Fou Ts'ong, a Chinese-born pianist known for his sensitive interpretations of Chopin, Debussy and Mozart.died on Monday at a hospital in London, where he had lived for many years. He was 86.
A lover of classical music from a young age, Mr. Fou began taking piano lessons when he was 7. Mr. Fou made his first stage appearance in 1952. The concert caught the attention of officials in Beijing, who selected him to compete and tour in Eastern Europe. Mr. Fou soon moved to Poland, where he studied at the Warsaw Conservatory(音乐学校)on a scholarship. To prepare for the fifth Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1955.he practiced so diligently that he hurt his fingers and was nearly cut from the first round of the competition.
Mr. Fou was one of the first Chinese pianists to achieve global prominence when he took the third place in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955. He also won a special prize for his performance of Chopin's mazurkas(马祖卜舞曲). Almost overnight, he became a national hero. To China, Mr. Fou's recognition in a well-known international competition was proof that the country could stand on its own artistically in the West. Chinese reporters flocked to interview Mr. Fou, while many others sought out his father, Fu Lei, for advice on child-rearing.
In 1981, a volume of letters written by his father, primarily to Mr. Fou, was published in China. Full of advice, encouragement, life teachings and strict paternal love, the book Fu Lei's Family, Letters became a best-seller in China. Besides influencing a generation of Chinese, Mr. Fu's words resonated(共鸣)long after his death with the person for whom they were intended.
"My father had a saying that 'First you must be a person, then an artist, and then a musician, and only then can you be a pianist.'" Mr. Fou once recalled in an interview. "Even now, I believe in this order-that it should be this way and that I am this way."

    2.【2023届河北省五个一名校联盟高三年级摸底】
Scientists today are concerned about the growing number of species in the world that may soon become extinct. The United Nations, along with many governments, are trying to save these endangered species. To help resolve this issue, scientists have been trying to learn why species become endangered.
In the United States, loss of habitats is the main reason for species becoming endangered. As populations grow and cities or towns expand, nature is destroyed and the ecosystem is affected. Even small changes in one part of an ecosystem can have a big impact on another part of it. For example, deforestation may result in a change in ground temperature, which may kill off a certain kind of plant in the forest. Animals that eat this plant may suddenly find that there is no available food so they starve to death.
Another possible cause of endangered or extinct species is climate change and rising sea levels. As the Earth gets warmer, this has profound effects on animal and plant life everywhere. For example, rising sea levels make coastal areas unfit for birds to live in. Warmer temperatures melt the ice where polar bears live, wrecking their habitat and making it harder for them to find food. The rising seas also make it harder for polar bears to swim from the cold waters to frozen packs of ice so many of them drown.
There are several ways that people are trying to help endangered species recover. Ecologists study different species and try to find out more information about them to try and help. In Finland, for example, scientists found that a a decrease in the number of bogs(沼泽) was responsible for the falling butterfly population. Once they understood this, they could manage the butterfly population and help it recover. Governments are also passing laws
to protect endangered animals. One example of this is an area near Hawaii with a seriously low fish population. The United States’ government has made it illegal for fishing boats to enter this area.
8.What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.Most endangered species are located in the United States.
B.Cities and towns in the United States are growing too fast.
C.Ecosystem changes can result in habitat loss and animal death.

We’ve all had a guilty pleasure or two. Maybe it was an awkward TV show that we enjoyed a little bit too much, maybe a song we listened to ironically until it became a bit too unironic. Perhaps a snack so disgusting it wound up coming back around to be delicious, or a movie so egregious that it ended up being a fantastic watch. Though we often wonder why we enjoy these things, we should really be asking ourselves why we feel guilty for enjoying them.
With the obvious exception of things that are harmful to people, our harsh judgment toward ourselves and others over what we enjoy does nothing but harm our individual expression and enjoyment.
