Check on me
If you’re meeting someone new or going to an unfamiliar destination, you can set a time for us to contact you regularly to make sure you’re OK. You can set a “Check On Me” duration from 30 minutes to over 8 hours and Sonder will use geo-location technology to monitor you.

Peter Kline has run over 100 marathons. But what makes him so remarkable is that he has finished 45 of those marathons while pushing young people with disabilities in front of him. Kline wants them to know the joy of running, too.
Kline started hitting the road when he was in his early fifties after running a 10K and then he began running marathons. His friend Scott Patrick suffered from a brain cancer, and asked Kline to run to raise money for cancer research. Kline helped Patrick and other volunteers raise about $60,000.
Being able to help others through his beloved sport made an impression. Kline knew of a father and a son who would run races together—the father pushing his son with disabilities as he completed the course. But, he wondered, “What about kids who don’t have a dad to do that?”
After being connected to a woman with two daughters who have cerebral palsy(脑瘫), he decided to run the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon in 2012 with one of the girls. The little girl loved it, and Kline said his mission to share his love of the sports just started rolling.
He has been calling the mission “Marathons with Meaning”. Kline has a business card that says “Marathons with Meaning” and wherever he sees young people with disabilities, he just goes up to the parents and says, “If your kid ever wants to run a marathon, let me know.”
Kline said he paid for everything having to do with the race himself out of his own pocket. “It feels better that way of giving back to society.” The young people he pushes have ranged in ages from 8 to 32 and have many types of disabilities. “They love it,” Kline said. “They absolutely love the sounds, the noises, the feelings. The other runners are always very kind. They give them high-fives.”
24. What causes people to notice Peter Kline?
A. He is a disabled marathon runner.
B. He has run more than 100 marathons.
C. He has helped disabled kids to run marathons.
D. He has accompanied a father and his child to finish a course.

D. By helping a child without father to run in a marathon.
26. What do we know about “Marathons with Meaning”?
A. Kline promotes it every time he has a chance.
B. It is funded by people interested in marathon.
C. It only welcomes disabled children to participate.
D. Kline wishes people to contribute to society trough it.
27. Which of the following can best describe Peter Kine?
A. Generous and caring. B. Honest an responsible.

Many ancient populations used inscriptions (铭文) to document different parts of their lives. But the objects containing such inscriptions have been damaged over the centuries.
The researchers, led by Alphabet’s AI company DeepMind, developed a new AI-based method which serves as a technological tool to help researchers repair missing inscriptions and estimate the true origins of the records. They call their tool Ithaca. The system is the first deep neural network that can restore (修复) the missing text of damaged inscriptions. The researchers said it trained Ithaca on the largest collection of data containing Greek inscriptions from the non-profit Packard Humanities Institute in California. Feeding this data into the system is designed to help the tool use past writings to predict missing letters and words in damaged inscriptions.
The researchers reported that in experiments with damaged writings, Ithaca was able to correctly predict missing inscription elements 62% of the time. In addition, the tool was 71% correct in identifying where the inscriptions first came from. And when historians work on their own, the success rate for restoring damaged inscriptions is about 25%. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72%.
Thea Sommerschield from Ca’Foscari University of Venice said the system had already provided new information to help researchers reexamine important periods in Greek history. In one case, Ithaca confirmed new evidence presented by historians about the dating of a series of important Greek decrees (法令). The decrees were first thought to have been written before 446/445 BCE. But the new evidence suggested a date in the 420s BCE. Ithaca predicted a date of 421 BCE. The date change may seem small but it has significant implications for our understanding of the political history of Classical Athens.
The team is currently working on other versions of Ithaca trained on other ancient languages. DeepMind has launched a free, interactive tool based on the system for use by researchers, educators, museum workers and the public.
28. What is the function of Ithaca?
A. Restoring and identifying damaged inscriptions.
B. Explaining and protecting historical documents.
C. Exploring and tracing the origins of Greek letters.
D. Collecting and translating past writings into English.
29. What do the numbers in paragraph 3 mainly indicate?
A. The inscriptions are of great value to human.
B. Ithaca helps researchers work more effectively.
C. The demand for reading ancient records is increasing.
D. The process of repairing damaged writings is complicated.
30. Why does the author mention the case in paragraph 4?
A. To show the limitations of Ithaca. B. To prove the importance of dates to historians.
C. To explain the history of Greek decrees. D. To support Sommerschield’s statement.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The achievements of Greek historians.
B. The disappearance of ancient Greek culture.
C. An AI system for repairing missing writings.
D. A rising trend of studying ancient languages.

