A tiny forest is a small area of closely planted, fast growing local trees. It is created to copy a natural forest, bringing all its benefits, but for a small space in cities. The first tiny forest was planted by a Japanese plant expert. Dr. AkiraMiyawaki in the 1970s. It was so great that it grew quickly in countries such as Denmark. Britain. Germany, Ireland and Spain.
As the name suggests, the place doesn’t have to be big. An area the size of about 200 m2 is perfect. 600 trees, with as many as 40 different kinds, can be planted in the place. With 2 to 7 trees every square metre, the trees are planted much more closely than the ones in normal forests. But there’s still room for the trees to grow naturally without the use of fertilisers*.
To plant a tiny forest, one starts with testing the soil and choosing right kinds of trees. In cities, the soil is often in poor condition. It is important to create loose and rich soil. When the soil is prepared, the community will invite school children on a planting day. The forests need 2 to 3 years of care from children. Then the trees can become self-growing. It’s believed if children plant their own forest and spend a lot of time caring for it, they will grow up to be healthy adults with a sense of responsibility for the society.
Trees and forests aren’t special pieces of nature that should only exist in the countryside. They need to be a part of life in cities too.
19. The idea of a tiny forest came from a scientist in ______.
A. Britain B. Japan C. Germany D. Spain
20. What’s special about a tiny forest?
A. There arc usually about 7 kinds of trees.
B. It usually covers an area of about 600 m2.
C. It grows quickly with the help of fertilisers.
D. Trees arc planted closely in small places in cities.
21. Planting tiny forests can ______.
A. help children grow into responsible adults
B. tell children the way to test the soil condition
C. teach children knowledge about the community
D. let children experience the life in the countryside
22. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Save the World with a Tiny Forest B. Tiny Forest: Great Hope far Children
C. Learn to Grow Your Own Tiny Forest D. Tiny Forest: Super Tiny, Super Powerful

It’s well-known that sunshine influences people’s health. And new research shows it may also make people eat more—but only if they’re male*.
The finding is from Carmit Levy, a researcher who had been studying how sunlight affects the risk of skin diseases. She exposed* a group of mice to sunlight for a few weeks, and unexpectedly found that sunlight made male mice get heavier, but not females*. The males also worked harder to get food that was difficult to reach.
That interested her, so Levy and her team did further studies. They invited volunteers for two tests. Both showed that men and women were affected differently by sunlight. Then, they got data from almost 3, 000 people. These data told that 1, 330 men required about 2, 188 daily calories* in summer months and only needed 1, 875 calories in other months. The 1. 661 women needed about 1, 500 calories each day all year long.
Encouraged by this, the team ran more mouse experiments to test what might explain such findings. And the reason may be connected with these three things. The first is p53. Its levels will rise when the body is under stress. For animals that are usually active at night, such as mice, sunlight can be a cause of stress. The second key player is ghrelin. When the stomach is empty, it travels to the brain to send the message that the body needs food. The last is estrogen*. Its levels arc much higher in females than males.
Here’s what may happen in male mice exposed to sunlight. First, the stress of sunlight makes p53 in the skin start to work. This p53 then tells the skin to create ghrelin. Therefore, the mice eat more. But in female mice, the estrogen seems to interfere the production of ghrelin. As a result, the female mice may not feel so hungry. That’s to say, estrogen provides females with a greater protection against various forms of stress.
The idea that sunlight may affect the need for food is interesting. But being sure the key players and how they work with each other will require much more research.
23. After exposing the male mice to sunlight for weeks. Levy found they ______.
A. gained some weight B. got food more easily
C. ate in a healthy way D. suffered from skin diseases
24. Levy’s team did further studies on humans to ______.
A. encourage more people to form new eating habits
B. compare the eating habit of people with that of the mice
C. see how many calories men and women need through a year
D. check if people are affected by sunlight in the same way as mice
25. What docs the underlined word“interfere” probably mean?
A. Waste. B. Reduce. C. Develop. D. Complete.
26. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The p53 in the skin of mice will rise when night falls.
B. The ghrelin could make mice’s stomachs empty more quickly.
C. The scientists have been able to control people’s need for food.
D. The estrogen may protect female mice from the stress of sunlight.

