If you want to do your kids a favor, consider having them walk to school. Walking to school provides many benefits – improving academic performance, reducing anxiety, boosting spirits, better sleep, a sense of independence, having an opportunity to familiarize oneself with a neighborhood, to notice small details, to feel a sense of wonder at the surroundings. The list goes on.
Parental fears still exist, however. Parents are terrified of cars, of injury, of harsh weather, of encounters with strangers and wild animals. These fears prevent parents from letting their kids do something that’s actually enormously beneficial to them, despite the fact that removing an opportunity to be active contributes to an increase in childhood obesity, which can have a greater negative impact on a child’s life than the risk of being injured due to being active.
How do we go from being a society that does not encourage its children to walk independently to being one that does? Parents must face their own discomfort with letting go. Brussoni, an expert who researches children’s outdoor and risky play, said “We want to move parents from focusing solely (仅仅, 只) on protecting their child to building trust in their child’s abilities and strategies to support their child’s skills in navigating the streetscape.”
Schools can play a role by encouraging children to walk to school. Brussoni offers additional suggestions: “They should promote a culture that walking to school is the norm, help educate parents on why this is important, and consider closing the streets around the school to cars before and after school.”
Parents might do well to put themselves in their children’s shoes. As adults, we know how good a morning walk feels to start off a day or to end one. Walking energizes us and cheers us up, and it can do the same for children. As we go through this pandemic that has shaken up all of our lives, it’s a good time to practice new routines and establish new habits. Walking to school is a great place to start.
24. What can we infer about kids’ usual way of going to school?
A. They are driven to school. B.They walk to school alone.
C. They ride bikes to school D. They are led to school by teachers.
25. What does Brussoni suggest parents do in paragraph 3?
A. Focus on their child’s safety. B. Protect their child against injury.
C. Believe their child’s abilities. D. Strike traffic rules into their child’s heart.
26. What does the underlined word “They” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Children B. Societies. C. Schools. D. Governments.
27. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To illustrate the roles of parents and schools. B. To encourage kids to form a good habit.
C. To promote a way of establishing a new routine. D. To advise parents to have kids walk to school.

When Kirk Alexander went missing for 11 days, an unlikely savior came to his rescue: his neighborhood pizza store.
Almost every night for more than ten years, Kirk Alexander, 48, of Salem, Oregon ordered a late dinner from his local Domino’s pizza store. He had no signature order. Sometimes he would call for a salad, sometimes a pie, sometimes chicken wings. The only sure thing for the staff of the Silverton Road Domino’s was that they would see Alexander’s name show up on their online ordering site sometime between 11 p. m. and midnight several times a week.
Until suddenly, for nearly two weeks at the end of April 2016, they didn’t.
It was a slow Saturday night on May 7th when Domino’s general manager Sarah Fuller felt she could no longer ignore Alexander’s recent absence.
“I went and looked up to see how long it had been since he last ordered,” Fuller told KATU. com. “It was 11 days, which was not like him at all.”
Fuller knew Alexander worked from home, and neighbors said he rarely left. She also knew that he had suffered some health issues in the past. Something, Fuller worried, was wrong.
Around 1 a. m. on Sunday, May 8, Fuller sent longtime delivery driver Tracey Hamblen to stop in at Alexander’s home. Hamblen approached Alexander’s door as he had countless times before and knocked. He could plainly see that Alexander’s TV set was on, as were his lights; but after several minutes, Alexander still didn’t answer the door.
Hamblen rushed back to the store to relay the upsetting developments to Fuller. She encouraged Hamblen to dial 911. Soon, officers were on their way.
When deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s office arrived at Alexander’s house, they heard a man “calling for help from inside the residence, deputies said. They broke the door down, and found Alexander on the floor in need of immediate medical attention. One day later, and they might have been too late.
Alexander was rushed to Salem Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition shortly after the dramatic rescue. In the following weeks, Fuller, Hamblen, and other store employees went to visit him with flowers and cards, noting that Alexander greeted them with knowing smiles.
28. How did Fuller sense that something was wrong?
A. She knew Alexander had serious health problems.
B. Alexander hadn’t ordered chicken wings for nearly 2 weeks.
C. Alexander had never before broken his routine in the store for 10 years.
D. Alexander had disappeared from the store’s ordering system for about 2 weeks.
29. What can you infer from the underlined sentence?
A. Hamblen was more than an acquaintance to Alexander.
B. Hamblen was fond of knocking at Alexander’s door.
C. Every time Hamblen arrived at Alexander’s house, he would knock first.
D. When Hamblen had enough time in the past, he would go to Alexander's house.

