Work is a part of living—my grandparents understood that. They lived and worked on a central Pennsylvania farm that has been in my family for 150 years. Hess Farm, at that time, was self-sufficient. They raised beef cattle for meat, chickens for eggs and hogs for pork and lard. Dairy cows were kept for milk and the cream from which Grandma made butter and cheese. That little yard they had become a garden.
The Depression, therefore, didn’t make a dramatic change in their lives. But it did bring an unending flow of men out of work, drifting from job to job, to the farm. The first man to show up on the kitchen porch was ragged-looking, but polite. He took off his hat and quietly explained that he hadn’t eaten for a while. Grandpa stood watching him a bit, then said, “There’s a pile of firewood stacked against the fence behind the barn (畜棚). I’ve been needing to get it moved to the other side of the fence. You have just about enough time to finish the job before lunch.” With that, he stuck out his rough hand to the stranger.
Grandma said a surprising thing happened. The drifter got a shine in his eyes and, behind his beard, he smiled. He hurried to the barn in a near trot (小跑). She set another place at the table and baked an apple pie. During lunch, the stranger didn’t say much, but his shoulders straightened when he left. “Nothing ruins a man like losing his self-respect”, Grandpa later told me.
Soon after, another man showed up asking for a meal. This one was dressed in a suit and carried a small, worn suitcase. Grandpa came out and then offered a handshake. “There’s a stack of firewood along the fence down behind the barn I’ve been meaning to get moved. It’d sure be a help to me. And we’d be pleased to have you stay for lunch.”
The fellow set his suitcase and neatly laid his coat and vest on top. Then he set off to work.
Grandma says she doesn’t remember how many strangers they shared a meal with during those Depression days—or how many times that pile of wood got moved.
    24. What is the result of the Depression?
    A. Many people were laid off.
    B. Some people earned a lot of money.
    C. A large number of people went abroad.
    D. Quite a few people died of a strange disease.
    25. Why did the first man get a shine in his eyes and smile when asked to move a stack of firewood?
    A. Because he had found a good job.
    B. Because he would have something to eat.
    C. Because he felt happy to get a meal through work.
    D. Because he would no longer suffer from the Depression.
    26. Why did grandpa ask those strangers to move the stack of firewood before meals?
    A. Because he was unwilling to share a meal with them free of charge.
    B. Because he really needed to get the stack of firewood moved.
    C. Because he wanted to help them get a meal without losing self-respect.
    D. Because he didn’t want to show them his kindness and sympathy.
    27. What is the best title of the story?
    A. No Pains No Gains B. Work—A Part of Living
    C. The Depression D. The Pleasure of farming
    C
A CHATBOT developed by tech company OpenAI can find and fix bugs in software just as well as standard machine learning approaches can and beats them when aided by follow-up questions. A number of tools exist that use artificial intelligence to check programming code to ensure there are no mistakes.
Dominik Sobania at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, and his colleagues sought to see how well ChatGPT could do this compared with other AI-powered coding support tools. They first asked ChatGPT to answer questions taken from the QuixBug benchmark(基准)dataset, which is a series of small but challenging programming problems. For example, they gave the AI a small snippet(代码段)of code and asked:“Does this program have a bug? How do you fix it?” ChatGPT managed to correctly answer 19 out of 40 questions put to it-comparable with two other deep learning-based code fixing approaches, called CoCoNuT and Codex. That roughly 50 percent success rate was considered state-of-the-art for such tools before ChatGPT.
The researchers then utilized ChatGPT’s conversational interface(界面)to ask follow-up questions that a user would pose if they tried to insert the corrected code into a programming tool. This approach highlighted where ChatGPT's solution was incorrect and meant that in 31 of the 40 questions, ChatGPT solved the issue. “That was really surprising, because we haven't seen it before,” says Sobania. “That's something new.” Sobania expects ChatGPT or similar systems to be adopted as an additional trouble shooting tool for programmers in the future.
This is a good idea, but human oversight is still needed, says Alan Woodward at the University of Surrey in the UK. “We don't want to rely totally on the AI as it is not errorless.”
