M: I know. I’ve seen pictures of ducks with straws in their throats.
W: I just saw the saddest video. A turtle had a plastic straw stuck in its nose. It makes me feel terrible to think I may have contributed to that. Scientists believe that by 2050, there will be more plastics in the ocean than fish.

M: So, what should we do?
W: People can switch to steel straws. You can clean them and use them again.
M: That will make a lot of people mad at first.
W: It’s better than killing the fish in our oceans. After we eat, I’ll take you to a gift shop where they sell recycled products. It’s just around the corner from this restaurant.
M: Great!

A. The “standard script”. B. The “seal script”. C. The “running script”.
C 19. A 20. A
Today I’d like to talk about the important Chinese art of writing— calligraphy. The Chinese written language began to develop more than 3,000 years ago. It eventually developed into five basic script types. All of them are still in use today. The earliest writing looked like detailed pictures. They represented entire ideas and were cut onto rocks and bones. The written language then took the more standardized form of the “seal script”. It is also called Zhuanshu in Chinese. It was usually used in the personal seals of important people. By the late Han Dynasty, a new standard form known as Lishu, or the “official script” was being used by government clerks. Flexible brushes came into regular use. And more artistic effects were possible for the first time. Two “handwritten” writing forms — the “running script” or Xingshu and the “cursive script” or Caoshu, also developed around this time. In the “cursive script”, individual characters were written in short form. And two or more characters could be linked together in a single movement of the brush. As the “official script” became more and more artistic, the “standard script” or Kaishu was born. In this elegant form of writing, the movement of the brush is clear and strong. So, it resulted in the most balanced one of all calligraphy styles. Over the years, calligraphers were free to write in any of the five script styles, depending on the text’s function.

And we’re beaming affectionately.
Your achievement is awesome, my kid;
You’ve worked hard and you’ve passed the test.
We love you so, and we want you to know,
We think you’re the very best!

Mom, from the time I was really young,
I realized I had someone… you,
who always protected me,
who was always there for me no matter what.
You taught me to do the right thing,

If art preserves the culture of the Crow people, then Crow women are the keepers of that culture, developing it to reflect the modern day.
Fashion designer Bethany Yellowtail grew up riding horses and running in the fields and swimming in the river and being around her people in the Crow Nation and Northern Cheyenne Indian reservations in southeastern Montana. She knows first-hand the importance of art to maintaining native traditions. In 2015 she turned that knowledge into her own brand: B. Yellowtail. A year later, she created the B. Yellowtail Collective, made up of native artists, to foster economic opportunities for their communities. Many of those artists are women from different tribes but all of them preserve their culture and move it forward through their medium of choice.
Yellowtail and her team work for the native-owned business that’s rooted in community. Artists within the Collective typically receive 70% of profit from retail (零售) sales, and for a portion of the pandemic the brand has upped that to 100%. The extra money has, of course, increased artists’ income in the past year, but the relationship is interdependent: without the work of those artists, B. Yellowtail wouldn’t exist and native culture would feel the loss.
Dewanda Little Coyote is Yellowtail’s mother. Family is deeply important to their tribe. So is art, which often runs in the family—and along the matriarchal (母系的) side. Little Coyote picked up her entrepreneurial (企业家的) spirit from her parents, who owned a gift shop. “My parents said, ‘If you have hands, create something. Do something, and make a living off of that,’” she said. After her parents passed away, the artist began learning beading (串珠) earrings herself. Dentalium, a tusk shell often used in native jewelry, caught her eye in particular. “I love it, because back in the day our Cheyenne women wore a lot of dentalium,” she said. “So I wanted to give a contemporary look to that—to what our ancestors wore.
Yellowtail herself learned sewing from her aunts and grandmothers before moving to Los Angel in 2007 to study fashion design. Now, native women support native women—and matriarchal art evolves.
24. Why did Bethany Yellowtail set up B. Yellowtail?
A. To make their culture continue.
B. To become rich as soon as possible.
C. To reflect the modern fashions.
D. To inspire more women to work.
25. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. Native-owned businesses make money more easily.
B. The profit from the Collective has fallen sharply.
C. Local artists love to work in their community.
D. Artists’ income is related to the development of native culture.
26. Why is Dewanda Little Coyote mentioned in the text?
A. To prove she loves her daughter deeply.
B. To show how native culture is handed down.
C. To praise her efforts to help the young.
D. To appeal to more women to join in jewelry design.
27. What kind of person is Bethany Yellowtail?
A. Humorous, modest and cooperative.
B. Traditional, cautious and outgoing.
C. Independent, competitive and ambitious.
D. Creative, determined and selfless.

