The idea f climbing Everest disgusted me. The muntain came t represent the ppsite f everything that I lved and respected abut climbing. What had nce been the final muntain climbing gal became the fcus f a cmmercial guiding industry. Over the years, the crwds at Base Camp grew, leaving behind tns f trash. That’s prbably where my persnal Everest stry wuld have ended, were it nt fr an ld friend and his bsessin (执念) with ne f the greatest mysteries. In 1999, Thm Pllard began t explre and fund the remains f Gerge Mallry, the celebrated British climber wh disappeared while attempting t be the first t climb Everest. But Mallry’s partner, Sandy Irvine, and the camera he had likely carried, were nt fund. The muntain climbing wrld has been wndering whether they might have reached the tp in 1924.
Pllard’s stry mved me. I began t pack fr the climb and expected that ur advanced equipment wuld make it manageable, perhaps easy. I was wrng. On the highest pint n the planet, I was mre tired than I’d ever been in any climbing. Alng the way, I cntinuusly tipped my hat, nt just t Mallry and Irvine but t anyne wh has the drive t push himself r herself up this rute. My search was in vain, but I began t recnsider Everest.
I witnessed many climbers, wh were much mre than just self-centered turists. We shared rute infrmatin, weather frecasts, and family phts — all united arund cmmn gals.
I went t Everest t seek Irvine. But in the end, I fund smething mre difficult t get: the spirit that Irvine and Mallry shared. It was hiding in plain sight, right where it has always been: inside the brave suls wh risk s much t fllw in stried adventurers’ ftsteps up Everest.

China has released the first natinal draft guideline n the use f self-driving vehicles fr public transprt, a key mve in speeding up the large-scale cmmercializatin f autnmus driving technlgy and encuraging lcal authrities t create the relevant management plicies, industry experts said.
The cuntry will encurage the use f self-driving vehicles such as buses in an enclsed Bus Rapid Transit r BRT system, and allw autnmus vehicles t ffer taxi services under simple and relatively cntrllable scenaris (方案). The natinal draft rules n self-driving vehicles are expected t better regulate the whle industry, prviding a reference and guidance fr lcal authrities that have yet t issue similar guidelines.
The draft regulatin classified autnmus vehicles int three types: cnditinally, highly and fully autnmus vehicles, depending n the degree f their autnmus capacity. The guideline said the first tw types shuld have human drivers. Remte drivers r safety supervisrs are essential fr fully autnmus vehicles. In additin, safety shuld be the tp pririty in the management f self-driving vehicles. The guideline als requires that the rutes f autnmus vehicles shuld be far away frm heavily ppulated areas such as schls hspitals and large shpping malls.

The wrld’s biggest electric vehicle — a 45-tn mining dump truck named the eDumper — may have t give up its thrne. The newcmer, pwered with bth electricity and a reserve f hydrgen fuel, is ging t steal that title as the largest electric mining truck.
Lndn-based Angl American is develping the beast f a machine — it weighs 290 tns — as part f its sustainable mining visin. The cnceptual wrk is dne, but U.K-based Williams Advanced Engineering will bring the truck t life. The idea is t replace the vehicle’s diesel engine with a high-pwer mdular lithium-in battery. “We are delighted t be invlved in this innvative and exciting prject which shws the ptential f battery technlgy that can adapt t increased demands, frm autmtive and mtrsprt t ‘heavy duty’ industrial applicatins,” Craig Wilsn, managing directr f Williams Advanced Engineering, said.
While the eDumper — a mining truck used t mve stnes frm the sides f muntains in Switzerland — relies entirely n pure electricity and pure physics fr pwer, the Angl American truck will use bth a lithium-in battery and a hydrgen fuel cell mdule. Altgether, the new truck will have ver 1,000 Kilwatt hurs f energy strage.
Hydrgen fuel is a clean fuel that prduces nly water as a by-prduct when cnsumed in a fuel cell. It’s typically prduced frm natural gas, nuclear pwer, r renewable wind and slar pwer. Adding hydrgen fuel cells t the vehicle’s battery will allw the truck t run fr lnger perids f time withut recharging.
There’s als a third type f pwer that cmes int play with the Angl American truck: kinetic (动力的) energy created thrugh the prcess f regenerative braking . When an electric vehicle — be it the Angl American truck, r the eDumper — rlls dwn a hill, that mvement creates electrical energy fr the battery as yu brake. The electric mtrs pwer the car thrugh the battery’s stred energy, but can als becme mini generatrs that return sme energy back t the battery.
After Angl American finishes test trials with the truck, the firm will cnduct studies t understand hw the truck’s pwer units can be used t prvide energy strage in ther applicatins.
    12. What can be knwn abut “the eDumper”?
    A. It weighs mre than 290 tns. B. It is pwered by hydrgen fuel.
    C. It will n lnger be the largest electric truck. D. It will discurage buyers fr being expensive.
    13. What can be inferred frm Craig Wilsn’s wrds?
    A. Battery technlgy is the key t updating vehicles.
    B. Battery technlgy is the basis f manufacturing trucks.
    C. The develpment f the lithium-in battery is limited.
    D. The future f the lithium-in battery is prmising.
    14. What is the benefit f adpting hydrgen fuel cells?
    A. It can save a lt f mney. B. Vehicles becme mre ec-friendly.
    C. It has n envirnmental impact at all. D. Vehicles n lnger need t be recharged.
    15. Accrding t paragraph 5, which f the fllwing can be a feature f regenerative braking?
    A. Autnmus braking. B. Energy transfrmatin.
    C. Simple peratin. D. zer-carbn emissin.
