I was in line waiting to pay. In line there were two people before me. A little boy was buying some rather strange clothes. He chatted with anyone who was interested in the clothes and soon we learnt that he was going to a kindergarten party. He had done a great job of putting together interesting costumes.
I noticed that the little boy was paying mostly with change (零钱). It seemed that he had robbed his pig bank to do this shopping. However, the cashier told him he was short after counting all the money. The boy thought for a moment and said, “please keep the shirt and I will come back with more money.”
It was clear that he had already used all money he had and he was $8.00 short. The lady in, front of me said, “Well, I could pay half of that.” I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We dug into our handbags. However, both of us only had ten-dollar bills and we needed the cashier to get the change for us. Other shoppers began digging into their pockets to find some change. It was amazing and touching as all these strangers seemed to react (反应) with the same mind. All wanted to be of help. Within minutes the cashier said, “I have too much money.” “The cashier didn’t need our ten-dollar bills. Then the lady in front of me, who had been the first to offer help, said, “Wait! I didn’t even get a chance to give anything!”
I smiled at her and said, “You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this.” The little boy smiled and thanked us. We wished him the best and he left. I was left with a good feeling. I had seen the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, “It sure feels good to give, doesn’t it?” I smiled back and said, “Yes!”

The fire at Notre Dame Cathedral (巴黎圣母院) on Apr. 15th 2019 in Paris has raised questions about the condition of thousands of other historic buildings across Europe. It also raises questions about whether European governments are doing enough to keep up and care for such buildings.
Some people say the fire last month was a wake-up call, not just Europe, but the whole world. Large fires have long robbed humanity of knowledge, art and treasures. One example is the fire at the famous library of Alexandria in northern Egypt about 1700 years ago.
In 2015, the German engineering company Siemens found that Scotland had about 10 serious fires a year, while England lost at least twelve listed buildings a year. In Germany, 70 historic buildings have been destroyed since 2000.
And all too often, fires happen while old buildings are being repaired. Experts say that what is needed continuous attention and maintenance. These steps, if taken, could help avoid the need for major repairing work.
But regular attention and maintenance costs money.
Part of the problem comes from the shortage of money provided by governments after the 2008 financial crisis (金融危机). As a result, governments are increasingly looking for rich companies to keep up these historic buildings.
“We do need more money, but this is a shared duty for governments, businesses and citizens across Europe,” said an officer from the European Union.
Some say world-famous monuments like Notre Dame are the driving force behind tourism and should get more respect. People have noticed the importance of such respect.
“Historic buildings are a gold mine (矿). You cannot explore it and then just leave the mine and go to another one. It is something you really have to value,” the officer said.
33.After the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral, more attention is paid to ________.
    A.European governments B.famous libraries
    C.engineering companies D.the old buildings
34.According to the passage, one of the biggest enemies of cultural treasures is ________.
    A.robbers B.fires C.money D.tourists
35.“These steps” in Paragraph 4 refer to ________.
A.attention and maintenance B.careful repairing work
C.enough respect from people D.serious financial crisis
36.The purpose of writing this article is to ask everyone to ________.
A.value historic buildings B.donate plenty of money
C.pay attention to big fires D.avoid exploring mines
    D
Many of you have probably had this experience: You get on a train and are ready to take a nap or read a book, only to find that the passenger in front of you is watching a TV show on his tablet without headphones. The child next to you won’t stop crying. And the old lady behind you talks on her phone during the whole trip.
Wish the train could be less noisy? There might be a solution for you. The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, one of China’s busiest high-speed rail lines, will have “quiet” carriages (车厢) starting from Dec 23, 2020.
In quiet carriages, onboard videos will be muted (静音) and announcements will be made at a lower volume. Doors at the ends of the carriage will be kept closed to reduce noise from other carriages. Train attendants will be responsible for making sure that passengers remain quiet and follow the rules.
Passengers who are willing to obey the rules can choose the quiet carriages when booking their tickets, according to China’s national railway operator.
Some people have pointed out that this kind of quiet environment should be offered in all carriages. They say that having quiet carriages might give people the impression that they don’t need to be quiet in non-quiet carriages.
While some internet users are in favor of the new service, it has also sparked discussion about just how quiet travelers should be in quiet carriages. Many people have raised questions such as “What if I snore (打呼噜)?” and “Can we talk to our travel companions if we need to?”
37.Paragraph 1 is written to show that ________.
A.many people watch TV shows on trains B.people do all kinds of things on trains

    38.How will quiet carriages work?
A.Train attendants won’t make any announcements.
B.No one will make sure passengers follow the rules.
C.Passengers won’t be allowed to watch videos.
D.The doors of these carriages will stay closed.
39.What does the phrase “in favor of” in the last paragraph mean?
A.in need of B.in support of C.in search D.in place of
40.What do we know from the last paragraph?
