W: That shows you really cared about your friend.
M: Yeah. But he responded by saying “What do you mean?”
W: I’m confused. Why did he say that?

W: Absolutely. But now I understand why he responded that way.

B. It causes air pollution.
C. It is useless for hard materials.
【答案】18. A 19. C 20. B
【解析】
【原文】For a long time, people have been burying their garbage. Unfortunately, there is less and less empty land that can be used as garbage places in our planet today, yet more and more garbage is being produced each year.
How should we manage our garbage? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two of the most important questions in the modern world, and many people are trying to find the answers. Some people think that we might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest that garbage should be used as an energy source. For example, some cities in the United States have been burning garbage to create fuel for years. But studies have shown that it is not a good idea. Burning garbage for energy causes many serious problems. Garbage that burns easily, such as plastics and paper, must be separated from metals, glass, and other materials that do not burn easily. This separation process is very costly, therefore not being done in most places. Another huge problem with burning garbage is air pollution.

Although the word workaholic usually has a negative meaning, it is sometimes used by people wishing to express their devotion to their career positively. The “work” in question is usually associated with a paying job, but it may also refer to independent pursuits such as sports. A workaholic in the negative sense is popularly characterized by a neglect of family and other social relations. Similarly, people considered to be workaholics tend to lose track of time.
Workaholism is an addiction, and it’s not the same as working hard. Experts say the continuous work-related activity masks anxiety, low self-esteem, and privacy problems. Workaholics feel the urge of being busy all the time, to the point that they often perform tasks that aren’t required or necessary for project completion. As a result, they tend to be inefficient workers, since they focus on being busy, instead of focusing on being productive. In addition, workaholics tend to be less effective than other workers because it’s difficult for them to work as part of a team, they have trouble entrusting co-workers, or they take on so much that they aren’t as organized as others. Workaholics are occupied with work all the time, which prevents them from maintaining healthy relationships, hobbies, or even take measures to protect their health.
As with addictions to alcohol, drugs or gambling, Workaholics’ harmful behavior will continue despite advice from loved ones or danger signs such as worsening relationships. Poor health is another warning sign. Because there’s less of social shame attached to workaholism than to other addictions, health symptoms can easily go unrecognized. In the US and Canada, workaholism remains what it’s always been: the so-called “respectable addiction” that’s dangerous as any other. Workaholism in Japan is considered a serious social problem leading to early death, often on the job, a phenomenon called karōshi(过劳死).
As with other psychological addictions, workaholics often cannot see that they have a problem. Reasoning the workaholic out of the problem will generally be met with denial. Co-workers, family members and friends may need to communicate the effects of the workaholic’s behavior to them. Indeed, mental treatment to cure a workaholic can successfully reduce the hours spent on the job, while increasing the person’s productivity. Studies show that fully recovered former workaholics can accomplish in 50 hours what they previously couldn’t do in 80.
24. Sometimes people use “workaholism” in a positive way just because_________.
A. workaholics work extra hours
B. workaholics pay little attention to their family members
C. workaholics seem to be buried in their work
D. workaholics work hard just to flatter their employers
25. In the writer’s opinion, ________.
A. workaholics take work as a solution to the settlement of the troubles in their life
B. workaholics aim at keeping themselves occupied instead of accomplishing their work
C. workaholics like to work in teams because they believe in their co-workers
D. workaholics enjoy lots of hobbies and are able to keep themselves healthy.
26. Which of the following is wrong according to the passage?
A. It is difficult for workaholics to overcome this addiction.
B. Workaholics even shorten their lives if they do not get rid of this addiction.
C. Workaholics’ poor health can easily be identified.
D. Treating workaholics mentally turns out to be successful in many cases.
27. What can be the best title for this passage?
A. Team--spirit B. Hard-working employees
C. Workaholism D. Success via work