California start-up OpenAI has released a chatbot (chat robot) able to answer a variety of questions, but its impressive performance has reopened the debate on the risks linked to AI technologies.
Posted on Twitter by fascinated users, the conversations with the chatbot called ChatGPT show a kind of omniscient (无所不知的) machine, from explaining scientific concepts to writing scenes for a play, university essays or even functional lines of computer code.
“Its answer to the question ‘what to do if someone has a heart attack’ was incredibly clear and relevant,” Claude de Loupy, an expert in automatic text generation told AFP. “When you start asking very specific questions, ChatGPT’s response can be off the mark, but its overall performance remains ‘really impressive’ with a ‘high level’.” he said.
A few years ago, chatbots had the vocabulary of a dictionary and the memory of a goldfish. Now Chatbots are getting much better at the “history problem” where they act in a manner consistent with the history of responses. The chatbots have graduated from goldfish status.
However, like other programs relying on deep learning, ChatGPT has one major weakness: it doesn’t have access to meaning. The software cannot justify its choices, such as explaining why it picked the words that make up its responses.
AI technologies able to communicate are increasingly worrying some observers. They voice concern that these technologies could be misused to trick people. What does ChatGPT think of the risk? “There are potential dangers in building highly complex chatbots, particularly if they are designed to be indistinguishable from humans in their language and behavior.” the chatbot said.
Open AI CEO Sam Altman shared his ideas on the debates surrounding AI. “Interesting watching people start to debate whether powerful AI systems should behave in the way users want or their creators intend,” he wrote, “The question of whose values we adjust these systems to will be one of the most important debates society ever has.”
32. How does paragraph 2 show ChatGPT’s wonderful performance?
A. By using figures. B. By listing examples.
C. By giving definitions. D. By making comparisons.
33. What does the underlined phrase “off the mark” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Creative. B. Reasonable. C. Immediate. D. Incorrect.
34. What is the major problem with ChatGPT?
A. It has poor memory. B. It has limited vocabularies.
C. It fails to account for its choices. D. It lacks power to stick to its responses.
35. Which statement is Sam Altman most likely to agree with?
A. The value that AI follows remains to be discussed.
B. Advanced AI should go after creators’ intention.
C. The function of AI relies entirely on users.
D. Debates on the application of AI are unnecessary.

A Plastic Ocean is a film to make you think. Think, and then act. We need to take action on our dependence on plastic. We’ve been producing plastic in huge quantities. Drinking bottles, shopping bags and even clothes are made with plastic. 36 What happens to all the rest? This is the question the film A Plastic Ocean answers.
The film begins as a journey to film the largest animal on the planet, the blue whale. But during the journey the filmmakers make the shocking discovery of a huge, thick layer of plastic floating in the Indian Ocean. 37 In total, they visited 20 locations around the world during the four years to make the film.
In the film there are beautiful shots of the seas and marine life. 38 We see how marine species are being killed by all the plastic we are throwing in the ocean. The message about our use of plastic is painfully obvious.
39 In the second half, the filmmakers look at what we can do to deal with the problem. They present short-term and long-term solutions. These include avoiding plastic containers and recycle as much as you can. The filmmakers also stress the need for governments to work more on recycling programmes.
We make a shocking amount of plastic. Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and at least 8 million of those are thrown into the oceans. The results are very harmful, but it isn’t too late to change. 40
A. It has raised public concern all over the world.
B. In conclusion, we only have one earth to live on.
C. But the film doesn’t only show the negative side.
D. These are contrasted with plastic rubbish thrown around.
E. Once you’ve seen the film, you’ll realize it is time to do our part.
F. This causes them to travel globally to look at other affected areas.
G. We live in a world full of plastic, and only a small amount is recycled.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I ran after the train, shouting, “Hey mister, can’t you see me?” It was hopeless, as no conductor is going to slow down for a 60-year-old man who got to the station several minutes late. They absolutely didn’t know how important that day, that train ride was to me! I was on my way to an interview for what could have been the opportunity of a lifetime.
I threw both my hat and my art case down in depression, and sat down on the nearest chair, wiping (擦掉)the sweat from my face and breathing heavily. I would have to wait a whole day for the next train, and by then my appointment with the gallery owner would have given up on me. Perhaps it was for the best. It was, after all, the first time in 40 years anyone had shown such an interest in my art. Maybe if the gallery owner had seen all my paintings, he would have changed his mind about offering me space on his walls.
Disappointment filled my soul. Should I dial the gallery and get an interview on a different day? But Pierre Gianni was the owner of the most well-known gallery in New York City. Why would he give a rare second chance to an elderly nobody when he had the newest, coolest young artists to choose from?
Come to think of it, perhaps these insecurities were the very reason I had never been offered a show before. I was too afraid to try. I found countless excuses not to offer my work up to be seen and perhaps criticized. I told myself it would hurt too much if I failed, but the truth was that I had never tried.
Finally, I gathered all my courage to dial the gallery, only to find my antique cell phone had broken down. It was at the very moment that I was in total despair and decided to go home.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
