One day an elderly postman knocked on the door of a house and said, “Take the letter...”
As he said this, a little girl’s voice came from inside, “I am coming... Please wait.”
But even after five minutes no one came. The postman said again, “Is there anyone to take your letter? I have to go to many more places.”
The girl replied. “Uncle, if you are in a hurry. put the letter under the door. I am coming. It will take some more time…”
The postman said, “No, I am waiting. It is a registered letter. So someone’s signature (签字) is also needed.”
About ten minutes later. the door opened.
The postman was a little angry, and was about to shout at the girl, However, as soon as the door opened, he was shocked to see that in front of him was a little handicapped girl who had no legs. The postman quietly gave her the letter, took her signature and left.
The little girl often lived alone in her house. Her mother was not in this world and her father had to work far away.
In a month or two whenever mails came, the postman would knock and call for the girl and then wait patiently at the door. Gradually, interaction and attachment (情感) grew between them. The little girl noticed that the postman used to come barefoot(赤脚的) to deliver mails.
It rained one morning. When the postman left after giving a letter to the girl, his footprints were left on the wet ground. The girl came out with a paper, put it on print and took down a picture of his feet. She decided to give him a surprise on the New Year’s Day. which was around the corner.

Arthur was messy. He didn’t try to make messes, but he didn’t try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was done eating. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. “Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.
“You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m done cleaning today.” And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom’s spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn’t like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called.
“There weren’t any socks in your hamper, so I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt.”

When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain — a 3, 900-foot peak (山峰) near where I live in Surrey, British Columbia, I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the top. But I loved to challenge something bigger than myself. Soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy I’d finally found a hobby.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen, whom I’d met on the Internet. Two years ago, on 30 December when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to climb 11, 240-foot Mount Hood.
It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less danger of the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 am, following the path alongside the ski runs. The temperature was about — 10℃. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued together.
After about five hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a plateau (高原) at about 10,000 feet, just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind conditions were terrible. My skin felt as though it were burning. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead. We checked our equipment and were prepared for the climb.
The way we followed grew narrower and steeper (更陡的), At around 9 am, we reached an ice step. It was about three or four feet tall. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step. It felt good, Confidently, I thought I was safe. I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a crack (爆裂声), and a whole piece of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.

Sista raced ahead, the sea breeze streaming against her face. Rafi finally caught up and then they rested in the shade.
I’m hungry. I know where there’s a great apple tree.” Sista said, “It belongs to an oldlady called Susan who lives in the little house by the hill. I heard she’s stubborn, but that sometimes she gives fruit in return for an errand(跑腿).”
“Let’s go,” Rafi said. They crossed a stream by hopping from rock to rock. Finally, upon ahilltop, they saw a splendid apple tree with bright red fruits.
A small farmhouse stood at the bottom of the hill. Rafi’s heart pounded as Sista knocked onthe door. An elderly woman answered.
“Yes?” the lady asked, staring at the girls.
“We heard ...“ said Sista, her voice shaky, “that we could run an errand for you in exchangefor apples.”
Susan raised one eyebrow. “Ah, yes. ” She clicked her tongue. “Nothing is free, eh?”
She led the girls into the kitchen. When passing the living room, Sista found that the wallwas decorated with colourful crayon drawings, which seem to be children’s. She wondered whodrew these since Susan was alone, with no grandchildren, even no families or relatives. The ladygrabbed two baskets, one large and one small, and pushed them into the girls hands. “Go fill these with apples. Come right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree, climbed the branches, and picked the ripest apples. After filling the baskets, they returned to the house.
Susan filled a bag with rice and dried beans, and then she handed it to Sista.“Take this bagand the large basket of apples to the Gomez family. Do you know them?”
The girls nodded. Sista had heard that Mr. Gomez has been sick in bed for a long time andMrs.Gomez has to raise three little kids.