Emotional Intelligence(EQ or EI) is a set of abilities or competences that enable us to understand and manage ourselves and our emotions effectively. EQ also helps us understand and effectively relate to others. Stress tolerance, leadership, communication, social responsibility, problem solving and creativity all require high EQ.
Here are some of the major emotional intelligence competences that make up a fully integrated personality as well as a sample of a state of the art assessment that measures EQ.
Emotional Expression--The ability to express your feelings and instincts. Emotional expression is a necessary part of your day.
Emotional Awareness of Others--The ability to hear, sense or intuit what other people may be feeling from their words, body language (not verbal) or other direct or indirect clues.
Flexibility--The ability to bounce back, be flexible, and retain curiosity and hope in the face of adversity, change or challenge.
Optimism--Being positive and optimistic.
EQ is recognized to be one of the most important predictors of personal, business and professional success. In a world of unprecedented change and challenge it is our ability to increase our EQ that will help us build the leadership, transparent communication and collaboration to lead better lives, do better business and contribute to a better world
IQ may get you the client, but your EQ skills will help you keep the client and build a growing practice. Why? Because, while human beings like to make their decisions in an intelligent way to purchase a product or a service, the bottom line remains that we buy services and products from those we trust and like. It is our ability to trust and like another person that makes us feel comfortable with the relationship and inspires the desire to have or to purchase something from them.
It is the human ability to put instincts, emotions and thoughts into the correct position in relation to each other that gives us the competence to increase our emotional intelligence. And it is the human ability to use the changes and challenges we face to develop self awareness and emotional management that helps us communicate better.
With appropriate education and training, Emotional Intelligence can be developed throughout lives. Like most human competences, Emotional Intelligence is best increased in the learning and doing, and that is why EQ focused coaching is so powerful.
28. According to the passage, EQ refers to the abilities to perceive, adjust and control our ________.
A. feelings B. angers
C. joys D. sadness
29. Which of the following is not included in competences of EQ?

B. You are willing and able to change according to different circumstances.
C. You expect good things to happen in the future.
D. You make it a routine to express your emotions in a negative way.
30. In the writer’s eyes,________.
A. EQ can help to know well that you can succeed in what you do
B. it is a bit difficult for people with high EQ to sell their products or services
C. our competence to make EQ higher comes from the human ability to handle emotions
D. you can keep improving your EQ through sports and games

Cheating is considered to be a major problem in colleges and universities. Colleges and universities across the US have decided to do more than talk about the rise in student cheating.
We frequently hear about “the good old days”, when Americans were better, happier, and more honest. But were they more honest? Maybe yes, a long time ago when life was very different from what it is today.
School children used to know the story of how Abraham Lincoln walked five miles to return a penny he’d overcharged a customer. It’s the kind of story we think of as myth. But in the case of Lincoln, the story is true — unlike the story of George Washington and the cherry tree. Washington’s first biographer invented the tale of little George saying to his father, “I cannot tell a lie. I did it with my ax.” What is important in both stories, however, is that honesty was seen as an important part of the American character.
And these are just two stories out of many. Students in the last century usually didn’t read “fan” stories. They read stories that taught moral values. Such stories pointed out quite clearly that children who lied, cheated, or stole came to bad ends.
Parents may have further reinforced those values. It’s difficult to know. We do know that children didn’t hear their parents talk of cheating the government on income taxes — there weren’t any. The vast majority of Americans still believe that honesty is an important part of the American character. For that reason, there are numerous watch-dog committees at all levels of society.
Although signs of dishonesty in school, business, and government seem much more numerous in recent years than in the past, could it be that we are getting better at revealing such dishonesty? There is some evidence that dishonesty may ebb and flow (起伏). When times are hard, incidents of theft and cheating usually go up. And when times get better such incidents tend to go down.
Cheating in school also tends to ebb and flow. But it doesn’t seem linked to the economy. Many educators feel that as students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities, they are less likely to cheat. Surprisingly, some efforts to prevent cheating may actually encourage cheating — a person may feel “they don’t trust me anyway,” and be tempted to “beat the system.” Distrust can be contagious (传染的). But, so can trust!
32. Why does the author mention the two stories of Lincoln and Washington?
A. To show Lincoln is more admired than Washington.
B. To introduce the topic to be discussed.
C. To compare them with the presidents today.
D. To prove honesty used to be very important in American character.
33. What lesson do all the stories try to convey?
A. Those who do something evil will have to answer for it.
B. Those who steal will be put to prison.
C. Those who cheat will be sentenced.
D. Those who don’t behave themselves will die young.
34. What may be a main reason for dishonesty in society?
A. Family life. B. Fun stories.
C. Economic condition. D. School education.
35. The underlined sentence ‘some efforts to prevent cheating …..’ means________.
A. Distrust will result in dishonesty sometimes.
B. The measures to stop cheating in schools are badly taken.
C. Dishonesty is a long-time discouragement.
D. There will never be an effective way to stop cheating.
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. A