I had always wanted to be a bicyclist. It changed when I met Lizzie and her horse at twelve.
One afternoon, I saw Lizzie looking up at a life-sized sculpture horse.
“It needs a rider, ” she turned to me. “Would you be the rider, Bonny?”
“I can’t. ”
“You can ride bikes. It’s not that different. You’d just sit there. I’d sketch* you, sculpt* you. ” Later, I tried to sit on the horse. It felt strange up there—much higher than on bikes.
I came every day after that. I looked forward to mixing up the plaster* and holding it for Lizzie. I liked that. She was sculpting me up, little by little.
After a few days, work, I became the rider on the horse. It was me inside that skeleton.
When it was finished, I could hardly take my eyes off the magnificent horse and rider.
“Well, ” said Lizzie. “What do you think. Bonny?”
“I just wish I could make a sculpture, ” I whispered, touching the neck of the horse.
“You did, Bonny, ” she said. “Without your help, I couldn’t have done it. Do you want to make a sculpture yourself?”
“I can’t. ”
“Of course you can. But you have to look around, really look. Draw what you see. Make what you’ve sketched. You can have a comer of my studio. How’s that?”
I followed her words and set to make my small sculpture, layer on layer. The more I did, the more I felt I belonged to this new world. With growing interest, I kept sculpting. ______.
Lizzie was working in the studio too. For minutes, a neck or leg would suddenly come to life. “When you do it, it’s like magic, ” I said.
She replied, “No, Bonny. Not magic. It’s a given thing, a talent from who knows where, who knows who. But once you discover you have it, whatever it is, it’s not to be wasted. Life’s too short to waste it. ”
Then came my summer holiday. I drew every day, boats, gulls and fishermen. I made sculptures with wet sand. My parents seemed surprised at my new interest. I never had such a perfect holiday.
Months later, a cardboard arrived to me in a post. It was of me sitting on the horse.
So here I am, twenty years on, working as a sculptor. As I look out from my sculpture studio window, I see Lizzie’s Horse and Rider and all around my sculptures are gathered.
Magic life, I think.
27. What did Lizzie ask Bonny to do?
A. To mix up her plaster. B. To be her sculpture’s rider.
C. To ride bikes with her. D. To have a look at her horse.
28. Which of the following sentences can be put into the ______ in the passage?
A. I felt afraid to show Lizzie mywork B. I also started to have my ownstudio
C. I was able to sculpt better thanLizzie D. I was never happier with what I’ddone
29. Why did Bonny keep Lizzie’s Horse and Rider for twenty years?
A. Because it reminded Bonny of her childhood.
B. Because it started Bonny’s career as a sculptor.
C. Because it encouraged Bonny to solve problems.
D. Because it taught Bonny the importance of practice.
30. Why did Bonny say she had a magic life? What did she learn from it?(请用约40词回答)

How did the Maya count in ancient times? How many bags of corn did they have? How many did they sell? Did all the crops arrive at the city market? To answer these important daily questions, they used some numbers like this:
The Maya was good at math. They counted in groups of 20, not 10. They wrote numbers in columns going up. The bottom row was the “ls” column, the next row up was 20s, then 400s, and so on. For numbers, they used a dot () for 1, a line for 5, and a shell () shape to show zero. Numbers 1 to 19 were written with a combination of lines and dots. Can you read the number in the following picture? It’s the number 1209(three 400s + no 20s + nine 1s).
The Maya also kept three different calendars. The first divided the year into 18 months of 20 days each, plus a short month of 5 days. The short month was believed to be unlucky, a time when spirits walked.
The second calendar repeated every 260 days. This was used to plan religious activities.
When talking about events long ago, they used a calendar called “the long count.” This had a span of about 5,136 years. Year 1 on this calendar was 3114 BCE on our calendar.
Each city and village had a calendar keeper, who was in charge of saying when to celebrate holidays and when to expect rain or plant crops. But farmers could probably also tell the time of the year from the sun and stars.
29. The Maya created their way of counting mainly to ________.
A. celebrate local holidays B. plan religious activities
C. keep different calendars D. solve everyday problems
30. According to Maya math, the number in Picture ________ is equal to “414”.
A. B. C. D.
31. Which of the following about Maya calendars is TRUE?
A. Three kinds of calendars were used for different purposes.
B. The first calendar was usually used to plan religious activities.
C. “The long count” calendar had a history of about 3,114 years.
D. The short month in the first calendar was thought to bring good luck.
32What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The development of numbers and calendars in Maya.
B. The introduction of the Maya numbers and calendars.
C. The situation of Maya numbers and calendars nowadays.
D. The difference between numbers in Maya and other places.