C
Just as people are born with a good singing voice, some people have a natural ability to draw realistically. You may have a classmate who can draw things that look just as they do in real life, or maybe that’s your talent.
Jennifer Drake studies these kids, who are known as “precocious(早熟的)realists. ” “These are kids who are able to draw very realistically, ” Drake says. While most 3-year-olds would use simple things such as sticks to represent, for example, an apple, precocious realists would be able to draw something round that actually resembles the fruit.
There is a specific skill that allows these young artists to excel at drawing realistically. “You have to avoid the overall context and focus on the detail,” Drake said. “And so what we find is, these precocious realists really excel at this, and they are really able to focus on the detail and avoid the whole.”
For Jarrett Krosoczka, discovering his love for art had nothing to do with getting rewarded. “When I revisit the sketchbooks(素描簿)I kept as a teenager, I’m not even looking at the artistic process but looking at the emotional journey I was on,” Krosoczka says. “Drawing is about understanding your emotions and what you see and experience in the world around you. Take your thoughts away from how it’s going to come out and just focus on the fact that you’re making marks on a page. And for me, it centers me. It’s a form of processing.”
When the pandemic started and kids needed activities to fill their time, Krosoczka began art classes online called “Draw Every Day”. These classes cover topics such as sketching in pencil, describing motion(运动)in your drawings and how colors are associated with certain moods. Although he has watched his students improve their skills, that’s not Krosoczka’s main objective. “It’s not about whether or not this piece comes out good,” he says. “You should be enjoying the process, and in every single piece that you make, you’re learning something for the next piece.”
28. What do precocious realists prefer to do?
A. Improve their ability to draw all the time.
B. Use simple things to represent complex ones.
C. Show the signs of giftedness in drawing.
D. Pay attention to the detail rather than the whole.
29. What does drawing mean to Krosoczka?
A. Dealing with his feelings. B. Getting material rewards.
C. Developing artistic skills. D. Having creative thoughts.
30. What is the main goal of Krosoczka’s online class “Draw Every Day”?
A. Students learn to draw something good.
B. Students are enjoyable while drawing.
C. Students use colors to represent movements.
D Students can improve their drawing skills.
31. What might be the best title for the text?
A. How Do You Know If You Are a Precocious Realist?
B. Do You Get Rewarded for Your Love of Art?
C. Is Artistic Skill Something You Are Born With?
D. Should You Focus on the Details in Your Drawing?
D 29. A 30. B 31. C

根据第四段“Drawing is about understanding your emotions and what you see and experience in the world around you.(绘画是理解你的情绪,以及你在周围世界所看到和经历的东西。)”和“And for me, it centers me. It’s a form of processing. (对我来说,它是我的中心。这是一种加工方式。)”可知, 对于 Krosoczka来说,绘画就是和情绪打交道。故选A。
根据最后一段“You should be enjoying the process, and in every single piece that you make, you’re learning something for the next piece.(你应该享受这个过程,在你制作的每一件作品中,你都在为下一件作品学习东西。)”

