一、阅读单选
Very often, when we see young people sitting there, looking at the screen of a mobile phone and smiling, we may think nothing is wrong. But when we come to the question“how much time do they actually spend on media(传播媒介) daily?”, the answer is surprising: young people spend about nine hours every day using media, and this only includes media used for enjoyment.
Today’s young people seem to have become crazy multitaskers. They often use media when doing other activities. Some watch TV when doing homework, some text(发短信), and some others listen to music. But what do young people think of this? A research showed that two thirds of them believed watching TV or texting had no influence on their schoolwork. Half of them thought using social media made no difference. However, researches have given a different answer:“media multitaskers” did worse in tests.
Scientists did a research among more than 400 students. It shows that those who text Alot have more trouble sleeping and do worse in their study. In another research, students who didn’t text during a lesson took down a lot more notes than those who were texting. A similar research also found that students who texted when doing schoolwork had lower overall(总体的) grades.
According to a research, if a kid uses social media a lot, especially at night, he or she will sleep worse and feel more nervous and depressed(消沉的). On the one hand, young people stay up late to check messages and information. They may also be woken up by messages they receive. On the other hand, even the light from a screen could influence their sleep. Some other researches also show that children who use media at night go to bed later, get fewer hours of sleep each week, and become sleepy more easily during the daytime.

The opening of the BeijingZhangjiakou highspeed railway took place in December, 2019. The railway is a milestone in China’s railway development because it has used the latest technologies in railway building.
The railway is 174 kilometers long, with 10 stations. The stations are managed by one control center, which is described by China Railway Beijing Group—also known as CR Beijing—as an “intelligent(智能的) brain”. The center collects and shares the stations’ realtime information. “With the information, the workers in the center can control the stations’ lighting and temperature, monitor (监测) trains’ operation and deal with emergencies (紧急情况),” said Zhu DianPing from CR Beijing.
Zhu said some trains on the BeijingZhangjiakou line are “smart” as they provide 5G signals and wireless charging (无线充电) for passengers, as well as intelligent lighting. These trains can start and stop, open and close doors, and deal with emergencies themselves.
All the ten stations provide eticket services. Travelers who have bought tickets online can use their ID cards instead of waiting in line for paper tickets.
At Qinghe Railway Station in Beijing, China’s first visual remote ticket vending machine (远程可视售票机) has been installed (安装) to help passengers who are not able to afford tickets online. Passengers keep in touch with the conductor through the machine and buy tickets according to video instructions.
In addition, the Badaling Great Wall Station, the deepest underground railway station in China, is another great example of the country’s achievements in railway building.

Meghan Pierce is a high school senior. Her excellent memory helped her achieve top grades. But when asked what she still remembered about her school lessons during the summer vacation, she joked, “Nothing.”
According to Pierce, she has the most trouble remembering historical facts, and brain experts say the problem is infrequency (很少) of use. Memory problems, once the worry of the elderly, have become a problem among people of all ages.
But researchers say memory can be improved. The key to achieving it is simpler than you might think—lots of practice and better organization. Can’t find your keys? Keep them in the same place every day. Forget names? Use word associations (联想). Fearful of forgetting a special activity? Tell your brain the date is important and repeat it to yourself again and again.
That doesn’t mean it is easy to improve memory because memory is influenced by many things. New research is showing that memory can become worse because of stress or injury (受伤). Young soccer players who take a lot of headings (头球) report some memory problems.
Besides, experts say, forgetting information is normal. “We function (运转) so well as human beings because in fact we forget things,” said James L. Olds. “Our brain can’t store too much information, so we need to forget something to make sure it works well.”
And forgetting over the summer doesn’t matter because the information isn’t really “lost”. It can be easily found back with review in the fall. “What students generally lose over the summer are facts not related to images or not included in a system,” said Ira B.Black.
“It is also easier to forget information that is new,” said Professor Alan S. Brown. High school student Lyndsey Wilson agreed. “I have been studying English for four years, and it is less likely to be forgotten than the Spanish which I first started learning this year.”
11.It’s most difficult for Meghan to remember historical facts because ________.