    28. How did Dominik and his workmates carry out the test about how well ChatGPT works?
    A. By analyzing data. B. By making a comparison.
    C. By making a survey. D. By referring to another study.
    29. What does the underlined word “utilized” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Employed. B. Borrowed.
    C. Introduced. D. Developed.
    30. What can we know about ChatGPT according to the passage?
    A. ChatGPT's solution about the highlighted approach was correct.
    B. ChatGPT successfully answered 50 percent of the follow-up questions.
    C. ChatGPT's splendid performance made the researchers surprised.
    D. ChatGPT is a totally reliable tool for people around the world.
    31. Which word best describes Alan Woodward's attitude towards the application of AI?
    A. Approval. B. Indifferent. C. Subjective. D. Objective.
    D
A star athlete at the college where I work recently stopped by my office. After committing a few unforced errors during a weekend match, she was torn apart by self-criticism. “I can’t stop beating myself up,” she told me. “I’m at peak fitness, and I practice hard. How is this happening?”
Many students I teach, like this athlete, believe that all-nighters in the library and hours on the field should get them exactly where they need to go. When they fall short of what they imagine they should accomplish, they are crushed by self-blame.
We talk often about young adults struggling with failure because their parents have protected them from discomfort. But there is something else at play among the most privileged in particular: a false promise that they can achieve anything if they are willing to work for it.
Psychologists have sourced this phenomenon to a misapplication of “mind set” research, which has found that praising children for effort will increase academic performance. But a recent analysis found that while praising effort over ability may benefit high-risk or economically disadvantaged students, it does not necessarily help everyone.
The cruel, messy reality is that you can do everything in your power and still fail. Instead of allowing our kids to beat themselves up when things don’t go their way, we should all question a culture that has taught them that feeling anything less than overwhelmed means they’re lazy, and that where they go to college matters more than the kind of person they are. It’s suggested that parents and teachers spend time helping students find purpose, or goals they genuinely love to pursue and that make an impact on the world, which may help them gain greater life satisfaction and become more psychologically mature.
The point is not to give our kids a pass on working hard. But we would be wise to remind our kids that life has a way of sucker-punching us when we least expect it. It’s often the people who learn to say “stuff happens” who get up the fastest.
    32. Which sort of students does the star athlete belong to?
    A. Those lacking courage to make self-criticism.
    B. Those tired of working all night in the library.
    C. Those believing hard work surely pay off.
    D. Those overprotected by their parents in life.
    33. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
    A. Praising effort over ability will surely be beneficial to all kids.
    B. The result of the “mindset” research doesn’t apply to all cases.
    C. Parents should lay more emphasis on their kids’ academic performance.
    D. Whether praising kids’ effort over ability does good to kids depends.
    34. According to the author, how can parents help the kids overcome barriers in life?
    A. By choosing where to go to college for them.
    B. By pushing them to fight against the cruel reality.
    C. By discouraging them from making efforts to study hard.
    D. By encouraging them to stick to a worthy cause they truly love.
    35. What can be inferred from the passage?
    A. Students should not expect too much from their study.
    B. Students with positive attitudes can move on more easily.
    C. Students should bear all the failures on their own.
    D. Students are sure to succeed if they try their best.
    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Humans like exploring the world. Throughout history, we have gone to far-off places to see how people in other areas live. That urge hasn’t disappeared, despite increasing awareness of the carbon footprint associated with travel. Nor should it — there’re great benefits from seeing the broader world. 36 Consider the following tips to reduce your influence when traveling.
    37
Not only does it save money, but travelers will avoid lines and crowds. And the damage to the sites is less. The climate benefit is real, too. Traveling during this time means better options for direct flights, which are more fuel-efficient. Planes burn up to 25% of their fuel supply when taking off and climbing, so fewer stopovers (中途停留) mean less fuel used.
    Use public transport.
Instead of hiring a private vehicle, you can consider using public means of transport. Carrying lots of people, they cut down the carbon emissions that would otherwise be given out by many private vehicles. 38
    Pack a “Capsule Travel Bag”.
The heavier a plane is, the more fuel it requires to fly. Therefore, packing little is one simple way to reduce your impact. 39 FINNAIR, Finland’s biggest airline, has calculated that if each passenger were to cut down the weight of their luggage by 5 kilograms, the total reduction could save almost 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
    Bring your waste-free tools.