No sooner had I finished the midterm exam than I knew I failed in maths again. Mrs. Steward, my maths teacher, asked me to stay after school to talk about my maths study. I was among those students who worked hard and achieved academic success at school — apart from maths. Though I did well in many other subjects, I wouldn’t be on the honor roll (光荣榜) that term if I couldn’t make significant progress in maths. And, the honor roll would be announced in just several weeks. I was frustrated.
Having spotted my depression, Mrs. Steward said, “There will be another important maths test before the honor roll is fixed. Cheer up! I could spare some time after school to help you. You can make it.” “No, thanks,” I declined, adding that I just wanted to go home and never think about maths again. “I am just naturally a poor maths learner.” I almost cried.
Mrs. Steward didn’t give up. She looked me in the eye and said, “You are good at learning. I believe you can change it if we work together.” For a moment, I kept silent, wondering if she might be right. “What time does your bus come?” she asked. “In half an hour,” I replied. She asked if I would like to use the time to deal with the math problems I met in the exam. Encouraged by her, I began to look at my midterm maths paper.
We settled the difficulties in the paper and made a plan to meet every other day after school for the following three weeks. She went over each problem, carefully explaining the solutions. Sometimes I had difficulty understanding her explanation, and she would come up with a different approach to getting across the answer. Soon, the day to take the test came.

About twenty minutes he waited, and then a tall man in a long overcoat, with collar turned up to his ears, hurried across from the opposite side of the street. He went directly to the waiting man.
“Is that you, Bob?” he asked, doubtfully.
“Is that you, Jimmy Wells?” cried the man in the door.
“Bless my heart!” exclaimed the new arrival, grasping both the other’s hands with his own. “It’s Bob! I was certain I’d find you here if you were still alive. Well, well, well! —twenty years is a long time. How has the West treated you, old man?”
“It has given me everything I asked it for. You’ve changed lots, Jimmy. I never thought you were so tall by two or three inches (英寸).”
“Oh, I grew a bit after I was twenty.”
“Doing well in New York, Jimmy?”
“Moderately. I have a position in one of the city departments. Come on, Bob; we’ll go around to a place I know of, and have a good long talk about old times.”
The two men started up the street, arm in arm. The man from the West, his egotism (自我) enlarged by success, was beginning to outline the history of his career. The other, submerged (埋) in his overcoat, listened with interest.
At the corner stood a drug store, brilliant with electric lights. When they came into this glare each of them turned simultaneously (同时地) to gaze upon the other’s face.
The man from the West stopped suddenly and released his arm
“You’re not Jimmy Wells,” he snapped. “Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change a man’s nose from a Roman (鹰钩鼻) to a pug (狮子鼻).”
“It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one,” said the tall man. “You’ve been under arrest (被捕) for ten minutes, ‘Silky’ Bob. Chicago thinks you may have dropped over our way and wants to have a chat with you. Going quietly, are you? That’s sensible. Now, before we go on to the police station here’s a note I was asked to hand you. You may read it here at the the window. It’s from Patrolman (巡警) Wells.”
The man from the West unfolded the little piece of paper handed him. His hand was steady when he began to read, but it trembled a little by the time he had finished. The note was rather short.
“Bob: I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your cigar I saw it was the face of the man wanted (被通缉的) in Chicago. Somehow I couldn’t do it myself, so I went around and got a plain clothes man to do the job. ——JIMMY.”

Kelsey was grateful for everything her mother had done for her. In spite of being raised by her mother alone, Kelsey received a good education, and now held a leading position in a large company.
Recently the company was making corporate brochures in which achievers would share their success and thank their parents as well. For this, the achievers would have to take photos of themselves with their parents.
Kelsey didn’t really want that because her mother had put on a lot of weight due to a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle. Kelsey managed to contact one of the best photographers and made a reservation in advance. When she and her mother came to the photographer’s studio, Kelsey took the man aside and said, “Please make sure my mom looks thinner in the photo.” But the photographer said what her mother really needed was a diet or exercise, not a photographer.
Kelsey insisted that he shouldn’t make her mother look like a slim dancer. She just expected him to do his best to make her mother look a bit thinner. The photographer finally agreed and took measures to hide some details, setting the right light and choosing better angles for shots. But it was not easy to fool the camera.
Kelsey’s mother noticed how the photographer was having a hard time and how her daughter was shaking her head. She smiled and said that she just wanted photos with Kelsey no matter whether she looked heavy or not.
The next day, Kelsey came to pick up the photos with her mother. The photographer printed out several photos, copied the rest on a flash drive (闪存盘) and handed them to Kelsey. Kelsey was disappointed and complained. How she wished her mother could look much thinner! The photographer shrugged (耸肩) helplessly and said nothing. Kelsey’s mother, however, said that the photographer did a good job and she was who she was. Then she told Kelsey to accept the fact that her mother was not “the tiny girl Thumbelina in the fairy tale.”