【35题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“a person may feel “they don’t trust me anyway,” and be tempted to “beat the system.” Distrust can be contagious (传染的)(一个人可能会觉得“他们无论如何都不信任我”,然后被诱惑去“打败体制”。不信任可以传染)”以及“Surprisingly, some efforts to prevent cheating may actually encourage cheating(令人惊讶的是,一些防止作弊的努力实际上可能会鼓励作弊)”可知,有时不信任也会导致不诚实。即划线句子意为“令人惊讶的是,不信任有时会导致不诚实”。故选A。

When something goes wrong, we naturally start looking for a person to blame — and that person is often ourselves. But feeling guilty won't help the situation. Remember that the world is complex, and often a whole series of events caused what went wrong. ___36___ Accept that bad things happen, no matter how hard you try and it isn't your responsibility to fix every problem in society.
Get to the root (根源) of your guilt. Do some soul-searching and figure out why you’re feeling guilty. If you feel like you should be volunteering at your kids* school more, ask yourself why you haven’t. Then you’ll know what’s best for you to do.___37___
See your mistakes from someone else's point of angle. Pretend that your friend is facing a similar issue—would you want that person to suffer long from those feelings? ___38___So give yourself the same tolerance that you'd give anyone else.
Ignore the guilt trip.___39___So if a parent, partner or boss is making you feel awful, start by taking control of your own reaction. Apologize sincerely and do something to make up if necessary, but don’t let someone else determine how your mistake should make you feel. You’re the only one in charge of your feelings.
___40___You might not be talented in every area, but you do have talents to offer. Maybe you don't always make healthy homemade meals, but you have never missed your kids’ soccer games. Even if you aren't the type to make big romantic gestures, your partner probably knows you will always listen and say the right thing when something happens.
A. Know your gifts make up for your failures.
B. Don't bear all the blame for the outcomes.
C. The only person you can control is yourself.
D. Learn more skills to polish up for your lack of talents.

Two more words to go. Q-u-i-c-k-+-y. H-o-n-e-s-try. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly! She erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
“I’ll correct these while you’re at the break,” Ms. Smith said.
After the break Karie moved restlessly in her seat, tapping her pencil.
Ms. Smith walked to the front of the room and cleared her throats. Then, as if she were an Olympic gymnast(体操运动员), Ms. Smith threw both her feet into the air. “Congratulations, Karie! You did it,” she announced while upside down. The whole class erupted! Ms. Smith presented Karie with her prize. Karie smiled broadly as she read the note on the dictionary to Kaire, for her perfect performance.
“Everything OK?” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school. “Everything’s PERFECT!” Karie shouted, showing Mom her spelling test and prize. Mom hugged her “Put the test on the fridge so Dad can see it when he gets home.”
“And Casper, too.“ Karie lifted up her cat. ”Can you spell quickly. Casper? And honestly, and..” Karie’s stomach tumbled(翻滚) to the floor. Honestly? H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
“Karie, what’s the matter?” asked Mom. “I don’t feel so good,”Karie said, putting Casper down and squeezing the test paper into her backpack.

She soon understood what she should do.
Paragraph 2:
Ms. Smith was unlocking the classroom door when Karie got to school the next morning. “You’re an early bird,” Ms. Smith smiled at her. Hands slightly trembling, Karie gave Ms. Smith her test paper as well as the dictionary. Karie confessed her spelling mistake in the test, a pink flush spreading over her cheeks. “I see.” Even though Ms. Smith tried to contain her emotions, surprise registered on her face. For a moment, Ms. Smith stood quietly reading the note on the dictionary. Then she picked up a pen, crossed out the word “perfect” and wrote “honest” instead before handing the prize back to Karie. “I get to keep this? Honestly?” Karie’s jaw dropped. “For ‘honestly’, no.” Ms. Smith grinned. “But for honesty, yes.”
