For decades, the homework standard has been a "10-minute rule," which recommends a daily maximum of 10 minutes of homework per grade level.
But some schools have begun to give their youngest students a break. A Massachusetts elementary school has announced a no-homework pilot program for the coming school year, lengthening the school day by two hours to provide more in-class instruction. "We really want kids to go home at 4 o' clock, tired," Kelly Elementary School Principal Jackie Glasheen said. "We want them to enjoy their families. We want them to go to soccer practice or football practice."
New solutions and approaches to homework differ by community, and these local debates are complicated by the fact that even education experts disagree about what's best for kids.
The most comprehensive research on homework to date comes from an analysis by Duke University professor Harris Cooper, who found evidence of a positive correlation (相关) between homework and student achievement, meaning students who did homework performed better in school. Coopers analysis focused on how homework impacts academic achievement - test scores, for example. The correlation was stronger for older students - in seventh through 12th grade - than for those in younger grades, for whom there was a weak relationship between' homework and performance.
Despite the weak correlation between homework and performance for young children, Cooper argues that a small amount of homework is useful for all students. Second-graders should not be doing two hours of homework each night, he said, but they also shouldn't be doing no homework.
However, Cathy Vattcrott, an education professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, thinks there is not sufficient proof that homework is helpful for students in elementary school. "Correlation' is not causation," she said. "Does homework cause achievement, or do high achievers do more homework?" Vatterott thinks there should be more emphasis on improving the quality of homework tasks, and she supports efforts to ban homework for younger kids.
24. What will Kelly Elementary School do this coming school year?
A. Get rid of homework. B. Make the school day shorter.
C. Have more physical education classes. D. Ask parents to help with students' homework.
25. Which of the following reflects Cooper' s analysis?
A. High achievers are likely to do more homework.
B. Better test scores can inspire students to do homework.
C. Students in higher grades benefit much from doing homework.
D. Doing homework improves young students' problem-solving skills.
26. What is Vatterott's attitude to Coopers statements about second-graders?
A. Supportive. B. Ambiguous. C. Critical. D. Casual.
27. What is the best title for the text? .
A. What is quality homework? B. Is homework good for students?
C. Why do students hate homework? D. Did the "10-minute rule" for homework fail?

Plants are our useful companions on Earth. They consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen, provide us with dietary and medicinal products and brighten up our environment. However, they are the victims of circumstances. Planted in an adequately sunny spot and provided with water they thrive However, put in unfortunate conditions, they have no choice but to wither (枯萎) and die. But what if plants could relocate to better places?
It was this question that Sun Tianqi, founder of a Chinese robotics firm Uncross, asked himself while watching a dead sunflower. "I thought if it could have taken a 30-foot walk out of the shadow to where the other sunflowers were, it would have lived healthily," he said.
He decided then to build a robot that would let plants do just that. The innovative roboticist took one of his company's traditional HEXA robot models and built a "flowerpot," which replaced HEXA s shell.
According to its site, HEXA is a "six-legged robot that comes complete with all the necessary sensors." The result is an impressive plant robot that can chase (追逐) the sun, hide for shelter, interact with humans when tapped and perform a funny dance to indicate it is thirsty.
Although the plant robot may have many useful future applications, Tianqi's reasons for creating it seem to have been philogophical. "Plants are passive. No matter if they are being cut, bitten, burned or pulled from the earth, or when they lack sunshine, water, or are too hot or cold, they will hold still and take whatever is happening to them," he said. "They have the fewest degrees of freedom among all the creatures in nature. This is simply the setting that nature gives to plants. I do hope that this project can bring some inspiration to the relationship between technology and unfavorable natural settings," concluded Tianqi.