We found out that Jenny was hearing impaired, when she was four and a half years old. Several surgeries and speech classes later, when she was seven, we found out that Jenny had Rheumatoid Arthritis (关节炎) . She could not put pressure on the heels of her feet, so she walked on tiptoe, and when the pain became unbearable, I carried her. All through grade school, and on into high school, Jenny suffered, yet never complained. She took her medicine, and I would often wrap her feet in steaming towels and hold her until the pain eased. But as soon as she could withstand (顶住) the pain, Jenny immediately carried on as though she were pain free.
She wore a smile on her face, a song on her lips, and a love and acceptance of others, that was simply amazing. I don’t remember her ever voicing self-pity. She ran when she could run. She played when she could play. She danced when she could dance. And when she could do none of these things, she took her medicine and she waited until she could.
Jenny, a beautiful blonde, with warm brown eyes, was never a cheerleader. She never competed in a sport. Jenny continued to have one surgery after another on her ears. Her hearing improved to 60%, and she taught herself to read lips. She carried a pillow to school, all through high school. She was totally mainstreamed, popular and funny, watching every football game, cheering the team on, carrying her pillow everywhere she went, so that she could ease the pain when she sat down.
Then came her senior year. She would be considered for scholarships. However, school activities, especially sports, could often mean the difference between receiving an award or losing out, so Jenny came to a decision. Although she couldn’t compete as a football player, she could provide supporting services for the high school football team. Jenny began to beg the football coach. She pleaded (恳求). She promised.

I think about him every time I pass by a pink magnolia (木兰) tree in bloom (开花). My Irish Grandpa, tall and thin, bursting with energy and laughter, held a special place in my heart. He taught me that some challenges were worthwhile to take.
He lived across the street with Grandma, and their home was open to us whenever we ran over to visit. In their garden, flowers, vegetables—whatever he planted grew well. From early spring through late autumn, the backyard exploded with colors. On the side of the yard grew a high magnolia tree. Besides being beautiful, it was perfect for climbing, but I didn’t dare to!
I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get back down, or that I would get stuck high up in the tree. So I never tried. But I wanted to climb up the tree, especially when watching my friends climb it up and overlook the neighborhood. I wanted to conquer the tree and sit on top of the world too. And Grandpa knew it. He tried convincing me and even offered to climb up the tree with me—which always made me laugh! How could my Grandpa with gray hair know how to climb?
One early spring morning, Grandpa was standing in the doorway waiting for me when Grandma and Mom were busy in the kitchen. “Come over here”, he said excitedly, “The tree is blooming lollipops (棒棒糖) instead of flowers! ”
“What?” I exclaimed and ran across to the backyard to see the amazing sight. “No pink magnolia flowers this year,” he said sadly as he shook his head. “But this is the first year ever for our tree to bloom lollipops!” He glanced at me. “Do you think you could climb up the tree—just to the lowest branch—and gather one or two? Then throw them down to me. I would love a lollipop!”

    I was staring in amazement.

Michael and Adele had been happily married for 63 years when a terrible car accident separated them. Adele passed away in the accident, and Michael missed her very much. Every Sunday, the elderly man would get up at 8 a.m., dress up for a date with his wife, buy her favorite flowers and visit her.
One day, while on the bus on his way to visit his wife, Michael’s attention was drawn to a woman who was sobbing. She was in her mid-twenties and reminded him of his daughter. Out of concern, Michael inquired gently, “Hey, are you okay? Do you mind if I take a seat here? Talking about it may make you feel better.”
The woman, teary-eyed, looked up at him and finally nodded. As Michael took a seat, he noticed she kept staring at the flowers in his hands. “Do you like these flowers as well? These are my wife’s favorite flowers.”
Just then, the woman burst out crying once more. “Actually, it’s my birthday today. I wanted my husband to buy me some flowers too, but we didn’t have enough money…” she said. “Oh, thank you for listening to me. Those are really beautiful flowers, by the way.”
“Actually, these flowers are for my date with my wife,” Michael explained. “She left me a few years ago, but I go visit her at her grave every Sunday.”
“I’m sorry for your loss!” the woman said. “Oh, I wish I could tell you the whole story about my wife and me, but it looks like we just arrived at my stop. I hope to see you again … Mrs …”Michael asked.
“Claire Duncan. You can call me Claire.” “It was a pleasure speaking with you, Claire. You can call me Mr. Collins,” Michael said. “Oh, you can have these,” he added, handing her the flowers. “Have a wonderful day!”
“Oh, no, those are for your wife. I can’t take them,” Claire protested, but Michael persisted and eventually handed her the flowers.

