Van Gogh painted sunflowers for the first time in the summer of 1886.Two years later, his interest
appeared again after he settled in Arles. After he had invited the French artist Paul Gauguin, whom he
admired, to join his Studio of the South, he began painting sunflowers to brighten up the whitewashed
walls of the yellow house he was living in, not far from the town’s railway station.
Gauguin accepted Van Gogh’s invitation. When he began dragging his heels(脚后跟), Van Gogh
painted the last two of the four original Sunflowers for the modest bedroom where his guest would sleep
following his arrival that autumn, “Van Gogh saw the Sunflowers for Gauguin’s bedroom as a way of
attracting his friend to come from Brittany,”says Bailey.
27. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that ________.
A. Van Gogh had much trouble in painting the Sunflowers.
B. Van Gogh was not good at painting large Sunflowers.
C. Van Gogh realized the Sunflowers would make him known.
D. Van Gogh didn’t like his Sunflowers at all at that time.

With the Chinese language becoming popular, the UK government plans to invest(投资) 10 million
pounds to help more kids learn Mandarin (普通话). Do you think it is necessary for the UK pupils to
learn Mandarin? Some people share their opinions online.
According to Martin Gayford, “Gauguin was very surprised by the Sunflowers, which he repeatedly
praised and asked for as a gift. Years later, Gauguin himself painted some sunflower pictures.”
Van Gogh’s Sunflowers stand for (代表)his relationship with Gauguin. “I think he painted them for
the joy of it,” says Jansen. “Van Gogh was at the height of his powers in the summer of 1888,” explains
Bailey. “He painted the Sunflowers quickly and with great energy and confidence.” Van Gogh wrote to his
brother Theo in late August, “I’m painting quickly now, which won’t surprise you when it’s a question of
painting large Sunflowers.”
Tsd (UK): The learning of any language can be valuable and useful, but it is not suitable for
everyone. Chinese is a difficult language to learn and the UK is said to be bad at learning foreign
languages. Why should they learn Chinese when most people in the world speak English?
Mark (US): I studied French for 2 years in high school and German for 4 years in college. I studied
Mandarin informally for about 4 months before moving to China. Now I speak Mandarin every day as my
wife doesn’t speak English. But it is far from being fluent. Learning additional languages is a great thing,
which offers a different view on the world around us. Nowadays, it’s almost necessary to be able to speak
more than just your mother tongue.
Van Gogh recognized at once that he had created something important and that his sunflowers were
so different. As he told Theo in January 1889, while other artists were known for painting other flowers,
“The sunflower is mine.” This, in fact, explains the reason for the popularity of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers
today.
George (UK): No, unless they’re taught from a very early stage of childhood. Mandarin is so difficult.
If China really is going to lead the world, it’ll have to do so by speaking the world ’s leading
language—English.
24.Van Gogh painted sunflowers in 1888 in order to ________.
A. give them to Gauguin.
C. make his living.
B. show his artistic talent to others.
D. decorate his house.
28.What is probably Mark’s main purpose of learning Chinese?
A. The official request of his company.
25. Where were the last two Sunflowers placed by Van Gogh?
B. Effective communication with his family.
A. In Gauguin’s bedroom.
B. In the British museum.
D. In a rich businessman's house.
C. Further education in the future.
C. In the town’s railway station.
D. His frequent travel to China.
26. How did Gauguin feel about Van Gogh’s painting — the Sunflowers?
29. Tsd from UK disagrees to learn Chinese for some reasons except ________.
A. English is the mostly spoken language.
A. Very bad.
B. Quite surprised.
D. Just so - so.
C. Rather worried.
B. The people in the UK are not good foreign language learners.

