Human innovation (创新) has allowed people to explore space for decades. Within a space station, astronauts have enough air, food and water to complete missions of a year or longer without a resupply. But missions to further reaches of space are a different matter. Establishing a base on the moon or sending humans to Mars seems just on the horizon. That can only happen if innovative and foolproof ways are developed to supply humans with enough air, water and food.
One company, Interstellar Labs, has developed an advanced, closed loop system that can grow plants anywhere, even in space. They call their AI managed greenhouses BioPods and they are designed to be very efficient. In fact, Interstellar Labs claims that BioPods reduce the amount of land and water needed to produce food by 99 percent. That is not an impossible claim. BioPods don’t use any soil to grow plants, and the vast majority of water is recycled and recirculated.
Plants are grown inside BioPods using aeroponics, the practice of hanging plants in the air and spraying a mist of nutrient-rich water on their roots. By using aeroponics, the BioPod system carefully conserves water with amazing results. According to Interstellar labs, BioPod-grown plants are up to 300 times more productive than traditionally grown plants, using only a small amount of water.
The conditions inside of a BioPod are controlled by AI, which can change anything from the lighting to the temperature and humidity to maximize growth. This optimizes (使最优化) growing conditions no matter what the environment is outside, including the emptiness of space.
The BioPods themselves can be built in almost any environment, too. The pod’s structure is made with a 3D printer using raw materials in liquid form. The inside part is sealed with an inflatable membrane (充气膜) that is also 3D-printed. This means that a BioPod could be built right on the surface of the moon or Mars, making transporting a large structure unnecessary.
Like most technology developed for space exploration, BioPods can also be used on Earth to provide highly efficient food production systems even in the harshest environments.
24. In writing paragraph 1, the author aims to____________.
A. present a topic B. make a comparison
C. reach a conclusion D. propose a definition
25. Which of the following best describes Biopods?
A. They are widely used for space exploration.
B. They are highly productive and efficient greenhouses.
C. They are easy to operate without need for soil or water.
D. They are designed to be used in harsh environments on Earth.
26. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Food Consumption in Space Station
B. Space Exploration with BioPods
C. Growing Food in Space Pods
D. 3D Printers Used in Space Lab
27. What is the writer’s attitude to the BioPod?
A. Positive. B. Cautious. C. Ambiguous. D. Disapproving.

At Jenner Park primary School in Wales, pupils between the ages of seven and nine are writing letters to residents of a local care home. The initiative sees children and their elderly pen pals(笔友)exchange updates about their lives, helping to build relationships between generations while also giving the children an understanding of the value of writing letters by hand—an activity that's becoming less and less common.
Laura Johnson, the teacher who coordinates(协调)the scheme at Jenner Park, says: “All of our writing is for a purpose. That's the key in getting children to value handwriting. As soon as you put an audience there, knowing that someone out there is going to be reading it—whether that's parents or another group of children—there's always the real sense of pride to go along with it,” says Johnson.
The school maintains a focus on handwriting throughout the years, from dedicated handwriting classes in the prep school to a calligraphy club offered to the older groups. It has created something called the pen license. It allows younger children to move from using a pencil to pen once they've reached a certain standard. "There's a lot of excitement about reaching that pen licence stage," says Johnson.
Johnson adds that developing students' writing in this way matters for their life after school: “For us, it's important that we create citizens of the future who have a set of life skills that can make them successful." The dominance of technology is a challenge, she admits, but she also believes both tools have their place. “Obviously we're competing with technology continuously.” she says. “And I know there are people there saying you don't need to bother about handwriting because tech is out there. But we don't see it as competing We're trying to get pupils to realize that there's a place for handwriting and to know when it's important to use each.”
28. Why does the school launch the initiative?
A. To help children to find the meaning of handwriting.
B. To encourage children to show pity for the aged.
C. To persuade children to choose proper courses.
D. To urge children to acknowledge the audience.
29.What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the school?
