(2022春·福建厦门·八年级厦门市湖里中学校考期中)Now in China many restaurants are known for their pets instead of food. They are pet-themed (宠物主题的) restaurants. In the restaurants, cats, dogs, ducks, rabbits or other animals walk in the dining area, and people can play with them while eating or having drinks. With so many pet lovers today, it isn’t surprising that such restaurants are now everywhere in Chinese cities. However, few people think about whether it is safe to enjoy their food in such an environment.
In most of the pet-themed restaurants, many cats or dogs are allowed to walk freely in their living areas and even in the dining space. Even worse, animal hairs are everywhere, and had smell fills the restaurants. In one of the dog themed restaurants, the dogs fight, jump onto the dining table or even poop in the dining area.
In October, there was a hearing about the business pattern of the pet-themed restaurants and their food safety in Guangzhou. Some people at the meeting talked about their concerns. They thought the animals in the pet-themed restaurants might carry parasites (寄生虫) and spread diseases, which were harmful (有害的) to people. Besides, although the animals are kept by the restaurants as pets, they may attack (攻击)people.
As more pets are entering Chinese families, they have become an important part of people’s daily lives. The growing pet-themed restaurants have made people’s lives interesting and colorful. However, without rules and regulations, the restaurants can’t be good choices for people.

5.What’s the best title for the passage?

(2022春·福建厦门·八年级厦门市湖里中学校考期中)If you’re walking down a city street and Dino Serrao asks you to take a photo of you, say yes.
Dino is a photographer(摄影师). He comes from Italy and now lives in Norway. He travels around the world to take photos of common people on the street and show them how beautiful they are. He believes beauty is in everybody, everywhere and that his work shows the beauty to others.
Dino points his camera(照相机)at common people on the street. These people are often walking or doing something else. Dino just stops them and asks to take their photos. As he uses a camera to take photos, he has another person following him to film the process(过程).
Often, the stories behind the photos are also beautiful. Once, Dino met an old woman in Italy. He walked to her and asked to take some photos of her, but she refused because she said she was “too old”. When he told her he would delete all of the photos if she didn’t like them, she finally said yes. In the end, even the old woman herself was surprised to see how lovely she was!
Dino’s photos show us that things like age and jobs don’t mean a thing when it comes to beauty. True beauty comes from people’s inner world(内心世界)and Dino has a way to share that with the world.

Multi-meaning words have the same pronunciation (发音) with different meanings. For example, let’s look at the word “ball”. You could have a “ball” which means you would have a good time. You could toss a “ball” which means you throw an object (物品) . You could be on the “ball” which means you know what is happening. You could go to a “ball” which means a dance.
____________. Take the word “can”. You “can” ride a bike which means you are able to ride a bike. You have a “can” of soup which means the soup is in a round-shaped holder. (2022春·福建厦门·八年级厦门五缘实验学校校考期中)You’ll never guess what happened to me and Jim when we were in Australia. It was unbelievable. We decided to go camping in the Outback for a few days. The Outback is a big, hot and wild desert (沙漠) area in Australia. Almost nobody lives there at all.
Well, we went right into the desert on our first day. Just Jim and me and an old jeep. We had enough water for a couple of weeks and plenty of reserves (储备) of foods. We were excited because we knew we had to be really independent out there: it takes hours for medical help to arrive if you get hurt.
We put up our tent under a few trees next to a dried-up river and after cooking a meal we sat talking for a while. We listened to birds singing in the distance. It got dark really fast, and so soon afterwards we went to bed. A few hours later we woke up to hear a terrible loud sound. An animal was running around our tent. It sounded big, aggressive and dangerous! I was so scared! And Jim was even worse than me: he just kept saying, “I want to go home!” and started crying! The animal started trying to get into our tent, and I took our torch (手电筒) and gave it a big bang when its nose came through the entrance. Thankfully, it went away. We packed up our things and got into the car: we slept there for a few uncomfortable hours and left as soon as it was light. We both forgot some clothes we had put on the trees to dry but we didn’t care. When we got back to the civilization and our friends, we were so pleased. But we never told anyone there exactly what happened. It’s only now I’m back in the UK that I can talk about it.

To many students, joining social media “circles”(社交圈) is now more important than making new friends in real life. And it’s easy. If you have a mobile phone, you can download many Apps such as Weibo, QQ and WeChat.
“I love to check my friends’ updates(更新). I also enjoy news and jokes shared on social media,” said Wang Wei, a 14-year-old student. While enjoying these, Wang distances himself from real life. “I love playing the plane-shooting game on WeChat, but have no interest in playing chess with my classmates,” said Wang.
Deng Yunyun, 14, said that social media has influenced their normal life. Last month, his school held a basketball match, and a student hurt his leg instead of giving him some help, students were busy updating their blogs about the accident. “I think they need to balance (平衡) their real and online lives, and what worries parents and teachers a lot is safety,” said Deng.
“Many students are happy to tell their interests and personal information to their social media ‘friends’. And this could bring them danger,” said Miss Wang, a teacher from Shenzhen. “For example, WeChat’s shake-shake function allows users to connect to other users nearby.” Also the police warn about the risks of making friends in this way.
When enjoying so much fun on social media, we still need to keep safety in our mind.