28. What information is implied in the underlined sentence in paragraph I?
A. Plants need great care to grow well. B. Plants are used for many purposes.
C. Plants have a life cycle like humans. D. Plants are important to the environment.
29. What inspired Tianqi to build a plant robot?
A. His environmental awareness. B. His love for sunflowers.
C. A broken flowerpot. D. A dead flower.
30. What do we know about the plant robot?
A. It is solar-powered. B. It enables plants to move.
C. It feeds nutrients to plants. D. It offers growers useful tips.
31. What did Tianqi try to convey by the words in the last paragraph?
A. His robot needs much improvement. B. Technology can set human beings free.
C. His robot has many useful future applications. D. Technology can remove natural disadvantages.
D
"Liking" healthy foods on social media platforms like Facebook may encourage others to eat a balanced diet, new research has found.
For the study, the research team asked 369 university students to estimate the amount of fruit, vegetables, and sugary drinks their Facebook friends consumed on a daily basis- They then cross-referenced this information with the participants' own actual eating habits and showed that those who felt their online social circles "approved" of eating junkfood (垃圾食品) consumed significantly more themselves, in fact, an extra portion (一份) of unhealthy snack foods and sugary drinks for every three portions they believed their online social circles did.
Conversely, those who thought their friends ate a healthy diet had more portions' of fruit and vegetables. These habits could have developed from seeing friends' posts about the food and drinks they consumed, or simply a general impression of their overall health.
There was no significant link between the participants' eating habits and their body mass index (体重指数) an indicator of weight. The researchers said the next stage of their work would track a participant group over time to see whether the influence of social media on eating habits had a longer-term' impact on weight and overall health.
The researchers said the findings to date provide the first evidence to suggest our online social circles could be silently influencing our eating habits, with important implications for using social media to encourage healthy eating. "With children and young people spending a huge amount of time interacting with influencers via social media, the important new findings from this study could help shape how we deliver interventions that help them adopt healthy eating habits from a young age, and stick with them for life," added Claire Farrow, director of Aston University's Applied Health Research Group.
32. What did the researchers ask the participants about?
A. Their body mass index. B. Their opinions on sugary drinks.
C. Their consumption of fruit and vegetables. D. Their impression of their online social circles' diet.
33. What might the study suggest?
A. We eat more junk food than expected. B. We tend to overestimate our overall health.
C. We copy the eating habits of our online friends. D. We like to compete with others on the Internet.
34. What does the underlined word "Conversely" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Additionally. B. Contrarily. C. Unexpectedly. D. Consequently.
35. What might Farrow call on influencers to do?
A. Stick with their life habits. B. Post more pictures of healthy foods.
C. Seek more diet advice from the young. D. Help young people quit addiction to social media.

Music has always been an essential part of my family. As a little girl, I often watched my mom singing with others. As I grew older, she and I would sing while we did the dishes or hung clothes. My brother Dean was also a musical soul. In good time or in bad, there was always music in our house. It shaped us, comforted us, and gave us a way to express feelings that might otherwise have gone unspoken.
After Dean became a father, we learned that his oldest son was on the autism spectrum. My nephew Carl did not handle social situations well, and sometimes even to speak aloud outside the family for him was a struggle. He worked very hard to overcome his fears, so much so that the year he was eight, he decided he wanted to be part of a music program with the other children in his Sunday school class. The part he had been offered was one that required him to sing a verse all on his own—a solo.
My brother carefully explained to him that this would mean singing in front of the audience. There would be no one singing with him. Carl considered this very carefully. After a couple of days, he decided that he would accept the part. He explained to us that he believed he could do it because it was a very special occasion. He said he knew his daddy would help him to be the best singer.
For over a month, he and his father practiced together. Every evening would find them locked away in the music room. My brother played the guitar, and my nephew's small voice came from somewhere deep down inside his little body. He gained confidence, and when the day of the concert arrived, he was certain all would go well. My brother waited backstage, giving Carl double thumbs-up, and he came out to sit with the rest of the family to watch and take photos.
注意:
1、续写词数应为150左右;
When it was finally time for Carl to sing, the music played on, and he froze.