A. Its after-class activities. B. Its practice in handwriting.
C. Its academic achievements. D. Its innovation in technology.
30.What can we infer from the last paragraph about handwriting?
A. It will win against technology. B. It will give way to technology.
C. It will co-exist with technology. D. It will cause confusion to people.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Handwriting promotes the pen pal scheme
B. Slow communication reduces misunderstanding
C. Creative ideas for dealing with challenges gain popularity
D. Putting pen to paper contributes to a love of the written word
D
Like every dog, every disease now seems to have its day. World Tuberculosis (肺结核) Day is on Saturday March 24th.
Tuberculosis was once terribly fashionable. Dying of “consumption” seems to have been a favorite activity of 19th-century artists, which has, however, been neglected of late. Researchers in the field never tire of pointing out that TB kills a lot of people. According to figures released earlier this week by the World Health Organization, 1.6 million people died of the disease in 2005, compared with about 3m for AIDS and 1m for malaria. But it receives only a fraction of the research budget devoted to AIDS. America’s National Institutes of Health, for example, spends 20 times as much on AIDS as on TB. Nevertheless, everyone seems to be getting in on the TB-day act this year.
The Global Fund, an international organization responsible for fighting all three diseases but best known for its work on AIDS, claims that its anti-TB activities since 2002 have saved the lives of over 1m people. The World Health Organization has issued a report that contains some good news. Although the number of TB cases is still rising, the rate of illness is growing only because the population itself is going up.
Even drug companies are involved. Eli Lilly announced a $50m boost to its MDRTB Global Partnership. MDR stands for multi-drug resistance, and it is one of the reasons why TB is back in the spotlight. Careless treatment has caused drug-resistant problems to evolve all over the world. The course of drugs needed to clear the disease completely takes six months, and persuading people to stay that course once their symptoms have gone is hard. Unfortunately, those infected with MDR have to be treated with less effective, more poisonous and more costly drugs.
The other reason TB is back is its relationship to AIDS. AIDS does not kill directly. Rather, HIV weakens the body’s immune system and exposes the sufferer to secondary infections. Of these, TB is one of the most serious. Some anti-TB drugs interfere with the effect of some anti-HIV drugs. Conversely, in about 20% of cases where a patient has both diseases, anti-HIV drugs make the tuberculosis worse. The upshot is that 125 years after human beings worked out what caused TB, it is still a serious threat.
32. The first sentence “Like every dog, every disease now seems to have its day.” means __________.
A. every dog enjoys good luck or success sooner or later
B. human beings can deal with problems caused by disease
C. tuberculosis becomes a serious infection disease
D. people attach importance to tuberculosis recently
33. By referring to AIDS in Paragraph 2, the author intends to show ________.
A. the US government is reluctant to spend millions of dollars on tuberculosis
B. the death rate of AIDS is higher than that of tuberculosis
C. the officials don’t pay much attention to the research of tuberculosis
D. compared with AIDS, tuberculosis can be cured effectively
34. Which of the following is best defines the word “upshot” (Para.5)?
A. Outcome. B. Reason. C. Achievement. D. Project.
35. Which of the following proverbs is closest in meaning to the message the passage tries to convey?
A. Forgive and forget.
B. Forgotten, but not gone.
C. When the wound is healed, the pain is forgotten.
D. Every dog is brave at his own door.

Rising through Stages to Realize Ourselves
Many modern people have the problem that they don’t know who they are and what their purpose is. ____36____ Once high school seniors graduate, they seem to lose their identity. They once studied hard, but after they stop working, they begin to lose their way.
In the theory of the Hierarchy of Needs, Abraham Maslow put forward a similar situation, which consists of the five levels of a person’s need. The fifth and final level is self- realization, which is where our final achievement lies. ____37____
I think self-realization has three major aspects. The first stage is acceptance, the second stage is discovery and the last stage is perseverance.
