A New Addition to the Family
For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.
However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.
Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.
Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

My dad doesn’t write me letters. And he doesn’t always remember my birthday or wedding anniversary -- or even how old I am sometimes.
But I only need to look around me to be reminded of his love. He restored a 100-year-old rocking chair after I told him how much I wanted one. When I moved into my first apartment, he spent his weekends in a small space replacing pipes. And when I lost a blue stone from a favorite necklace, he worked his magic with common stuff
The four greatest words I know are “Dad will build it”.
I could never forget when I was seven, one day we walked by a toy store window. There in the corner was the most unusual doll house had ever seen. It was shaped like an upturned log. Little oval windows were cut into it decorated with white curtains and framed by tiny balconies.
“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful? Do you think Santa Clause will bring it to me?”
Dad looked at the $100 price tag -- too high a figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn't afford this house,” he joked, hiking up his belt, as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart, ”Dad probably hoped I’d forget about the doll house, but I kept talking about it.
On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the faint light, I made out some wrapped boxes under the tree-- but none large enough to contain my doll house.
Dad could see my disappointment.

In our kitchen, there was a wooden table and three chairs — one for Dad, one for Mom, and one for me. In the cellar (地窖), the very last jar of apple jam lay quietly on the shelf, waiting to be turned into an apple pie when Dad came back. Mom sat at one end of the table. I sat in the middle between her and Dad. I tried not to look at Dad’s empty place. Dad had gone to the city to look for work for a long time.
Every night, I lay awake in bed and waited for the train to stop. Waited to hear the creaky (嘎吱作响的) gate Dad’s going to fix when he came home. Waited to hear the sound of his work boots dropping on the step by the kitchen door, and his voice calling, “I’m home!”
Every night, as I lay there, I stared at the window and the curtains Mom made from empty flour sacks (麻布袋).
Every night, Mom came to kiss me good-night — after the train’s gone by. She had been listening, too. “Go to sleep. Your dad will be home soon. Maybe for Thanksgiving.”
Time dragging by, it finally came the day before Thanksgiving. I went to sleep with the sound of train wheels in my head, whispering, “Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow.”
Early the next morning, the smell of coffee woke me. I ran into the kitchen. There he was! Dad lifted me onto his shoulders and pretended to stagger from my weight. “How’s my boy? You’ve gotten so big that I can barely lift you up anymore.”
He put me down, and I stared at the two sacks on the table. One said FLOUR — I knew that word. I tried reading the other: S-U-G-A-R. Dad whistled admiringly and winked at me. Mom and I had been practicing my letters most days. I could see that Mom was pleased with me. “I’m going to bake a pie for your dad’s homecoming dinner. Jimmy, bring me that jar of apple jam from the shelf in the cellar.” Mom smiled at me.

For nearly twenty years, my life was about two things: smoking cigarettes—and trying to quit smoking cigarettes.
When I married Cassie ten years ago, I threw my pack of cigarettes and swore I was quitting.
When we bought our first house eight years ago, I celebrated it by pulverizing (粉碎) my pack of cigarettes with my shoe heel.
When my son, Cole, was born five years ago, I threw my cigarettes into a garbage can.
I even began working out—running days a week, rain or shine. I lost forty pounds but I never was able to outrun those cigarettes.
You know cigarettes are deadly—but every cell in your body screams out for that nicotine. Then, one day the willpower I had lacked arrived from most unexpected place: an unclouded corner of my son’s mind.
As Cassie was driving Cole home from kindergarten, they passed a cemetery (墓地), which made the boy ask: “Mom, what’s under tombstones?”
Realizing there was no delicate answer, she frankly said, “Dead people.”
“Is that where Dad’s going to be because he smokes?” Cole asked. “I hope not,” Cassie replied. “Dad shouldn't smoke,” Cole said, his voice rising in anger. He kicked the back of the front seat. “Dad’s stupid for smoking. When I'm twenty, he’ll be dead.”
Cassie was speechless, shocked by Cole’s innocence. Then, just as quickly as he had exploded, Cole calmed down. “I hope he comes back as a ghost and talks to me,” he said peacefully. “Like Obi-Wan Kenobi did to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars.”

Some of my earliest memories involve silting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from the office. I’d watch as he put his personal items away: his watch, wallet, comb and car keys would always occupy the same spot on the table every time. It was as if he could see invisible lines drawn specifically for these things, not a centimetre more or less.
Dad's comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say: “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?”
I was more than happy to do it. At age five this ordinary task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return die comb to Dad. He would smile at me, and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. Dad's business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to - just a couple of times a week. And when he did come home, it was always late and I'd already be in bed. I started to get mad. Why didn't he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Why take the risk and place the whole family in trouble? Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.
Today, I'm no longer a kid. Now 28, I ’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started to get back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me continued.