It’s natural to want to appear “cool” to other people — whatever that may mean to you. With the cultural tendency and the means to share literally anything and everything you enjoy via social media, we perfectly curate (管理) the media we consume to match some sort of imagined ideal aesthetic (美学) — a trap that’s much too easy to fall into. Don’t fall into the trap!
My point is, the things that hold us back from openly enjoying our “guilty pleasures” often come from completely unfounded places. This is especially true that a teenage girl would rather be misunderstood than admit she likes pink. Frankly, what’s the point? Who are you proving yourself to, and why do you feel the need to? If you’re not harming anyone, and you are getting happiness from something, then why bother holding yourself back from it just to preserve some kind of curated image of who you’re supposed to be?
Life is hard enough as it is. If you’ve found something that eases the stress of life even just a little bit, hold onto it for dear life. Marathon the Twilight movies. Read a super tacky (俗气的) romance novel. Throw that guilt right out of the window with absolutely no regrets, and do whatever it is that makes you happy.
8.What does the underlined word “egregious” mean in the first paragraph?
    A.Moving. B.Unpopular. C.Thrilling. D.Unbearable.
9.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.Most people want to gain recognition from others.
B.Social media has a bad impact on self-recognition.
C.Culture tendency sets a standard for ideal aesthetic.
D.People enjoy curating the media that they consume.
10.What would hold us back from enjoying “guilty pleasure”?
A.The desire to lead a simple life. B.The intention to show off ourselves.
C.The need to admit that we like pink. D.The purpose to guard our ideal image.
11.Which of the following may the author agree with?
A.Find ways to overcome hard life.
B.Set ourselves free from fixed opinions.
C.Have an in-depth self-talk to find our souls.
D.Talk with people and make our own decisions.

British chip maker Walkers is being flooded with mail deliveries of its own packaging. An online petition (请愿) with more than 312,000 signatures so far urges signers to mail their empty chip plastic bags to Walkers as an act of protest against the bags’ non-recyclable design.
As petition organizer Geraint Ashcroft explained, the majority of chip packets, made from metallized plastic, are not recyclable and have been found fully undamaged up to 33 years after consumption. The UK alone consumes 6 billion bags of chips a year, and Walkers turns out 11 million bags daily. Ashcroft wrote, “At today’s consumption rate in 33 years’ time, there will be 200 billion packets either sent to landfill or polluting our oceans. Many will be eaten by animals fish or birds leading to a slow death.”
Mailing the bags to Walkers is a way to hold the company accountable for its packaging and to pressure it to come up with a better design. Because Walkers has what’s known as a’Freepost’ address, the Royal Mail postal service is obligated (有义务的) to deliver anything that is addressed correctly — even if it’s an empty chip bag. But it is controversial. Royal Mail isn’t happy about it,asking people to put their chip bags in an envelope to help with ease of delivery. Critics on Twitter question the logic of buying a product in order to protest against its producer and suggest that giving up chips altogether would improve one’s health as well as the environment.
Walkers issued a statement on Wednesday, saying it will make its packaging plastic-free by 2025.“We have received some returned packets and recognized the efforts being made to bring the issue of packaging waste to our attention. The returned packets will be used in our research as we work towards our commitment of improving the recyclability of our packaging.”
28.Why do people mail their empty chip bags to Walkers?
A.To make Walkers use them once more. B.To exchange them for some new chips.
C.To object to Walkers’ plastic packaging. D.To appeal to people for not using the bags.
29.What does the second paragraph mainly show?
A.The harm of chip bags. B.The organization of the petition.
C.The production of plastic bags. D.The opinion of Geraint Ashcroft.
30.What is the underlined word“accountable”in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A.Explainable. B.Responsible. C.Essential. D.Anxious.
31.How does Walkers react to the campaign?
    A.Doubtfully. B.Oppositely. C.Cautiously. D.Positively.

My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I tried incredibly hard to focus on the words that I spent hours putting down on paper. I tried to conquer my fear of speaking in public on numerous occasions throughout my life. During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting. Public speaking had been my nemesis for as long as I could remember.
