What will that number be in 2022if people can't travel freely to other countries because of COVID-19?Somepeople say they have more time and a greater interest in nature and the world that's closer to them. How does it feel when someone listens to you without stopping or giving their opinion? This is called active listening and it's a great way to understand other people's feelings and build trust between friends.
    >The meaning of active listening
Active listening means trying to understand how someone feels by listening carefully to what they're saying and by paying attention to their body language (how their face and body express their feelings). The Week Junior reader Annie, aged 11, explains what it means to her. “When my friends tell me something important, I listen to what they're trying to say. I can tell by their voices and the looks on their faces if they're upset or happy. This makes me feel like I understand them better. "
    >The _______________ of being active listeners
Listening closely to someone without stopping or giving your own opinion shows that you're interested in what they're saying, even if you don't agree. This helps to avoid mistakes and arguments and can make friendship strong. Samaritans is a charity that supports people by listening to their worries. It says, “Really listening to people makes them feel valued and understood, and being able to listen well to others helps you be someone who others feel they can turn to and trust. "
    >The ways to be active listeners
Listen carefully to what your friend is saying, and avoid jumping in with your own thoughts and feelings. If you really want to talk, Samaritans suggests making a listening sign like nodding your head instead. Ask questions or say things that need more than a yes or no answer, like "Tell me more". Try looking for more information about how they're feeling in their faces and bodies too. "Active listening is a skill and it takes practice, "says Samaritans, "but don't give up, and remember you can only do your best. "

    I Remember, I Remember
    by Thomas Hood
    I remember, I remember,
The house where I was born,
The little window where the sun
    Came peeping (偷窥) in at morn;
He never came a wink (眨眼) too soon,
Nor brought too long a day,
But now, I often wish the night
Had borne my breath away (夺走)!
    I remember, I remember,
    The roses, red and white,
    The violets, and the lily-cups,
    Those flowers made of light!
The lilacs where the robin (知更鸟) built,
    And where my brother set
The laburnum on his birthday, -
    The tree is living yet!
    I remember, I remember,
    Where I was used to   ▲   ,
And thought the air must rush as fresh
    To swallows (燕子) on the wing;
My spirit flew in feathers (羽毛) then,
    That is so heavy now,
And summer pools could hardly cool
The fever on my brow (眉毛)!
    I remember, I remember,
    The fir trees dark and high;
I used to think their slender (细长) tops
    Were close against the sky:
It was a childish ignorance (无知),
But now this is little joy
To know I'm farther off from heaven
Than when I was a boy.

My father was a cemetery (公墓)keeper. When I was a child, he often took me there. Before we left each time, he would lay some stones on some graves (坟墓). I never asked why. I just thought that was his work.
Yesterday, I visited my sick father. He asked me to go to the cemetery and lay some stones. For some reason, it had to be done that day. I agreed. I hadn't been there for a long time.
When I got there, I found a woman in front of one of the graves I would lay a stone on. As I bent to lay it, I heard her whisper "Thank you". It was then that I noticed the date of death on the grave was that same day. The grave was that of a child, only five when he died fifteen years ago.
"He's my son," she said. "But, where's your father? He was always the one to leave the stone. "
I told her that my father was ill but he asked me to do this. It seemed important to him. "Your father's kindness means more to me than anything else. When my child died, I came often to see him. It is our custom to leave a stone. It tells the one who is here that he is thought of. But, then we moved away from here…so many painful memories. . . I was so afraid that he would be alone. But your father marked the grave every time he came. Each time I returned here, I saw that stone and it always comforted me. Your father is the kind of man who would ease the pain of a mother's heart though we are strangers. Just tell him you saw me today, won't you?" she said.

①Some people like to be scared! Choosing to be scared can be fun. Dr. Margee Kerr, a sociologist, explained the science of fear. "Some people like to be scared because they like the way their body changes. " she says.
②Being scared is not always fun. When a balloon pops, we may jump. Our heart beats faster and harder. How does the body have the reactions?" When we meet something startling, our brain and body start making changes to help prepare us for the unknown. " Dr. Kerr explains, "These changes are caused by the senses, which always send information to the brain. It gives out chemicals into the bloodstream, and those chemicals act on different parts of the body. At the same time, the brain decides whether or not the danger is real. "
③Fear is a tool that the brain uses to keep the body safe. It helps a person to hide, run away, or protect oneself. Our memories also help protect us. As we grow, we learn what's unsafe, and our brains keep those memories. Then our brains use fear to warn us of dangers. Dr. Kerr says, "_______________________________. "
④However, too much fear can be harmful because experiences can lead to long-lasting fears that may stop a person from trying new things. A long-lasting fear can mean you've had a bad experience, and your brain doesn't want you to have it again.
⑤Many people have beaten their own fears. Instead of listening to their imagination, they learn the facts about anything that seems scary. Knowledge can help a person feel less afraid. Dr. Kerr grew up on a farm. She was scared of black bears in the woods before. She says," After I read a lot about them, I knew for sure what to do if I ever met a bear and how to protect myself. "