I woke up after surgery with my leg bandaged beyond recognition, with tubes coming out of various limbs(肢体),with my mouth dry and my mind confused.
The operation had required two bone transplants to fill the chunk(组块)I'd broken (it was in a million pieces, a doctor said). They'd inserted a titanium rod, a dozen or so screws. I wouldn't walk for three months, optimistically. I couldn't drive. I couldn't navigate the steps in our house. I couldn't even shower on my own.
I would be sent home to California with a machine designed to train my leg to regain its range of motion. I would sit in it for six hours a day, and when I wasn't sitting in the machine, I would be at physical therapy or limited to bed rest.
I was not thinking normally on my IV drip(静脉滴注) but my mind was clear enough and I turned to my husband Adam and asked,"How are we going to manage?" Who would get the kids to the bus at 7:15 a.m., since my husband was in his office by 6 am, each day? Who would deal with the dogs, who relied on my companionship and long walks? Who would prepare dinner?Who would drive to tennis practices and softball games and sleepovers?
"We'll figure it out," Adam said. I nodded, because what was the alternative? But nowhere in any of my Vicodin-infused cells did I believe him. Not even a tiny bit.
I posted about my accident on Face-book. An image of me with tubes up my nose, and a picture of my leg, wrapped and swollen.

"Missy," I cried to my wife, "did you put the banana skin on my desk?" "No, honey, Meghan probably did," As I'd feared, she had missed my real purpose of the question which was to make it clear to her that she hadn't done her job: defend my desk against the invader--our naughty girl.
I abandoned the conversation.
I sat here at the desk, and stared at the screen. I waited patiently for ideas to come to me, exam questions for a test I would give my English students. My wife was off to a reunion somewhere, but I was not alone. Meghan, our 22-month-old daughter, kept me company. Yet her plans that day seemed to go against mine.
She followed a daily routine that was both time-consuming and challenging. It included certain basic tasks: watching the fish, sweeping the carpet in her room, climbing up and down her bed.
At first I could concentrate on designing my test paper. But I was soon sidetracked(分心的). I had not counted on the arrival of the "bib-bibs" ("Bib-bibs" were birds). "Bib-bibs, bib-bibs!" Meghan screamed excitedly, her eyes alive with expectation. She insisted that I go with her to the window.
"In a second, just let me finish this question," I said. She pulled me by the hand (two fingers, actually) toward the window. I saw myself as a fool, being led to watch the bib-bibs. And we did watch them. They chattered and leaped back and forth on the lawn just outside our apartment window. Meghan was absorbed, but as I watched them, I still thought about my work.
Suddenly she rushed out from the room, and I heard her naked feet slapping against the wooden floor outside. She returned with her doll, Dumpty. She held him up to the window, stretching him out by his two arms and whispering into his nonexistent ear. "Bib-bibs, Dumpty, bib-bibs!" Then I left them in conversation and returned to my desk.

8.(2022·辽宁·高二期末) I was visiting my sister and watched as my fifteen-year-old nephew, Ben, emptied the trash without being asked. “You’re such a great kid,” I told him. “Thank you for doing that.” He smiled, “The trash is my job. I’m ATT around here.” At my confused look, my sister Mandy explained that ATT stood for All Things Trash. “Emptying the trash has always been Ben’s job, and sweeping the floor is Anna’s job. Whenever some of the trash would spill out onto the floor, they’d argue about whose responsibility it was to clean it up,” she said. “So, we came up with the word act to solve that problem. If it has anything to do with trash, no matter where it is, it’s Ben’s job.” I nodded. “That makes sense. I love easy ways to solve common problems.”
A few days later, I was back home with my own family. I had a deadline for a huge project at work, and I was really feeling the pressure. When I’d picked up my son from school that afternoon, I’d enter the grocery store to buy a toasted chicken for dinner. I figured that would buy me an extra hour to work on my project since I wouldn’t have to cook that night.
Now, it was 6:00 p.m., and I was typing away, making good progress. My kids were downstairs watching TV. My eleven-year-old son, Nathan, came into the room and said, “Mom, I’m getting hungry. Can you warm up the chicken now?”
“In a little bit,” I answered without looking up from the computer, “I’m trying to work.”
Ten minutes later, my older son, Jordan, came in to tell me that he was hungry too, and I needed to warm up the chicken. “I’ll do it as soon as I’m at a stopping point,” I said.
Fifteen minutes after that, my eighteen-year-old daughter, Julia, made the same request. I exploded. “Each of you is old enough to put a toasted chicken in the microwave,” I nearly shouted. “You are watching TV while I’m working on something important. I would think you would realize that I’m busy and just take some responsibilities.”

