The Swimming Meet was three days away, and I was so ready for the backstroke race.
“Jamie Evans, breaststroke*.”
Oh no! How I wished Coach Cafferty had NOT say 1 name! I couldn't swim breaststroke! Laughter came from the seats which Callie and her friends sat on. I felt quite 2 .
After Coach finished the list of names, I rushed to her and cried out, “Breaststroke is my worst, and I'm always last in practice. I'll 3 our team's score.”
“Jamie, you're a strong swimmer. I think you can do 4 strokes.” Coach said, “I want you to push yourself outside of your comfort zone.”
“But... I will lose and be a 5 in front of everyone.” Patting my shoulder, Coach smiled, “Don't care about others. Just race 6 yourself.”
The next day, my practice was awful. I had to stop to catch my breath several times. Callie made fun of me. Coach silenced her and 7 me, “You did well. Just count your strokes.”
I nodded, 8 I wished there would be a miracle that the meet would be canceled.
The miracle didn't come; the meet did. I arrived at the pool hall and found all the seats were taken. The hall was 9 .
My knees shook as my event got closer.
“I don't think I can do this.” I turned to Coach 10 .
“You'll be fine,” She said, hugging me. “I will be right here 11 . Remember, just swim your race.”
Then my event started.
Pull. Breathe. Kick. I kept 12 my line in front, ignoring swimmers on either side. I made my turn. My legs burnt, and I wondered 13 I could finish this race. I knew I had to keep kicking and counting strokes.
Pull. Breathe. Kick. Just one length to go. I kicked, but felt like moving through cement*, I pushed myself forward. The wall came into sight. I touched it with the little 14 I had left.
I had finished last.
Coach handed me a towel. “You did it! I'm so proud of you!”
I bit my lip*. “Yeah. I guess I'm the 15 of my own race. I had given my best.”

If you are ever in Vietnam, don't miss Water Puppetry. Water Puppetry is exactly as it sounds—puppets dancing and moving on the water. It is a traditional Vietnamese art form enjoyed by people of all ages.
Vietnamese Water Puppetry originated* in the Red River Delta one thousand years ago. During the harvest*, farmers came together for singing and dancing with puppets in the rice fields filled with water. Slowly, Water Puppetry developed to be an art form. In the 12th century, the best puppet shows in the country were chosen to entertain the king and his guests. Today Water Puppetry becomes a symbol of Vietnamese culture.
Water Puppetry is performed in a pool of water about one meter deep, with the water surface* as a stage. When performing Water Puppetry, puppeteers stand in the water behind a bamboo screen throughout the show. They control the wooden puppets with long bamboo sticks and strings underwater. The puppets enter from either side of the stage or appear from the water. On the water, they move, dance, jump and so on.
A traditional Vietnamese band provides background music. Musicians sing the songs which tell the stories acted out by the puppets. The musicians and the puppets collaborate during the performance. The musicians may shout to warn a puppet in danger or to encourage a puppet in need. And the puppet makes movements accordingly. Different scenes are usually introduced by the comedic host called Tễu. He leads you through different stories humorously.
The water puppet show tells daily lives in the countryside of Vietnam. Stories about the harvest, fishing and festivals are highlighted. National history is also told through short performances.

Do you know how underground cultural relics* were discovered? Do you know how they were located? Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can solve your puzzles.
GPR uses radio waves to locate, identify objects under the ground and map various structures underground. It allows users to locate underground objects without digging or disturbing the ground. It's the best feature of GPR.
GPR mainly requires two antennas* and a computer and display. In order to complete mapping, GPR is pulled along the ground by hand or behind a truck. One antenna sends radio waves down into the ground. Then, the radio waves are reflected from different buried objects or earth materials. The other antenna receives the reflected waves. The computer deals with the data of the reflected waves, and stores it. The result is shown on the display in different colors. With the information, the user can infer the types of objects as well as their depths.
How deep can the waves reach beneath the ground? It depends on different conditions. The waves can reach the place a few meters to more than one hundred meters underground. Normally, the waves with low frequency* can go deeper into the ground than the high-frequency waves. The depth is also determined by the types of underground materials in the area. In areas with clay soils, like the lakesides, this depth is only up to a few meters. In areas of sandy soils, like dry highlands, this depth can be much deeper.
With its high accuracy, fast speed, low cost and easy operation, GPR is applied in various fields. For example, with the help of GPR on the Yutu-2 Rover*, Chinese scientists have made a big step in studying the soil and rock of the Moon. GPR provides scientists plenty of data to research the thickness, movements and structures of glaciers*. GPR also helps the police locate hidden evidence. Besides, GPR can be used to check the quality of city road, detect the underground power lines and so on.
The scientists are still working on improving antenna design, signal processing and imaging technology. GPR is believed to be effective in more fields with its development.
23. What's the huge advantage of GPR?
A. Helping find cultural relics. B. Not using maps.
C. Identifying underground objects. D. Not damaging the ground.
24. What can we learn about radio waves according to the passage?
A. High-frequency radio waves go deep.
B. Antennas send and receive radio waves.
C. Waves go deeper in lakesides than deserts.
D. The radio waves are stored in the computer.
25. GPR can be used to __________.
A. send the rover to the moon B. measure the location of glaciers
C. discover the evidence underground D. reduce traffic jams on the city roads
26. The best title for the passage is __________.
A. GPR Improves the Earth Quality B. GPR Matches Different Materials
C. GPR Meets Users' Different Needs D. GPR Reveals Underground Secrets

János Kend was a shoemaker, living in the city of Pest. He was left alone with nine children after his wife passed away.
On Christmas Eve, János delivered shoes to customers and walked home late. Seeing the colorful candies and toys in the stores and long lines outside the restaurants, Janos couldn't help thinking: Maybe I should buy something. For all nine? That would be a lot.
He decided to give his children a special gift.
“Come here, children!” János called when he got home. “Today is Christmas. No more work tonight! Let me teach you a nice song.” The children cheered loudly, almost turning the house upside down!
“Now sing with me.” János began to sing. The singing was nice and light, and the children were immediately attracted. That was a great pleasure when all sang together. On this sweet night, the beautiful song flew, again and again…
The singing annoyed the rich man who lived upstairs by himself, with nine rooms. At the moment, he was smoking, bored. When the Janos sang for the umpteenth* time, he couldn't stand and went down.
He would have been angry, but changed his mind when he saw so many lovely children. He asked János to give him one child and promised to make the child a rich man. János's eyes widened in surprise.
“My children could have a better life! Why refuse? Who can I choose?” He murmured*, “Ferencke: he has already helped me make shoes; Sándorka: this is a girl, he doesn't need a girl; Palika: he was born at the cost of his mother's life...”
Poor János, with trembling* lips, almost cried, “Well, you bastards! Who wants to live in a big house and eat good food, step forward.” The children all hid from the man behind their father. János hugged them tightly, kissed them one by one and cried, “No, sir! I can't do that!”
The rich man didn't insist, but gave them 1000 Pengos and ordered, “Take it, and, for this sacrifice*, stop singing.”
János stared at the huge amount of money which he had never seen. He fearfully took it and locked the money in his box with a mixed feeling. No one spoke and the room was in silence.
Then János started making shoes, humming the song without realising it. Weak voices seemed to answer. He looked up, seeing the children, with their bright eyes hopefully, also humming softly around him. Suddenly, he made up his mind. He opened the box and took out the money…
