A couple carved out a life on a small rock island, among the seabirds. The Bass Rock is a small volcanic island just off the east coast of Scotland. Remarkable in the Scottish imagination for its landform and location in the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh, the island has had a thin and intermittent(断断续续)human population across the centuries. Its most notable and sustained inhabitants are the northern gannets that have lived on the island throughout recorded history. With a population of roughly 150,000 birds, their home is the largest in the world.
The English naturalist June Nelson is one of the few people who have lived on the Bass Rock. For three years in the early 1960s. she and her late husband, the ornithologist Bryan Nelson, who was researching gannets at the University of Oxford, made the island their temporary home. Living and working out of a small church, they devoted themselves to observing and recording the behaviors and ecology of the birds. The then-newly-married had little contact with the outside world, but led a happy life together.
In the short documentary Life on the Rocks, Nelson revisits her full and focused years on the Bass Rock. Combining cinematic black-and-white shots of the island with music. the UK director George Pretty creates a vivid account of Nelson’s unforgettable time there, as well as her emotional return. Mining Nelson’s memories and old photographs, the film explores how the husband-and-wife team found happiness on this unique patch of Earth, and among its many birds. But, more than just a fondness for the past, Nelson communicates an urgency to protect the plummeting(暴跌)global sea-bird population, which has declined by 70% in her lifetime, asking “What right have we to deprive(剥夺)future generations of this wonderful place?”
24. What do we know about the Bass Rock from Paragraph 1?
A. It is owned by a couple. B. It is gannets’ largest habitat.
C. It is heavily populated. D. It is famous for its scenery.
25. Why did June Nelson live on the island?
A. To research birds. B. To make their home.
C. To live a happy life. D. To stay away from the outside.
26. What does Life on the Rocks intend to tell us?
A. Nelson’s research about the birds. B. The couple’s fondness for the past.
C. Nelson’s concerns about the birds’ situation. D. Nelson’s description of the island.
27. Which best describes the couple’s life on the island?
A. Tough but worthwhile. B. Dangerous but admirable.
C. Smooth and fruitful. D. Inspiring and lucky.

VARK is a questionnaire that helps with your learning by suggesting the strategies you should be using. According to VARK, some people learn best by reading materials, while others are more visually-oriented and must see something to understand. Others might fall into the auditory learning subtype, meaning they tend to understand materials by listening to instructions. There are also kinesthetic (动觉的) learners, or those who learn best through hands-on activities.
Learning style theories had their popularity in the 1990s, when Beth Rogowsky was just starting as a middle school teacher. “At that time, when my students were given some learning material, if they disliked reading it, they could listen to it instead as long as they’d like to listen to others reading it; whatever they preferred, they would be encouraged to do it,” says Rogowsky, who is now an associate professor of teaching and learning at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania.
But when it comes to preferred learning styles, there’s a problem. The idea of using learning styles emerged in the 1980s as many researchers voiced their support, but few actually tested their concepts to confirm the validity in randomized, experimental settings. In the 2000s, when researchers started to do just that, they found little evidence that matching students to their supposed learning style helped them memorize information better.
Rogowsky herself has confirmed the belief that learning styles don’t hold up in her recent studies. In one study published in Frontiers in Psychology this year, Rogowsky and her colleagues tested fifth-graders with preferred auditory and visual learning styles. Students were given standardized reading tests, in both written and audio formats. The team didn’t uncover a relationship between their preferred learning styles and academic performance, according to Rogowsky.
The team’s study noted that a preference to learn material using a certain method could mask skill lack. “Someone who prefers to lean by listening instead of visual approaches might just have underdeveloped reading skills. Letting students learn in their preferred manner doesn’t push them to improve weaker skill sets,” Rogowsky says. “If you need to improve your skills, don’t just keep doing what’s easy to you.”
28. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To explain the complexity of the learning process.
B. To show different people have different learning styles.
C. To inspire people to actively engage in a questionnaire.
D. To suggest using VARK to choose efficient learning styles.
29. What did Beth Rogowsky use to do when she was a middle school teacher?
A. Encourage students to learn creatively.
B. Help students improve their reading and listening ability.
C. Allow students to use their preferred learning style.
D. Provide varied reading materials for students to choose from.
30. What does the underlined word “validity” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Correctness. B. Faulty. C. Arrangement. D. Budget.
31. What can we learn from Beth Rogowsky’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Students need to focus on their academic performance.
B. Students should stick to their favorite learning materials.
C. Students hiding skill lack can boost their confidence
D. Students should go beyond a certain preferred learning style.

