    Famous bookstores worldwide
    Libreria Acqua Alta, Venice
It translates to “high water bookshop”. This bookstore tries hard to prevent its books getting flooded. After all, the bookstore lies in a city famous for its floods, and it opens right onto a canal. Kate Storm says, “Unlike many other bookstores, Libreria Acqua Alta stores its books in bathtubs, various types of boats in addition to high shelves. This makes the bookstore a famous one worldwide.”
    Powell’s, Portland
Powell’s is the largest independent bookstore worldwide. Michael Powell started his first bookstore by borrowing $3,000 in 1970 in Chicago. His father, Walter Powell, worked with him for a summer in his Chicago store and liked it so much. His father later went home to Portland and opened his own bookstore, Powell’s. Soon, Michael joined his father, and now the store is run by Michael’s daughter, Emily.
El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires
Built by architects Peró and Torres Armengol, it first opened as a theater in 1919, particularly famous for its tango performances. Ten years later, it was turned into a cinema, and was the first in the city to screen films with sound. In 2000, the theater was in danger of being pulled down. But it was purchased by Grupo Ilhsa, redecorated and reopened as a bookstore, with the beautiful original opera boxes and original pictures on the roof remaining. It now draws 1 million visitors a year.
    Livraria Lello, Porto
Livraria Lello is famous for its old-world great decoration, like its special stairs. It was opened in 1906 by brothers José and António Lello — by then already booksellers — and designed by architect Xavier Esteves. Livraria Lello is now such a successful tourist attraction that they can charge a lot to get in.
    1. What’s Libreria Acqua Alta famous for according to Kate Storm?
    A. Its books’ types. B. Its way of storing books.
    C. Its closeness to Venice. D. Its shape as a special boat.
    2. What can we know about Powell’s?
    A. It’s a family business. B. It has a 50-year history.
    C. It’s open only in summer. D. It’s the largest bookstore worldwide.

    A. They once served as a great cinema.
    B. They belong to José and António Lello.
    C. They have historic and architectural value.
    D. They are free for tourists wanting a visit.

The deadliest wildfire in California’s history broke out on November 8, 2018. It burned for 17 days and consumed 153,336 acres. In all the fire cost $16.5 billion in damage, destroying nearly 19,000 buildings, living 50,000 homes and killing 85. The beauty of this beautifully named place was gone.
Shane Grammer works as a creative director for Disne’s theme parks. When his childhood friend Shane Edwards posted pictures of his white chimney — the only part of his house to survive — Grammer felt very sad, but didn’t know how to help him. And then he had an idea. “I’ve got to paint that chimney,” he told Inside Edition. “And it was an opportunity for me to express myself and be an artist.” On December 31, Grammer spent three hours spray-painting a black-and-white image of a woman on the chimney — a reminder, perhaps, of the beauty of life, or even just of life itself.
Grammer posted the image on Instagram. And many viewers said that he had really brought beauty and hope. Suddenly, Grammer realized that what he had thought was that a purely artistic expression had morphed into something deeper, the nature of true art. “When the first mural (壁画) moved so many people in this community, I knew I had to come back up,” Grammer told KRCR-TV. Over a period of three months, he returned eight times, painting 17 portraits of victims and figures of the Bible on walls, pickups, and broken buildings. “There is hope,” he explains. “There is beauty in the ashes.”
Grammer’s work in Paradise has now become a movement. He has traveled to many places painting murals in dark places that badly needed some light, an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico, for example. “I want to do something powerful and create art that moves people,” he says.
That first painting, on the chimney in Paradise, survived only a few months — the bulldozer(推土机) is a cruel art critic. Grammer couldn’t be more delighted. It means that the spirit of Paradise is rising again.
    4. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
    A. The cause of the fire.
    B. The damage caused by the fire.
    C. The economic loss which resulted from the fire.
    D. The reason why the beautiful place was gone.
    5. What does the underlined part “morphed into” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Broke out. B. Launched out.
    C. Moved into. D. Turned into.
    6. Why did the painting on the chimney survive only a few months?
    A. Some people disliked it.
    B. Grammer wasn’t satisfied with it.
    C. The town was under reconstruction.
    D. The bulldozer knocked it down by accident.
    7. Which word best describes Grammer?
    A. Caring. B. Casual.
    C. Humorous. D. Indifferent.

