The Daily Life of a Beijing Teenager—Wayne
The alarm clock rings. I have to get up. I go to the kitchen to fry myself an egg for breakfast. My sister buys something from the market stalls on the way to school so she can sleep longer.
I read something. Sometimes I need to learn famous poems or texts in other languages.
I set off for school. I sometimes go to school by bus. However, I normally go to school by bicycle. In China, drivers have to be older than 18 years old. As I’m 16, I can’t drive to school like teenagers in other countries.
We have to be in school at least 20 minutes before lessons begin. It’s a school rule. If you don’t arrive on time, you can expect punishment. If you are often late, the teacher will talk to your parents seriously.
Classes begin. Today we have history, chemistry, geography, maths, English and sport of course. We have sport every day. Our school didn’t use to have a football pitch (足球场), basketball courts or a running track (跑道) , but now it does.
All of us eat in the school canteen (餐厅). We have 30 minutes to eat our lunch and then we have a break for 20 minutes. Sometimes I go to the library to study and sometimes I go outside to play table tennis.
Afternoon classes begin.
We finish school but we can’t go home; we have an exam after class. School is so hard!
I’m home again. That means I can have supper early. It takes me 30 minutes to eat and then I have to do my homework. We have lots of homework every day.
I’m never asleep before midnight. I always wake up less than six hours later.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous landmarks (地标) in Australia. This summer holiday, I got the chance to visit it and find out what makes this building so great.
As our guide told us, the Sydney Opera House was built with a kind of self-cleaning material that is very rare even today.
First, we visited the Drama Hall. We learned about the designer of the Sydney Opera House—Danish architect(建筑师) Jorn Utzon. He was the winner of an international design competition. However, he designed the building according to his own tastes, which caused several problems. The project was completed 10 years late. The cost of construction(建造)was way over budget(预算). Utzon didn’t get to see it after it was built.
Then, we visited Joan Sutherland Theatre. The theater was refurbished (翻新) in 2017 with new high-tech equipment. There was a rehearsal(排练) that day, so we could hear the beautiful sound of the orchestra(管弦乐队). Finally, we arrived at the largest theater-Concert Hall. It has hosted many kinds of performances, from classical to rock music. A few years ago, a sports event was even held there.
Before we finished the tour, the guide told us the rest of Utzon’s story. In 1966, Utzon had an argument with the government and refused to give in. He had to leave the country. It was a hard time in his life. But many years later, people understood him and saw the building as a masterpiece.

People in Western countries are eating less meat these days, whether for their health or because they want to protect animals. But now they have another reason.
Eating less meat can help to prevent climate change according to a study published in Nature.
Raising livestock (家畜) is bad for the environment. When animals like cows digest food, their stomachs make greenhouse gases, which is a major cause of global warming.
Seventeen percent of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) come from livestock farming, The New York Times reported.
In addition, to raise these livestock, people have to cut down forests and turn them into farms. Forests play a key role in fighting global warming because they absorb (吸收) greenhouse gases.
Eating less meat according to certain guidelines could cut global food-related emissions by nearly a third by 2050, the study found. Maintaining (保持) a vegetarian diet in the long term could bring down emissions by 63 percent.
But eating less meat won’t be easy. According to the study, people in Western countries will need to eat 90 percent less meat than they do now. Otherwise, it will have no impact (影响) on our climate. Scientists are trying to find ways to replace meat.
Some say that eating insects could help. A UN report says that eating insects is healthier and better for the environment. They produce 75 percent less greenhouse gas than livestock.
Some experts are creating lab-grown meat. They make meat in a lab using livestock cells(细胞). US company JUST said people in the US might be able to buy its lab-grown meat in the near future.
16. Western people eat less meat for reasons EXCEPT ________.

B. less livestock means less greenhouse gas emissions
C. animals are an important part of ecosystem
D. people will plant more trees around their houses
19. How much less meat should Western people eat to influence the climate?
A. 63 percent. B. 70 percent. C. 75 percent. D. 90 percent.
20. Which is the best title for the passage?