D.Because there were few students there at that moment.
44.The underlined word “this” refers to “_______”.
A.WeChat’s shake-shake function

(2022春·福建厦门·八年级厦门五缘实验学校校考期中)A holiday on a mountain bike can be really exciting. As you ride along, problems are forgotten, and you can get healthy at the same time! It’s a great way to see the country and you can stop whenever to walk along the way. You’d be surprised how far you can travel in two weeks. When you go by bike you can take routes (线路) a car couldn’t, so you’ll find that your journey goes up and down hills, through forests and across valleys…much more interesting than a motorway! Like most sports, mountain biking isn’t dangerous but you should have the right equipment (装备). It’s important to wear a helmet and suitable clothing, and to choose a route that’s up to your health conditions. It’s also quite cheap, because once you’ve bought the bike (you can find good bargains in second-hand markets and on the Internet), very little extra money is needed, except for regular maintenance of the bike. Anyway, it’s always worth it!
Some technical (技术的) knowledge is useful, however, if you are thinking of doing a long journey. You should be prepared to make minor repairs. For example, you might have to change a tyre, or repair the brakes and there will be other small problems during a trip. Most of this knowledge can be found in a good bike repair book. Of course, if you don’t have these skills, it doesn’t mean you can’t go on any long trips. Perhaps you could go with someone who is good at mending things!
One other important piece of equipment is a First Aid kit. It’s more possible for you to get small cuts and bruises than major injuries, but even the best bike-riders fall off sometimes. It’s all part of the experience!
46.When you go on holiday by bike, _________.
A.you go faster than you might expect B.you take the same routes as a car
C.you don’t need anything but a car D.you never go through forests

B.you can go with someone who has the right skills

50.To go mountain biking you should _________.
A.be ready to get many major injuries B.be friendly and helpful

(2022春·福建莆田·八年级福建省莆田市中山中学校联考期中)Cycling, which means riding a bike, is popular among children across the UK. They have saved parents more than £368,000 in gas (汽油) costs in the last three weeks, by cycling a million miles to school.
The journeys were made as part of Sustrans’ Big Pedal—the UK’s biggest school cycling game, started by the world’s top cyclist, Mark. More than 1.000 schools around the country took part in it.
With gas prices rising, families across the country are looking for ways to cut down on gas costs. The Big Pedal shows just how easy it is to leave the car at home and use two wheels for short trips like the school run.
More than a quarter of a million children have shown how choosing two wheels instead of four can help families save money. If children keep cycling to school all the year round, families in the UK can save themselves nearly £3 million in gas costs.
According to Matt, a famous director (导演), cycling not only helps families save on gas costs, but also improves a child’s performance at school.
In fact, cycling is good for kids. “By regularly (定期地) cycling to school, we become fitter, smarter and better leaners.” a student called Tommy said confidently.
“It’s great to see more people cycling, and I always smile when I see a family or a child on a bike. So many kids want to cycle, so we should make it easy for them to get around by bike and keep healthy.” Mark said.
In order to encourage more schools to take part in the cycling competition, Joseph from Sustrans.org.uk said that prizes (奖励) would be given. Schools can choose any six weeks in the year to take part in the competition (or longer if they wish).

This morning, I had an experience with a “rule breaker” during an English exam. I felt somebody was watching me a little too closely. I turned my head quickly and saw James who sat right behind me. My eyes caught his and he said in a low voice, “I hope you studied for this test!” I gave him a smile, not sure whether he was joking or not, and returned to my test. This time I leaned (倾身) a little more closely toward my paper. “I can’t see!” James said.
“What am I going to do?” I thought to myself. Cheating went against my beliefs. I curled (蜷曲) my arm around my answers.
“He’s your friend, and what are friends for?”
“You know it’s wrong.”
I tapped (轻敲,轻拍) the top of my desk, hoping for an easy way out of this matter. No easy answer came. I just knew I had to do what I felt was right, even if it made James mad. So I guarded (守卫) my paper so that he couldn’t see my answers.
When the exam ended, I stood there for a moment, searching for the right words to say to James. “Sorry, James, but you know me well enough to understand how I feel about cheating,” I said slowly and softly. “But maybe I could help you study before the next test.” “OK, Brian,” he smiled. “It might not be easy but I’ll give it a try.”
I felt happy that my friendship with James hadn’t been destroyed (破坏). Mrs. Archer would be proud.

In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow made some experiments(实验). She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory.
In the first experiment, they asked two groups of people to put 40 unimportant facts into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would store the information. The second group understood that the computer would not store it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In the second experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in an exact computer folder(文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. However, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(交互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize a lot of information so that they are able to get it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less clever but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

(2022春·福建厦门·八年级厦门市松柏中学校考期中)Arts venues, such as theaters, cinemas and opera houses, lost a lot of money during the pandemic (全国或全球性流行病) when they closed. The public missed out, too, because people couldn’t go to shows. Going to a show, especially around Christmas, is a treat. The excitement starts as the lights dim and the heavy curtain (幕布) rises. However, tickets can be very expensive: for example, it can cost more than ₤100 for a ticket to see Harry Poter and the Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre in London. Even when shows are not as costly, many people cannot afford the ticket prices, so they miss out. Some places are trying to make sure that nobody is left out because of cost by asking audiences to pay what they can afford. What do you think? Should all shows be “pay what you can”?
Agree
Disagree
1. Arts and culture should be available to all, no matter your income or background. Pay what you can opens the arts to everyone.
2. Many arts venues are charities and also get public money, so they should give back to the audiences.
3. Being open and inclusive (包容的) may well lead people to give more money to the venues, so that more people can go to its shows.
1. The price of the ticket reflects the quality of the art. “Pay what you can” would mean “pay nothing”, it makes the work seem less valuable.
2. Research found that it’s not the price of a ticket that puts people off going to see a show but the thought that the show won’t be any good.
3. It is expensive to put on a good show and those who enjoy the show should share in that cost and support the performers.