In recent years, China has found many birds die from window collisions. There was a higher number in cities like Guangzhou and Shanghai with large numbers of buildings. “Up to 1 billion birds die each year hitting buildings in the USA, and there might be a similar number in China”, according to China Daily. Most of these dead birds are migratory birds. There has already been diminution in numbers of many of these birds for other reasons, and window collisions add to the loss of their members.
There are two main reasons for window collisions. The first is that during day time birds see the reflection in glass as open space and fly into it, because birds have trouble seeing glass. Also, at night it is due to the street lights and various lighting reflection on the glass, which take their attention away from their path.
“To control glass reflections, we used stickers to decorate windows in 2018,” said Li Binbin, a professor of Environmental Sciences at Duke Kunshan University in Jiangsu Province. This simple effort reduced the collisions at the site to almost zero. Later, the university also tried lowering the use of large windows.
In 2020, in Shenzhen, a city with the world’s second-highest number of buildings over 150 meters tall, bird-shaped stickers are used to break up the reflectivity of the glass in some parks. Meanwhile, an art studio has designed ultra-violet patterns for windows, as ultra-violet light can be seen by birds but not humans, and this particular solution also protects the beauty of buildings.
Keeping bird-safety standard for use in the construction field could bring greater improvements. In October 2019, experts from China and Britain called for more bird-friendly buildings.
Building owners are encouraged to turn off unnecessary lights at night during bird migration periods, in spring and fall. Last year, Lanshan County in China’s Hunan Province, which is located on a migration route, turned off certain street lights so that birds would not get lost at night.
There is a need to raise awareness of the problem because biodiversity protection in cities may require the joint efforts of wildlife workers, city planners, building designers and the general public.
33. Which of the following may cause bird collisions with windows?
A. The city buildings are too high. B. These birds are migratory birds.
C. Lighted windows hurt birds’ eyes easily. D. Different light leads birds to the wrong way.
34. How have people tried to reduce window collisions, according to the passage?
A. By increasing the number of big windows. B. By making buildings look brighter at night.
C. By lowering reflectivity with special designs. D. By decorating tall buildings more beautifully.
35. What does the underlined word “diminution” probably mean?
A. research B. discussion C. change D. drop
36. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Controlling bird collisions helps keep more bird kinds alive.
B. Window collisions are the main reason for the death of birds.
C. Birds are easy to lose their direction at the migratory seasons.
D. Bird-friendly buildings can increase the safety of the buildings.

It was just after the Fourth of July, my twin sister Grace and I were playing on the beach at Grandparents’ house. The sky was as clear as the water. I saw Mom coming toward us with her camera and a Santa’s hat.
“I’m glad Mom’s taking our Christmas picture now, so we don’t have to get it done at a studio this year,” Grace said.
The Christmas picture is a big deal in our house. Mom prints the photo on the Christmas cards. Mom says that sharing her “angels” at Christmas is one of her greatest holiday joys. In fact, the year we were born, Mom dressed us to look like angels and stuck feathery wings to our backs. Every year after that, the Christmas photo was of Grace and me trying to smile as we stood uncomfortably in scratchy dresses. It’s a little embarrassing when our family and friends talk about it every year.
When Mom printed last year’s photo and I saw the expression on my face, I said, “Next time, maybe ▲ so our smiles look real.”
“We’re always happy in our bathing suits at the beach,” Grace pointed out.
So Mom agreed to try a beach photo this year. That’s why we were there.
After a while, Grandpa came over. “What are you girls up to?”
“Making a snowman for the photo,” I said.
I had an idea. I asked Grandpa to lie in the sand, “Come on, Grace, let’s cover him!”
“Bottle caps for buttons and sticks for arms,” said Grace.
We made sand around Grandpa’s head and his body. He made a fine “snowman”.
“Mom, come quick!” I said.
But before mom could take the picture, Grandpa jumped up and shouted, running toward the sea. Mom laughed and took a picture of that, but it was not the picture we were hoping for!
I felt a raindrop. “It looked like another year of scratchy dresses with smiles not true,” disappointedly I threw myself back onto the wet sand. It felt scratchy against my sunburned back, like those holiday dresses. Then I began to plow the sand with my arms and legs, just like doing star jumps lying down.
“Mom, come look!” I shouted.
“A sand angel! Good idea, Caroline!” She took a photo.
Grace threw on the Santa hat and lay next to me. Our arms and legs moved up and down. “Keep going. Great! I got it!” said Mom. She smiled with pride…
We finished our Christmas cards the day after Thanksgiving that year. Below the photo, I wrote, “Smiling Angels in the Snow!”
37. What did Mom do every year at Christmas time?
A. She took photos on the beach.
B. She drew many pictures of angels.
C. She bought a new camera for her daughters.
D. She showed photos of her daughters to others.
38. Which of the following sentence can be put into the blank in Paragraph 4?
A. we should try another studio B. we should wear comfortable clothes
C. we should spend Christmas on the beach D. we should take photos with Grandparents
39. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A. Christmas Photo in July B. Angels with Scratchy Dresses
C. Fun Day before Christmas D. Christmas Snowman on the Beach
40. Why did the writer write “Smiling Angels in the Snow!” below the photo on the cards?