From talking robots to driverless vehicles, technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet we still have no cure for the common cold.
Why can’t we stop the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses that belong to the rhinoviruses (鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold.
However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein (蛋白质) that the viruses need. All the viruses were unable to replicate (复制) inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein called SETD3.
To identify the gene which produces the specific protein, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes in the human genome(基因组). Namely, they randomly disabled a single gene in each of the cells, so that the cells lacked one or another of every gene in our genome. These genetically modified cells were then exposed to the rhinoviruses, which cause the common cold. The team then looked at which gene was missing in cells that continued to grow. As it turned out, the one that stood out was SETD3, which makes a protein of the same name.
Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily disable the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance,” said Carette.
    8. Which does Peter Barlow think is a problem for fighting the common cold?
    A. The poor immunity of patients. B. The large variety of viruses.
    C. The lack of enough cures. D. The side effects of drugs.
    9. What do we know about the gene-editing study in Paragraph 4?
    A. All genetically modified cells survived. B. Some genes in our genome were ignored.
    C. It located the gene responsible for SETD3. D. It exposed the harm of the rhinoviruses.
    10. How should we stay away from the common cold according to Carette?
    A. Apply gene-editing to human genes. B. Avoid contacts with colds patients.
    C. Prevent cold viruses from mutating. D. Develop a drug to switch off SETD3.
    11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
    A. Potential defense found for cold viruses B. Secrets behind the human genes
    C. Real causes of the common cold D. Puzzles over rhinoviruses solved

Scientists have shown a new printing process that can turn just about any piece of paper into a waterproof keyboard (防水键盘) that you can fold up and put in your pocket and it doesn’t require a power source.
The technique makes use of a special coating that’s repellent (排斥的) to liquids and dust, which allows multiple circuit (电路) layers to then be printed on top of the paper without any dirt between the layers. On the other side of the paper, standard ink printing can then be used to point out where the pressure points (the buttons) are, and what they represent. These layers can be printed in any design you want. What’s more, no batteries are required to operate the finished keyboard. It’s able to be fully powered from the touch of the operator and the mechanical energy that’s produced.
“This is the first time a self-powered paper-based electronic device has been shown,” says engineer Ramses Martinez, from Purdue University. When the printed parts of the paper get pressed, they’re able to send signals over Bluetooth to another device a laptop, for example. You’ve then got a lightweight, foldable keyboard that can be taken anywhere and easily wiped clean when needed.
The technology is great. It’s good for the environment (the paper can be simply recycled again), and it’s flexible — as well as being water-resistant and completely customizable. These paper devices are cheap to produce as well — less than $0.25 each, according to the researchers. Potential uses include smart packaging, or where temporary input devices are required.
“I expect this technology to help the user interact with food packaging checking whether the food is safe to be consumed, or allowing users to sign the package that arrives at home by dragging their fingers over the box to properly identify themselves as the owner of the package,” says Martinez. Additionally, our group showed that simple paper sheets from a notebook can be transformed into music player interfaces (界面) for users to choose songs and play them.
    12. What does the keyboard look like according to the text?
    A. It consists of several layers of paper.
    B. It is printed on both sides of the paper.
    C. It is smaller than an ordinary keyboard.
    D. It has its buttons hidden behind the layers.
    13. How is the keyboard connected to other devices?
    A. By giving signals via Bluetooth.
B.By being attached to other devices.
    C. By getting any part of the paper pressed.
    D. By using the power produced by other devices.
    14. What can we infer about the keyboard from the text?
    A. It is portable and beautiful.
    B. It is convenient and fashionable.
    C. It is high-powered and permanent.
    D. It is eco-friendly and economical.
    15. What do Martinez’s words in the last paragraph show?
    A. The technology makes food packaging easy.
    B. The technology has been used in food industry.
    C. The technology can be employed in more fields.
    D. The technology will improve the quality of food.