One weekend, Mum and Dad both had to work, which meant that neither of them had time to look after Joe and Bella. But the two kids didn’t mind. They were going to spend the weekend with Gran, and Gran had promised to take them to the beach! But when they woke up on Saturday morning, and looked out of the window, they found the rain was pouring down!
Bella pressed her nose against the glass and said hopefully, “We can still go, can’t we?” But when Gran arrived to collect them, it was still pouring, and Gran said they would just have to spend the day at her house instead.
They tried taking Gran’s dog, Selby, for a walk, but when they opened the door, Selby took one look and ran back inside again! They did some homework, ready for Monday, and when they stopped — it was still raining Eventually, Gran went off to do some housework. Joe decided to do more homework. He had tests coming up at school and Mum and Dad were always on at him to work harder. Joe asked his sister to keep quiet. After a while, though, he heard noises from the kitchen. What was Bella up to? He got up and looked round the door. Bella was mixing something in a huge mixing bowl.
“What’s that?” Joe asked, a little annoyed.
“It’s a lovely cake,” said Bella happily. “But you can’t have any.”
“That’s a relief,”said Joe. “Because it looks terrible. And it smells worse!”
The cake mixture had all kinds of things in it and the smell was like no cake that Joe had ever smelled before!
“It’s not for humans,” said Bella. “It’s for dogs. I’ve made it specially for Selby, because he couldn’t go for his walk.”
“Well, I hope Selby likes it,” Joe said.
But Selby didn’t like it. When Bella put it down on the floor for him to eat, Selby took one smell and then ran out of the room! Bella burst into tears.

Last summer, my wife Angela and I helped our friend Diane move to a rented house in Connecticut.
Diane has two children, then aged 10 and 12, and when we arrived she was preparing to put a bed frame together. I offered to take over as she needed to pick up her children. Before leaving, she pointed out a white square on the wooden floor and said: “Would you cover that patch with the bed, please? I’m not sure what’s going on, but 1 think the floors are a little weak there.” We were on the ground floor, so there was no sense of danger. Diane’s only worry was that her son might jump out of bed and damage them.
The first three sections of the bed went together easily, but when I stood up to look for the fourth I heard a crack—I had stepped in the middle of the mysterious square. The floor broke and then gave way. Rather than throw my hands out to grab for support, I pressed them against my sides. I don’t know what made me do that- some strange instinct, or sheer luck. A second later I was underwater, it felt as if I had stepped into a swimming pool.
I resurfaced and started searching for a handhold, but felt only wet, slippery rock. I was in a well, made of large, rough stones. At least 15ft above me light spilled through the hole in the floor. I realized I was at the bottom of a well. Angela was frantically(紧张忙乱地)calling my name. “I’m OK!” I yelled. “Should I call 911?” she asked. “Yes,” I replied, breathlessly. “I think that would be a good idea.”
My dad is long gone, but he once told me something I will never forget: “Try never to panic, it is hard to get things right when you are panicked.” So while Angela spoke to the emergency services, I kept my head, took stock of(估量)my surroundings and tried to work out how to stay alive until help arrived.