Then in my mid-thirties, I decided to join the public speaking group Toastmasters. At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, but nothing seemed to work.
It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak out. Science has made this country a place where dreams come true— this is why we all need to protect science. In addition, as a science writer, I try to get readers to understand how science is related to their daily lives.
So I ended up on that frightening stage on that sunny Saturday in April—Earth Day. Despite the body shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I looked out into the crowd of like-minded science supporters and I felt comfort.
Reaching that milestone goal of getting through a speech truly changed me. At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures.

D.Frustration can be stepping stones to success.
    7.【云南师范大学附属中学2022-2023学年高考适应性月考卷(一)】
We all need to do our part to reduce the effects of climate change by reducing our carbon footprint, and the best way to do that isn’t by switching to LED lightbulbs, driving hybrid cars, or even recycling. It’s by changing our diets to include less meat and more plants. One way to do that is by swapping your beef, chicken, and poultry for plant-based meat.
There’s no question that so-called meatless meat wins when we take the health of our planet into consideration. Plant-based meat, like all foods, has some impact on the environment, but it doesn’t come close to having the sort of impact on the planet that meat does.
Studies have shown that it takes between 2,000 and 8,000 gallons of water to produce a single pound of beef; in contrast, it takes only about 300 gallons to produce one pound of tofu. Plus, livestock (牲畜) production contributes to more groundwater pollution.
And the Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems study found that plant-based meat’s greenhouse gas emissions were 34 percent lower than farmed fish, 43 percent lower than poultry, 63 percent lower than pig, 87 percent lower than beef from dairy cows, and 93 percent lower than beef from beef herds.
But plant-based meat isn’t perfect. All food production requires resources. According to Mark Hyman, MD, the author of Food Fix, most of the environmental concerns around fake meat have to do with industrial farming—particularly the use of ploughing, which destroys soil carbon.
Whether or not meals made with vegetarian meat are better for your body than animal products depends on the recipe. Think about it this way: A steamed chicken breast may be worse for the planet, but it’s better for your body than an Impossible Burger. But an Impossible Burger may be better than a thick piece of beef.
Dr. Hyman wants people to keep in mind that these plant-based meat alternatives are highly processed foods, which are something we should be staying away from, not increasing, in our diets. “Coca-Cola and Doritos are plant-based,” he says. “That doesn’t mean they’re healthy.”
32.What does the underlined word “swapping” in paragraph one probably mean?
    A.Curving. B.Wrapping. C.Exchanging. D.Referring.
33.What is the function of figures mentioned in paragraphs 3 and 4?
A.To show that developing the plant-based meat can protect environment.
B.To show that developing the plant-based meat can save water.
C.To show that developing the plant-based meat never releases greenhouse gas.
D.To show that developing the plant-based meat can waste energy.
34.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Plant-based meat is healthy for our body.
    B.Plant-based meat is more eco-friendly.
C.livestock production does no harm to groundwater.
D.Highly processed foods are good choices.
35.According to the passage, what is the author’s attitude toward plant-based meat?
    A.Negative. B.Positive. C.Objective. D.Subjective.
    8.【江苏省苏州实验中学2021-2022学年高三3月份学情调研】
It’s no secret that college is expensive. I received financial aid, and I was able to cover the cost of enrollment, books, supplies, course materials, and additional school-related fees. But I could not afford housing, transportation, food, healthcare, or other basic necessities. The longer each semester went on, the harder the choices became.
When spring semester ended that first year at college, I had good grades, but I did not have two quarters to my name. I decided that if I could afford to be a full-time student, I would need to work a full-time job. Soon, I started working at the airport as a cleaner of aircraft cabins. My first shift at the airport was a graveyard shift, where I detailed aircraft of varying sizes. During this total night shift, I have to do “deep cleaning”, which meant cleaning everything and even I had to check every safety compartment and replace any missing items. This could be disgusting work.