The San Diego County Water Authority has an unusual plan to use the city’s scenic San Vicente Reservoir (水库) to store solar power so it’s available after sunset. The project could help unlock America’s clean energy future.
Perhaps ten years from now, if all goes smoothly, large underground pipes will connect this lake to a new reservoir, a much smaller one, built in a nearby valley about 1100 feet higher. When the sun is high in the sky, California’s abundant solar power will pump water into that upper reservoir. It’s a way to store the electricity. When the sun goes down and solar power disappears, operators would open a valve (阀门) and the force of 8 million tons of water, falling back downhill through those same pipes, would drive machines capable of producing 500 megawatts of electricity for up to eight hours. That’s enough to power 130, 000 typical homes.
“It’s a water battery!” says Neena Kuzmich, Deputy Director of Engineering for the water authority. She says energy storage facilities like these will be increasingly important as California starts to rely more on energy from wind and solar, which produce electricity on their own schedules, without considering the demands of consumers.
Californians learned this during a heat wave this past summer. “Everybody in the state of California got a text message at 5:30 in the evening to turn off their appliances,” Kuzmich says. The sun was going down, solar generation was disappearing, and the remaining power plants, many of them burning gas, couldn’t keep up with demand. The reminder worked: People stopped using so much power, and the grid (电网) survived.
Yet earlier on that same day, there was so much solar power available that the grid couldn’t take it all. Grid operators turned away more than 2000 megawatt hours of electricity that solar generators could have delivered, enough to power a small city. That electricity was wasted. There was no way to store it for later, when operators desperately needed it.
32. What is the function of Paragraph 2?
A. To present the importance of a reservoir. B. To recall a situation in recent ten years.
C. To introduce the usage of solar energy. D. To explain a way to store electricity.
33. What may Neena Kuzmich agree?
A. The reservoir serves to store energy.
B. Californians need little solar energy.
C. People used to waste too much energy.
D. New storage ways are environmentally friendly.
34. Why was a text message sent to everyone in California?
A. To stop people working. B. To warn people of danger.
C. To tell people the sunset time. D. To remind people of lack of energy.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Scenic San Vicente Reservoir B. San Diego County Energy Plan
C. Water Batteries to Store Solar Power D. Machines to Store Water in California

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Cathy, my mom, whose pet phrase (口头禅) was “Never give up”, was our family’s beacon of positivity. It was not a title she earned without concerted (一致的) effort, however. When she was only thirty years old, her husband was killed in a car accident and she was left to raise me alone.
My mom could have lived under a black cloud. Instead, she challenged herself to find joy every day. Leading by example, Mom taught me just how much one could accomplish with a positive attitude. She has taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren-Max and Charley.
One hot summer afternoon, my mom and her two grandsons, having spent two hours building sand castles and collecting sea shells on the beach, sank into their beach chairs to have a rest. How they longed for delicious ice cream to cool themselves, especially the two kids!
Suddenly, my mom heard the familiar loud clang (叮当声) of the ice-cream man’s bell from her beach chair. She turned quickly and saw him briefly, spotting his distinctive green shirt and catching the gleam of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared over the dunes (沙丘).
Happily, the ice-cream man’s visit was a daily occurrence at the beach, although the lag time between the sound of his bell and the departure of his truck was not long. One must be quick enough to catch him to buy the ice cream.
Max and Charley were in great disappointment when they didn’t catch him in time that day because they really wanted to have a taste of those cool ice-creams. That was until my mom’s eyes sparkled and she said to the kids, “Never give up!” She explained to the kids that the truck might be gone, but they should be able to catch him up at its next stop. And the kids agreed immediately.
注意:1,续写词数应为150左右: 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

读后续写【答案】 So Max and Charley, accompanied by my mom, began their mission. Max tried his best to lead this running team. Again, they heard a slight clang of the ice-cream man’s bell! “Be quick, Charley! The ice-cream might be over there!” Max yelled happily. Unfortunately, as they kept running, the sound gradually disappeared. So exhausted as they were, the two grandsons stopped, wiping the sweat from their faces. “Dear, never give up! Maybe the man who heard our yell is waiting for us at the square!”, my mom kept running.
Max and Charley, encouraged by my mom, ran another three blocks. Just as my mom had predicted, the truck was parked at the square, where several kids were queueing for ice-cream. When it was in their turn, Max said loudly, “Three ice-cream Sir!” Later, they sat down under the shade of a tree. Scoop by scoop, they enjoyed the most delicious ice-cream in the world. Also, it was from this experience that Max and Charley were taught the lesson of persisting and never giving up.
