The Best Books of 2020
On Monday, the American Library Association announced the top children’s books of 2020. Here are the winners.
Devotion
Author Clare Vanderpool took home the John Newbery Medal for outstanding contribution to children’s literature for Moon over Manifest. The book is about a young girl’s magical adventures in a small Kansas town, in 1936.
Vanderpool said that she was shocked to learn that she had won. “You grow up reading legendary authors like Madeleine L’Engle, but I never expected to be put in a category with her,” Vanderpool told TFK. “It’s fabulous.”

The picture book A Sick Day for Amos McGee won the Randolph Caldecott Medal. The book was illustrated by Erin E. Stead and written by her husband, Philip C. Stead. It tells the story of an elderly zookeeper and the animals that visit him when he’s not well enough to go to work.
“I love drawing animals and I love drawing people and I love drawing the emotional connection between animals and people,” said Stead.

Set in 1968, the novel follows three sisters from Brooklyn, New York, who visit their mother, a poet who ran away years ago and lives in California.
The king prize for best-illustrated work went to Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave. The first time I heard about my classmates engaging with social media was in the fourth grade. A few of my friends and some of my classmates had excitedly jumped onto platforms like Instagram at such a young age. On the other hand, I hesitated. I only knew the basics, but was foreign to some words on social media.
All throughout middle school, I stuck with the same thinking. And now, as a freshman in college, I am looking back and wondering why I have never been naturally interested in social media.
Scanning Instagram, you ought to find dozens of pictures of people in beautiful countries, taking part in exciting activities, and spending time with friends and family, among many other things. The thought of doing this never resonated with me. I respect and understand those who do believe using social media allows them to express themselves and share aspects of their lives with others. However, I have never had any interest in doing the same. In my eyes, family gatherings and friend get-togethers are just as, if not more meaningful when not shared with others.
Most people have experienced feeling insecure and unconfident on social media. Images that are changed represent unrealistic beauty standards that can only be obtained through dangerous ways. Even without using social media, I knew that using apps like Instagram and Facebook would make me embarrassed of all the aspects that make me a unique individual. I never wanted to look at a post on social media and immediately compare myself and my life.
I constantly observe my classmates getting easily distracted (使分心)by social media. While trying to complete their homework, they have a powerful urge to open up Instagram or Facebook to see if there are any new messages. With homework and after-class activities consuming the majority of my day, I cannot wait to finish every task on my to-do list, so I can finally spend time with my family or have some time for myself to relax from my busy day.
24. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. Social media are popular with students.
B. Young pupils suffer from social media.
C. The author has no access to social media.
D. Social media contribute to students’ study.
25. From paragraph 3, we can know that ____________________.
A. In no circumstances will you find scores of pictures of people taking part in exciting activities.
B. As far as the author concerned, family gatherings are not meaningful when not shared with others.
C. It never appealed to the author to share pictures of his or her spending time with friends and family on social media.
D. Most people dismissed the act of sharing pictures on social media.
26. Why do people using social media might feel insecure?
A. They follow other people's beauty standards totally.
B. Social media change the way they look at themselves.
C. Social media encourage them to be a unique individual.
D. They spend more time posting their images on social media.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? wiup :uId: wiup
A. A to-do list can stop people using social media.
B. Social media can waste people's valuable time.
C. Spending time with family always enjoys first priority.
D. Students pay more attention to social media than to study.
C
Doctors sometimes prescribe light therapy to treat a form of depression in people who get too little morning sun. But too much light at other times may actually cause such mood disorders. Long-lasting exposure to light at night brings depression, a new study finds, at least in animals. The new data confirm observations from studies of people who work night shifts, says Richard Stevens of the University of Connecticut Health Center. Mood disorders join a growing list of problems, including cancer, obesity and diabetes — that can occur when light throws life out of balance by disturbing the biological clock and its timing of daily rhythms.
In the new study, Tracy Bedrosian and Randy Nelson of Ohio State University exposed mice to normal light and dark cycles for four weeks. For the next four weeks, half of the mice remained on this schedule, and the rest received continuous dim light throughout their night. Compared with mice exposed to normal nighttime darkness, those getting dim light at night lost their strong preference for sweet drinks, "A sign they no longer get pleasure out of activities they once enjoyed." Bedrosian says.
In a second test, mice were clocked on how long they actively tried to escape a pool of water. Those exposed to night lights stopped struggling and just floated in the water, a sign of "behavioral despair", 10 times as long as the mice that had experienced normal nighttime darkness. All symptoms of depression disappeared within two weeks of the mice returning to a normal light-dark cycle, the researchers report. The scientists also could quash the behavioral symptoms by injecting the brains of animals with a drug that prohibits the activity of certain molecules linked with human depression. This finding further suggests that light at night may cause something related to depression.
Human studies linking nighttime light and mood disorders are important but can't easily detect molecular underpinings (分子基础) as animal studies can, says George Brainard of Thomas Jefferson University. The new work, he says, suggests that the change of the biological clock by light at night can be "an extremely powerful force in regulating biology and behavior."
28. After being exposed to continuous nighttime light, the mice ____.
A. changed their preferences B. escaped from the water more eagerly
C. remained active as before D. showed less interest in their favorites
29. What does the underlined word "quash" in Para.4 probably mean?
A. study B. predict C. ease D. cause
30. We can learn from the last paragraph that _____.
A. light at night may have practical effects on people
B. the biological clock is beneficial to humans
C. human mood disorders cannot be healed easily
D. human studies are more important than animal studies
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Nighttime light may foster depression.
B. A drug has been found to cure mood disorders.
C. The study on animals can be applied to humans.
D. Human biological clock can be controlled by light.
D
In a conversation with an acquaintance, your brain might skip ahead, anticipating the words that the other person will say. Perhaps then you will cry out whatever comes to mind. Or maybe you will nurse your guess quietly, waiting to see if — out of all the hundreds of thousands of possibilities — your conversational partner will arrive at the same word you have been thinking of. Amazingly, your companion will often do so.
How does the brain do this? Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers brought a new take to the question using a technique called integrative modeling. They compared dozens of machine-learning algorithms called neural networks to brain scans and other data. The researchers had a two-part goal: they wanted to figure out how the brain processes language and in doing so expand on what machine-learning algorithms can teach us about the brain.
The modeling technique shows that a key role may be played by next-word prediction, which is central to algorithms such as those that suggest words as you write your texts and e-mails. The researchers discovered that models that expert at next-word prediction are also best at anticipating brain activity patterns and reading times. So it seems like these models are not just useful for presenting the word “want” after you have typed “do you” — or for allowing computers to complete any number of tasks from behind the scenes. They may all offer a window into how your brain makes sense of the flood of words coming out of your friend’s mouth.
The researchers claim that this study marks the first time that a machine-learning algorithm has been matched to brain data to explain the workings of a high-level cognitive task. The finding suggests that predictive processing is central to how we understand language and proves how artificial neural networks can offer key insights into cognition.
“I did not think this would happen in my lifetime.” says Evelina Fedorenko, a cognitive neuroscientist at M. I. T. “These models are much better than I would have predicted, relative to human neural data. That just opens up all sorts of doors.”
32.What will happen in a conversation with your friend according to paragraph 1?
A.Your mind will be blank. B.Your friend will be silent.
C.You will have much to say. D.You will get what you predict.
33.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
A.The foundation of modeling. B.The heart of algorithms.
C.The process of modeling. D.The methods of algorithms.
34.Which is the best title for the text?
A.The Brain Guesses What Words Come Next
B.Integrative Modelings Affect How Conversations Go