A zero-waste routine or creating as little waste as possible is also important when you’re away. Too often, though, people use travel as an excuse to let their waste-reduction efforts fail. 40 In order to reduce your impact on the environment, you need to carry reusable items. For instance, carry reusable shopping bags or reusable water bottles.
    A. Travel during the off-season.
    B. Explore the less well-known destinations.
    C. In case you’re doubtful, there’re related statistics to prove it.
    D. That is unfair to the locals of whatever place you are visiting.
    E. The pressure on the environment could then be reduced greatly.
    F. The popularity of traveling by air makes it hard to cut down the carbon footprint.
    G. Fortunately, some aspects of travel can be done in ways gentler to the planet.

    The Right Decisions
Lisa looked at her watch outside of the gift store and knew that in half an hour her mother would be standing on the doorsteps of their house waiting. She had to make up her mind or go home without a proper birthday gift.
“What should I do?”Lisa asked herself. “I owe Mr. Chapman five dollars for a science fair display board tomorrow.”That caused a serious, uncomfortable problem. If Lisa bought the tiny cactus (仙人掌) for her mother’s birthday, she would have money for the science board. If she bought the more expensive cut flowers, she wouldn’t.
Upon stepping into the gift store, the beautiful flowers immediately caught her eyes. Lisa knew her mother would adore the flowers, so without another thought, she grabbed them.
Mrs. Mills, the store manager, smiled at Lisa when she came to the counter to purchase the beautiful flowers.“Wow, I wonder who will be gifted those beautiful flowers, Lisa,” she asked with a smile.
“It’s for my mother’s birthday, Mrs. Mills,” Lisa replied, returning a smile. The price tag (价签) said the flowers cost $5.30, and Lisa gave Mrs. Mills a ten-dollar bill.
Upon stepping out of the store, Lisa looked down at the flowers in her left hand—the afternoon sun made them brighter in color. She was glad she had made the right decision. Then, her eyes looked down upon her right hand, where the change that Mrs. Mills gave to her lay. To her surprise, she saw a five-dollar bill inside. Mrs. Mills definitely had made a mistake and she had been given too much money!
Lisa was caught in a dilemma. A voice inside told her to keep the money, so she could have amazing flowers for her mother and five dollars for Mr. Chapman’s science board. But another voice told her it was dishonest to keep the extra money, and Mrs. Mills would be held responsible for the mistake.

They are all created by students mainly with unwanted materials in our daily life. I’m sure you will be amazed at the students’ creativity and imagination.
If you want to know more about it, you can visit our school website. I’m looking forward to meeting you at the exhibition.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

Lisa stood still for a few minutes and finally returned to the gift store and went inside. Upon entering the store, Mrs. Mills greeted Lisa with her usual smile. Lisa knew she had made the right decision. How could she be dishonest with such a nice lady? “Mrs. Mills, you gave me too much change,” Lisa said, laying the flowers on the counter. “The flowers cost $5.30, and I gave you a ten-dollar bill. You gave me $5.70 change. I also need to trade these flowers for a cactus because I have to give Mr. Chapman five dollars tomorrow.” Mrs. Mills took the flowers and checked something on her computer.
“I’m sorry, Lisa. I did make a mistake, but the mistake is with the price tag,” Mrs. Mills said. She explained to Lisa that the flowers were sold at a discount — one dollar cheaper. The price tag should have been changed yesterday. Knowing that she could keep the money and the flowers, Lisa could hardly contain her excitement and gave Mrs. Mills a bear hug. Mrs. Mills handed her the flowers and watched as the girl left her store. It was wonderful to solve a child’s problem, Mrs. Mills thought.

W: Mike, I heard you’re going to Charleroi. Are you visiting friends there?
M: No. You know, I’m really interested in photography. So I want to look at some great works of photography. I can do that at Charleroi Photography Museum.
    Text 2
W: Hi, John. Sarah told me that your daughter missed three days of school last week. Is everything OK?
M: Yes, everything is fine, Carol. Tammy was running a fever for a few days, so she stayed at home. But she’s almost OK now.
    Text 3
M: Mary, what do you like doing on the weekend? Shopping or watching movies?
W: Neither. I love reading books, so when I’ve time on the weekend I love looking for new books. Lucky for me, there’re many places to discover and buy new books.
