Smart phones are the main invention of modern technology, which are completely part of our daily lives. If we look at our society, we can see that all kinds of people are using smart phones. ___36___, I would like to suggest that all smart phones in the family should be put away for sixty to ninety minutes each evening.
Why? Lets take a ___37___ look at what the results of it might be if such a piece of advice was accepted. Families could use the time for a real family hour. Without phones, they might sit around together after dinner and ___38___ talk to one another. In fact, many of our problems are ___39___ by failure to communicate. By using the quiet family hour to discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better.
On evenings when such a talk is ___40___, families could discover other active pastimes. They might take a ride or a walk together to free from smart phones. With free time and no smart phones, children and adults might ___41___ reading. They might find there is more fun in a good book than in an electronic game. According to some educators, the generation growing up with smart phones can hardly write an English sentence, even at the college level. Actually, writing is often ___42___ through adequate reading. So with more time on books, a more literate (有文化的) new generation could be a product of the quiet hour.
A ___43___ form of reading might also be done as it was in the past: reading aloud. The quiet hour could become the story hour. We may find it hard to return from our newly-discovered activities and ___44___ the next story time.
How will we spend the time without smart phones? At first glance, it could be very difficult, or almost impossible. The fact is that it has been only ten years since smart phones came to ___45___ our time. Those of us at twenty-five or older can remember our childhood without smart phones. Gina’ Space 8:32 a.m. 11th February 2020
Upcycling Nowadays, we are more wasteful than ever. We need to start living more responsibly----but how? One answer is to upcycle. I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. I made a “new” hat for my brother. It used to be my dad’s sweater. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try.
Comments | Terry-B 9:08 a.m.11th February 2020 Why don’t you give your older clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don’t wear any more. I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need. |
Gina 9:28 a.m. 11th February 2020 Good point! I’m talking about the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil rich, we should give it to those in need.
Bety99 10:18 a.m.1lth February 2020 I’ve made dog toys out of socks. Upcycling clothing is a fun hobby. |

① Have you ever shown your photos on your favorite social media (媒体)? Or have you expressed your feelings and emotions on your online page? If yes, do you know what you have posted on the social medias can cause problems you could not expect?
② Cathy, who is going to be fifteen, posted online an invitation to her birthday party with her address in it. And guess what! 500 people came to the party, and some even broke the windows and plants, making a total mess of the house. The girl’s birthday party tuned into a nightmare (噩梦).
③ Many teenagers (青少年) think they know everything about social media, and that such a thing could never happen to them. Studies show that each year more than three million young people in the world get into trouble because of their online activities.
④ So do remember these if you really want to share something online.
⑤ Share with care! Not everyone will like what you write online. Think before you post anything. You never know who sees your texts, pictures or videos. Before clicking “post”, you should ask yourself, “How will I feel if my family or teachers see this?” and “How might this post be bad for me in five or ten years from now?”
⑥ Be polite when you write! Imagine someone is unfriendly in real life. The same is true of online communication. No one likes it when you “shout” in your messages. If you feel angry or frustrated while you’re writing a message, wait a bit. Read it again later and then send it.
⑦ Protect and respect! Never share your passwords with anyone. It’s not wise to post your home or email address online. Don’t say bad things about people. If you get messages like that or see them online, talk to your parents or your teachers.
⑧ I’d say none of these things promises 100% online safety, but each will help you to be safer.

From tiny seeds (种子), great discoveries grow. A mini-garden carried on China’s Chang’e 4 moon lander recently became home to the first plant to grow on another world.
This is yet another success for Chang’e 4. On January 2, the probe (探测器) became the first lander to touch down on the far side of the moon. This is the unknown face of the moon that is always looking away from us, so we never see it from down here on the earth. Although it is often regarded as the dark side of the moon, the far side actually gets as much sunshine as the near side. For example, when all we can see is a silver of a new moon, the far side of the moon is in full sunlight.
Part of Chang’e 4’s mission (使命) is to see how a moon base could be built for humans, including exploring (探索) whether humans could grow food and other plant products there. Change’4 carried a mini-garden with air, water and soil with seeds planted in it. When plants shoot on the earth, their stems grow away from the gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground) and so they always shoot upwards. The moon’s gravity is a sixth as strong as the earth’s, so Chang’e 4’s experiment was a test: would the earth plants know which way was up on the moon? Four days after landing, a tiny cotton shoot showed that they do.
Night has now fallen on the far side of the moon; sunlight will not return until the start of February. As a result, the cotton shoots died. Besides the darkness, the plants can’t stand the cold (it can drop to -170 ℃ on the moon at night). However, the experiment is a success, since it has proved that it is possible for plants to grow in space.
53. The passage is mainly about _____________.
A. another success for Change’4 B. Chang’e 4 moon lander
C. tiny seeds in the soil D. the steps of an experiment
54. Which of the following is TRUE about Chang’e 4?
A. It explored the moon base. B. It landed on the near side of the moon.
C. It found plants on the moon. D. It carried a mini-garden.
55. According to the passage we can know that _____________.
A. the far side of the moon gets less sunlight
B. the earth plants know the way to grow on the moon
C. we can see the far side of the moon from the earth
D. the stems fail to grow away from the earth’s gravity
56. What can be inferred (推理) from the passage?
A. Plants can be grown on the moon soon.
B. It is perfect to do experiments on the moon.
C. The cotton shoots can last days on the moon.
D. We can see a new moon at the start of February.

“I want you with me!” Silver shouted, “when we have the treasure, there’s gold for you too.” “No,” cried Tom, “I told you. I’m not a murderer. You’re guilty, all of you!” Sadly, these were the last words of Tom. It was a gunshot, Silver’s gun.
I moved away quickly and quietly. I ran fast not thinking about the direction I was taking. Suddenly, I saw a figure move quickly from tree to tree. What it was, whether a bear or a man or a monkey? Silver himself appeared less terrible to me now.

“Good boy,” he said, “I was on Flint’s ship when he buried (埋) the treasure, he and six strong seamen. But, when he returned, he himself alone, and the six all died. How he made it, not a man except him could make out. It was a battle, a murder, and a sudden death ---- him against six.”

The folk art form, kuaiban, which has a long history, can be performed by a group or a single person. With one or two pairs of bamboo clappers ---- a kind of traditional Chinese musical instrument in their hands, the performers tell stories in the local dialect (方言). These stories are usually folk tales or about social life.
Recently, Liu Jiming and Wan Yifu made and shared three short videos by using
kuaiban which were viewed about 4 million times. As a result, Liu and Wan have gained more than 1 million followers on the Internet. They’ve created many new works to raise people’s awareness. Some of their works are about the danger of drunken driving and food safety. They also write stories to show respect to people who make contributions, such as traffic policemen.
According to Liu and Wan, people can understand kuaiban pieces without difficulty. The stories told kuaiban pieces are close to people’s daily lives. Thus, they consider that it is a fun way to introduce the Chinese folk culture through kuaiban. And what matters to them is that both young people and old people begin to know the charm of the art form, kuaiban, which may not be paid much attention to, compared to other traditional art forms.
Folk art forms, like xiangsheng, pingshu and kuaiban, share something in common. These traditional art forms show the beauty and value of traditional Chinese culture so they should be known by more people and get to more areas. Luckily, through the Internet, new performers who go on sharing kuaiban pieces like Liu and Wan are playing an active role. Hopefully these Chinese folk art forms will be alive with the times.