If you’ve always wanted to be a high flier, then skydiving is the right sport for you! Skydiving is the activity of jumping from a plane or other aircrafts at about 4000m and falling through the sky before opening a parachute.
The actual history of skydiving started with Frenchman Andre-Jacques Garnerin who made successful parachute jumps in 1797 from a hot air balloon. Later, more people took it up and had regular competitions, which led to it becoming an international sport in 1952. For some people, skydiving has become a sport they enjoy doing for a lifetime through which they meet new friends, learn, progress and even compete.
The sport of skydiving has a whole range of training methods. Tandem skydiving is the most common way for beginners to get started in this exciting sport. During a tandem dive, the student is connected to an instructor. The student is able to enjoy the sensation of free fall, while the instructor takes control of vital activities such as opening the parachute and performing a safe landing. While falling through the sky, the “arch” position is the best body position for beginners. The shape of a banana is similar to the body position. To feel the sensation of the “arch” you can lie face down on the ground and extend your arms out while keeping them off the ground. Do the same thing with your legs — legs extended with knee bend and keeping them off the floor. This “arch” position allows for a smooth free fall.
Today, skydiving has become a popular activity around the world. Why not take the chance to skydive in your coming vacation?

In the open ocean, there’s nowhere to hide. Being visible isn’t safe for animals that live here. So many of them take up a remarkable form of camouflage: they’re transparent.
Transparent animals let light pass through their bodies the same way it passes through a window. These animals usually live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3300 feet (1,000 m) — as far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a light touch.
How does an animal become see-through? The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. But a transparent object doesn’t interact with light, at least not very much. To become transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. According to Sonke Johnsen, a marine biologist and professor at Duke University, avoiding absorption is actually easy. Living materials allow light to get through them if they don’t have pigments, which are chemicals that absorb specific colors of light. Pigments make your blood red and plant leaves green, but if an animal doesn’t have them, its tissues won’t absorb light.
__________ Light bends and scatters when it goes through different materials of an animal-skin, fat, muscle, and more. All that bending means light can’t pass straight through the animal, so the animal is visible. Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are just very small without much tissue to scatter light. Others build a large, clear mass of non-living, jelly-like material and spread themselves over it. Actually the living tissue of the animal is pretty thin.
Eyes and stomachs are hard to hide. To keep enemies from seeing their eyes or their last meal, transparent animals use disguises. Eyes might be placed far away from the rest of the body. A stomach may be covered by something like a mirror which makes others only see the ocean around the animal. It may also take strange, needle-like shape that is difficult to see the edge.

34. Which is the best sentence for in Paragraph 4?
A. How do large animals protect themselves?

35. The underlined word “disguises” means the ways to ________.
A. eat less B. fight enemies C. see further D. change appearance
36. Which of the following animals might be transparent?
A. A large animal with small living parts.

I was an art-dealer in Berlin. Since the war broke out, there hadn’t been much business to do. I decided to visit my former customer—a man who was probably the oldest yet alive. In the course of decades, what he had bought from us for low prices should be worth a large amount of money today.
I finally saw him, in an old and cheap house. He was blind, living with his wife and daughter. He was overjoyed to meet me and would like to show me his collection.
Then a strange thing happened. His wife, who had been listening with a pleasant smile, was scared. She begged me to come later. An hour later, the daughter arrived at my hotel with embarrassment, “We have to ask a favour of you. When you get back, Father will want to show you his collection, and the collection...the collection, well there’s very little of it left.” She went on difficultly, “soon after the war broke out, Father became blind. Each afternoon, he has the paintings on the table and fingers them one by one. The situation is terrible now, but Father knows nothing about the inflation. We don’t read him that sort of things from the newspaper.”
“The first painting we sold was a very valuable one. We put the money in a bank. In a few weeks, it was gone! We had to sell another one. Every piece we sold was replaced by a sheet of blank paper...He would not survive the knowledge of the loss. Today may be the most excited experiences since he got blind. If you will lend yourself to the lie...”
I promised to play up. I spent the whole afternoon in their house. The old man showed me blank pieces and pointed at every detail so surely that I couldn’t help leaning forward to read the non-existent paintings. I didn’t know what to say in front of all the blank sheets of paper until I saw the mother and the daughter. I pulled myself together and played my role, “Certainly you are right. It is valuable!”
“Here’s a man who knows what’s what!” he said cheerfully to the two women. “When I am dead, you could sell them. You’ll be the richest in the town!”
Not for years, not since 1914, had I seen such happiness in the face of a German.
37. The family was in a terrible situation because ________.
A. the daughter took all the money away
B. the war made the family’s money gone quickly
C. the old man’s collection was actually not valuable at all
D. the writer replaced the old man’s collection with blank paper
38. What made the wife scared when the old man offered to show his collection?
A. Most of the old man’s collection was sold.
B. Some of the old man’s collection was damaged
C. She thought the old man might hurt the collection
D. She was afraid the old man would sell the collection
39. How did the writer feel when he saw the old man’s “collection”?
A. Sorry. B. Thankful. C. Unsatisfied. D. Amazed.
40. Why did the writer help the old man’s wife and daughter to lie? (请用约40词回答)
