I sat in the same seat every day on the school bus, just in front of Jessica. One day, she asked to see my lunch box, “Wow, Nicky. Your lunch is really cool.” she said. When I opened my box at noon, my lunch was gone. The empty box seemed to be laughing at me. I felt like a fool. I never cried. I never said a word. The next morning, as soon as I sat down on the school bus, someone touched me on the shoulder. It was Jessica. There was once a company in the United States which would offer a lot of money to anyone who could find a white marigold (金盏花). It is known that most marigolds are either golden or brown, so it is very hard to find a white one.

Day after day, year after year, through many seasons, her life changed. After her husband died, her children moved away, and many other things happened, but her love to grow white marigolds remained strong in her heart.

It was the last day for Ted in the company. On his way back home, he saw an old lady. Even in the weak light, Ted could see her in trouble. So he stopped his car and walked towards the old lady.
He said, “I am here to help you, Madam. By the way, my name is Ted.” Then he checked her carefully. Well, all she had was a flat tire(爆胎), but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Ted lay down and moved under the car changing the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.
Ted just smiled as he finished the work. The lady asked how much she paid him. Any amount (数量)would be all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that might happen if he had not stopped. Ted never thought about being paid. This was not a job for him. This was helping someone in need, and there were plenty of people who had given him a hand in the past.
He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could offer help too.

A new study shows that 86% of the world’s rivers have been damaged by human activity. The study was made by researchers from France, to find the situations of over 2,500 rivers around the world. They did not look at rivers in the Arctic and Antarctica or in wastelands. The scientists looked into changes to rivers over the past 200 years. They discovered that many kinds of things in over half of the rivers had been seriously influenced by humans. The researchers said there were many reasons for this influence. A big reason is the introduction of new kinds of fish into rivers. Other reasons include pollution, overfishing and farming.
The researchers say the worst-hit rivers are in western Europe and North America. This is because these areas have large and rich towns and cities. The lead researcher said: “Rivers along which there are highly developed countries, like the Mississippi River, are the most strongly influenced.” The River Thames in London was one of the worst-hit rivers in the study. The least - influenced rivers are in Africa and Australia. The researcher said: “This is probably because of fewer factories in Africa and a smaller population around the rivers in Australia.” He added that rivers in many rich nations were in worrying condition compared with 200 years ago.

①The mobile phone was a great invention. It enables people to communicate with others easily, meaning we could get in touch with people to and from almost anywhere in the world. But even if we can talk to one another as soon as we want, it seems many of us like to communicate by text better. A study in the UK a few years ago found 49% of young people would like to send a text instead of speaking to someone.
②Certainly sending an SMS, text or message through an app means we can think about what we want to say, and we can express more perfectly — especially if we communicate by using emojis (表情). It can also be quicker than having to talk with someone, although I feel you can still end up wasting time by having a full discussion by text! Text messaging can also protect your secret. It can stop other people from overhearing your text if you’re in a public place, such as on a train.
③But texting instead of talking can seem unsocial. We may even forget the art of humors. A text can be misunderstood too because you miss out on a speaker’s intonation (语调). Scientist Sophie Scott said: “We always speak with intonation to our voice. You take that information out of communication. You lose another way that sense is being expressed.”
④So every coin has two sides. It doesn’t matter which way you choose. Who can win your attention, the one texting you or the other talking to you? It’s up to who has a more interesting thing to say.
49. The writer thinks that many people like to communicate with others by ________ better.
A. dancing B. texting C. touching D. talking
50. What does the underlined word “It”refer to (指的是)?
A. Writing a letter B. Texting with emojis.

A. you send a wrong message B. they can’t understand short forms
C. you can’t use body languages D. they may miss out your intonation
52. What’s the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

A soccer player, Carson Pickett, was born without a left forearm. She didn’t have a role model when she was growing up. There was no one who looked like her to look up to, she said.
When she met 2-year-old Joseph Salvatore, she became the role model that she always wanted. Joseph was born without a left forearm as well, just like her. That has given Pickett and the little boy a special relationship.
“Truly within five minutes of meeting him, we had a connection,” Pickett said. That surprised her because Joseph was so young. “It was fantastic to me that it felt like he realized why we were connected,” she said.
Pickett met Joseph for the first time in April after a match. At that time, the player welcomed Joseph and showed him her arm. He raised his with a bright smile. Then, both of them were excited and felt like they were old friends.
Joseph’s mother, Colleen Salvatore, took the picture, which caught this happy and meaningful moment. She put it on the Internet and the photo quickly went hot.
Joseph’s parents have said that their son sees himself in this kind soccer player. Pickett said it went both ways. “I know I might be seen as his role model, but he’s also mine,” Pickett said. Joseph understands her “in a way other people can’t,” she said. “It’s just a gift and pictures mean a lot,” Pickett went on, “Hopefully when he gets older, he can see that and feel even more of what it means.”