Four Qualities That Make You Attractive to Others
There is something many people gets wrong about attraction. 36 The reality is that attraction usually has more to do with personality characteristics than appearance. What follows are four qualities that can make you highly attractive to others.

续写
Charlie was a 9-year-old boy who had to endure the news of a devastating house fire that left his mom Annie in a coma(昏迷). The young boy was in school, and his father was at work, leaving his mom alone at home when it happened.
Although Annie did not suffer major burns, she had breathed in too much dirty air, which led to the coma. Charlie was sorry to lose their home in the fire, but what scared him most was losing his mom.
“I want to be with Mom all the time, Dad. I need to take care of her and make sure that she wakes up!”he told his dad, Chris.
“I know that, Charlie, but you need to go to school,” Chris replied. “I’ll have the school bus send you to the hospital after school every day so you can be with your mom, alright? I’m sure she can feel your presence.”
Chris was sad to lose their home, too. He feared that he would lose his wife and somehow blamed himself for not being there when she needed him most. But despite all his feelings, he hid them from Charlie because he had to remain strong. If Charlie knew his real feelings the little boy would be more afraid.
“It will be your mom’s birthday soon. Why don’t we make her a card? I’m sure she’ll appreciate it when she wakes up,” Chris suggested, watching Charlie hold his mom’s hand.
Charlie nodded and suddenly remembered the gift he had kept for his mom “Can you take me back to our old house, Dad? I left a gift there for Mom a short time ago. I’d like to see if it’s still there,” he asked.
Chris could feel his heart ache because he knew Charlie wouldn’t find the gift. However, despite this, he said yes, and the two visited their old house before returning to the apartment they were renting.
Paragraph 1:
Charlie did not know where to start looking for the gift.

Paragraph 2:
A couple of days later, Charlie and Chris celebrated Annie's birthday at the hospital. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 1:
Charlie did not know where to start looking for the gift. There was barely anything recognizable in the house until he noticed a piece of his colorful bedroom lamp. He had kept the gift under it, so he started to dig through the ruins. After a while, Chris was surprised to see Charlie holding a small box. “I found it, Dad!” he yelled. After opening the box, Chris saw a necklace and a photo of Charlie and Annie with the words “Thank you, Mom. I love you!”
Paragraph 2:
A couple of days later, Charlie and Chris celebrated Annie’s birthday at the hospital. Charlie gently placed the necklace around his mom’s neck. “I hope you wake up soon, so you can see my gift,” he whispered. Annie seemed to have heard Charlie’s request, and her eyes started to open. “You know what, son?” she began to tell Charlie. “When I was in a coma, I couldn’t feel anything. However, I knew your arms were around my neck.’ Charlie felt the power of love and embraced his mom tightly.