根据文章第一段中“Kate Storm says, “Unlike many other bookstores, Libreria Acqua Alta stores its books in bathtubs, various types of boats in addition to high shelves.(Kate Storm说:“与许多其他书店不同,Libreria Acqua Alta书店除了高书架外,还把书存放在浴缸、各种类型的船上。”)”和最后一句话“This makes the bookstore a famous one worldwide.(这使得书店成为世界知名的书店。)”可知,Libreria Acqua Alta因书的储存方式而著名。故选B项。
2.推理判断题。根据文章第二段中“Soon, Michael joined his father, and now the store is run by Michael’s daughter, Emily.(不久,Michael加入了他的父亲,现在这家店由Michael的女儿Emily经营。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第三段中“Built by architects Peró and Torres Armengol, it first opened as a theater in 1919, particularly famous for its tango performances.(它由建筑师Peró和Torres Armengol建造,于1919年首次作为剧院开放,以其探戈表演而闻名。)”以及文章最后一段中“Livraria Lello is famous for its old-world great decoration, like its special stairs.(以其古老世界的装饰而闻名,像其特殊的楼梯。)”和“It was opened in 1906 by brothers José and António Lello — by then already booksellers — and designed by architect Xavier Esteves.(它于1906年由当时已经是书商的José和António Lello兄弟开张,由建筑家Xavier Esteves设计)”可知,两家书店均具有历史的和建筑的价值。故选C项。

B 5. D 6. C 7. A
结合第一段的第一句“The deadliest wildfire in California’s history broke out on November 8, 2018.(2018年11月8日,加利福利亚爆发了历史上最严重的山火。)” 因此“The damage caused by the fire.(火灾造成的损失情况)”最具有概括性,符合题意。故选B项。
根据第二段中“And it was an opportunity for me to express myself and be an artist.(这是一个展现自己和成为艺术家的机会。)” 可根据第三段第二句“And many viewers said that he had really brought beauty and hope.(许多观众说他真的给人们带来了美和希望。)”
根据最后一段“That first painting, on the chimney in Paradise, survived only a few months —the bulldozer(推土机) is a cruel art critic.(他在天堂镇的烟囱上画的第一幅画仅存活了几个月 ——推土机是个残酷的艺术评论家。格拉默格外高兴。这意味着天堂镇的活力再次恢复了。)”可知,几个月后,推土机就把烟囱上的这幅画给推倒了,因为天堂镇的重建工作要开始了。故选C项。
4.推理判断题。根据第二段“Grammer felt very sad, but didn’t know how to help him.(格拉默感到很难过,但他又不知道自己如何帮助他。)” 以及第四段最后一句“‘I want to do something powerful and create art that moves people,’ he says.”(他说:“我想做一些有影响力的事情,创造可以感动人的艺术。”)

B 9. C 10. D 11. A

1.根据上文“These results in lower blood pressure, a decrease in stress and healthy muscles .(这些会导致血压降低,压力减轻,(形成)健康的肌肉。)”说明瑜伽对于身体的益处,与E项中“health benefits”对应,空格处承上启下,以及下文“With poses ranging from simple to challenging, yoga gives your mind something to think about while you exercise.(瑜伽的姿势从简单到富有挑战性,让你的头脑在锻炼时有了思考的空间。)”

4.根据上文“Then drop the head and neck toward your mat, pull your stomach muscles in tight, and round your back up towards the ceiling.(然后将头部和颈部朝着垫子,收紧腹部肌肉,将背部向上朝着天花板。)”说明这是基础动作的准备,与B选项中的保持那个姿势对应,而下文“As you exhale, return to the center, then drop your belly toward the mat,(呼气时,回到垫子中心,然后腹部朝着垫子向下,)”的“exhale”与选项中的“breathe in and out”(一呼一吸)对应,故选B项。
5.根据下文“Gradually add more asanas to your practice.(逐渐在练习时加入更多体式。)”

故填were created。
