My husband and I always wanted to go to the Caribbean but didn’t know much about the islands or how we were going to afford it. By chance, a friend of ours in Australia mentioned “pet sitting” and that it is something you can do all over the world.
We quickly created an account on a pet sitting website and began searching for options. There were only a couple of sits available in that part of the world, but we tried our luck, sent a request, and to our surprise landed a three-month job in Grenada, so our year was going to be taken up with Caribbean pet sits.
Inspired by a Canadian couple, we decided to start our own travel blog. We began by writing about The Virgin Islands, highlighting the beautiful beaches. However, for every photo album of a beautiful beach, there were 10 photos of trash (垃圾). It was hard to ignore the plastic pollution issue, especially on such primitive and remote beaches. So, we began to share photos of the trash we saw and how much we could pick up on our daily dog walks.
The more we looked into plastic pollution, the more we realized the severity of the global plastic pollution. From that point, we used our platform to create awareness and highlight ways to say no to plastic and travel plastic-free. We changed our daily routines, our way of living, and even our diets to accommodate more organic foods and little to no plastic packaging.
It’s been over three years now and we continue to do what we can. This journey has led us to some amazing places, working with great brands and even organizing a country-wide beach clean-up campaign in Grenada.
Our aim now is to keep on going. We love connecting with like-minded people. It’s been amazing few years that was sparked by a conversation about pet sitting. Who would have guessed?
24.Why did the author do pet sitting?
A.To raise fund. B.To protect the environment.
C.To cover travel expenses. D.To shoot beautiful beaches.
25.What does the author intend to convey through her story?
A.Pet sitting is a new type of occupation.
B.The Caribbean is an ideal travel destination.
C.Travel blog is a superb way to gain popularity.
D.Action should be taken to fight plastic pollution.
26.How did the author find her experience in the Caribbean?
A.Significant. B.Challenging.
C.Adventurous. D.Dreadful.
27.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Changing Lifestyles by Pet Sitting
B.Unexpected Gains from Pet Sitting Travel
C.Dealing with Global Environment Pollution

For years, the conventional wisdom among Silicon Valley futurists was that artificial intelligence and automation indicated doom (厄运) for blue-collar workers whose jobs involved repetitive physical labor. Truck drivers, retail cashiers and warehouse workers would all lose their jobs to robots, they said, while workers in creative fields like art, entertainment and media would be safe. Well, an unexpected thing happened recently: AI entered the creative class.
In the past few months, AI-based image generators like DALL-E 2, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion have made it possible for anyone to create unique, hyper-realistic images just by typing a few words into a text box. These apps, though new, are already surprisingly popular.
It’s still too early to tell whether this new wave of apps will end up costing artists and illustrators their jobs. What seems clear, though, is that these tools are already being put to use in creative industries.
Sarah Drummond, a service designer in London, started using AI-generated images a few months ago to replace the black-and-white sketches she did for her job. These were usually basic drawings that visually represented processes she was trying to design improvements for.
Instead of spending hours creating what she called blob drawings manually, Ms. Drummond, 36, now types what she wants into DALL-E 2 or Midjourney. Ms. Drummond acknowledged that AI image generators had limitations. They aren’t good at more complex sketches, for example, or creating multiple images with the same character. And like the other creative professionals, she said she didn’t think AI designers would replace human illustrators completely.
“Would I use it for final output? No. I would hire someone to fully make what we wanted to realize,” she said. “But the throwaway work that you do when you’re any kind of designer, whether it’s visual, architectural, urban planner—you’re sketching, sketching sketching. And so this is a sketch tool.”
28.What’s the conventional wisdom about?
A.AI can learn to create unique images. B.Robots will be popular in all the fields
C.AI will take the place of physical labor. D.Apps will give birth to some problems.
29.What’s the character of DALL-E 2 or Midjourney according to Sara?
A.It gets drawing skills improved. B.It helps in some basic drawings
C.It makes sketches more diverse D.It is creative as well as humans.
30.What does the underlined word “manually” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.By machine. B.By imagination C.By technology. D.By hand.
31.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.AI-generated art is already transforming creative work.
B.The apps are getting artists losing their jobs at present being.
C.Science and technology completely change people’s life now.
D.Two useful drawing tools are designed for artists in their life.
D
A small device no bigger than a toaster has generated oxygen on the surface of Mars, bringing the chances of surviving on the red planet a step closer.
The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, better known as Moxie, has been generating oxygen from the atmosphere on Mars, as part of NASA’s Perseverance rover (漫游者)mission.
Moxie produced breathable oxygen in seven hour-long tests conducted in various weather and atmosphere conditions since landing. During each test, the device produced six grams of oxygen, about the same as a small tree and enough to sustain an astronaut for 15 minutes. It’s also found that even in extreme temperatures and after a Martian dust storm, Moxie continued to produce high-purity oxygen.
“This is the first demonstration of actually using resources on the surface of another planet and transforming them chemically into something that would be useful for a human mission,”said Jeff Hoffinan, a retired astronaut and professor at MIT.
NASA and the MIT team are planning to build a bigger version of Moxie, as they hope advanced models will produce enough oxygen to support a crewed mission to Mars. “We have to bring a lot of stuff from Earth to support a human mission, but oxygen is a big problem. If you can make it there, go for it and you’re way ahead of the game,” Hoffinan said.
The device uses pumps that absorb in carbon dioxide which is heated to 800 ℃ and processed to separate the carbon and oxygen. Carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)is emitted as waste while the pure oxygen is left behind.
Expanding the device to support a human mission to Mars presents challenges. It is needed to run continuously for 400 days, a leap from the one-hour tests and its inner temperature should be controlled stably. Moxie has proved to endure the extreme conditions on Mars, however, and the team plans to assess the machine’s limits in the coming months when atmosphere is thick and carbon dioxide levels are high. They say they just want to set everything as high as they dare and make as much oxygen as they can.
32.What can we learn about Moxie?
A.It works well in a series of tests.
B.It aims to purify breathable oxygen.
C.It is stopped by extreme conditions.
D.It produces oxygen enough for a team.
33.By quoting Hoffinan’s words in Paragraph 5, the author intends to_____.
A.present a plan to further explore Mars
B.demonstrate Nasa’s ambition to win the game
C.show the plentiful and useful resources on Mars
D.highlight the significance of making oxygen on Mars
34.Which of the following best describes the team according to the last paragraph?
A.Cautious and ambitious. B.Confident and intelligent.
C.Practical and independent. D.Courageous and imaginative.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Nasa Mars rover landed successfully.
B.Challenges for a human mission to Mars.
C.Human survives with oxygen made on Mars.
D.A little oxygen on Mars, a great leap forward.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait—and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother—we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order. More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong. Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels.