“It’s been potatoes all week, mom! Can’t we go to the diner for a burger and an ice cream? That’s all I want for my birthday!” Eve’s 8-year-old threw his little arms around her shoulders and looked at her with puppy eyes. In her heart, she wanted to hold Dylan the biggest birthday party ever. But in reality, she could afford none of that after being let go from the third temporary job.
When Dylan saw tears rising in his mother’s eyes, he quickly changed his tone. The boy had seen her working hard to make ends meet and could not bear to hurt her. “Actually, mom, that potato salad looks delicious!” he said gently.
After the meal, the mother and son took a nap (小睡) that afternoon. But Dylan didn’t fall asleep and had something else in mind. While his mother was asleep, he carefully took out an envelope from his little pot. His mother didn’t know this, but he had saved a few dollars from the lunch money she had given him over the past few years.
He counted the money in the pot. “$28!” Dylan’s eyes lit up. “I’m sure we can get a good meal for $28!” He carried the money and left the house secretly. He took a short walk to the next block, where he almost cried with excitement as he saw the food truck that he had expected.
“Sir! Please give me everything I can get for $28!” the boy said cheerfully. But Martin, the owner of the food truck, frowned and replied, “I’m so sorry, kid. We’re out of everything!” “It’s my birthday, and I can’t even treat my mother to a nice meal. She does so much for me...I thought, for once, I would do something nice for her...” The boy kept talking out loud to himself, giving in to his urge to cry.

Liam, a fifth-grader, moved with his mom for a new apartment in a relatively cheaper area of the city after his father’s unexpected death, and began attending a neighborhood school.
Since he was an introvert, the thought of making friends always made him feel nervous, and moving into a new neighborhood meant he had to face his fears. On his first day, he didn’t talk to anyone or try to make friends, and during the mealtime, he sat at the corner table in the cafeteria and ate his lunch alone. No one in the class stepped forward to welcome him. Instead, they ignored him and refused to sit next to him in class.
The next day, he was sitting alone in the classroom when a boy approached him and asked, “Can I sit next to you?”
    “Sure, ”Liam smiled.
    “I’m Joel. And you?”
    “Liam. ”
“Is it your first day today?”
“No, it’s my second day. I recently moved into this neighborhood. ”
“Oh, I didn’t know that. I skipped school yesterday, so I thought it was your first day today. ”
As days passed, Liam and Joel discovered that they lived on the same street. After school, they often played catch in the nearby park, a game they both loved playing. It only took Liam a few weeks to become best friends with Joel.
One day, Joel skipped school, and Liam had to sit alone in class, wondering why. Feeling worried, he went to ask his class teacher.
“Liam, I’m so sorry, but your best friend got into an accident last night, ” the teacher put her hand on Liam’s shoulder. “He lost his parents in the car crash. ”
“Oh no!” Liam covered his face with his hands.
Two months later, Joel was allowed to go home after a spinal surgery. However, he couldn’t walk and was restricted to a wheelchair. The day he arrived home with his grandmother, Liam rushed to Joel’s house with a candy bar and the ball they used to play catch with.
Joel’s eyes lit upon seeing Liam. The boys talked to each other for hours before Liam’s mother came to pick him up at night.
While he was happy to see his friend after months, he felt terrible knowing Joel could never walk again. Moreover, seeing his elderly grandma struggle to push the wheelchair made Liam feel even worse.
“Mom, I feel so bad for Joel, ” he told his mother at the dinner table later that evening.
“I can understand, sweetheart. But you don’t have to feel sad. You can help your friend adjust to his new lifestyle and make him feel better. Pitying him would make him feel worse. ”

When I was a child, my mother often took me to a nursing home where I enjoyed spending time with the old people.
One day, a very old lady named Mrs. Kurtz seemed sad. For days, I had never seen her smile or laugh. My parents learned that she had no family or friends. Mrs. Smith, one of the old people told me that Mrs. Kurtz had turned eighty-nine, and that she was upset to be celebrating another birthday all alone without any cards or gifts. She truly believed there was no one in the world who loved her.
This moved me deeply, and I started to create a plan in my mind. I ran home and raced to my room. I took out my piggy bank (储钱罐) that I always valued. I raced down the stairs and explained to my mother what I was about to do. And she smiled at me proudly. She planted a kiss on my cheek and said, “I must be the luckiest mother in the world to have such a caring daughter.”

