Welcome to Science on Sundays
Science on Sundays is a programme of free monthly science talks which always brings the latest discoveries in plant science, as well as research linked to the plant collection at the Botanic Garden, to the visitors in a 30-minute short period of time. The programme in April is about tulips(郁金香).
Introduction
Time:2:30 pm on Sundays
Title: In Search of Wild Tulips
Objects: adults and children aged 12+
Speaker:Brett Wilson at University of Cambridge
Background Information
The planted tulips are a common sight in spring gardens around the world, but have you ever considered where wild tulips grow? The wild ancestors of our much-loved gardening varieties can mostly be found in the mountains and valleys of Central Asia, far from the Nether-lands, where most tulips are grown and bred. At the Botanic Garden, we have a National Tulip Collection where we grow many wild species including plenty of species from Central Asia. Over the last four years, Brett Wilson has been using something learned from books and combining with fieldwork to understand the diversity of tulips, with a view of identifying which species are most at risk of extinction.
Come and listen to Brett speak about the research and the adventures that have occurred in our search to find and protect wild tulips in this remote corner of the world. These will be live face-to-face talks taking place in the Botanic Garden Classroom for those visitors with interest,
21.What do we know about Science on Sundays?
A.It focuses on plants.
B.It is a paid programme.
C.It appeals only to children.
D. It is a live broadcast on weekdays.
22.How does Brett Wilson understand tulips' diversity?
A.By making assumptions.
B.By picking and collecting tulips.
C.By growing tulips in greenhouses.
D.By combining theory and practice.
23.What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To ask visitors to plant more tulips.
B.To call on visitors to listen to the talks.
C.To push visitors to take more botany classes.
D.To advise visitors to take adventure in remote areas.

What does a PhD student do? I am a PhD girl student being responsible for the tear where undergraduate and master students work together. They work on different aspects of my project and other projects in the team. I offer them advice and sort out issues they have. 1 also assist them with computer-aided design (CAD), programming, and teach them how to use some equipment, like 3D printers. Being in charge of the research group while working or my PhD is also a learning process for me. There is so much support from my supervisors and senior students. There is usually someone to turn to for help!
I start my day at 5 am. I will read some papers and work on my project before heading to the lab in the hospital at 11:00. This summer, our team consists of 40 students, so the lab is usually occupied when I get there. I will attend some meetings, meet with students, and then program or work on CAD.
The best part of my research work is the flexibility in that it involves both software and hardware development. Whenever I get stuck on the programming part, I will move onto CAD for a break. It does not require me to be attached to my screen at all times, which can be quite refreshing.
My project about the development of a robotic system impresses me a lot. A huge mile-stone for me is designing and developing my first model of a robot. It is quite satisfying to make progress and be reminded of the great potential my research has for improving the current medical treatment.
I think I can progress even further if I have more confidence in myself and ask others for help when I need it most. In my opinion, it doesn't matter who you want to ask for help, be-cause they may know more about the topic than you do. So, expose yourself to people in the roles you wish to be in and make lots of connections!
24. What does the author think of being responsible for the research group?
A.Troublesome.
B.Beneficial.

A.Her pride in the research result.
B. The importance of teamwork in the research.
C.The difficulty of developing a robotic system.
D.Her confusion about designing a robot model.
27. What does the author want to tell us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Offer to help others.
B.Expose our abilities to others.
C.Turn to others for help when necessary.
D.Cooperate with other people as we wish.