Should Students Wear Uniforms?
Some schools have a rule saying that students must wear uniforms to class. Now, uniforms have become more common in public schools. Many schools say uniforms catch students’ attention in class. But some students think uniforms are uncomfortable. Should students wear uniforms?
Our magazine asked readers to weigh. They have different ideas and here, two of them share their ideas on it.
• YES!
Yuna Chong, 9, California
Uniforms are as much about safety as they are about a sense of group. Teachers don’t have to worry about losing sight of students at the playground or on a field trip. Also, when kids wear uniforms, they feel like they are part of the same group. I wear a uniform and feel like my school is one big team. I feel included.
Also, when everyone wears the same, you don’t have to worry about how you look. Parents can save money as well! And in the morning, I can save time because I don’t have to think too much about my clothing.
•No!
Sterling Heights, 12, Michigan
I don’t think kids should have to wear uniforms. If students are wearing the same thing, they can’t show themselves. Kids should feel like they can be their own person. They shouldn’t have to match. During school hours, we should also be comfortable.
If we feel uncomfortable in our uniforms, we can’t learn very well. For many, it can’t be more uncomfortable to be in a uniform all day. Next, parents have to go shopping and spend a lot of money on the uniforms that we never wear at home.
What is your idea about it? Do you wear uniforms when you go to school every day? Write to our students’ magazines and voice your ideas!
42. How do kids feel like when they wear school uniforms in Yuna’s opinion?
A. They have a sense of group. B. They are out of teachers’ sight.
C. Their school isn’t a big team. D. They are part of different groups.
43. Sterling thinks students don’t like school uniforms because ________.
A. they don’t learn at all B. they try to match with others
C. they don’t want to waste time D. they don’t wear uniforms at home
44. Who is the passage written for?
A. The teachers. B. The students. C. The parents. D. The visitors.

When a person is experiencing stress (压力), they can feel worried. Feeling stress is a common part of life. One way to ease stress is making art.
Maybe you already draw or paint for much fun. It is never too late to start. Anyone can make art if you can hold a brush or crayon, and then you can draw or paint.
Creating art has something to do with your body. When you draw or paint, your breathing slows. As you pay attention to your artwork, you will stop thinking about the stressful things of the day. Making art can even give you energy.
Making art is not just about relaxing yourself; it can also help you to clear your mind and make your spirit fresh. As the famous artist Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes the dust (灰尘) of everyday life from the mind.”
Art can help you understand your own feelings. Through drawing and painting, you can tell feelings or ideas, which are hard to put into words.
If you do not know how to begin, here are some ways to start making art. First, without thinking about it carefully, choose colors that you like and start painting with them. Try not to think about shapes. Instead, just enjoy the colors. Second, carry a notebook with you. Try to draw or paint in it a little bit each day. Drawing or painting what you see will help you to feel connected to the things-around you, such as your living environment and sights.

Your new sports shoes could look good enough to eat. It’s made by avocado(牛油果) on a piece of bread.
Some people are buying sports shoes that look like a piece of avocado bread.
The shoemaker, Saucony, has created this new kind of sports shoes. The sports shoes have brown lines around the bottom. It’s meant to look like a piece of bread. On top of the brown is a green part. The sports shoes also include the color of red, which is on the shoes’ opening to make them more like a real piece of avocado bread.
The sports shoes cost $130 and that is a lot more expensive than a piece of avocado bread. However, shoes fans are eating them up. By February 27, most were gone on Saucony’s website. Out of the 17 sizes, 11 were sold out. “Only 1,200 pairs were made,” said Saucony’s spokesman Jason Fanstino.
Besides, food companies have also made sports shoes too. In 2018, Pizza Hut created a new kind of sports shoes which could use Bluetooth to connect to the Internet. In this way, customers could order pizza easily.
Saucony probably won’t make much money from the new shoes. However, many people are noticing. As a result, the sports shoes and the company are drawing buyers’ attention and this is the most important thing.
Powell, a researcher, says Americans spend more money on sports shoes. U.S. sales were about $21.2 billion in 2018. That’s up from $19.6 billion in 2017. He said, “Eating tasty food can make you feel good and wearing sports shoes makes you feel good, too. It is great to put them together.”
49. According to the passage, what can we learn about the new sports shoes?
A. They look good and taste good. B. They have the color of green and red.
C. They have brown lines around the top. D. They are made of avocado bread.
50. What does the word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Pieces of bread. B. Shoemakers.
C. Saucony’s websites. D. Sports shoes.
51. Why has Saucony created the new kind of sports shoes?
A. To use Bluetooth. B. To draw buyers’ attention.
C. To sell avocados D. To make them look like nice food.
52. What can we infer(推断)from the last paragraph?
A. Americans spend more money on sports shoes.
B. Americans love eating the food like the new shoes.
C. The sports shoes were more expensive in 2018 than in 2017.
D. The new food-shaped shoes will be more popular in America.

Have you ever been stuck in a long, slow-moving lunch line? If so, you are not patient, or we say, you have felt impatient. You have this kind of feeling when things aren’t happening as quickly as you want them to.
Impatience is something you can learn to control, though. A few simple ways can help quiet your impatient feelings.
How to be patient in the moment?
☆Find out what is causing your impatience.
Try to find out what is causing this feeling. Ask yourself, “Why am I feeling this way?” Maybe you are in a situation that is not like what you planned. For example, maybe you are very hungry. You thought you could get lunch in the dining hall quickly, but there is a longer line than you expected. Now you have to wait.
☆Take a deep breath
Close your eyes and breathe in deeply Hold your breath for a second and let the air out slowly. You will feel your body calm down. Sometimes impatience makes us say or do things we feel badly about later. Deep breathing can make you stop for a moment.
How to learn patience for the future?
When you feel impatient, write about it. Be sure to include your thoughts and feelings, too. Later, read what you wrote and look for ways. You may notice that similar situations always make you feel impatient. The next time you are in this situation, you will be more prepared.