Do sugary drinks cause overweight? While we know that sugary drinks have calories, which are believed to cause overweight, many questions remain. For example, is soda any better? Do you need a sports drink after going to the gym? Here are the facts to some common misunderstandings.
Misunderstanding 1: Clear soda (无色汽水) is healthier than dark soda.
The truth: The dark color of teeth has something to do with the coloring (着色剂) in soda. Lisa R. Young, a professor of Nutrition at New York University said. But the big difference between clear and dark sodas is the caffeine content (咖啡因含量). Since a bottle of soda, whether Coca-Cola or Sprite (雪碧), has less caffeine than that in a cup of coffee, most soda drinkers probably don't need to worry about what to choose.
Misunderstanding 2: If you need caffeine to cheer you up, you should choose an energy drink rather than coffee.
The truth: There are more sugar than caffeine in energy drinks such as Red Bull (红牛). Energy drinks may be easier to drink. But a cup of coffee has between 95 and 200 milligrams (毫克) of caffeine while Red Bull has about 80mg per the same amount, according to US medical research group Mayo Clinic.
Misunderstanding 3: If you go to the gym, you need a sports drink.
The truth: It would be easy to think that you need a sports drink any time you sweat (出汗). But the truth is that the energy in your body won't be used up until you've done more than an hour of training. So you only need to drink some water after a 45-minute exercise on the running machine.
( )27. There are _____________ misunderstandings discussed in the passage.
    A. one B. two C. three D. four
( )28. The underlined word "that" means _____________ in the passage.
    A. Coca-Cola B. Sprite C. coloring D. caffeine
( )29. The following statements are true EXCEPT_____________.
    A. The coloring in soda is responsible for the dark colors of people's teeth.
    B. Soda drinkers don't need to make a hard decision according to the caffeine content.
    C. Compared with coffee, Red bull is a better choice if people need a lot of energy.
    D. With the energy in the body, people can do at least 60-mintue training.
( )30. The passage would be probably taken from _________ in the newspaper.
    A. technology B. sports C. health D. advertisement

    二、阅读理解(本题有20小题;每小题2分; 共计40分)
    阅读下列短文,然后从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。
    A
    Dear Editor,
I was shocked to read your article about the ski resort(滑雪胜地)in Bolivia, South America. Temperature have risen so much in the past 100 years that soon, there may be no snow left at this resort.
In Ningbo, we may think that problems such as this have nothing to do with us. Or, perhaps, we are so busy working and enjoying ourselves that we do not have time to think about the world around us.
Yet the problem is real: the earth has warmed up by more than 0. 5°C over the past few years. Sea levels have risen, and glaciers (冰川) have melted (融化). In the future, droughts (干旱)could cause hunger, and floods (洪水)could completely make low-lying countries disappear.
Scientists make sure that humans are responsible for much of the temperature rise. Too many cars give off bad air, people cut down and bum trees to turn forests into cities, and heavy industry bums coal for power. We have turned a blind eye for too long. We must act now.
We should all ask ourselves, "What can we do to help protect the environment? What have we done to help? What can we start doing now?"
Let’s cut down the number of the things we buy. Let's recycle. Let’s reuse the useful things before we throw them away. Let’s take action now before it is too late.
    Yours faithfully,
    Franky

Did you have any interesting dreams last night?
Our dreams come from a part of the brain that has our thoughts and memories. A person can have up to six dreams a night, and each dream usually lasts from 10 to 40 minutes. Everyone dreams, but not everyone remembers their dreams. Most people dream in color, usually with sound. And we usually dream about ourselves and the people we know.
    Why Do We Dream?
Alan Siegel is a scientist who studies dreams. "Dreams help us get in touch with our deeper feelings, he says. "They can tell us a lot about ourselves, and can help us understand our problems. 55 Another scientist, Robert Stickgold, thinks dreams come from our memories. He believes we dream to remember, because memories are usefill to the brain. Stickgold says the purpose of dreaming through these memories is to help us learn from the past.
Here are a few kinds of dreams and what people think they mean.
Dream 1: You Meet Someone While in Your Pajamas (睡衣)
Sometimes people dream that they meet someone they know while wearing their underwear (or nothing at all). This dream may be the result of an embarrassing event in your life. Some people think we dream about embarrassing situations 迁 our brains are trying to deal with an event in our own lives.
    Dream 2: You're Flying.
If you dream about flying, you are probably quite happy. This is a good period in your life. You may feel that other people see you as a leader.
Dream 3: You Didn't Study for a Test
This probably means you are worried about an important event coming in your life. If you're not prepared for the event, your dream may be telling you, “It's time to get to work!,,
Dream 4: Someone's Running after You
If you dream someone is running after you, it may tell you should face the problems in your life instead of giving it up.
    29. What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. Dreams have different kinds.

    C. Everyone has dreams, but not everyone remembers them.

Sarah had five dogs that she had to walk each day. She was paid by her neighbors to walk their dogs because most of them did not get home from work until very late. Sarah would go to their homes, one at a time, and then she would walk each dog for a short time before moving on to the next dog.
Sarah loved her job. In fact, she would need money she could get with the plans she had for the future. When she graduated high school, she wanted to go to college and become an animal doctor. Although it would take a lot of hard work, she could not imagine a life without animals. She wanted to help any animal that was hurt or in need. When she was little, she imagined she was the doctor and was always trying to put bandages on the arms and legs of her toys.
This afternoon, though, Sarah just couldn't enjoy her work. All of her friends were going to Claire's birthday. But she was not available.
As Sarah arrived at the first house, inspiration struck! She would simply go to each house and get each dog and walk all the dogs at one time. That way, she could still complete her job, get paid, and still have time to go and meet her friends.
After thirty minutes, Sarah knew the fantastic idea she'd had was not so fantastic at all. She was sitting on the side of the road. Two of the dogs would not stop barking (吠叫)at each other, and she failed to keep all the dogs walking and not running.
Sarah had learned an important lesson. There were no shortcuts (捷径)in doing a good job. She would just have to go and meet her friends on another day.
