VI.阅读理解
A
What is art? That’s an easy question to answer. Art is a painting,a drawing or a sculpture. Now there are new items to add to the list.
A new group of young artists began to produce works that challenged the accepted idea of what art is and the role an artist should play in society. This group came to be known as the YBAs—the Young British Artists. The art of the YBAs does not just stick to painting and sculpture. It uses all kinds of different materials to express the feelings of the artists.
Damien Hirst is the most famous of the YBAs. The shark in the box is his work and is meant to express his own fear of dying. The shark stands for death. Right now,it is harmless. But eventually it will come for you. There is nothing to be done about it.
Traditionally, artists have a message. They use their skills to lead us to enlightenment(启迪). The message of the YBAs is that they cannot do this. They are just as mixed up and confused as everybody else. A journalist once asked Damien Hirst what his next idea was for an artwork.“I don’t know what I’m going to do next. I never know what I’m going to do next,”he replied.
Another YBA,Tracy Emin recently produced a work called Bed. This is just her own bed with the sheets disarranged and dirty. And the message? “Look at me—I’m a mess.”
Some artists work with the public in producing their works. Gillian Wearing filmed a group of people dressed as policemen trying to keep still for 60 minutes while standing on top of a table. At the end of that time, the table falls apart and everyone falls to the floor. You can try to be a good citizen and a respectable member of the community. But don’t try too hard or the pressure will be too much.
Art mirrors the state of society. In the works of the YBAs we can see a society on the threshold(开端) of the future—a bit worried,a bit excited and wondering what is going to happen next. The YBAs can’t guide us,but they can make the journey more interesting.
1. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The shark. B. Death.
C. Damien’s artwork. D. Damien’s fear of dying.
2. What can be inferred from Tracy’s work Bed?
A. She needs to be taken care of. B. She sees the world as a dirty one.
C. She compares herself to the bed. D. She hopes for better living conditions.
3. Which of the following refers to a person who tries too hard in Gillian’s work?
A. The table. B. The floor.
C. 60 minutes. D. The people dressed as policemen.
4. What is the main purpose of the text?

C. To describe the YBAs as artists full of imagination.
D. To show the YBAs have made a great difference in art.

Leonardo da Vinci died 500 years ago at the age of 67. He was a universal genius who always enjoyed exploring ideas in many fields, including sculpting, drawing and painting.
His surviving body of work as a painter is remarkably slim:Fewer than 20 artworks can be comfortably regarded as his, although two of them—the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper— are easily among the most famous in the world. The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne,St. John the Baptist and the Mona Lisa now all hang at the Louvre in Paris. The French museum has two more Leonardos—one of which is currently lent to the Louvre Abu Dhabi—forming the largest collection in the world. Building on its collection, the Louvre will host a grand exhibition, starting in October, which it hopes will unite the largest ever number of Leonardo artworks under one roof. Organizers anticipate so much demand that a reservation will be required to attend, and tickets will go on sale in June.
Celebrations are already underway in Italy. Leonardo’s hometown of Vinci is hosting a special exhibition featuring his earliest known drawing. In Milan, where Leonardo lived for over 20 years, celebrations will center around the Sfbrza Castle and the restored Sala delle Asse, where visitors can see original wall and ceiling decorations by Leonardo. In Venice, his famous drawing the Vitruvian Man,will be on display until July—a rare occurrence,as the item’s fragility means it’s seldom exhibited.
In London, visitors will be able to see over 200 original drawings at the“Leonardo da Vinci: Life in drawing”exhibition, which will open at Buckingham Palace on May 24. Organizers say this will be the largest exhibition of Leonardo’s works in over 65 years.
The uncertainty that surrounds so many aspects of Leonardo’s life and works has undoubtedly fueled the world’s fascination with the Renaissance master. Five hundred years on,it seems to be stronger than ever.
5. What does the author think of Leonardo da Vinci?
A. He was bored with art. B. He was curious about things.
C. He was dead despite his achievements. D. He was intelligent in a certain aspect.
6. What can we infer about Leonardo’s artworks from Paragraph 2?
A. The Louvre in Paris has four of his works.
B. Only the Last Supper is regarded as the best.
C. More than 20 works are easily recognized as his.
D. The exhibition in Abu Dhabi may be quite popular.
7. Why is it rare for the Vitruvian Man to be exhibited in Italy?
A. It wasn’t discovered until lately. B. It may be ruined while it is on show.
C. It is Leonardo’s most famous drawing. D. Italy has difficulty renting it for the moment.
8. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Life of Leonardo B. Leonardo’s Artworks
C. Leonardo and the Louvre D. Celebrations for Leonardo