W: Do you have a favorite type of film? I can’t decide between comedy and drama.
M: I like the stories where they have to solve a mystery and catch a bad guy.
(Text 2)
W: If it’s raining, I’ll wear my blue jacket. But if it’s windy, I’ll wear the black one.
M: But it’s warm today.
W: Oh. My red jacket is best for that kind of weather.
(Text 3)
W: There is something very rare in our forest —— a tree that is much higher than the other plants.
M: I know. It grows up to about 50 meters and the tree’s branches are used to make boats and furniture.
(Text 4)
W: What happened to that gift card? I was going to use it to buy some lipstick and clothes.
M: I used it to buy earrings for your mother last week. Its due date was yesterday, so I had to use it before it was useless.
(Text 5)
W: You aren’t going to make it. The meeting begins at 8:30, and it’s almost 7:45. What time did you get up?
M: An hour ago. I’ve been chatting with my colleagues all this time. We decided to have the meeting online instead.
(Text 6)
W: You have been to lots of countries, haven’t you? What language do they speak in Scotland?
M: The Scots have their own language. They also speak English, but with a different accent from their neighbors. The Irish also speak English, although they have their own language too.
W: What language do you speak? Can you speak any other languages?
M: Well, I am originally from Scotland, but I know a bit of German from when I worked in Germany.
W: What did you do there?
M: I helped them design and build cars. The Germans are very proud of their car industry. Lots of different makes are designed there.
W: Did you get to drive them?
M: Oh, yes. We used to drive them through Switzerland to a testing factory in Italy.
(Text 7)
W: My phone died again. I need to charge it before we go anywhere.
M: You are never ready, Tina! I am always waiting for you. Every time we’ve got together, you would be over 30 minutes late!
W: There’s always a good reason, Patrick…
M: Uh, not always! Each time, it’s a different excuse. First, it was your car...then you lost something… another time it was because you couldn’t find the right shoes…and now your phone needs to be charged? Come on!
W: Well, I bought the tickets of the concert through an app, and we have to show them on my phone to get in.
M: OK, look…if we don’t get there soon, we could miss the whole thing. I’ll drive us there and pay for parking, and you can charge your phone in my car.
(Text 8)
W: What are you doing, David?
M: I’m making pepper.
W: I didn’t know you could make pepper.
M: These are just different tastes that I add to regular black pepper. Look. This one on the shelf is made with hot red peppers. This one on the table is called sweet-and-sour pepper, and the one I’m making now is called green tea pepper.
W: Green tea pepper?
M: Yeah. First, I cut up some green tea leaves into very small pieces. Then I mix that with regular black pepper and leave it in the fridge for a month. After that, it tastes amazing!
W: What do you do with it?
M: I usually use it for meat and fish. But if you put a little on your eggs in the morning, it’s the best thing ever!
W: It sounds like a nice hobby, if you have the time. I think the regular pepper is just fine.
(Text 9)
M: I’m standing here in the small village of Point Pleasant. As you can see, the water level is at five feet, and it’s rushing through the streets like a river. Excuse me, Madam? What is your name?
W: Kelly Thompson.
M: Can you tell us what happened to you?
W: The storm hit us two days ago. I put boards on the windows and stayed inside, but the rain wouldn’t stop. When the water started coming in the house, I knew I had to get out.
M: So, what did you do?
W: I tried to drive my car, but it had floated away. My only choice was to swim to the nearest tall building. Once I got there, I ran up the stairs to the roof.
M: So how were you rescued?
W: By helicopter. They dropped us here at this school and have given us blankets and food.
M: What an amazing story! Do you have any advice for people living in areas where the storm will hit next?
W: Yes. Get out now. Do not try staying at home. It’s too dangerous.
M: Thank you, Kelly. If anyone would like to volunteer for rescue efforts or donate money, please call the number at the bottom of your screen.

There is no doubt that Australia is one of the world’s greatest treasures, yet most of us would probably rather travel to North America, Europe, or Asia. Perhaps the main reason why people don’t visit Australia is because they are scared of its many deadly animals. After all, Australia is home to sharks and some of the world’s most poisonous spiders and snakes. Say what you will, but you can’t say Australia is boring! So today, why don’t we take a look at some of the country’s more positive aspects? Australia is a multicultural country full of kind and helpful people. They love to laugh and are very welcoming to visitors. Australia also has a very warm climate. In fact, the entire middle of the country is a desert. So all the big cities are spread around the coastal areas where it is cooler. Surfing is a hugely popular activity there. Most Australian children start the popular water sport once they can walk, and long before they learn how to ride a bike. This “beach life” is a big part of the Australian lifestyle, which explains why Australians always seem so relaxed and carefree. It’s true that Australia is mostly flat and lacks the mountains and green grasslands compared with nearby New Zealand. However, what more than makes up for it is its unique animals, friendly people, and beautiful beaches.