Poetry can be a source of distraction, of beauty, of truth. It can guide us when it gets difficult to manage the intensity of what we’re feeling. So it’s no surprise that people sought out poetry for comfort this past year.
Overall visits from readers to a poetry website went up thirty percent during the pandemic. “So many people have reached out wanting to discuss how much more poetry has meant to them this year, or how suddenly poetry has meant something to them,” says award-winning poet Naomi Shihab Nye, a teacher. All year, she says people have been asking her for advice on what poems to read or what poetry platforms to choose.
It wasn’t just the pandemic. This year saw an extraordinary economic trauma that we had all been experiencing. And poetry is an art form that has always been a resource in times of crisis. “A lot of people, especially in healthcare, haven’t known where to put their sorrow because there’s been too much and there’s been no time to navigate it,” she says.
Suzanne Olhmann, a nurse, who says she talks about poetry with her patients almost every day, shares the poem Kindness by Naomi with them, as well as with other healthcare workers. “Naomi’s poem really helps us understand that you can think of sorrow as a two-sided coin and on the other side of it is kindness,” she says.
Poet James Crews says that one reason why poetry has provided comfort this year is that it’s a powerful medium for working through change. “A lot of poems are read during funerals, weddings, graduations, and huge transitions in our lives,” he says. “And I feel that we’re all turning to poetry as a way of capturing and naming this huge transition that we’re all going through together right now. We need poems to remind us why the world is worth saving and also how we can take better care of ourselves.”
That is how poetry gives us hope each and every day. And even once the pandemic is over, poems will be here for us, holding space for relief and escape.
32 What can we infer from what Naomi said?
A. Poems need to be discussed and analyzed.
B. More people are interested in poetry today.
C. People don’t understand the meaning of poems.
D. Too many people ask for advice on writing poems.
33. What does the underlined word “trauma” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. An unpleasant thing. B. An unexpected result.
C. An impossible change. D. An insignificant challenge.
34. Why does the author give the example of Suzanne Olhmann?
A. To show the kindness of the nurse.
B. To prove the comforting role of poems.
C. To show the current popularity of poetry.
D. To prove the good relationship between nurses and patients.
35. What does Crews think of poetry?
A. It saves our joy in a broken world.
B. It reminds us to take care of the earth.
C. It describes the dark times of our life.
D. It helps us go through the changes in life.
B 33. A 34. B 35. D

根据第四段的“Naomi’s poem really helps us understand that you can think of sorrow as a two-sided coin and on the other side of it is kindness(娜奥米的诗确实帮助我们理解了你可以把悲伤看作是一枚两面硬币,它的另一面是善良)”可知,作者举这个例子是为了证明诗歌具有安慰的力量,故选B。

Einstein’s Opinions on Creative Thinking
“The greatest scientists are artists as well,” said Albert Einstein, one of the greatest physicists and an amateur pianist and violinist.
For Einstein, insight did not come from logic or mathematics. ____36____ As he told one friend, “All great achievements of science must start from intuitive (直觉的) knowledge. Imagination is more important than knowledge. ”
____37____ Surprisingly, it wasn’t the content of an idea, or its subject, that determined whether something was art or science, but how the idea was expressed. If what is seen and experienced is described in the language of logic, then it is science. If it is communicated and recognized intuitively, then it is art. ____38____ That’s why he said that great scientists were also artists.
____39____ “If I were not a physicist,” he once said, “I would probably be a musician. I often think in music and I see my life in terms of music. I get most joy in life out of music.” Music provided Einstein with a connection between time and space, which both combine spatial (空间的) and structural aspects. “The theory of relativity occurred to me by intuition and music is the driving force behind this intuition,” said Einstein. “My parents had me study the violin from the time I was six. ____40____”
A. But how did art differ from science for Einstein?
B. Instead, it came from intuition and inspiration.
C. My new discovery is the result of musical insight.
D. There is no doubt that my theory was a great breakthrough then.

