It’s usual to hear of Chinese parents hiring a tutor(家教)if their children are doing poorly on tests. Did you know that teenagers can be tutors themselves? Amir Davis,16, from New York, US, is a tutor. Together with six other teens runs a special tutoring pro-gram for other kids in his community. The program mainly helps middle schoolers who have difficulties in their classes or who are preparing for a test called the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). It is an admissions test(入学考试)for eight STEM-Orien-ted(注重STEM教育的)public high schools in New York.
As an African-American student at one of these schools, Davis was sad to realize that black and Latino(拉丁裔的)students had low admission rates(录取率)every year. These groups hold only 10.4 percent of the students admitted these schools.
One of the reasons for the low admission rate is that a number of black and Latino students don’t take the SHSAT, with many families not realizing that they can take the test. So Davis tries to help kids in his area prepare for the test while also helping them with other schoolwork.
Davis and his team recently turned a building that his father bought into a tutoring center. During their tutoring, they first address what the students are doing in their classrooms. If they are having trouble with any specific topic, Davis or other tutors will walk them through it. With this help, the students can try to improve their knowledge of difficult sub-jects and do better in the classroom.

Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) once made history by taking bites of red romaine lettuce (长叶莴苣). They became the first humans to eat food that was grown in space. The lettuce was planted on the ISS in a small greenhouse called “Veggie”, which uses LED lights to help plants grow in space.
First, the astronauts cleaned the lettuce with special sanitizing wipes (消毒纸巾) and then ate it with some salad dressing.
“It was one small bite for man, one great step for ... our journey to Mars,” one astronaut, Scott Kelly, later, posted on social media.
Space vegetables are a part of the NASA, experiment called “Veg-01”, a study on how plants grow without the effects of Earth’s gravity (重力). It will allow astronauts to grow and eat their own food during long space explorations.
“If we’re ever going to go to Mars someday, we’re going to need a spacecraft that is much more self-sustainable (自给自足的) in its food supply.” said Kelly.
“Growing fresh plants on a spacecraft may also provide oxygen and help keep astronauts alive.” NASA said.
Veg-01 started in May 2014. The first part of vegetables, took 33 days to grow in space before they were taken back to Earth for a safety check. After making sure they were safe to eat, astronauts planted a second part on July 8. They let the plant grow for another 33 days and were then able to eat it. Astronauts usually only get vegetables when a supply ship comes to the ISS. Now with vegetables grown in space, they can eat them whenever they want.
8.Astronauts made history by ________.

C.cooking real food in space D.building a small greenhouse

A.Because it provides people with healthier food.
B.Because it provides astronauts with enough oxygen.
C.Because it reduces the cost of sending food to the ISS.

How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel better when you visit your local park? I believe the answer must be “YES”.
Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada’s national parks is getting smaller every year. And in countries such as the USA, only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel thatthisis a problem in the twenty —first century.
Therefore, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health: one example is the work of Dr. Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a math test. During the test, their heart rates (心率) were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-virtual-reality (虚拟现实) room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than people’s in the other group. The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. The natural world allows our brains to rest and slow down, and can leave us feeling happier and less stressed. Another example from Canada also shows nature is good for health. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.
Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want people to enjoy nature in their everyday life. In Dubai, people plan to build a new shopping mall with a large garden, so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. And South Korea has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. Getting close to nature has been thought to be necessary for brain development in children. In Switzerland, “forest schools” are popular. School children study their subjects in the forests and exercise a lot outside. So after building cities for so long, perhaps it’s now time to start rebuilding nature.
In a word, nature holds a special kind of energy: it is clean, wild and spirit —renewing, which makes us grow stronger. ________

A stalk of celery (一根芹菜) got Jaye Gardiner into science.
As a first-grader in school, Gardiner was invited to make an experiment in a second-grade science class. Gardiner, who’d always been interested in science, was “super-excited”.
The experiment was simple. The students put stalks of celery into cups of coloured water and then watched what would happen. Over time, as the stalks “drank” the water, their leaves changed colour to match the water. It was like magic to Gardiner. “What is this? How does this work?” the girl wondered. “I want to solve puzzles like that!” From then on, Gardiner dreamed of becoming a scientist.
Gardiner is now 31 and works at a cancer centre in the US. She is not only a scientist, but also a science communicator. She wants more people to discover the wonders of science at a young age. In 2015, Gardiner and her scientist friends set up JKX Comics — a website that uses comics to explain biological science. Most of JKX Comics readers are teenagers. Topics have been from cell division (细胞分裂) to Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症). The text is simple and the drawings are colourful and full of fun.
Gardiner believes science comics are not just kid stuff. “They let more people fall in love with science. They also help everyone pay more attention to their health,” she said.
“That’s terribly important.”
Now the comics are available free on the JKX Comics website, but Gardiner and her friends are planning to put them into print and make them available to schools and libraries.