Plants: we eat them, juice them, and now it seems we can mine them too!
After a successful experiment on the island of Borneo, the botany professor Alan Baker and a group of researchers want to introduce phytomining (harvesting minerals from plants) as a better, partial substitute for traditional mining.
Phytomining, also known as agromining, means collecting metals from live plants. However, this can only be done with a group of plants known as “hyperaccumulators”. There are around 700 identified types worldwide, and what makes these hyperaccumulators special is that they naturally attract and absorb minerals through their roots-metals poisonous to other plants-and then store huge, pure concentrations of these minerals in their bodies. The metals can then be extracted (提取) from the plants’ sap (汁;液), oil, or sometimes even live tissue.
Baker and his colleagues see a lot of potential in phytomining. Not only can it help meet the growing global demand for metals, but is a way of undoing some of that damage to the environment by traditional mining.
One of the biggest problems with traditional mining is that it pollutes the surrounding area. Phytomining can extract metal waste, plus planting the hyperaccumulators would regrow the deforested areas caused by mining operations. Apart from this, if phytomining is able to replace part of traditional mining, then there would be fewer examples of bad mining practices like abandoned mines, which pollute the nearby waters. Also, since phytomining provides metals that are already naturally pure, there is no need to use huge amounts of energy to purify the ore (矿石).
Phytomining has its drawbacks. Harvesting plants on a large scale is expensive today, compared to traditional mining. Besides, plants can be wiped out by diseases or unexpected weather conditions.
However, there are many reasons to consider phytomining. After all, we need to make sure that our planet can keep up and sustainable practices like phytomining give us the hope that our advancement doesn’t mean sacrificing Mother Earth.
32. What makes hyperaccumulators different from other plants?
A. The sap poisonous to other plants. B. The ability to take in and store minerals.
C. The oil extracted from live plant tissue. D. The concentrations of minerals in their bodies.
33. What is the advantage of phytomining?
A. It may reduce the deserted mines. B. It can stop deforestation.
C. It uses clean energy to purify the ore. D. It can’t be destroyed by diseases.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward phytomining?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Pessimistic. D. Skeptical.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Future of Phytomining. B. Metals From Plants.
C. What Are Hyperaccumulators? D. Benefits of Phytomining.

Endangered species
An endangered species is a group of animals that could soon become extinct. ____36____ Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face of the earth very soon if we don’t do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered.
Habitat destruction is the main reason why animals become endangered and this happens in two ways. When humans move into a new area, the animals’ habitat is destroyed and there is nowhere for them to live and nothing to eat because humans chop down trees and build houses and farms. ____37____ Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms cause the destruction of animals’ homes and food supplies.
____38____ Animals have been brought to the edge of extinction because they are killed for their highly-valued meat, fur, bones or skin, or just for sport. Overfishing has resulted in many large sea creatures like whales and sharks becoming endangered species.
____39____ We should take care not to pollute natural areas, and farmers or companies who destroy animal habitats should face severe financial penalties. The public can help out by refusing to buy any products made from these animals’ body parts. Governments can help, too, by making it against the law to hunt, fish or trade in endangered species. They can also provide funding for animal sanctuaries, to protect animals from extinction by breeding more endangered animals, which they later release into the wild. ____40____
A. Eventually, all the creatures on Earth will enjoy being together.
B. Endangered species are also the result of hunting and fishing.
C. Animal habitats are also destroyed because of pollution.
D. Recent changes, however, have helped to improve the situation.
E. If we all cooperate and take these steps, we will protect these animals for future generations.
F. So what can individuals and governments do to protect endangered species?
G. Extinction happens when the last of the species has died out and there will be no more.

Loving Parcels for Students in Need
In order to help the students in the poverty-stricken areas, a “Loving Parcels” donation activity was successfully held in our school hall last week.
All of the teachers and students took an active part in the activity. They donated their clothes, books and schoolbags to the students in need. In addition, they also wrote down the best wishes on cards, which would be collected and delivered to the schools in the poor areas.
Not only did the activity help us express our care for the students and send our sincere wishes to them but it also taught us that we should value what we have.