A.she doesn’t use them quite often
B.she doesn’t listen carefully in class
C.she doesn’t have any interest in them
12.The writer develops the main idea of Paragraph 3 by ________.
A.making comparisons B.giving examples C.listing opinions
13.The writer uses the example of young soccer players in Paragraph 4 to show that memory is influenced by ________.
A.stress B.practice C.injury
14.According to James L. Olds, ________.
A.it’s normal for people to forget things
B.students have too many things to remember
C.it’s easy for people to forget new knowledge
Modern technology has made it easier for common people to rent things or services to (将……租给……) others. With an Internet connection and a mobile phone, we can find almost anything. It could be a new dress to wear on the weekend, or someone to clean our house. This is the sharing economy (共享经济), and it is now a $20 billion-a-year business. But some people are now asking: Just how good is it for society in general?
Not long ago, when people went on vacation, they usually stayed in a hotel. Today they have the choice of staying in someone’s private house. They pay less, but what influence does this have on the hotel industry and the economy? Hotels receive fewer guests, but they still have to pay salaries (薪水) to their staff and taxes (税) to the government. Many people who rent out rooms do not. So the government gets less money, and some hotels might even close down.
Then there are car-sharing websites. Instead of using your own car for a long trip, you can get a ride with someone for a small amount of money. Some people argue this is better for the environment since fewer cars on the roads mean less pollution. But how many people choose to use these websites rather than taking the bus or the train? Public transportation is, after all, much kinder to the environment than cars.
Many websites offer cooking services. Instead of going to a restaurant, you can use your mobile phone to order dishes from people in your neighborhood. There is even a website where you can buy leftovers (剩饭) that people haven’t eaten! This is sure to save you time and money. But is it risky? Can you trust the people cooking your food? Restaurants have to follow strict rules to make sure their food is safe to eat.
There is no doubt that the sharing economy is growing. Some economists think it will be worth $335 billion by 2025. As new technology makes accommodation ( 住宿), transportation, and sharing food easier, the question of “Is it good for the economy, the environment, and people?” will remain.
15.What does the underlined word it in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Modern technology. B.A mobile phone. C.The sharing economy.
16.What may happen if people choose to stay in private homes instead of hotels during their vacation?
①People can save a little money. ②The government gets more taxes.
③Hotels might go out of business.
A.①② B.①③ C.②③
17.Which of the following does the writer support most according to Paragraph 3?
A.Driving your own car. B.Getting a ride with someone. C.Taking the bus or the train.
18.What do the economists think the sharing economy will be like for the next few years?
A.It will end. B.It will grow. C.It will bring the government trouble.
Dr. Reyes Guana is the superintendent (负责人) of Byron Union School District in Northern California, USA.He has a big title now, but Guana never forgets his beginnings.
Guana was born in a poor Mexican family with eight children. His parents always had two jobs to make ends meet. As a boy, Guana was very quiet in school. He had a good relationship with the school cleaner. He called her “Nike” because she wore Nike shoes. The boy liked how Nike made everything clean. He told her he liked her job. “Whatever you want to do, make sure you go to college,” Nike said.
Guana also looked up to the school headmaster, who was tall and friendly. The school headmaster said that his job was to help the students and teachers. “When I grow up, I want to do what you’re doing,” Guana said. “Well, if you stick to your dream, you’ll get there,” the headmaster replied.
And Guana did get there. But it was really a long journey. At first, he followed in Nike’s footsteps and was cleaning schools. He worked at three schools in order to make enough money to pay for his college education. He held that job for four years and then worked his way up to being a school safety monitor (监督员). After that, he worked as a teacher for a few years. And in 2019, he became a superintendent.

Traffic lights are red, yellow and green. They are very important signals (信号). Traffic lights are usually placed at busy street corners to help control traffic. Sometimes, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. Most young children are taught what each of the colored lights means, so everybody can stay safe.
The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside railway tracks (轨道). The color red was used to mean “stop” because it warned people of danger. A red light was also the easiest color to see from a distance. Train drivers could see the red “stop” light ahead and had enough time to slow down and stop their trains. A green light was used to mean “take care”and a white light meant “go”.