Brown rice is a tough sale when offered next to white. Despite the fact that brown rice is healthier, people prefer white rice because they think it just tastes better, just like folks opt for white bread instead of whole wheat. White rice and brown rice begin as the same thing-they come from the same grain, after all. But white rice is different from brown rice in terms of processing.
When rice is first harvested, it is washed, and the outer covering is removed from the grains. At this point, what you're left with is brown rice. It still has several thin layers of bran(麸皮)coating the grain. To get white rice from that grain, it also has to be milled and polished down, removing the bran. That is why brown rice is a whole grain. It contains all parts of the grain, including the fibrous bran, the nutritious germ and endosperm(胚乳). White rice has had the bran, the germ, much of the fiber, vitamins and other nutrients removed.
One cup of cooked brown rice contains 4 g of fiber and 5 g of protein, while one cup of cooked white rice contains only 1 g of fiber and 4 g of protein. But fiber isn't the only benefit of brown rice, Studies have found that it can reduce the risk of diabetes.
One of the reasons white rice has soared in popularity is that it's easier to cook. Not only does it take less time because the fibrous bran has been removed, but it turns out with a soft, delicious result more often than not, What makes brown rice so hard to prepare is the fact that you have to cook it long enough to soften the bran, but not so long that the inner grain turns mushy. This is tricky, but it's not impossible. There are many foolproof methods you can use. One is to get a rice cooker, but if you're not up for another appliance on your kitchen counter, there are other options.
28.How does the author lead in the topic of the text?
A.By making a comparison.
C. By using imagination.
B.By quoting a proverb.
D.By listing data.
29.Which of the following is a difference between white rice and brown rice?
A.White rice is thicker.
C.Brown rice is less processed.
B.Brown rice has better taste.
D. White rice contains more vitamins.
30.What makes white rice easier to cook compared to brown rice?
A.Having no bran.
C.Having no endosperm.
B.Containing more fiber.
D.Containing more protein.
31. What is the author's attitude to eating brown rice?
A.Doubtful.
B.Supportive.
C.Tolerant.
D.Curious.

A new technique using drones(无人机)to count lions in the wild has been tested in Uganda. The drones were used by scientists from The University of Queensland, Australia, to get a more accurate idea of lion populations. At the moment, it is thought that there are between 20,000 and 30,000 wild lions left in Africa. However, the team's recent findings suggest that there are far fewer lions in the wild than experts previously thought.
Alexander Braczkowski, the lead researcher, spent a year monitoring and filming the big cats in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area. In this part of Africa, the lions have a habit of spending time lying around in trees. Using a drone, Braczkowski was able to get close to each one and take high-quality photos of its whisker(胡须)pattern. This was useful be-cause each lion's whisker pattern is unique. The team could then differentiate individual lions using the photos and be sure they were not counting individuals twice. Braczkowski says this is much more accurate than the current counting methods.
One common way to count lions in an area is to estimate the number in one small part of that area, according to how many lion tracks that researchers find. This number is then multi-plied to calculate an estimate for how many lions are in the larger area. However, Braczkowski says this is not as reliable as the new way because lions are not evenly spread out in the wild and the number of lions varies from area to area. Another is to go out at night and play the sound of a distressed prey animal, such as an antelope, through a loudspeaker. The lions are counted as they emerge to find out what the noise is. The trouble with this method is that re-searchers might count the same lions twice in the dark or miss some, because not all of them might appear.
Braczkowski says people should start using the drone method for counting. Knowing for certain how many lions are in the wild will allow conservationists to know where the big cats are and how to protect them best.
32.What does the research show?
A.The new technique remains to be tested.
B.The lions in Africa are more than thought.
C.The authenticity of lion populations is challenged.
D.The previous research findings are thoroughly right.
33.What does the underlined word “differentiate” in paragraph 2 mean?

B.The strengths of the new way.
C.The reliability of the common ways.

35.What is the best title for the text?
A. Testing wild lions' calculating ability

·Make daily to-do lists
38. Some people prefer to make their to-do lists first thing in the morning, while others like to do them each night to prepare for the day ahead. Either way, it will help you to keep on track and to manage your time and workload efficiently.
39
Writing down and organizing your thoughts can help you to track and achieve goals. They can take part in research experiments such as growing food in space. Later, they can bring the food back to the Earth. These are the same things as astronauts usually do. Guests can also share what they see and hear with others on the Earth. They can have a video chat using a high-speed Internet connection. But each guest will have to pay at least $ 9.5 million. That's really a large amount of money.

A meaningful charity sale activity
Last weekend, our school held a charity sale activity in the school gym. We donated varieties of items, such as books, earphones, computers, pens, and so on. Then we sold them for a sum of money. The money we raised would be donated to the poor mountainous villages.
The activity was a success and benefited us a lot. It could raise our charity awareness as well as develop the habit of helping people in need. What's more, it was also a rare opportunity to cultivate our organizational capabilities.
Personally, it was a meaningful activity, where I felt a strong sense of participation and team spirit at first hand. I'm looking forward to more activities like it.
