When I lit my candle and went up to my room that night, there sat Pap—his own self! I expected to be scared of him now, but I wasn’t. I stood looking at him; he set there—looking at me.

Pap was nearly fifty years old. His black hair was long and uncombed and dirty. He had allowed hair to grow on his face, which was ghostly white. Just looking at the ugly white skin made me feel sick. His clothes? —dirty and torn. His feet showed through large holes in his shoes. His hat was on the floor—an old black hat with a large hole in it.

Many Chinese consumers (消费者) didn’t think that they could learn English when going shopping online, but the popular livestreaming (直播) by New Oriental (新东方) made it come true.

Dong Yuhui, one of the teachers at New Oriental, became the latest star on Douyin. There were about 108,000 people in the online studio on Friday, with sales hitting 15.34 million yuan. Such a way of teaching English and selling things at the same time made young people show great interest in it. For example, when Dong sold rice, he also introduced the English word “rice”, and how to use “rice” in a phrase or a sentence. In this way, Dong sold more than 6,700 bags of rice in just a few minutes. They left messages in the comment section (评论区), saying it seemed to send them back to class at New Oriental.

Yu Minhong, the company’s leader, also showed in the studio, selling things with the teachers or hosts. So far, the studio has had about 2.5 million followers. On the evening of December 28, 2021, Yu just had the first livestreaming of agricultural products (农产品) on Douyin. And it set his studio “on fire” in less than a week. Yu talked about selling products in two languages, and he said this was a very important change for New Oriental. “They have changed from being teachers to being livestreaming hosts, who keep teaching English, because of consumers’ support,” Yu said.

 Ten years ago, my husband and I took a summer holiday in Corfu, Greece (希腊).

On our last night, we wanted to get away from other tourists. So we put our best clothes on and set off at 7:30. Then we walked out of the town.

30 minutes later, we arrived at a good-looking restaurant full of local people. So we entered it and found an empty table. The people on the next table had the most delicious looking food.  You often hear “New year, new me” in the UK on the first of January. It is very common to start a new year’s resolution on this day. This can be to give up something, like sweets or chocolate, so you can be healthier. People also like to start doing something new. There are so many things you can do! Many people I know decide to play sports and eat healthier food as their new year’s resolution. Many become heavier after the holidays as they often eat a lot.

I think new year’s resolutions are a great idea to give people motivation (动机) to do something good for themselves. When other people have the same resolution as yours, it helps you to stick to your own. For example, you could go jogging (慢跑) with a group of friends several times a week. That can be so much more fun and help you to keep the resolution.

Also, I think it is important for you to choose something realistic as a new year’s resolution. In the past, I have given up chocolate, stopped eating meat and started doing kung fu. Soon after that, I gave up some of these things, such as not eating chocolate. They were too difficult to keep. And some I kept on with and still do now.

This year, my resolution is to travel less by plane. Living in the UK, it was very difficult to travel without a car and not by plane, but now that I live in Germany I find it much easier to travel by another mode (模式) of transport. There are more environmentally friendly ways that I can choose like travelling by train or bus, though it’s more expensive, I know that I will do harm to the environment much less.

Have you ever tasted a kind of snack, which is also of the traditional Chinese of forms of art—sugar painting.

Sugar painting started from the Ming Dynasty and became popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, many people made a living through sugar painting, setting up stalls(货摊)in crowded streets, in front of theatres and busy public places. And now it can still be found in many areas of China.

The sugar painters usually sit before a wooden table. On the side, there is a wooden plate with a revolvable arrow(可旋转箭头)on it. The plate is painted with different pictures such as a dragon, a bird, a flower and so on. After paying, the customers turn the arrow and wait till it stops. The picture pointed by the arrow is the one the painters will make.

Sugar painting is very different from normal painting. The sugar painters use syrup(糖浆)as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth slab(台面)as the “paper”. To make the syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since the syrup may become solid(固体的)if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of the syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting of an animal, a flower or a bike is done.

The number of sugar painters is getting smaller. However, some of them still insist on this art. They make their efforts to hold different activities such as offering classes and giving speeches. Now, sugar painting has already been listed as National Non-Material Culture Heritage.
