noted that the gift would provide for two fully-funded scholarships every year for a decade.
1.How did Vinod Menon most likely feel when seeing the cash?
    A.Shocked. B.Ashamed. C.Worried. D.Excited.
2.Why was Albert Einstein mentioned in the text?
    A.To introduce Einstein’s achievements.
B.To prove that it is not easy to win a Nobel Prize.
C.To show the excellence of the physics department.
D.To tell that Einstein received education in the physics department.
3.Which words can best describe the writer of the letter?
A.Generous and grateful. B.Athletic and cautious.
C.Brave and professional. D.Cooperative and caring.
4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The writer of the letter was eventually found.
B.Dr Menon was in charge of keeping the money.
C.The school was careful when handling the money.
D.Kyle Paisley is a graduate of the physics department.

(2022秋·云南昆明·高三昆明市第三中学校考一模)When I was a young man, I had a big ego (自负) and very little empathy (同理心). I thought I knew everything. I looked forward to fame and success. I can even remember arrogantly(自大地) telling one of my friends in college: “If only everyone listened to me, they would all be happy.” I finally left school, ready to take on the world. Little did I know the world was about to take on me.
In the years following college, instead of success, I found struggles. I had trouble finding work. The jobs I did work at were either temporary or back-breaking and none of them paid well. When my wife and I had children, we were shocked to learn that not one but both of our sons had autism (自闭症) and would need to be taken care of for the rest of their lives. I had no idea why this had happened to us and I was very angry with the world.
In time, however, I began to change. My formerly big ego was shrinking fast and my empathy was beginning to grow. Instead of finding joy in success, I found it in moments of love. Playing and laughing with my sons brought me so much happiness. My boys taught me more about peace, patience, kindness, joy, and unconditional love than I could have ever learned on my own. I began to share the lessons I learned through my writing and my life.
I finally realized that my purpose in this world had nothing to do with fame or success and everything to do with allowing love and light into my life and sharing it with everyone I could.

David Rees runs a very distinctive business. He charges customers $15 to sharpen their pencils to perfection, using a variety of tools.
I know what you’re thinking—is this a joke? The 39-year-old gets asked that question a lot. To clarify everything, he even created a special section on his website telling everyone he’s actually providing a real service.
You can supply your own pencil or you can have Rees sharpen one of his own favorite 2B pencils. After that, he mails it to you in a display tube with the shavings in a separate bag, and an authentic certificate which just happens to mention the pencil is so sharp as to be a dangerous object.
To achieve the desired result, the master sharpener uses all kinds of tools, including general sandpaper, pocket knives and even a special $ 450 sharpening machine. “It depends on what the customer wants to use his/her pencil for,” he says. That determines the most appropriate pencil-sharpening technique. Some customers buy pencils as inspirational symbols while others buy them because of their special memories of classic 2B pencils.
$15 to have a pencil sharpened is a bit expensive though, right? You’re not the only one who feels that way, and David’s unique business has really angered lots of people, who talk of inequality in America, saying it is so insane for the wealthy to pay $15 to sharpen a pencil. But others will say, “This is just our urge to put an end to the welfare state because new ideas arise along with the business.”
David admits his trade is sort of unusual. But there are those who actually value his service, as is proven by the over 500 orders he has gotten.

