Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave properly in different situations around the world.
Most travelers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway. And if you’re travelling in Thailand, never touch people’s heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new people, they like giving business cards—but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
In most countries in Europe, people expect a lot of eye contact (交流) when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries, a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. In South America, people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA, you need to give people more personal space. Also, it’s rude to interrupt (打断) Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in China, you can leave a bit of food on your plate, and it’s OK to start smoking before other people finish eating, but you mustn’t do these things in the UK. When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that’s bad luck.
With so much to think about, it’s not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home!

As a Chinese American student, I have much to say about the value differences between the two countries.
American kids love to make money by themselves.Chinese kids always ask for money from their parents. So American kids spend more than they have but Chinese kids spend less money, and they have money left in the bank.
American parents think going to an expensive but famous college is useless.Chinese parents would do anything to send their children to good colleges even if it means that they have to sell everything they own.
American girls always take part in sports, dancing and singing groups while Chinese girls always go to art or music groups. In these groups, American students think that B is a gift while Chinese students think that B is a death sentence(死刑).
American parents allow their daughters or sons to go out with their boyfriends or girlfriends as long as they come home at certain time.Chinese students aren’t allowed to do so in middle or high school.
American parents support and encourage their children at all times while Chinese parents think that criticism (批评)is best for children in the world. So American parents only look at their children’s good side.Chinese parents seem to only see their Children’s bad side.

In the 1930s, a young traveler was climbing the French Alps(阿尔卑斯山). He arrived at a big piece of land without living things. It was ugly. It was the kind of place you hurried away from.
Then, suddenly, the young traveler stopped on the way. In the middle of this large land there was an old man. On his back was a bag of seeds. He dug a hole in the ground. Then from the bag he took a seed and put it in the hole. He did this again and again. Later, the old man told the traveler, “I’ve planted over 10, 000 seeds. Perhaps only a tenth of them will grow.” The old man’s wife and son had died, and this was how he chose to spend his final years. “ I want to do something useful to make a difference,” he said.
Twenty years later, the traveler was not young any longer. He returned to the place. What he saw amazed him. He could not believe his eyes. The land was covered with a beautiful forest two miles wide and five miles long. Birds were singing, animals were playing, and wild flowers were here and there. The traveler stood there remembering the lifeless picture of the place that it once used to be. A beautiful forest stood there now, all because someone cared.

Since NASA’s Viking Task tested Martian soil back in the 1970s, we’ve known that Mars (火星) is covered with a desert—harmful to life as we know it. But since tasks to Mars paid attention to what lies under the desert, a different picture has started to appear.
This discovery of water under the Mars’ South Pole is the result of radar echoes (雷达回波) that were picked up by an instrument on a spaceship that’s been moving around Mars for 15 years. To stay liquid (液体) under the long-frozen desert of Mars, the researchers say this lake must have a lot of salts mixed in it.
It is very cold and saltiness would make it a very hard environment for any living thing. But the lead researcher, Professor Roberto Orosei from the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, said it was not impossible for things to live there.
To search for life in this newly discovered lake, scientists will need to send a robot that’s able to make a hole through the mile of ice covering it. But at least the teams looking for life on Mars will now know where to start their search.

I am an Inuit boy named Kayla. Inuit are the people who live in cold Arctic (北极的) lands. In my language, Inuit means “the people”. Some people used to call my people Eskimos. We wish to be called Inuit.
I live with my mother, father and two brothers. We live at the most northern part of the world. It is made up of the Arctic Ocean and the land all around it. For months the sea is covered with thick ice. The land is covered with snow and ice most of the year, too.
Winter is long and very cold. It lasts from October to March. It is dark twenty-four hours a day. The sun does not come up to warm the water and land. When the north winds blow, it is even colder. There are days when the temperature is 50°F below zero. My family is prepared. We wear watertight (防水鞋). We put on many layers (层) of clothes. Outside we always wear a thick warm jacket that has fur inside. I’m not afraid of the cold winters. I guess I’m just used to them.