答案
1-5 BCABA 6-10 BBCAC
11-15 BACAA 16-20 BABAC
A篇
21. A。 根据Bike to Mount Vernon部分中的This scenic trail takes riders through Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve and Belleview Park可知,这条骑行线路会经过Belleview Park。
Bike the Great Allegheny Passage部分中的National Geographic calls this trail “An American Classic”及Distance: 300 miles可知,这条300英里的骑行线路受到了《国家地理》杂志的热推。
Cooper's analysis focused on how homework impacts academic achievement ... The correlation was stronger for older students ... than for those in younger grades可知,Cooper的研究发现,学生所在的年级越高,越能从做作业中获益(提高成绩)。
26. C。 第三段中的even education experts disagree about what's best for kids也是提示,第三段为过渡段,提示下文内容围绕“专家学者就作业这件事产生的分歧”展开。
It was this question that Sun Tianqi, founder of a Chinese robotics firm Vincross, asked himself while watching a dead sunflower及第三段中的He decided then to build a robot可知,一株失去生命的向日葵让孙天齐萌生了发明一款可以“照顾”植物的机器人的想法。
30. B。 But what if plants could relocate to better places、第二段中的I thought if it could have taken a 30‑foot walk ... lived healthily、第三段中的He decided then to build a robot that would let plants do just that及第四段中的plant robot that can chase the sun, hide for shelter可知,孙天齐正是看到了植物不能随便移动的不良后果,才设计出了一款机器人,帮助植物根据情况进行移动。
根据第二段中的the research team asked 369 university students to estimate the amount of fruit, vegetables, and sugary drinks their Facebook friends consumed on a daily basis可知,研究人员询问参与者他们对社交平台上的朋友们的饮食习惯的印象。
33. C。 根据第二、三段的内容可知,实验参与者会根据社交网站上朋友的饮食选择来决定自己的食物选择(those who felt their online social circles “approved” of eating junk food consumed significantly more themselves、those who thought their friends ate a healthy diet had more portions of fruit and vegetables),也就是说,该研究表明,我们会模仿这些网络朋友的饮食习惯。
34. B。 划线词上文与划线词所在句描述了两种截然不同的现象(junk food、unhealthy snack foods and sugary drinks与a healthy diet、fruit and vegetables形成对比),由此可推知,划线词意为“相反地,反之”。
35. B。 These habits could have developed from seeing friends' posts about the food and drinks they consumed, or simply a general impression of their overall health可知,我们社交圈里的食物、饮料的图片会影响我们的饮食习惯。
38. A。逗号后面的until引导时间状语从句,A项Play around with different layouts与逗号后面的you're happy with the arrangement of the frames and the spacing in between them是按时间逻辑顺序发生的动作。
40. B。B项中的frames与设空处下一句中的which one构成照应;B项中的hang your frames与设空处上文中的hammer a nail into the centre、remove the masking tape及 tear away the paper是按时间逻辑顺序发生的动作。
41. A。 I had just closed my law office可知,作者不再从事律师工作了,given up符合语境。

作文
Dear fellow students,
With many of us students engaged in our studies, some stay up late into night and ignore physical exercise. Therefore, I am appealing to us students to live an active and healthy life.
For one thing, it’s of vital importance to sleep as early as possible, which can make you energetic the whole day. Staying up late frequently makes it hard for you to focus on your class. For another, we are supposed to attach great importance to workout, which not only helps build up our body but also help us better adapt to the burden of study.
Many people fail to achieve ideal results even though they have strong interest in what they learn. The fact is that it can be quite demanding to have a better outcome without better learning habits.
Let’s take the class for example. As is known to all, it’s of vital importance to remain focused in class whether it is interesting or not. Some students, however, are always daydreaming, yawning or attracted by something else, thus contributing to the later time-consuming homework.
Forming better learning habit requires time, energy, determination and self-discipline. As for me, making a plan for your study is beneficial, and the plan should be updated according to the progress of your study from time to time. Secondly, you are expected to make full use of the time in the class and don’t do anything irrelevant to the class.
Maybe it’s easier said than done, but please never give up and keep practicing. Only in this way can better results be brought about.