So eager was I that I often stood nearby, occasionally giving a helping hand under his instructions. Gradually, my doll house began to take shape.
Para2:
Four months later, a beautiful doll house was in front of me. With the shape like an upturned log, it looked exactly the same as the one in the toy store—little oval windows, white curtains and even the tiny balconies. 3.Possible version 1:
Hearing this, I took the steps two at a time to the cellar. The next second I was in front of the shelf. I stood on tiptoe and took down the jar carefully. I could hear Dad and Mom laughing upstairs and Mom’s hands slapping the dough. Wanting to join them, I hurried up the steps, and my foot caught on the middle one. I put out my hand to steady myself, but I tumbled down. The jar slipped through my fingers and smashed on the floor. The jam we’d been saving and saving flew everywhere. Wrong-footed, I burst into tears and heard Dad’s footsteps closer and closer.
“Never mind, boy, accidents happen,” Dad said and wiped my tears. These words seemed to have magic and gradually I settled down. Through the shirt, I could smell the dust of the train and the city as well as that of Dad’s. How I wished I hadn’t hurried. “Next time I will be more careful,” I thought to myself. Having swiftly dealt with the mess, Dad lifted me onto his shoulder and went back to Mom. “Now out of the kitchen, you two,” Mom said, “I'm going to bake my mama’s sugar pie, without apple jam!” I followed Dad out and helped him fix that old creaking gate until Ma called us in for Thanksgiving dinner.
Possible version 2:
Hearing this, I took the steps two at a time to the cellar. “No problem.” I jumped at the request and rushed downstairs. The jar just stood quietly on the shelf, but it seemed a bit high. I climbed up the chair nearby and extended my arms as long as possible. When I just grasped the jar, I lost my balance and fell down. I couldn’t help crying. What made me sad was not the pain but the jam — now scattered everywhere. There came Dad’s footsteps and Mom’s voice, “Are you hurt?” I shook my head slightly. She helped me up and asked me to go upstairs. With heavy footsteps, I moved slowly and tears welled up in my eyes.
“Never mind, boy, accidents happen,” Dad said and wiped my tears. “But I ruined your homecoming dinner.” Sorrow overwhelmed me and I kept sobbing. “No, my son,” Dad smiled gently, “My homecoming dinner is not about pies, but about you and Mom.” Hearing this, I stopped sobbing, “But what can we eat tonight?” “How about an apple pie without apple jam?” Mom came upstairs and cut in. Dad and I exchanged a glance and nodded. After a while, I found myself sitting in the chair, but this time, I sat in the middle between Dad and Mom.
(We can go without apple jam. Why not make a pie with apple jam?)
(…but this time, I sat with Dad on the left and Mom on the right.)
Possible version 3:
Hearing this, I took the steps two at a time to the cellar. “Yes! Madam.” I saluted, acting as if I were a solider. I ran downstairs as fast as my legs could carry me. After a while, I jumped upstairs with the jar in both hands, humming a joyful tune. But after I handed the jar to Mom, things went crazy. Mom was busy slapping the dough and asked me to pass her the sugar. Instead of scooping a bowl of it, I held the sack up. Just at that very moment, the sugar sack slipped away and all the sugar ended up on the mud floor. Realizing I spoiled Dad’s homecoming dinner, I burst into tears.
“Never mind, boy, accidents happen,” Dad said and wiped my tears. “I meant to help,” I whimpered, “but... I should have scooped some of it...” Dad squatted down and brushed the hair out of my eyes. “Next time it will just be fine.” I looked into Dad’s eyes and nodded. Dad lifted me onto his shoulder and turned to Mom, “Dear, can we make a sugar-free apple pie?” Mom, who had been watching us lovingly, replied “Of course!” and began to work on it. On that Thanksgiving evening, beside the wooden table sat three of us, I myself between Mom and Dad. Though sugar-free, the apple pie tasted sweeter than ever before.

