Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by nonethat’s because all of Jim’s art is created on an unusual canvas (画布)the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.

Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was walking aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has travelled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.

Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changedall he needs is a stick, a garden rake () and most importantly, his lively imagination!

Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, in search of perfect sand. His latest piece of work was created in the desert sands of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away.

Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named Sandman in 2005. Jim Denevan is not just a sand artist he is also an excellent cook and started an organisation called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose motto (座右铭) is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining (用餐) events are held outdoors on farms with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced.

Contrary (相反的) to the long-held belief that plants in the natural world are always in competition, new research has found that in tough environments adult plants help smaller ones and grow well as a result.

Dr Rocio said “If you’re a seedling (幼苗) in an unproductive landscapethe top of a mountain or a sand hill, for example, and you’re lucky enough to end up underneath a big plant, your chances of survival are certainly better than if you landed somewhere on your own. What we have found , which was surprising , is that an established large plant, called a ‘nurse’, protects a seedling; it also produces more flowers than the same plants of similar large size growing on their own.”

Other benefits of nurse-seedling partnerships include that more variety of plants growing together can have a positive effect on the environment. For example, vegetation areas with nurse plants with more flowers might be able to attract higher numbers of pollinators (传粉者) in an area, in turn supporting insect and soil (土壤) life, and even provide a wider variety of fruit types for birds and other animals.

“The biggest winner for this system of nursing a plant is biodiversity (生物多样性),” Dr Rocio said. “The more biodiverse an area, the greater number of species of plants, insect life, birds and other animals, and the better the chances of long-term healthy functioning of the environment and ecosystems. This system is win-win for adult and seedling plants in difficult environments .

The research is of value to those who manage and protect plants in tough environments. Most home gardeners and farmers plan to ensure their soil and conditions are the best they can be for plant growth, but the findings might be of value to those who garden in unproductive places.

    28. What did people use to think about plants?

     A. They can help each other.       B. They compete with each other.

     C. They grow better without competition.    D. They can’t survive in tough environments.

    29. What will happen to seedling plants if they grow under adult plants?

     A. They will produce more flowers.     B. They will benefit from adult plants.

     C. They won’t survive due to competition.    D. They will slow down adult plants’ growth.

    30. What do we know about the nurse-seedling partnership?

     A. It is good for the ecosystem.      B. It needs more nutritious soil.

     C. It requires larger living space.      D. It may have a bad effect on animals.

    31. Who might find the research useful?

     A. People studying animal behaviour.   B. People managing productive farm land.

     C. People protecting plants on sand hills.  D. People wanting to change soil conditions.

Once you are on the ground of a different country, remain highly sensitive to native behavior.

40    And don’t feel offended if something seems offensivelike queue jumping. After all, this is a global village, and we are all very different.