I was backpacking and planned to climb a volcano called Volcan Baru. At 3,474m, it is the highest peak in the country and one of the only places on Earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time. It is an active volcano, but last erupted around 1550.
I set off before sunrise. It was a little cold, so I had pulled on tights under my trousers. I intended to reach the top by midday, and then return before dark to get a lift to my hotel.I’ve always felt safe travelling as a woman on my own, which I’ve done since my 20s. I love the freedom. When I got to the base of the volcano at 7 in the morning, the ranger disagreed to let me go alone, but said OK because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. It was not dry as you might imagine a volcano might be — there were trees and flowers all around, and a dirt road for the farmers who worked around there.I walked for an hour and reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph.
Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me. I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively (挑衅) towards me. I expected them to stop, but they didn’t. As they got closer, I could see their teeth looked sharp, and that they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. I’d never been bitten by a dog, and I couldn’t help but fear what would happen. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.

A wealthy couple was preparing to throw a big New Year’s party in their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain a high standard of living so they didn’t mind paying a lot for it. After purchasing everything they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it off at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
The couple asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, a price well below the market rate for delivering. Yet, they argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they had bargained with the poor porter. They paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, two hours passed, but the porter still hadn’t delivered their goods.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such a person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn to feed himself for one time in a day, and you handed him everything we purchased for our big party. I am sure instead of delivering our goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file a complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way, near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart!

Madison stared through the window and watched a bird fly across the sky. She thought, “How I wish I were a bird, with total freedom and no math class to sit in.” She sighed and wondered how warm it was outside. She thought of her horse, Star. She planned to brush him before riding him after school. Somewhere, someone was saying her name, but it seemed so faraway. The bird continued to float through the air.
“Madison, Madison! Hand in the math homework! “
Madison jumped. She turned back toward the class to find everyone laughing. It turned out that she was daydreaming again.
Madison searched her schoolbag, but found no homework. Mr. Smith was about to criticize her when Doctor Landon came in. He was a veterinarian (兽医) and would deliver a speech as part of the Career Exploration program.
Madison looked at the clock. One more hour and it would be time to go home.
She tried to focus as Doctor Landon talked about how important math and science were and how he struggled with them when he was a kid. She glanced out the window and tried to remember where she left her riding boots. Doctor Landon was still talking but she lost track of what he was saying. Then a word caught her attention. Horse. Was he talking about horses? She paid attention as he spoke.
“I love being a veterinarian because I love animals, especially horses and I enjoy freedom. Specializing on horses gave me the chance to be outside all day, moving from place to place in our community. Do any of you have horses?”
Madison raised her hand, “I do! I have a big Quarter Horse.”

It was an early winter morning. Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o’clock.Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all, she didn’t expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings,“Good morning, my Dear!”Recognizing the voice from her father, Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Joan’s father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard.Born in a not-rich family, Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students throughout the academic career and actively involved in school activities. They became the pride of the school and the envy of the students.
“Good morning, Dad, what’s up?”Joan said in an easy tone.“I have been very nice recently, my baby. Today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one and half an hour. Do remember to take the cake.”
Hearing her father’s words, Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum’s birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn’t been mopped(拖地) for a few days—There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement.“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Mike up.We will give Mum a surprise !”
Joan hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike’s room to share him her Big Cleaning plan. After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.

Scott Legried was a 50-year -old farmer in Frost, Minnesota. One October morning, he was driving his truck along the country road when a dog popped up out of nowhere. It was too late to hit the brake. Scott had no choice but to turn the wheel sharply to the right to avoid running over the dog.
The dog had a lucky narrow escape, but Scott’s car crashed into the roadside cornfield. He got knocked out and when he came to, he found he was unable to move or even reach for his cellphone lying not far away. Scott was desperate for help.
Fortunately, a motorist driving through the area found Scott and called 911. Scott was rushed to hospital. Without delay, the doctors gave Scott a thorough examination and found that he suffered multiple serious injuries and needed to be operated on immediately. After a 5-hour surgery, Scott was wheeled to his ward, where the doctors told Scott’s wife Susan that it would take several months for Scott to recover before he could do farm work again.
It was really bad news. This was the busiest time of year for the farmers of the region. What the doctors said meant Scott would not be able to bring in their October harvest of soybeans and com in time, which would probably be ruined in the fields. The crops were their hard work of so many days! They meant the world to the family. Besides, wheat should be sown after the soybeans and com were harvested. They couldn’t afford to miss the farm time, but they could do nothing at all since Susan also had to stay in the hospital to accompany and take care of Scot. Feeling extremely anxious and helpless, the couple could hardly fall asleep on the first night in the hospital.
The bad news that Scott had a serious accident spread quickly. The whole community were deeply concerned about him. Frank, director of the community, and some other farmers came to the hospital to see Scott the next day.