Another fact upset me a lot that working at the airport and going to school did not fit easily together. Some days 1 was too exhausted after a night shift to get to class. Other days I didn’t have time to complete school assignments owing to a busy workday. At the end of the fall semester, I received a final warning for my attendance at my job. Once again, I was between a rock and a hard place and had to make a decision. I wanted to go to school and excel, but I also had grown accustomed to financially supporting myself.
Ultimately, I chose to temporarily stop going to school and to continue working, a decision. I would later regret. The airline closed for various reasons. I felt stupid. I had put a lot into this job, even sacrificing my education, and now I would have neither job nor education. I’d finally learned what my grandmother meant when she once said that your job is temporary, and your education is forever.
1.What can we infer about the author from paragraph 1?
A.He met with a long boring semester. B.Food accounted for his biggest expense.
C.He left himself financially embarrassed. D.His financial aid could cover his necessities.

    A.Cleaned. B.Listed. C.Repaired. D.Replaced.
3.Which of the following best describes the author in paragraph 3?
    A.Confused. B.Critical. C.Decisive. D.Diligent.
4.What is conveyed in the text?
A.He who makes no mistakes makes nothing.
B.Nothing is difficult to the man who will try.
C.One should be financially supported by himself.
D.The significance of schooling should be recognized.

Even light activity such as housework might help to keep the brain young, researchers say, adding to a growing body of evidence that, when it comes to exercise, every little helps.
Writing in the journal Jama Network Open, the international team of researchers report how they came to their findings by studying at least three days of activity-tracker data from 2,354 middle-aged adults from the US, together with the participants' brain scans.
From the latter, the researchers worked out individuals' brain volume, a measure linked to ageing: about 0.2% of the volume of the brain is lost every year after the age of 60. Loss or shrinkage (萎缩) of brain tissue is linked to dementia (痴呆), Spartano noted.
After taking into account factors including sex, smoking status and age, the team found that every extra hour of light physical activity per day was linked to 0.22% greater brain volume, equal to just over a year's less brain ageing. What's more, those who took at least 10,000 steps a day had a 0.35% greater brain volume than those who took, on average, fewer than 5,000 steps a day—equivalent to 1.75 years' less brain ageing.
However, the study has limitations. It used mainly white participants, and cannot prove cause and effect. The authors add that not all time spent sedentary is necessarily "bad" for the brain—particularly if people are engaged in a task that takes a lot of thinking.
Dr James Pickett, head of research at Alzheimer's Society, said, "Don't worry if you're not hill-running, but
find something you enjoy and do it regularly, because we know that what's good for the heart is good for the head."
1.What can be inferred from the statistics in Paragraphs 3&4?
A.Loss of brain tissue is linked to disease.
B.Light physical activity raises the brain volume.
C.Taking 10000 steps per day is best for our brain.
D.Light physical activity slows down the brain ageing.
2.What does the underlined word “sedentary” mean in Paragraph 5?
    A.Sitting. B.Walking. C.Sleeping. D.Working.
3.What’s the author’s attitude towards the study?
    A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.
4.Which of the following statement will Dr. Pickett possibly agree with?
    A.Regular exercise makes you happy.
    B.The more exercise, the better.
C.Doing what you like regularly is beneficial.
D.Light physical activities are the best.

Starch(淀粉)is the main component of flour, rice and corn among others, while carbon dioxide makes up the vast majority of greenhouse gases. One day, humans may be able to “eat” carbon dioxide, and global warming could be “eaten away” by carbon lovers. Although it sounds wild, the day is coming.
Chinese scientists have created starch using carbon dioxide, hydrogen and electricity, according to a study published in Science in September, 2021.
“Plants create starch through photosynthesis(光合作用), which is a complex and inefficient (效率低得)process,” Ma Yanhe, the director of the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily. He added that it would take a plant about 60 steps to turn carbon dioxide, water and sunlight into starch.