Acceptance is the first stage. We should be reminded that we are all born unique, so we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. ___38____ Being objective and yet tolerant is the key to acceptance.
Once we’ve accepted ourselves, we can discover what we are interested in and what we want to be. Many people tend to go along with social expectations. ___39____ So before we start working towards a purpose, we should ask ourselves “Is this what we truly desire?” and “Is this going to change the situation we’re in?”
The last stage is perseverance. ____40____ Those who can self-realize are people who focus on the things they want to change.
Through the three stages, we could gain recognition of ourselves. And by this point, whatever our lives were like, we would be able to stand tall, confident of ourselves.
A. It’s nothing to a man of perseverance.
B. But indeed we should live for ourselves.
C. Only by acceptance of the past can we change it.
D. This is especially common among college students.
E. It is the process of knowing ourselves and finding a purpose.
F. Exploring our potential isn’t going to be done in a short time.
G. Only when we understand these can we pursue them or change them.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my parents first told me I was going to a youth camp, I was not happy. And, to be honest, I was a little scared. My parents said they knew what was best for me. Most of my summer vacations were spent with family at home. I’d miss swimming at swimming pool, riding bikes to park nearby and picnicking there. Why would I want my perfect summer in the suburbs to be interrupted by some stupid youth camp where I wouldn’t know anyone? Would they be funny? What camp activities would there be?
I pouted(撅嘴) angrily in the backseat while my dad drove me to the youth camp for the first day. We went past the familiar city amusement parks and finally reached the destination--Lake Erie. I was also upset because the camp organization sent a list of things we should pack and a sari(纱丽) was one of them. As a tomboy(假小子) who lived in jean shorts and T-shirts, a girly fit wasn’t on my list of favorite things, not to mention the performance on the last day.
Wearing my best frown, I walked past screaming reunited campers and dragged my way to the girls’ cabin. Its tragic emptiness was a perfect match for my pathetic state of mind. I wanted to run after my parents and beg them to take me home, but instead I pulled my bag on an unoccupied bunk bed(上下铺) and unwillingly unpacked. Suddenly, the cabin door sprang open and Mishti bounced in. She threw a lot of questions at me. Where was I from? What school did I go to? Was I good at softball?
Mishti was an experienced camper there. She introduced me to all her friends. We all came from Indian backgrounds and grew up in the same region. We all used the same brand of mosquito repellent(驱蚊剂) recommended strongly by our Indian immigrant parents.

读后续写 (满分25分)
My initial worry disappeared and I had great fun there. During the daytime, we busied ourselves with camp life activities like hiking, arts and crafts and kickball. At night, we tucked in our bunk beds, passed around all kinds of comic books and shared with each other our personal stories. My fearless roommate, Mishti was everything I wanted to grow up to be. She taught us many things, including dances that we’d perform for our parents on the last day of camp. I was no longer that moody teenager in the back seat.
I even helped styling the girls’ hair on performance day. I, a tomboy, wore that glittery sari with my head up proudly and danced with my new friends elegantly. My mom exchanged a glance with father and they smiled broadly when watching our performance. As the sun dipped into the lake’s horizon, my new friends and I held each other tightly and vowed to return next summer. Sometimes, the thing you’re most uncomfortable with at first turns out to be the most memorable experience of your life. In the end, my parents actually did know best.
听力原文:
Text 1
M: Last year, my friends and I went on a twoweek bus tour of Russia.
W: Hmm, that could be fun, but sometimes I get sick when I ride in cars or buses.
M: You could take a train trip across Russia. My sister did that a couple of years ago.
Text 2
W: What are you taking this year?
M: Mostly literature courses.
W: Oh, really. Are they any good?
M: Some of them are. Except for Professor Scott's class. I mean, the books are interesting, and the lectures are great, but his tests are so hard.
Text 3
M: Are you ready to order?
W: Yes, I'd like to start with the salad, please.
M: Okay. And what would you like for your main dish?