However, there were many dangerous accidents on the train tracks. Some train drivers thought a star shining in the night sky was a white light that meant “go”. So the signals were swapped. The “go” light was changed to green and the “take care”light was changed to white.
During these times, people travelled by train or in carts pulled by horses. Years later, when cars were built, people began to drive them because they could travel much faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear and many people were hurt crossing the roads. Yellow warning signs had to be placed beside the roads to remind drivers to take care and allow people to cross safely.
Today, towns and cities all over the world have traffic lights. Red and green lights match the signals used on the railways. Yellow lights are easy to see, so they are used to warn drivers that they should slow down and prepare to stop.
26.Why was the color red used to mean “stop”?
A.It reminded people of traffic rules.
B.It helped trains run smoothly.
C.It gave people a warning of danger.
27.What does the underlined word “swapped”in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Designed. B.Exchanged. C.Suggested.
28.In which order did the “take care” light develop?
a. A white light b. A green light. c. A yellow light.
A.a-b-c B.b-c-a C.b-a-c
29.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The advantages of traffic lights.
B.The history of traffic lights.
C.The meanings of traffic lights.
Are the Olympic Games outdated? That might seem like a strange question. But it’s exactly what the International Olympic Committee (国际奥林匹克委员会) is considering. At the 2012 London Olympics, IOC President Thomas Bach noticed something. “You could see that the younger people did not have interest in watching the Games any more. They were not there.”
To change this, the IOC wants to make the Summer Olympics younger. But that isn’t as simple as just adding more sports. It’s impossible to always add new sports to the Olympics. It would become too much for host cities to deal with. The IOC asks host cities to choose the new sports and then the committee decides which ones can finally be added to that year’s games. The new sports would be included in that year’s Olympics only. The IOC has agreed to add baseball / softball, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Though the 2020 Olympics have been postponed until next year because of COVID-19, we are still looking forward to them, especially to the new sports.
People are wondering what makes up an Olympic sport. Some people would like to see e-sports at the Olympics, because they are really popular. President Bach thinks video games with killing are not acceptable. One of the main principles (原则) of the Olympics is to encourage world peace. At the moment, the future of e-sports is still unclear.
What about the Winter Olympics? Not to worry. The IOC has already added seven new sports for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Winter Olympics’ situation is a little different. The Winter Olympics have less than half the sports of the Summer Olympics, so they have room to grow.
30.What did Thomas Bach notice after the 2012 London Olympics?
A.Some sports were less popular.
B.There were fewer young players at the Olympics.
C.Young people were not interested in the Olympics.
31.What does the underlined word “postponed” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese?
A.延期 B.取消 C.整改
32.What is Paragraph 2 mainly talking about?
A.What the influence of COVID-19 is.
B.How a new sport is added to the Olympics.
C.Why the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo are put off.
33.What does Thomas Bach think of video games with killing?
A.They fail to encourage world peace.
B.They are becoming more popular.
C.They are for young people only.
A month ago I had no idea that on a Saturday afternoon in November I’d be hanging 30 meters above the ground and enjoying it. Now I looked down at the river far below me, and realized why people love rock climbing.
My friend Matt and I had arrived at the Activity Center on Friday evening. The accommodation (住处) wasn’t wonderful, but we had everything we needed (beds, blankets, food), and we were happy to be out of the city and in the fresh air.
On Saturday morning we met the other ten members of our group. Cameron had come along with two friends, Kevin and Simon, while sisters Carole and Lynn had come with Amanda. We had come from different places and none of us knew the area.
We knew we were going to spend the weekend outdoors, but none of us was sure exactly how. Half of us spent the morning caving (洞穴探险) while the others went rock climbing and then we changed at lunchtime. Matt and I went to the caves first. Climbing out was harder than going in, but after a lot of pushing, we were out at last — covered in mud (泥) but excited by what we’d done.

C.Some of them had been to the Activity Center before.
36.What word might the writer use to describe her experience of caving?
A.Fun. B.Scary. C.Relaxing.