“Our breakthrough shows that making starch is achievable in a lab. This method makes it possible to produce food in factories and there are many industries that can benefit from this technology,” Ma told China Daily.
The team has been working on the process for 6 years. “The first step of the method is to convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen into methanol(甲醇), which is a molecule(分子)that contains a single carbon atom,” Cai Tao,
one of the first authors of the study, told China Daily.
Scientists then piece these single-carbon molecules into bigger and more complex molecules. With the help of supercomputing, Chinese scientists have simplified the natural starch-making process from about 60 steps into 11.
“The new process has made it possible to turn starch production from traditional agricultural fanning to industrial production. And it may be possible to satisfy our needs without farming in the future. This will not only help save water, fertilizer and land but also help recycle carbon dioxide to deal with climate change,” a research fellow with the Chinese Academy of Sciences told the Global Times.
The study can also benefit space exploration in the future. The starch may provide a secure food source for astronauts as they travel long distances in space by simply turning the carbon dioxide they breathe out into food.
1.What does Ma Yanhe think of the new method of creating starch?
    A.It’s extremely complex and inefficient.
    B.It’s achievable through photosynthesis.
C.It’s a way of dealing with global warming.
D.It’s more efficient than the natural method.
2.The underlined word “convert” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.

    11.【广西玉林市和贵港普通高中2021-2022学年高三上学期12月联合统考】
I’m not a tea person. I do keep a box of assorted (什锦) teas on hand for company and for being sociable. One day, feeling troubled, I pulled out the tea box.
Camomile (洋甘菊) is one of the teas that always get left over after people have picked out their favorites. I
gave the neglected camomile a sniff. It didn't really smell like anything. According to the box, it promotes relaxation. So does a cup of hot water, which is most similar to camomile tea. Over a cup of camomile tea, something happened.
I was transported to someplace very specific: my uncle Cliff’s farm. Uncle Cliff was one of the best land farmers in North Dakota. Scents (气味) help evoke memories. I found the cats hanging around the farm always showed up at milking time, waiting for Uncle Cliff to lose a drop of milk. But he never lost a drop.
At Grandma’s house, you could never be in trouble. You could do anything that interested you. Even if you rolled in the mud, everyone still thought you were good enough. Everyone laughed as often as they could. Even if they were laughing at you, it was OK. Grandma has soft wrinkly skin, and she loves you so much. She's right here, in the steam.
There will always be troubles in life, and I won't solve them all. But if I can bury my face in Grandma’s flowered apron, if I can be a 6-year-old girl again, just by drinking a cup of camomile tea, that’s what I'm going to do.
1.Why does the author keep a box of assorted teas on hand?
A.To get relaxed. B.To keep awake. C.To treat visitors. D.To enjoy the teas.
2.What can we learn about the author after she drank the camomile tea?
A.She dreamed a nice dream. B.She recalled her childhood.
C.She called on her grandma. D.She paid a visit to her uncle.
3.What does the underlined word "evoke" probably mean?
    A.Refresh. B.Release. C.Transport. D.Expand.
4.What message does the author convey in the text?
A.She introduces camomile tea to friends.
B.She loves the cats on uncle Cliff's farm.
C.She finds a way to solve troubles in life.
D.She misses her happy childhood badly.
    12.【四川省乐山市高中2022届第一次调查研究考试】
Human societies depend on healthy ecosystems (生态系统). People use their products in the shape of fish, meat, crops and fibers such as cotton and silk. Medicines may be directly harvested from the natural world or inspired by molecules (分子) and elements found within it. Through light reaction, trees and other plants take in
    carbon and pump out oxygen.
The services that ecosystems provide to humans depend, in turn, on there being a diversity of living things. More than 75% of global food-crop types, including coffee, cocoa and almonds, are pollinated (授粉) by animals. The complex web supporting every food chain and ecosystem means that the narrow range of species that humans eat and exploit cannot be sustained (维持) without the existence of a much greater diversity of animals, plants and bacteria.