W: Hmm. I'll have the steak. And I'd like some chocolate ice cream for dessert.
Text 4
W: How is the jacket, sir?
M: It feels a little too tight around the chest. What do you think?
W: Well, that style is designed to be form fitting. I think it suits you.
M: Hmm. The price is right, but I can't imagine wearing it for very long. Can you bring a larger one?
Text 5
W: Honey, how about taking kids to the amusement park this weekend? It is said their classmates will go there too
M: Oh, definitely! Let me check the weather forecast first.
Text 6
M: Hi Joanna. This is Steven. I'm afraid I can't make this Friday's fitness training.
W: Oh? Are you OK?
M: Well, I'm not too bad. I had this really awful cold with a temperature, which took about a week to get rid of. Fortunately it's over now. But I injured my foot playing basketball yesterday and I need to have an operation on it Friday. It's nothing serious, though. I'll be back at fitness training very soon.
W: Oh good! Well, you take care then.
Text 7
M: Is your room at the hotel okay?
W: It's not bad. It's a goodsized room, so that's nice. The bathroom is absolutely tiny, though. And it doesn't have a plug, so l can't use my hairdryer in there!
M: That's inconvenient.
W: At least I can look out at the beautiful park across the street. I like to be able to see trees from my window.
M: That sounds lovely. Is there a lot in the room?
W: No, not really. Just an old TV, but no refrigerator or anything else. It was really hot last night and I couldn't sleep, so I spoke to the manager about it. She sent up an electric fan as soon as I called.
M: That should help.
Text 8
M: Did you know bees can communicate with one another?
W: Really? How?
M: They use body language to show which direction the food is in, how far away it is, and how much food is available.
W: No kidding…
M: Yeah, see that one there? See how she's going around and around in circles, like she's dancing? That means the food is nearby. And the faster she dances, the more food is available. If the food is farther away, the bee points toward it with her body.
W: How do you know so much about bees?
M: I studied biology in college and I think it is interesting to read books about insects.
Text 9
W: Well, I know the computing conference is for three days but actually I want to attend on Friday and Saturday only. Will that work out to be any cheaper?
M: Let me have a look. Well, you could register for the two days separately, but that wouldn't actually save you very much as it still costs each day. In fact, if you could register for the three days, you also get an invitation to a free dinner on Saturday night, so that's probably the better option.
W: Right, I'll do that. How much will the fees be in that case?
M: It's $75.
W: All right. I'd like to register for the full three days. Now, can I pay that by credit card?
M: I'm afraid not. You'll have to send a cheque to us, or you can pay in cash at the conference office.
W: Fine. So it's probably the easiest if I pay by cheque. How about accommodation? I guess that's not included in the price?
M: No, I'm sorry, but there's a very reasonable guest house which is $25 per night. And I think that includes your breakfast. But If you're interested you'll need to book soon, because there's always a heavy demand for them.
W:OK. I'd book for 2 nights. Is it close to the conference center?

M: Do you have a camera and love traveling? If so, our annual photography competition run by the Travel section of The Guardian is for you. The winners of each month's competition will also see their shots displayed in the endofyear exhibition for the public at The Guardian's offices in London. There will be a different theme for each month. Members of The Guardian travel writing team and photographers will judge the monthly entries and the winners.
To enter you must be living in the UK from the time you submit your entry into the competition to the time you are selected as a winner. The competition is open to both amateurs and professionals.
The yearly winners chosen from the 12 monthly winners will go on an amazing fournight trip to Swedish Lapland. The host for this holiday is Fredrik Broman, who has been a nature photographer for 21 years. Fredrik will assist the winners and other participants in photographing a wide variety of winter subjects.
Included in the prize: return flights from the UK, four nights' accommodations with full board, and fully qualified wilderness guides, and instructors.
The yearly winners will be required to write a report of the trip, which will be printed in the Travel section of The Guardian at a later date. Your name will of course appear with the article and photos.