C. China is not as developed a country as the UK.
D. It is difficult to learn Chinese.
30. What does George think of learning Chinese?
A. It takes too much time.
that it should be having an impact on tornadoes too,” says Victor Gensini, an extreme weather expert at
Northern Illinois University. “Instead of asking: ‘Did climate change cause this tornado?’ It’s better to
operate under the assumption that climate change did play a role,” he says.
B. It’s not popular.
D. It’s unnecessary.
While the science on climate change and tornadoes isn’t clear, meteorologists are predicting that
conditions benefiting tornadoes will continue this month. “I’m worried about the rest of the year to be
honest. I don’t think we’re out of the woods, yet.” Gensini says.
C. It’s of little use.
31. What seems to be the major problem when foreigners try to learn Chinese?
A. Misunderstanding about China.
C. No enough learning resources.
B. Its difficulty as a language.
D. The great popularity of English.
32. What is one difference between the recent tornadoes and the ones in the past?
A. They hit only Kentucky.
B. They caught people unprepared.
D. They happened in December.
D
C. They caused no deaths.
The tornadoes that recently struck the U.S. are some of the most destructive and deadly in history.
The death in Kentucky, the hardest hit state, reached 80 on Monday, with dozens still unaccounted for.
The scale of destruction and timing of the tornadoes so late in the year — most tornadoes occur in the
spring and summer — is fueling discussion about how climate change may have influenced this deadly
disaster.
33. What can be inferred in paragraph 3?
A. Scientists are unsure about how climate change influences tornadoes.
B. There is an agreement on how tornadoes may change.
C. Waves and floods often follow tornadoes.
D. Climate change will make tornadoes the most deadly disaster.
34. Which statement may Victor Gensini agree with?
“In my 40 years as a meteorologist (气象学家 ), this was one of the most shocking weather events
I’ve ever witnessed,” says Jeff Masters, at Yale Climate Connections. “Watching these storms on Friday
night, my thought was, ‘Is no season safe?’ Extreme tornadoes in December. That was mind blowing to
me.”
A. The climate change will make tornadoes much less frequent.
B. The science on climate change is advancing very quickly.
C. The tornadoes have nothing to do with climate warming.
D. The climate change most likely has an effect on tornadoes.
35. What does the underlined phrase “out of the woods” mean in the last paragraph?
Unlike heat waves and floods, the link between a warming world and tornadoes is complex and
uncertain. Scientists have several theories about how tornado behavior may change. Tornadoes in
December are possible. But it remains to be seen whether climate change will strengthen or increase the
frequency of tornadoes.
A. Out of danger.
C. Out of forest.
B. Out of question.
D. Out of difficulty.
According to NOAA’s data, there has been a recorded increase in the number of observed tornadoes
since 1950, which experts believe is largely due to better technology such as Doppler radar. There’s been
no observed increase in the frequency of major tornadoes over time. For example, 59 of the most severe
F5 tornadoes in the U.S. have occurred since 1950. But if the storm that destroyed Kentucky turns out to
have been an F5, it will have been the first since 2013 — bringing to an end the longest recorded period
so far.

One day, Barton, who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door, found
that he only had one coin left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman named Whitney opened the door. He
changed his mind and asked for a cup of water instead of a meal. Whitney thought Barton looked hungry,
so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”
“You don't owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”
He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Barton left that house, he not only felt
stronger physically, but also increased his faith in God and humans. He was about to give up and quit
before this point.
Right now the tiger population is increasing steadily under this program in India and in Far East
Russia. Thanks to the hard work of WCS, these large cats have a ____65____(good) chance of survival in
their natural environments than ever, not just in zoos.
Years later Whitney became critically ill. Her husband, who took care of her, could not go out to
work, and her poor son had to drop out of school because of being unable to afford his school tuition. He
had to pick up coal in a mine near his home. Then he sold all the coal he collected for a few coins to help
his parents. Fortunately, their neighbors often brought food and medicine to them, enabling them to
survive the hardship of life. Besides, they also raised money for her from a fundraiser on the Internet.
People donate money for her in banks, by phone using a credit card and online.