When IPBES published its assessment of the state of global biodiversity in 2019, it offered a sobering picture. Roughly 1 million animal and plant species were considered to be at risk of extinction. These included many that are used in farming. At least 9% of the 6,200 sorts of house-trained mammals that humans eat, or use to produce food, had become extinct by 2016, and at least 1,000 more are threatened. And one-third of ocean fish stocks were being unsustainably exploited in 2015.
Surveys also show that the loss of biodiversity is the result of a combination of factors: climate change, pollution, human exploitation of land, sea, plants and animals, and the movement of some species into new territories where they destroy existing ecosystems.
Understanding a problem, however, is a necessary step towards solving it. And that is where technology can help. Ironically (讽刺地), it is humans’ use of technology, whether in simple forms such as chainsaws (链锯) or dragnets, or more complex ones such as modern agriculture and transportation, that is chiefly responsible for biodiversity loss. The challenge now is to arrange it so that it is not just part of the problem, but part of the solution.
1.What does paragraph 1 try to tell?
A.Great success achieved by human societies. B.People’s role in reconstructing the ecosystems.
C.People’s wisdom and experience in exploiting nature. D.Benefits brought by ecosystems to human societies.
2.In paragraph 2, the author tries to explain the relationship between________.
A.humans and ecosystems B.ecosystems and biodiversity
C.animals and food chain D.biodiversity and resources
3.What does the underlined word “sobering” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A.Saddening. B.Comprehensive. C.Concrete. D.Thorough.
4.Which of the following will the author probably agree?
A.We need to rid technology to promote biodiversity.
B.Loss of biodiversity is simply related to human activities.
C.Technology is double-edged when it comes to biodiversity.
D.Climate change poses greater risks than loss of biodiversity.

Cambridge Folk Festival has been running since 1965; it takes place in July and has a capacity of 14,000 people. The festival is committed to reducing the environmental impact of the event and has found that a strong relationship with their energy supplier, Pearce Hire, is key to reduction.
Cambridge Folk Festival has worked with Pearce Hire for over 30 years and they have come to understand the festival's environmental values. They work closely with the festival's Production Manager, to continually improve energy efficiency, introduce new innovations and to meet the criteria for a greener festival.
As Pearce Hire provides both power and lighting, they can invest in more efficient lighting, knowing that their investment will be subsidized by the resulting reduction in generator (发电机) size and fuel costs. They are also uniquely placed to identify where and when to turn on / off generators and therefore save fuel.
Over the years they have introduced a number of innovations in lighting: adding sensors, manufactured in-house, to switch site lighting on and off at dawn and dusk as required, resulting in huge savings in energy use and costs. They also replaced power-hungry lights with LED lighting site-wide, and supplied LED equipment for stage lighting.
Generators used on-site are one of the most energy-efficient generators you can get and they are arranged in an efficient system of many smaller generators rather than two big sets. The festival saves 12,000-15,000 liters of diesel (柴油) per event and makes a massive saving on the carbon footprint. Meter readings are taken every three hours during the festival so that the carbon footprint can be accurately calculated and the festival's major impacts identified and improvements made where necessary.
The festival encourages all staff and food sellers to “switch off” when possible; visitors are asked to reuse plastic cups to reduce litter and waste; backstage, water coolers are used instead of plastic bottles. The festival commission goes to great lengths to protect local waterways, land and the biodiversity of the area from negative impacts of the event.
Over the last five years the festival has reduced its diesel usage by a third. These reductions have been achieved through the joint efforts of supplier and festival teams.
1.Why does the festival cooperate with Pearce Hire?
    A.To be eco-friendly. B.To try renewable energy.
C.To rebuild their relationship. D.To increase its impacts on visitors.
2.What does the underlined word “subsidized” in Para 3 probably mean?
    A.Put off. B.Added to. C.Paid back. D.Brought up.