And if he can only have you as a ghost, that's what he'll take. "The words were a simple truth. Smoking could only lead to one conclusion, and when they placed me under that tombstone, life would have to go on without me. If I couldn't even fool my own five-year-old kid, why was I continuing to try to fool myself?
Later that evening, I found Cole and said: “Cole, I’m going to quit smoking, but I you’re your help.” The seconds ticked by as he hatched his plan. Finally, he spoke. "Okay. Here’s what we'll do: every morning and every night, I'll tell you not to smoke.”Every time I had an urge to smoke, I fought it off with thoughts of tombstones and Obi-Wan Kenobi and a little boy trying desperately to help his old man out of a jam. So here I am, checking off the days that I've been cigarette-free. I know I have promise to keep and people to love.

5.Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I turned to leave, he said: “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb? It's been a while since I last cleaned.” It hit me then why, as a child, helping my dad clean his comb was such a joy. That routine meant that my dad was home early to spend the evening with Mum and I. It meant he would watch TV with us or play a few video games with me. It meant a happy and loving family.
When I passed the clean comb back to Dad, I noticed the wrinkles next to his eyes. They are more noticeable when he smiles, but his smile is still as heartwarming as before. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family. Dad carefully places his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, he still organizes his personal items in the same care fill way. I guess some things never change. And for that. I'm glad.

6.Friend's responses flooded in, asking for ways they could help. Jenna and James, a couple living nearby, offered to walk my dog and prepared dinner for my family every evening. Before I could blurt out a trembling thank you, they had already loaded the kitchen cupboard and fridge with pizzas, turkey, milk and fresh vegetables. Michael, a father from my son's class, proposed to pick up our two kids at 7:15. Most amazingly, Christy, an overloaded mother of three, asked my son and daughter to sleep over her house at weekends, joking the joining of Tom and Lisa would turn her house into a bigger amusement park.
Both my children and husband learned to be autonomous and considerate. Tom and Lisa, who usually slept in and were always dragged out of bed by my roaring or nagging, offered to prepare breakfast for the whole family. Leo, my husband, normally allergic to housework of all kinds, took up the chores in and outside our villa. Overwhelmed by my friends and families' generosity and kindness, I felt my mental pressure was taken off and tears of gratitude blurred my vision. I knew, deep in heart, that a quick recovery was right on the horizon.

7.Unfortunately, she soon came again, with her shoes in hands and preparing for an outing. “Don’t even ask, Meghan. Not today.”I knew her plan too well: First the shoes. Then the stroller. And pretty soon we were in the park. The way she always did. Having sensed my impatience with her, Meghan put down the shoes, tugged at my sleeve with her free hands and pleaded using her hard to understand baby talk. “No, Meghan,” I said again. “Not now. Go away and leave me alone.”Finally, she left. She made no further attempt to bother me. Then I tried to concentrate on the test paper.
Out of the corner of my eye I could see the little girl sobbing because I didn’t have time for her. She stood with her back against the sofa, watching me type and slowly brushing Dumpty’s arm for comfort. Obviously Dumpty was doing my job to keep her company. I suddenly felt guilty. “Meghan, I feel like taking a walk down to the park. I was wondering if you would like to join me.” Hearing this, she laughed excitedly and began the search for her shoes. I knew I should put aside my work and go right at the moment while my girl thought that a walk with her father was a gift beyond measure.

如:put down;go away;leave sb. alone; make no attempt to;concentrate on;would like to do;put aside;search for等固定短语。①Having sensed my impatience with her, Meghan put down the shoes, tugged at my sleeve with her free hands and pleaded using her hard to understand baby talk.中having sensed为现在分词的完成式作状语;I knew I should put aside my work and go right at the moment while my girl thought that a walk with her father was a gift beyond measure.中I should put aside my work and go right at the moment为省略了that的宾语从句,that a walk with her father was a gift beyond measure.为that引导的宾语从句。
8.Twenty minutes later, a paper plate filled with chicken and cheese appeared on the desk next to my computer. I smiled shyly at the kids. “Sorry I shouted at you guys. But I am so busy.” Of course, they forgave me kindly. I told them what I saw when I dropped in at my sister’s house and suggested that we do as Ben. They listened to me carefully and thoughtfully. After they knew what I thought, they gladly agreed to my suggestion and went out to discuss how they could assign different tasks.
Sharing the load has given me more time to read and rest. The kids also know what it means to take responsibility. Now in my family when the trash is full, Nathan will do it without being asked to. When I take food from stores, my daughter always try to help. My older son will help clean the house and make sure the house is tidy. I save myself from doing too much housework and the family can go out together on weekends. Taking care of my own needs makes me a better mom