(2023·四川成都·统考一模)Steph Clemence always intended to go to college. But life tends to throw barriers in the way. Her mother remarried several times. By the time she was a senior in high school, Steph had lived in 25 places. Her stepfather died in a car accident, leaving her mother to support three daughters on a modest income. Paying for college became out of the question.
One afternoon, Dorothy Clarks, her English teacher, walked into the classroom, handing out a paper sheet titled “Mrs. Clark’s Book List”, and said, “Some of you might not go on to higher education, but you can continue to learn.” She created a list of 153 fiction and nonfiction books, covering science, history, economics, politics, and literature. It would, she believed, form the equivalent(等同)of two years at a liberal arts college.
So she began in 1970. Starting at the top, Steph would read every book in the order they appeared. Each of those books fueled her passion to learn more about the person, subject matter, or time in history. Unlike many people who open a book in bed before it’s time to sleep, Steph prefers to read while sitting in a chair with a cup of coffee by her side. She doesn’t race through a book, as she wants to savor the experience.
Now Steph is 70 and she never did get to college. But she has only four books left to read from the list. She expects to complete them sometime in 2023.
In Madame Curie, the author, Eve Curie, writes, “Each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful.” The way Steph sees it, Mrs. Clark felt it was her particular duty to help young students. She wishes she could thank Mrs. Clarks and share with her how reading the works on her list has changed her life. “It was never just a list I got from some teacher in school. It’s always been Mrs. Clark’s Book List,” says Steph.
17.What made a barrier to Steph going to college?
    A.Her family’s frequent move.

(2022秋·黑龙江哈尔滨·高三哈尔滨三中校考一模)Eradajere Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution to two of our country’s persistent problems: garbage and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than toss your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.
Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from Doritos, Lay’s, and other favorites at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they sanitize (消毒)the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use padding and liners from old coats to line the insides.
It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof, lightweight, and easy to carry around, ” Oleita told the Detroit News. Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800, 000 chip bags and, as of last December, created 110 sleeping bags.
Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Oleita-whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life-and her fellow volunteers. “We are devoted to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally, ” she said.
And, of course, there’s the symbolism of recycling bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty often go hand in hand. As Oleita said, “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.

Proscia drove nearly six hours on Saturday night to northeast Pennsylvania to drop off a set of car keys that customer Diana Chong left in his shop that morning before she headed to a Friendsgiving celebration near Scranton.
Chong left her keys near the front counter before returning to her SUV to begin the family’s 185-mile trip to Honesdale, Pennsylvania, where they were meeting childhood friends for a pre-Thanksgiving celebration. Her SUV has an automatic start device that allows the vehicle to continue running without keys but the SUV is needed to restart once it’s turned off. Luckily, the Chongs never shut the engine off during the long drive, saving them from potentially being stranded at a highway rest stop. But panic set in when they arrived in Honesdale and searched for the keys.
Diana Chong reached Proscia, who offered to ship the keys to her overnight. But Proscia could not find a delivery service open on Sunday or capable of sending them to her before Monday. (2023春·河南南阳·高三南阳中学校考一模)A few years ago, at a medical laboratory clinic in Waterloo, an elderly woman sat on the edge of a waiting room chair singing the tune “My Heart Will Go On”. With little effort, she sent her sweet voice exploding into every comer of the clinic.
I was there with my father when the woman arrived. She settled into the seat directly across from my father. Because she was so tiny, she had to sit on the edge of the chair so her feet could touch the floor. It seemed as though she was sitting forward to start a conversation with him. I was concerned about how my father would react to the possible invasion of his space. He was 77 and had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years. Since Alzheimers has a tendency to destroy a person’s patience, Dad had had a few challenging experiences in the past. I couldn’t help but think that this woman was playing with fire.
Her singing began gently. My father was staring right at her. I couldn’t read his expression, but it seemed to be something like confusion. I wondered whether he was actually looking at her or if he was lost somewhere deep in his mind. Or maybe he was trying to discover whether this was someone he should know. That was what was happening now: no polite smile, no friendly nod. Just a stare. This lack of important acknowledgment didn’t deter the little woman one bit and her singing slowly got louder. Getting to the chorus, she was totally lost in her own singing with her eyes shut.
Still, I watched for any signs of an outburst of anger. But he didn’t show any signs of an explosion. Instead, his face softened and he was starting to look entertained. When her song ended, the woman opened her eyes. My dad was still looking directly at her. ‘‘That was beautiful,” he said. And she smiled and said, “Thank you.”
37.Why did the author worry about the woman’s sitting opposite?
A.Her father might lose his privacy.
B.Her father was likely to get annoyed.
C.Her father could be reminded of the past.
D.Her father had no patience with strangers.
38.What does the underlined word “deter” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A.Panic. B.Confuse. C.Surprise. D.Discourage.
39.How did the author find her father’s final behaviour?
    A.Typical. B.Awkward. C.Unexpected. D.Unacceptable.
40.What is the best title for the text?
    A.A song awakens my father
    B.Music is the best medicine
    C.A tune draws people closer
    D.Classics will always live on