    Text 4
W: Why didn’t you call me last night? I was waiting for you to call me and tell me the address of the party.
M: What? I sent you three or four messages.
    Text 5
W: What would you like to drink, sir? Juice or milk?
    M: Can I have a beer?
W: Sorry, sir, but we don’t provide beer on this plane.
M: Well, please give me a glass of fruit juice.
    Text 6
M: Do you know the surfer in the picture?
W: Yes. She is Bethany Hamilton. She was my neighbor when I lived in Hawaii.
M: What happened to her arm? Did she have a car accident?
W: No. In 2003 a shark bit off her left arm while she was practicing surfing. But she didn’t let the tragedy stop her from becoming a professional surfer. She decided she would get back on the surfboard. After only 26 days, she was surfing again. She now ranks among the top 50 female surfers in the world.
    M: She’s really awesome.
W: Yes. Her story has inspired many people not to give up.
    Text 7
W: I can’t believe tomorrow is the last day of our vacation. I know we’ve seen most of the local sights, but there’s still one more thing I’d like to do. Do you remember me telling you about that garden near here? They offer a tour of the grounds followed by a wine tasting, and all of their guides are wine experts.
M: That sounds like a lot of fun. Can we just buy tickets there in person, or do we need to call to book in advance?
W: Tickets are only sold through their website. But don’t worry. I already bought some.
M: That’s great. Then if everything is ready for tomorrow, let’s go out for dinner. I saw a nice cafe down the street.
    W: OK.
    Text 8
W: Good morning, Beautiful Smile Dentistry! How may I help you?
    M: Good morning, I’d like to schedule a check-up.
W: I’d be happy to do that for you. Have you been to Beautiful Smile before?
M: Yes, I have. My last check-up was six months ago.
W: Great! Can I get your name, please?
M: Of course. My name is Steve Cook.
W: Thank you, Mr. Cook. Which dentist did you see on your last check-up?
    M: I’m not sure, really. I’m a bit forgetful.
W: That’s OK. Let me check your chart. Oh, it’s Dr. Lee. He has time next Thursday morning. Is that OK?
M: Hmm, that’s not good. I’ve got to work. How about the next day?
W: OK. Would you like to suggest a time?
M: Does he have anything open in the afternoon?
W: Yes. We could fit you in at 2:30 in the afternoon.
    M: Great. That’ll work.
W: OK. Thank you for calling, Mr. Cook! We’ll see you next week.
    M: Thank you! Bye-bye!
    Text 9
W: Look at us! We’ve met for a chat here and we’re not even talking to each other. I really hate it.
    M: Sorry, I didn’t catch that. I was just sending a message.
W: But the real-life person should come first. Don’t you think?
M: Yeah, but sometimes you just need to send a quick message. I don’t think it’s rude. In fact, I think it’s rude to ignore messages, actually.
W: Yeah, I suppose so. But for me, the biggest disadvantage of having a mobile phone is that we can’t constantly pay attention to what’s happening in the real world! You’ve got your best friend sitting right in front of you. Maybe it’s time to switch off.
    M: All right.
W: We can make a bet — the one who uses the phone first needs to buy two cups of coffee.
M: Sure. It’ll give me something to post on my WeChat later.
W: You can take a photo of us and add it to your post.
M: Hey, don’t make me lose the bet.
W: You see. That doesn’t hurt too much.
M: I like this feeling of freedom. I’m going to keep my phone off all day.
    Text 10
M: As you are learning Chinese social problems now, I would like to share the result of a recent survey with you.
The researchers asked 20,000 young people in 20 countries, including China, the US and the UK, how they think and feel about the world. They found that 53 percent of those questioned in China think the world is becoming a better place. That’s the highest percentage among the countries in the survey, followed by India with 49 percent.
When asked why they felt hopeful for the future, 93 percent of those Chinese youth said it was because advances of technology like medicine, new energy and the Internet might make life in the future easier.
However, Chinese young people seem to worry about something else. As much as 82 percent of them worry about climate change. That’s a lot more than the number of people who care about the environmental problems in other countries. We can see that Chinese young people are quite different from their previous generations. I hope each of you can write a report on this problem after class.