B 37. A 38. E 39. F 40. C
空前说“For Einstein, insight did not come from logic or mathematics.(对爱因斯坦来说,洞察力不是来自逻辑或数学。)”,空格处应说究竟洞察力是来自于哪里,B选项“Instead, it came from intuition and inspiration.(相反,它来自直觉和灵感。)”
空后说“Surprisingly, it wasn’t the content of an idea, or its subject, that determined whether something was art or science, but how the idea was expressed.(令人惊讶的是,决定一件事是艺术还是科学的,不是思想的内容或主题,而是思想的表达方式。)”,A选项“But how did art differ from science for Einstein?(但对爱因斯坦来说,艺术和科学有什么不同呢?)”中的“art differ from science”和空后的“whether something was art or science”相呼应,引出了下文关于艺术和科学的区别的论述,因此A选项符合语境,故选A。
空前说“If what is seen and experienced is described in the language of logic, then it is science. If it is communicated and recognized intuitively, then it is art.(如果用逻辑的语言来描述所看到和经历的东西,那么它就是科学。如果它能被直观地传达和识别,那么它就是艺术。)”,空后说“That’s why he said that great scientists were also artists.(这就是为什么他说伟大的科学家也是艺术家。)”
空后说““If I were not a physicist,” he once said, “I would probably be a musician. I often think in music and I see my life in terms of music. I get most joy in life out of music.(“如果我不是物理学家,”他曾说,“我可能会成为音乐家。我经常用音乐思考,用音乐来看待我的生活。我从音乐中得到生活中最大的乐趣。”)”,由此可见,音乐对爱因斯坦帮助很大,F选项“Einstein also owed his scientific insight and intuition mainly to music.(爱因斯坦还把他的科学洞察力和直觉主要归功于音乐。)”说明了音乐对爱因斯坦的帮助很大,因此引起下文,符合语境,故选F。
【40题详解】
空前说“The theory of relativity occurred to me by intuition and music is the driving force behind this intuition(我是凭直觉想到相对论的,而音乐就是这种直觉背后的推动力)”,C选项“My new discovery is the result of musical insight.(我的新发现是音乐洞察力的结果。)”

Dear Mike,
I am glad to hear from you. I feel proud knowing you’re interested in Chinese poems.
As for my favourite poet, it must be Li Bai, who is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty. Living in a golden age of Chinese poetry, Li Bai is best known for his rich imagination. Equally impressive is his free expression of strong feelings.
Li Bai created a large number of wonderful poems throughout his life, many of which remain popular today. What I appreciate most are his landscape poems, in which he conveyed his strong love for nature, friends and the people. His poems have had a great influence on generations of poets both in and outside China.
Have you ever heard of Li Bai? Who is your favorite Chinese poet? Which Chinese poem do you like best? I am eager to get your answer. Please write to me soon!
Yours,
Li Hua

Life is full of surprises and twists. We do not know what will happen in the next second. But still, we continue to live our lives. One of the tools that help us is faith. Faith is like an inner voice that keeps reminding us about the positive outlook on life. And it helps us to keep going in spite of the situation in our life.
It was a hot day, and the sand was glittering(闪烁) like gold in a desert. Andrew, touring the place, lost his way in the desert. He could not find his way back, and the water in his bottle had run out. He needed to find water urgently. Otherwise, he would die due to dehydration(脱水). As he struggled to walk in the desert, he saw a small hut(小屋)in the distance.
At first, he thought it was just an illusion(幻觉). But he continued walking towards it, and as he got closer, he realized it was a real hut. He opened the door and found nobody there. It seemed like no one had been there for a very long time. He was surprised to see a hand water pump(抽水机), and it had all connections intact(完整的) and a pipe going into the ground. Then he started pumping, but there was no sign of water. And he continued his effort and gave up due to exhaustion.
He started searching the hut for any other source of water. Then he found a bottle of water hidden in the corner. He was happy, and when he was about to drink the water, he found a piece of paper attached to the bottle. This was written on the paper, “Please use this water to start the pump. It works. After you have done that, do not forget to fill up the bottle again. ”

There was a moment of relief on his face.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After reading the message on the paper, the man was confused. “Will the pump work if I use this water? Is the pump in good condition? If it is not true, then my last source of water will be wasted,” he thought. Finally, he poured the water from the bottle into the pump and pumped it. Soon,he heard a bubbling sound, and water started pouring out.
There was a moment of relief on his face. He drank the water and filled up his own bottle. Then he got washed and refilled the bottle from the hut. Then he looked around and saw a pencil and a map explaining the direction to the nearby village. He was happy that his faith in the water pump had worked. Similarly, he believed that the map would direct him to the right direction. Then he wrote on the paper, “Have faith. It works.” And he put both the bottle and the paper back to the exact place where he had found them.
