It is been four years since I came to America. The year before I arrived, every weekend I was woken up by “Spring River in the Flower Moon Night”, played by mom on a Zheng (古筝). Mom was always enchanted by the beauty of Chinese traditional music, but she never had the chance to learn an instrument. Five years ago, she got a Zheng from a friend and has been playing and performing ever since. In this foreign country, when I miss mom, I search for the songs she used to play on the Internet. But I never expected to hear Chinese music here in Boston.
Earlier this year, I happened to meet Zhantao Lin, the director of Boston Chinese Association. At Lin’s house, I heard the sound of the erhu! Lin later introduced me to his music team and I heard them rehearse (排练)for a performance this year. It suddenly brought me back to my hometown in China.
Teaching is also part of Lin’s daily routine. Besides performing, he passed on his love of the erhu to his students. I went to one of Lin’s classes and met 9-year-old London Turk. I asked him why he chose to learn the erhu. “Mom loved this instrument. She says there are so many beautiful things in Chinese culture: the music, the language, and the art. So I expect to explore the beauty of the erhu.”he said.
I was shocked. I thank my mom for giving me a chance to be lost in the Chinese musical world. The music makes me relaxed, and it also cures me of my homesickness. Now living alone in a foreign land, I feel deeply proud of the magical charm and power of our culture.

As a Chinese saying goes,“Every grain comes from hard work”. Food is necessary for offering energy to our bodies, but sometimes we buy too much of it at the store.
Before throwing away old bananas, you can use the peels to shine up metals and leathers. Press the peel against the surface, move it backwards and forwards and then polish it with an old cloth. Banana meal is also good for reducing wrinkles. Put a bit on those trouble spots, let it sit for a while, and then wash it off, and your wrinkles will go away. Lemons are great for lightening skin and hair. If you have trouble with some skin diseases, like red spots on your face, put a bit of fresh lemon juice on them and leave it overnight. You will notice a difference in the morning. Apples will help ripen(使成熟)tomatoes quickly when they are placed together in a paper bag, and orange peels are great fire starters for your next backyard campfire party.
If your dog or cat brings home fleas (跳蚤),just pour some salt into the vacuum cleaner(真空吸尘器), let it sit and then vacuum up the fleas. The salt can kill the fleas. Be sure to throw away the vacuum bag or empty the vacuum bin immediately, or some of the fleas can climb out.
Beer is a great hair lightener. If you are out of lemons, try dipping your hair in beer before going outside. Just don’t forget to wash it out afterwards. Milk is great for removing dirty marks.
As you can see, there are many other uses for everyday foods around the house. So next time, before throwing food away, stop for a moment and think about all their uses.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) recently tested an oven they used to bake five chocolate chip cookies. We now know the results of that experiment: the cookies took a lot l 76 to bake in space than on Earth. The cookies that came out best r 77 two hours of baking time inside the International Space Station. The baking time for cookies on Earth is generally only about 20 minutes.
The cookies are the first food 78 (bake) in space from raw food materials. The American company Nanoracks d 79 and built the cookie oven. Hilton Double Tree hotels supplied the cookie dough. The makers of the oven did e 80 some big difference in the baking time in space, but they were surprised that that difference was so large. “There is still a lot to look into to figure out really what is 81 (drive) that difference, but definitely a cool result,” said Mary Murphy, a baking expert. She said the baking results will continue to be examined in order 82 better understand why space baking took so much longer. In addition, researchers will study the effectiveness of the baking tray, which was designed to work in micro-gravity(微重力) 83 (condition).
The five chocolate chip cookies were frozen when they were s 84 to space. Each had to be baked separately in the oven. Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano took charge of the baking experiment in December. No one has tasted the space-traveling cookies just yet. Organizers of the experiment say additional testing will need to be carried out to determine whether they are s 85 to eat.
