A record 1,101 manatees died in Florida last year, many from hunger. So last December, government wildlife experts came up with a plan to give food to the manatees. They decided to feed them green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. Ron Mezich, an expert, said, “We’re making a difference.” So far, they have served up more than 193,000 pounds of lettuce to hungry manatees. But as the weather is getting warm, the program is expected to end soon.
Manatees are huge sea animals that only eat sea grass and other plants that live in the sea. That’s one reason why they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. Since 1967, Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals. Most dangers to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems facing the animals are boats. Manatees are curious (好奇的) and fairly slow. That has led to thousands of manatees being hit or killed by boats. At one point, there were only about 2,000 manatees left in Florida. With protection, the number increased. In 2016, there were more than6,000 manatees.
However, as sea grass began to disappear, the number of manatees keeps going down again. Warming seas with polluted water have created huge growths of algae (藻) on the ocean’s surface. The algae blocks the sunlight that allows the sea grass to grow. In Indian River Lagoon, where manatees often go in the winter, about 90% of the sea grass beds there have died off. Long term, Florida will work to help restore (恢复) sea grass beds. But that will take time. Scientists still worry that hundreds more manatees could starve this winter.

A. They are as big as cows. B. They can swim like cows.

57. How has the number of manatees changed over years?

Starting April 1, many of the high buildings in Philadelphia(费城) will be going dark at night. Though the move will cut down on energy use, the main goal of the effort is to help protect migrating birds.
Many birds migrate (迁徙) twice a year. In the northern half of the world, many birds fly north in the summer and south in the winter, looking for food and better conditions.
These migrations are hard, and many birds die along the way. Some of these deaths are the result of human actions. One of the biggest troubles for migrating birds comes from things humans have built. Buildings are a great challenge for migrating birds. Experts say that as many as one billion birds may die every year in the US alone as a result of flying into buildings. The windows of buildings can reflect things like the sky or trees, causing birds to fly directly into the glass.
For birds migrating at night, bright city lights add another difficulty, confusing(迷惑) birds that might usually be guided by the stars. Philadelphia got a sad warning last October, when thousands of migrating birds were killed in one night. It may have been connected to the low clouds over the city at the time as well.
Now the city is beginning a program called Lights Out Philly. It asks building owners and people to turn off all outside lights that aren’t needed between midnight and 6 in the morning twice a year (from April 1 to May 31, and from August 15 to November 15). Many of the city’s best-known buildings like the Comcast towers will take part.

Locusts are grasshoppers(蚂炸). Normally grasshoppers do little harm. But when there are lots of them, their bodies and behavior change. As locusts, they travel in huge groups, eating all
the plants in an area and moving on. In a single day, a small swarm of locusts can eat as much food as 35,000 people. Along the way, they lay more eggs, producing greater swarms of locusts.
Billions of locusts arrived in Pakistan last June from Iran, which has resulted in Pakistan's worst locust problem in many years. In early February, Pakistan's Prime Minister, Imran Khan, called a state of emergency(紧急).
One unusual solution was suggested to deal with the locusts: it was reported that China had plans to send 100,000 ducks to Pakistan. In China, ducks have helped fight locusts in the past. A single duck can eat over 200 locusts a day.
But soon after the idea was reported, it was canceled. A team of experts pointed out that most of Pakistan does not provide a good environment for ducks, which require lots of water, like rivers and lakes. China has sent a team of experts to Pakistan to help find out how to deal with the emergency so that the locusts don't wind up becoming a problem for China, too.
Pakistan is now planning to buy more pesticides(杀虫剂)from India so that they can do more spraying from airplanes to control the locusts. But no one knows whether this will work or not.