以及最后一段中的“But there are those who actually value his service, as is proven by the over 500 orders he has gotten.”(但也有一些人真正重视他的服务,这从他获得的500多份订单就可以证明。)

根据第五段“Chusovitina represented Germany for the final time at the 2012 Olympics, and she has been competing for Uzbekistan ever since.”(丘索维金娜在2012年奥运会上最后一次代表德国参赛,从那以后她就一直代表乌兹别克斯坦参赛。)

根据第一段的最后两句话“Her stepfather died in a car accident, leaving her mother to support three daughters on a modest income. Paying for college became out of the question.(她的继父死于一场车祸,留下她的母亲靠微薄的收入养活三个女儿。支付大学学费成了不可能的事)”可知,阻止斯蒂芬上大学的是她家里的经济条件。故选C项。
    18.词义猜测题。根据上文的内容“She doesn’t race through a book(她不会匆匆读完一本书)”和划线单词后面的the experience可知,斯蒂芬想享受读书的这种体验,所以“savor”一词为“享受”的意思。故选D项。
19.细节理解题。根据最后一段的句子“The way Steph sees it, Mrs. Clark felt it was her particular duty to help young students. She wishes she could thank Mrs. Clarks and share with her how reading the works on her list has changed her life.(在斯蒂芬看来,克拉克老师觉得帮助年轻学生是她的特殊责任。她希望能够感谢克拉克老师,并与她分享阅读清单上的作品是如何改变她的生活的)”可知,克拉克老师所给的书单反映了她的社会责任感。故选C项。
    20.推理判断题。因为家里的经济条件不允许,斯蒂芬一直没有上大学,但是她却一直按照老师所给的书单坚持阅读,并且就要读完老师给她推荐的153本书。由此可推断出斯蒂芬是一个有上进心的、积极主动的人。故选B项。

22.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Just a year ago, she found out that two young brothers, with visual impairments, wanted to be an athlete. But Jia could only help them attend a local special education school. The experience made her realize these children living in remote areas may have little knowledge of special education. As a result, she decided to become more involved with special education.
根据第五段“Jia founded a massage shop and employed 16 visually impaired people, with an average monthly salary of 3500 yuan per person.(贾开了一家按摩店,雇佣了16名视障人士,每人平均月薪3500元)”可知,贾君婷仙为残疾人提供工作,以此来改善他们的生活。故选A项。
根据第五段“Jia also has paid close attention to the rights and interests of disabled people. In 2021, Jia proposed the construction of audible traffic signals for blind people. Her advice to local authorities on dog management has resulted in more indoor public places allowing the disabled to enter with their assistance dogs. Jia founded a massage shop and employed 16 visually impaired people, with an average monthly salary of 3500 yuan per person.(贾还密切关注残疾人的权益。