Do you know how to play a game called "Musical Chairs"? It is easy to play and most people enjoy it. All you need are some chairs, some people and some way of making music. You may use a piano or any other musical instrument, if someone can play it. You may use a tape recorder. You can even use a radio.
Put the chairs in a line. The chairs may be put in twos, back to back. A better way is to have the chairs in one line with each chair facing in the opposite direction to the chair next to it.
The game is easy. When the music starts, the players walk round the chairs. Everyone goes in the same direction, of course, they should walk in time to the music. If the music is fast, they should walk quickly. If the music is slow, they should walk slowly.
The person playing music cannot see the people in the game. When the music stops, the players try to sit on the chairs. If a person cannot find a chair to sit on, he drops out. Then, before the music starts again, one chair must be taken away. When the music stops again, one more player will be out.
At last, there will be two players and one chair. The one who sits on the chair when the music stops is the winner.

Today, people who need heart transplants (移植) must wait and hope to receive a donation. Even if they survive the wait, they might experience organ rejection (器官排异)and die. But this problem could be solved soon.
On April 15, 2019, scientists from Israel’s Tel Aviv University announced that they had created a human heart using 3D printing. “This is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an all heart,” scientist Tal Dvir told Ha’aretz.
The heart has cells, blood vessels(血管), ventricles(心室) and chambers(心房), just like a real heart. But scientists still have more to make certain before they can start using the hearts. For one thing, the new experimental organ(器官) is tiny about half the size of your thumb(拇指). It also can’t pump(抽吸) blood yet. It’s like a tiny airplane that has all of the right parts, but can’t fly.
Don’t laugh, though! This is still a major achievement. The World Health Organization (WHO) says more people die each year from heart diseases than any other cause of death. Dvir and his team used a complex process, turning human fat tissue(脂肪组织) into human heart tissue with stem cells(干细胞) technology. The tissue was then turned into “bio-ink” for the 3D printer.
Perfectly, each printed heart would use tissue taken from the person who needs it. This way, the patients’ bodies will be less likely to refuse the organ, making transplants much safer. In theory, the skill could be used to produce a new heart in just one day.
The team’s next step is to develop the technology further and use it to print other human organs.
“Maybe, in 10 years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world and these programs will be managed regularly,” Dvir said.
11.What do we know about the 3D printed heart?
A.It doesn’t have blood vessels. B.It is the same size as a real heart.
C.It can’t work like a real heart yet. D.It looks like a tiny airplane.
12.Why is the 3D printed heart considered to be a major achievement?
A.Because it is the first time that scientists has tried to print a heart.
B.Because it offers some hope to people with heart diseases.
C.Because it was produced through a complex process.
D.Because it proved that printing human organs is impossible.
13.What was used to make the printed heart?
A.Fat tissue. B.Heart tissue. C.Stem cells. D.Heart cells.
14.What will Dvir’s team do in the future?
A.They will start to print hearts for transplants.
B.They will try to shorten the time it take print a heart.
C.They will improve their technology wider use.
D.They will work with hospitals to develop printers.
15.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.3D printer. B.Organ transplants. C.Build new heart. D.Human organs.
How many times have you noticed that a person talking with you seems to be troubled by phone? You feel the person is not completely into a conversation and with more attention. "Phubbing" is defined as the act of treating someone coldly in a social setting by looking at the phone instead of paying attention. This is what is called Phubbing.
How Phubbing influences people
________
I have been through this, and it went so deep that I started disconnecting from everyone around me. They felt that I had been look down upon them. Family and friends need their time with you, yet I was busy exploring social media either for work or fun.
Physical & Mental Health
It's resulting in serious neck pains. Keeping your head lowered and looking at the phone all the time, does hurt in the long term. You might not even see it coming. Also, you have focused attention on the phone so much that you cut off from the real world completely.
How to stop Phubbing
It was not really easy to focus attention on something else or jump into a conversation right after I had kept my phone down. Finally, I decided to change and lay down some rules, and here I am sharing with you.
No Phone Zone at Home
While taking it completely off wasn't a solution. So we came up with no phone zones. I kept down my phone for next 3 hours after I reached home. The phone was kept in another room and was only to be attended when an important call came in.
No Phone Zone with Friends
This was even strong, and the only way out was to turn down the ringer completely. Keep the phone in the pocket, and if you feel calls are very important, you can always connect with a Bluetooth earphone, and attend them. I always made sure that when friends meet, everyone kept our phones away. It wasn't really easy I had to fight my sense of expectation of getting a message.
Now, I have realized that things were improving after I started following the rules. My attention was better, and I was communicating well with my family and friends. I was able to discuss which I always missed during Phubbing.

A.低头族 B.冷落 C.忽视 D.精神分散

19.In order to stop Phubbing, you can do the following things EXCEPT"_______.