The colorful clothes we wear today are made by machines. But what did ancient people do if they wanted to wear something colorful? Tie-dye(扎染)was a way to do this.
More than 1,000 years ago, the Bai people in Yunnan used tie-dye to dye their clothes. Then this skill became so popular that people gave tie-dye clothes to the emperor as gifts.
To tie-dye, you need to first use tools to tie, sew(缝制), or clip(夹住)your cloth(布料). The folded cloth is then put in dye. The Bai people usually make blue dye from a plant.
As the cloth is folded, some parts become dark blue, while other parts have a lighter color. When you unfold the cloth, you will see beautiful patterns.
In the 1960s, tie-dye became a fashion trend in the US. People tie-dyed T-shirts and jeans in imaginative ways. Many children in the US still learn tie-dye in their art classes.

It is believed that there are about 25, 000 polar bears left. Polar bears spend most of their lives on the ice that covers the Arctic Ocean.
Polar bears depend on ice to hunt. In winter, they eat as much as possible to store up energy. But these days there’s less winter ice, meaning the bears have less area for hunting.

My 5-year-old daughter, Alice, likes painting very much. I think she might be a great artist someday.
Last Sunday, I taught her to paint at home. She was very happy when she put her brush into the paint quickly, and then into a bowl of water. Soon most of the paint on the brush just disappeared in the water. I got angry and shouted, “What are you doing? This is not what you are supposed to do!”
But she was so excited that she still did what she liked. She had so much fun painting in her own way. Soon, the paint was everywhere and the room became very dirty. I just sat there, thinking, “Oh, my God! This girl is hopeless.” Soon after, she shouted, “Mum, when I mix pink and blue, the water turns purple(紫色)!”
I was surprised. I thought that she was just wasting the paint and the paper, but she actually got something new! I laughed and thought she made that just by chance.
Suddenly, I got another idea—maybe I could teach her something about colors. So I began to work on my computer. Seeing this, she got happier and wanted to try it by herself. She started to mess with buttons(胡乱摆弄按钮), and I almost got mad.
But at that time, she found something new once again! She just told me, “I pressed(按)this, and I pressed that, and then this happened.” How could I imagine that I would end up learning things from a kid!

Nowadays we use apps (应用软件) to order food, learn English and shop online. But have you ever imagined that we could deal with garbage by using an app?
Dou Zheng, 15, a student in Beijing designed such an app. People can sell recyclable waste like bottles to garbage collectors. Just like ordering food, people can simply make an order on the app and enjoy door-to-door service. The idea for her app came from a real-life experience. On her way home, she always saw roads that were blocked because of garbage collectors. “There are lots of water bottles on the roads. It’s a complete mess.” she said. After doing research on surrounding communities, she found that the answer to the problem was to change the way people and garbage collectors trade.
Last summer holiday, she ordered a lot of food many times. That gave her the idea to design the app. To prove that it would work, she did surveys on Wechat and in the streets. The results showed that eight out of ten people thought the idea was good. However, she didn’t know how to program apps. She read many books and watched videos to learn about programming on her own. “It’s hard. I have to know what a number of codes (代码) mean and then write my own.” she said. Later, with the help of an app called AppMakr, she finished it! “This app made designing my app easier.” she said.

The colorful clothes we wear these days are made by machines. But what did ancient people do if they wanted to wear something colorful? Tie-dye (扎染) was away to do this.
More than 1,000 years ago, the Bai ethnic group in Yunnan used tie-dye to dye their clothes. During the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties, this technology became so popular that people gave tie-dyed clothes to the emperor as gifts.
To tie-dye, you need to first use thread (线), rope or other tools to tie, sew (缝), or clip (夹) your cloth together. The folded cloth is then put in dye. The Bai people usually make blue dye from a plant.
As the cloth is folded, some parts become dark blue, while other parts have a lighter color. When you open the cloth, you’ll see beautiful patterns.
In the 1960s, tie-dye became a fashion trend in the US. People tie-dyed T-shirts and jeans in imaginative ways. Many children in the US still learn tie-dye in their art classes.
At Dior’s spring 2019 show, Italian designer Maria Grazia Chiuri surprised people with a series of tie-dye dresses. Chiuri said, “Its creative process is a sort of unpredictable performance, right until the very end. It’s a surprise.” It seems that the tie-dye trend has never really gone away.