根据第二段“Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from Doritos, Lay’s, and other favorites at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they sanitize (消毒)the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use padding and liners from old coats to line the insides.(薯条爱好者将他们来自Doritos、Lay’s和其他受欢迎的品牌的空包装送到底特律的两个地方:一家印刷店和一家服装店,Oleita和她的志愿者在那里收集空包装。在用肥皂热水清洗消毒薯条包装后,他们将其切开,平放,然后将其熨在一起。他们用旧外套的填充物和衬里来填充内部)”可知,本段主要讲述了他们是如何收集并制作睡袋的。故选A项。
根据第三段“It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags(缝一个睡袋大约需要四个小时,每个睡袋大约需要150到300个薯条包装)”以及“Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and, as of last December, created 110 sleeping bags.(自2020年启动以来,薯条包装项目已经收集了80多万个薯条包装,截至去年12月,已经制作了110个睡袋)”可知,这一项目收集了非常多薯条包装,每150到300个薯条包装能制成一个睡袋,并且缝制一个睡袋需要大约四个小时,所以这些数字显示出制作睡袋需要付出很多努力。故选C项。
根据最后一段“And, of course, there’s the symbolism of recycling bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless.(当然,还有回收薯条包装的象征意义,用这些否则就会被扔进垃圾桶里的薯条包装袋来帮助无家可归的人)”可知,薯条包装袋一般被当做垃圾,志愿者制作睡袋而不是简单地购买睡袋,是为了通过回收垃圾来帮助无家可归的人。故选C项。
根据最后一段“It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty often go hand in hand. As Oleita said, ‘I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.’(这有力地提醒我们,环境不公和贫困往往是同时存在的。正如奥列塔所说,‘我认为是时候展示所有这些问题之间的联系了’)”可知,环境不公和贫困通常同时存在,密切相关。故选D项。

    【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了来自台湾的学生Chen Wencheng在疫情期间做志愿者,为保护他在北京的社区发挥了关键作用。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Chen Wencheng from Taiwan, a postdoctoral student at Peking University, had been doing volunteer work in his neighborhood since Spring Festival. (来自台湾的Chen Wencheng是北京大学的一名博士后,他从春节开始就在小区里做志愿者工作。)”以及最后一段中“The volunteer job looks like petty work, but it matters as it enhances the safety of the more than 2, 000 residents in our community.(这项志愿工作看起来很琐碎,但它很重要,因为它加强了我们社区2000多名居民的安全。)”
划线词句前文“The buildings in the community have five floors with no elevators. Chen sometimes had dozens of deliveries each day, including big rice bags and barrels of cooking oil, among other daily supplies. (这个社区的建筑有五层,没有电梯。Chen有时每天要送几十件东西,包括大饭袋和桶装食用油,以及其他日常用品。)”说明Chen每天需要爬楼梯运送几十件沉重的东西,从而推知划线词句“Those were heavy, and that’s why the community needed us younger people to help. (Those很沉重,这就是为什么社区需要我们这些年轻人的帮助。)”其中Those指代“那些递送的东西”。故选A项。
根据第三段中“After the COVID- 19 outbreak hit Beijing in late January, he soon applied to be a community volunteer to help with pandemic prevention and control. (今年1月底,新冠肺炎疫情在北京爆发后,他很快就申请成为一名社区志愿者,帮助防控疫情。)”以及最后一段中“The volunteer job looks like petty work, but it matters as it enhances the safety of the more than 2, 000 residents in our community.(志愿者工作看起来很琐碎,但它很重要,因为它能提高我们社区2000多名居民的安全。)” 故选A项。
通读全文,根据最后一段中“The volunteer job looks like petty work, but it matters as it enhances the safety of the more than 2, 000 residents in our community. (这项志愿工作看起来很琐碎,但它很重要,因为它加强了我们社区2000多名居民的安全。)”以及“The work also allowed me to get to know more of my neighbors, which makes the whole community feel like a big family. (这份工作也让我结识了更多的邻居,这让整个社区感觉像一个大家庭。)”可知,本文目的是为了介绍真正的志愿服务精神。故选C项。