1.The postman went to houses to deliver mails during the New Year celebrations. When he thought about the little girl, he started thinking it wouldn’t be right to meet her empty-handed during the festival. After much thought he bought a small box of chocolates. The next day, he went to her house and knocked, waiting for a while as usual. When the girl opened the door, the old postman handed her chocolates and said, “Take this small gift from your uncle’s side.” She was happy to get that and asked the postman to wait for some time.
After a while, she brought a big box and handed it to the postman. She said, “Uncle, this is a gift from my side to you.” The postman was surprised to see the box which was decorated with red ribbon. After thinking for a minute, he said, “You are like a daughter to me. How can I accept a gift from you?” The girl demanded, “Please don’t refuse my gift.” The postman kept the box and lovingly put his hand on the girl’s head. After going home, when he opened the box, the postman found a pair of shoes in it.

As Mel made her way down, I called for help, and other climbers came to assist me. Mel stayed by my side while I tried not to cry from the pain.

Mrs. Steward walked around in the classroom, handing out the test papers. Sitting still, I could feel my heart beating faster and faster. So nervous was I that I even couldn’t make out what was printed on the paper. Mrs. Steward gave me an encouraging look as if saying, “Have faith in yourself! You can make it!” I recalled all those hours we spent after class dealing with my maths problems and the explanations Mrs. Steward offered. So I kept calm and focused all my attention on the questions. In fact, after a few weeks’ efforts, I found maths not as scary as it used to be. I finished the test five minutes before the time limit.
The next Monday, Mrs. Steward came in, with the honor roll in her hands. She stood in front of the class and began to read out the names on it. As my name was announced, I couldn’t believe it! “Congratulations, John! You did excellently in the maths test. You deserve it!” With tears welling up in my eyes, I felt astonished and overjoyed. Things became different after that. I showed an interest in maths and gradually became quite good at it. I am so grateful to Mrs. Steward, who has improved not only my maths but also my confidence.

How time flew! Bob was released from jail. Stepping out of jail into the cold wind, Bob, now 58, felt lost and helpless. After twenty years behind bars, he felt like a stranger to the city and everyone in it. Lost and helpless, he didn’t know where to go or whom to go to. A year after he had been arrested, his wife had left him and taken their daughter with her. Former good friends had cut all contact with him. “Is there anyone here who still thinks of me?” he wondered bitterly. Recalling the night twenty years earlier that had completely changed his life, he wandered blindly through the streets. In the dim light of a streetlamp, A voice came from behind, “Bob!”
He turned around and surprised to find a familiar-looking man. Although twenty years had passed, he could still recognize that face—Jimmy’s face. “I’m here for our meeting, though I don’t know if you still want it. Anyway, welcome home, buddy(伙计)!” “Long time no see,” murmured Bob, his voice trembling. The uncertainty was gone. He now had a home.

The fact is that I had no time to look after myself when I had to work two jobs to pay for your education. I’ m sorry for not being perfect.”

Just as I was about to slide down, I saw some lollipops on the higher branches. Maybe I could reach them, too. And slowly, branch by branch, I climbed up the tree. When I was at the top, holding my lollipops and reaching out my hand to touch the highest branch of the tree, I looked down and saw Grandpa smiling up at me. “You made it,” he said. “Now get down here so that we can enjoy the candy.” “That was fun!”I said.
I climbed down and burst into the kitchen, hands tightly holding my treasures. Seeing my Grandma, I shouted excitedly, “Look at what I just picked from the tree.” “That’s amazing, sweetie!” Grandma replied as she gave me a hug. “But why are there lollipops on the tree?” I asked Grandma. “Oh,” Grandma shook her head wisely, “Grandpa can grow everything. And he is expert at climbing.” And then she continued, “You know, sweetie, he can make anything grow——even lollipops on trees!”