3.What can meter readings be used to do?
A.Improve the lighting's effect. B.Record the carbon footprint.
C.Identify the type of litter and waste. D.Calculate the total hours of the festival.
4.What does the festival encourage festival-goers to do?
A.Switch off their personal equipment. B.Go backstage to have cool water.
C.Stay clear of the local waterways. D.Recycle stuff consciously

People representing over 100 countries met virtually in Kunming, China, last week to discuss how to protect Earth’s biodiversity (生物多样性). This CBD Meeting (also known as COP15) ran from October 11 to 15, 2021.
There are so many different species. Sadly, species are disappearing all the time. One recent study suggested that around a million species are in danger of extinction. Like the climate crisis, the world’s loss of biodiversity is caused mainly by humans, who don’t always cooperate. Climate change is playing a part. The biggest way humans are causing biodiversity loss is by taking over the homes that all kinds of plants and animals depend on and using them for things like farming, mining, or cutting down trees for wood. Hu-mans are also harming the oceans by fishing too much, and by severely polluting the seas with plastic, oil, and other chemicals.
In 1992, the world’s countries began signing an agreement called the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The meeting is being held in two parts. Last week's meeting discussed plans and goals for protecting biodiversity through the year 2030, which led to a plan called the “Kunming Declaration”. An in-person meeting will be held in Kunming next May to formally agree to the plan. One of its big goals announced in Kunming is to cut dangerous chemical pollution from farming. The plan also includes asking governments to cut up to $500 billion of their support for activities that hurt biodiversity, like some methods of farming, and producing fossil fuels.
CBD organizers hope the world’s countries are really ready to work on biodiversity problems this time. In 2010, over 100 countries agreed to a 20-Part Plan to protect biodiversity by 2020. But none of the plan’s 20 goals had been consummated by 2020. Solving the problem doesn’t depend on what countries say they’ll do. It depends on what they actually do.
5.What mainly leads to the world’s biodiversity loss?
A.The disappearance of wild areas. B.Worldwide climate change.
C.The serious ocean pollution. D.Lack of international cooperation.
6.What do we know about the “Kunming Declaration”?
A.It belongs to the 1992 CBD agreement. B.It’ll raise $ 500 billion to protect nature.
C.It advises stopping using chemicals. D.It’ll be approved officially in 2022.
7.What does the underlined word “consummated” in the last paragraph mean?
    A.Explained. B.Ignored.
    C.Reached. D.Refused.
    8.What’s the text mainly about?
A.The new trend of biodiversity. B.The Kunming CBD Meeting.
C.The challenges living things face. D.The different species on the Earth.

Over the phone, Jack's mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
    “Jack, did you hear me?"
“Oh, sorry, Mum. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack replied.
“You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life,' she said.
As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mum stopped by to see the old house next door one more time.
Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture. Jack stopped suddenly ...
“What's wrong, Jack?” his Mum asked.
“The box is gone," he said.
    “What box?" Mum asked.
"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever told me was the thing he valued most. Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said.
Returning home from work one day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. 'Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days,' the note read. Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack s hands shook as he read the note inside.
"Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life.'
Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he found these words engraved (雕刻): 'Jack, Thanks for your time!- Harold Belser.'
9.What did Mr. Belser do when Jack was a child?
A.He played the role of a father.
    B.He taught Jack school subjects.
    C.He sponsored Jack for education.
    D.He brought Jack longer memories.
10.Why was Jack deeply impressed with the gold box?
A.It belonged to Mr. Belser. B.It remained a mystery to him.
C.It was his childhood memory. D.It was worth a lot of money.
11.What does the underlined word “retrieved” in Paragraph 11 probably mean?
    A.Take over. B.Reach for. C.Pull out. D.Get back.
12.What can we learn from the story?
A.A gold pocket watch is the best gift.
    B.Good company deserves treasuring.
C.Loss of father influences a boy deeply.
D.Close neighbors should help each other.