    【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了文森特·普罗夏是中岛一家百吉饼店的员工,周六,当一位顾客不小心把车钥匙留在店里时,他做出了最好的善举,驱车6个小时把钥匙送给顾客。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段“Proscia drove nearly six hours on Saturday night to northeast Pennsylvania to drop off a set of car keys that customer Diana Chong left in his shop that morning before she headed to a Friendsgiving celebration near Scranton.(周六晚上,普罗夏开了近6个小时的车,来到宾夕法尼亚州东北部,把顾客戴安娜·钟当天早上落在他店里的一串车钥匙,在她去斯克兰顿附近参加“朋友节感恩节”的庆祝活动前交给她。)”
根据划线词前文“Her SUV has an automatic start device that allows the vehicle to continue running without keys but the SUV is needed to restart once it’s turned off. Luckily, the Chongs never shut the engine off during the long drive, (她的SUV有一个自动启动装置,可以让车辆在没有钥匙的情况下继续运行,但一旦SUV被关闭,就需要重新启动。幸运的是,在漫长的驾驶过程中,钟一家从未关闭引擎,)”可知,正是因为引擎未关闭,这使他们避免了被困在高速公路休息站的可能。所以stranded为“使陷于困境”之意。故选D。
35.细节理解题。根据第四段“Diana Chong reached Proscia, who offered to ship the keys to her overnight. But Proscia could not find a delivery service open on Sunday or capable of sending them to her before Monday. (戴安娜·钟找到了普罗夏,他提出连夜将钥匙寄给她。但普罗夏找不到周日开放的快递服务,也找不到能在周一之前把它们送到她手里的快递服务。)”可知,当钟与普罗夏取得联系时,他的第一反应是寻找快递服务。故选C。
36.推理判断题。根据第一段“Vinny Proscia, 41, who works at Bagels 101 on Middle Country Road, has won praise for an unusual act of kindness to a family he hardly knew. (41岁的文森特·普罗夏在中岛一家百吉饼店101工作,他对一个几乎不认识的家庭做出了不寻常的善举,赢得了赞誉。)”第四段“That’s when Proscia, who had been working since 5 a.m., stepped up, telling his wife, Renee, that he was taking a road trip to Pennsylvania.(这时,从早上5点就开始工作的普罗夏挺身而出,告诉他的妻子蕾妮(,他要去宾夕法尼亚州自驾游。)” 故选A。

根据第二段中“I was concerned about how my father would react to the possible invasion of his space. He was 77 and had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years.  Since Alzheimers has a tendency to destroy a person’s patience, Dad had had a few challenging experiences in the past. I couldn’t help but think that this woman was playing with fire. (我很担心父亲对我可能侵犯他的私人空间会作何反应。他今年77岁,患有阿尔茨海默病已有多年。由于阿尔茨海默症会摧毁一个人的耐心,爸爸过去有过一些具有挑战性的经历。我不禁觉得这个女人是在玩火)”可知,作者担心父亲会如何应对可能侵犯他的空间的行为。因为患阿尔茨海默病,父亲有些缺乏耐心,过去与他人也有过一些不愉快的经历。再结合最后一段中的“Still, I watched for any signs of an outburst of anger. (尽管如此,我还是留意着任何愤怒爆发的迹象)”可推知,作者担心父亲会因这位女士坐在对面而生气。故选B项。
38.词句猜测题。根据划线词前的“no polite smile, no friendly nod. Just a stare. This lack of important acknowledgment didn’t(没有礼貌的微笑,没有友好的点头。只是看了一眼。这种缺乏重要的承认没有)”以及划线词后的“and her singing slowly got louder. (她的歌声慢慢地提高了)”可知,父亲的盯视一点也没有阻止这位女士的歌唱,她的歌声慢慢变大。由此可知,deter 的含义应是“使不做,阻止”,discourage“阻止,劝阻,打消……的念头”与之含义相近。故选D项。
39.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Still, I watched for any signs of an outburst of anger. But he didn’t show any signs of an explosion. Instead, his face softened and he was starting to look entertained. (尽管如此,我还是留意着任何愤怒爆发的迹象。但他没有任何爆炸的迹象。相反,他的脸色变得柔和起来,开始显得很开心)”及“That was beautiful,’ he said.
A song awakens my father“一首歌唤醒了父亲”作本文标题最佳。故选A项。