Exhausted and helpless, I fell in a certain panic. “Try never to panic, it is hard to get things right when you are panicked,” dad’s words rang in my ear again and again. After trying out a thousand times, I finally got a firm foothold against two small little rocks and got my breath back slightly. Above the well, Angela kept the emergency services updated without a break.
With great relief, I heard sirens (汽笛) approaching. At last, faces appeared at the top of the well. A lifejacket was lowered down, followed by a rope, so I had something to hang on to. Terrified, I slowly kept walking, saying, “Come on, good dogs!” Suddenly, one dog dashed up towards me, sinking his teeth into my leg. “Oh, my God, I’m in a dog’s mouth and he’s trying to swallow me,” I thought to myself, with the pain taking my breath away as I felt his teeth in my flesh. I picked up a rock to fight him off, but was nervous that he would go for my neck or that the other one would come to attack me together. Facing these two aggressive dogs,I desperately felt at a loss. Hardly could I step out of the trouble on my own.
Just at this critical moment, a pickup appeared, driven by the ranger: Seeing the state I was in, he immediately stopped his pickup, opened the door, and signaled to me to get in. When we reached the base, he helped me bandage the leg up, earnestly reminding me that safety comes first while travelling. I felt relieved and grateful. And from then on, I travel carefully as well as cautiously. After all, nothing is more precious than life.

17.The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? This is our goods.” She was about to add more contemptuous comments on the old porter when she suddenly noticed that the man was glaring at her resentfully. “Madam, please calm down. Jack is not a thief!” retorted the porter, “He is actually terribly sick and isn’t able to earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Just now, on the way to deliver your goods, he was too weak to go any further in this heat of the noon. Despite falling down, he never forgot his promise and handed me$15, keeping telling me to deliver it as fast as possible.”
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife. “He was hungry, he was poor, but he was truly an honest man,” the husband admitted with a trembling voice. At that, the wife was struck dead with shame, heart beating painfully fast and banging against her ribs. How could she be angry with such a kind and responsible man? Like a child who made a mistake, she had no courage to look into her husband’s eyes. Through all these unexpected things, it eventually dawned on her that honesty has no class and she should respect everyone regardless of their financial and social status.

18.“Yes,” Madison answered, surprised he knew that. Doctor Landon smiled, “I have been to your house to take care of Star. Actually I am familiar with all the horses in our community.” Madison’s mouth fell open, being envious that he could spend his days with horses. “So, you just travel around and take care of horses all day long?” She asked to reconfirm what a veterinarian did. Doctor Landon nodded. At that moment, sitting in math class, Madison could see her future. She was going to be a veterinarian too, with total freedom and no office to sit in.
Having a dream planted in her heart, she changed her original plan after school. She was still going to ride Star, but first she was going to spend an hour studying math. Then tomorrow she would spend an hour studying science, because Doctor Landon said those were important subjects to study if anyone wanted to be a veterinarian. Madison made great progress in math and science since then, which surprised both Ms. Smith and her classmates. It was a big dream that made all the difference.

19.The Big Cleaning plan began. Joan collected the clothes from sofa and then put them in the water of a basin. After pouring in some washing liquids, she began to wash them by hand. Realizing the clothes were clean enough, Joan gently squeezed water out and hung them to dry. Meanwhile, Mike was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home! They had just finished the cleaning when the express boy came to the door.
With the cake placed on the table, Mum came in. “Happy birthday, Mum!”, they greeted in chorus. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes, she could hardly contain her excitement and hugged them tightly, “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said emotionally. Just then Joan took out her smartphone and took a happy video named Mum’s Birthday and sent it to Dad.

More than a dozen farmers showed up at his farm with heavy-duty equipment, like combines, trucks, and grain wagons. In a matter of four hours, they harvested over 240 acres – something that would’ve taken Scott an entire week by himself in good health.
Two months later, Scott recovered and returned home. Seeing the harvested crops piled in the storage, Scott beamed with great joy. What a blessing to have so many caring neighbors! Scott wanted to thank Frank and everyone associated with the labors of organizing the harvest. The next day, Scott’s wife prepared a delicious meal and invited all of them to their house. “It's pretty amazing. You know, these people are taking time out of their busy schedule, this is the busy time of the year for us farmers, ” said Scott. It’s amazing what the community can do when they come together for something good.
